Love the tequila old fashioned. I make a margarita old fashioned by making a lime, orange, salt, and grapefruit simple syrup and building off of that. Typically with a Blanco tequila and Ango..... Mouthwatering ;)
I'm apparently in charge of cocktails for my girlfriend's Christmas party so now I have an excuse to watch every HtD video again. It's for study, right?
@medusa little Plus you don't need billions of different ingredients. And with cocktails for a party you can usually fit them quite well to the clientele and theme. Girlfriends Christmas Party sounds like sweet/juicy drinks and maybe a christmassy drink.
If you're putting an Old Fashioned on your menu, I'll suggest a Kraken (or other high quality spiced rum) Old Fashioned. The spices pair great with the bitters and give a christmasy feel, at least for me, because of the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg.
No brandy old fashion? *Gasps in Wisconsinite* Speaking of Wisconsin, if you find yourself in Door County Wisconsin, stop by Nelsen's Hall on Washington Island. Nelsen's Hall is the number one purveyor of Angustora Bitters because there is a tradition of selling shots of bitters. You can join the bitters club by visiting then and taking a shot of bitters. I did it a few years ago and the shot was pretty damn good. Nelsen's Hall is Wisconsin's longest running bar due to the fact they sold shots of bitters during prohibition for medicinal purposes.
@@bryansnow3690 Washington Island is other worldly. It's like going back in time. Nelsen's Hall is one of many places that feel that way. There's also a burger stand called The Albatross on Washington Island that's supposed to be great, but I haven't been... yet.
The Monarch Public House has it beat by a few years as the oldest/longest-running bar in Wisconsin, but they both seem like cool places to go. A Wisco Old-Fashioned is a thing of beauty.
I was introduced to old fashioneds in a Wisconsin supper club and the brandy variety will always be my favorite. They muddle granulated sugar with Angostura bitters and orange before adding the spirit and ice and I love the way the sugar doesn't completely dissolve, so you get the tiny crunch of sugar at the end. That, and brandy is one of the few distilled spirits I like.
I love learning new Old Fashioned recipes! I know we're just past pumpkin season, but a Brandy, Pumpkin and Angostura Old Fashioned is surprisingly addictive!
This was great! The old fashioned is my all time favorite cocktail method. There’s a gin made down here in the Austin area that’s aged in whiskey barrels. It is a really fascinating, complex liquor. I had trouble figuring out what to do with it, but I recently found it works GREAT as a bourbon replacement in cocktails. Gave it a shot with the old fashioned. WOW. highly recommend.
@@absidyabsidy2727 yes! The particular gin I’m speaking of here is Antique Barrel aged Gin from Waterloo distillery in Dripping Springs, TX. They also have a classic gin that is very good, as well.
I just started to make Old Fashioned my go to drink since I can easily make it at home. I make mine as simple as possible, bitters with a sugar cube, a dash of OJ, bourbon or rye depending, and I top it off with some seltzer water. Many thanks for cluing me in on this wonderful idea to celebrate this wonderful beverage.
No Greg here's to you. I just want to say how much I appreciate having so much of a library to watch like I have you as like a podcast like your play on my TV while I you'll go about my day is lovely thank you
I can’t get over how much I enjoy this channel, specifically spending my birthday morning, watching your videos as a treat to myself! Might make one of these for later tonight 🤙🏼
My husband likes to order an old fashioned made with Jameson's Irish whiskey. Once in a while a bartender will argue with him about it. Your rum old fashioned reminds me of my favorite exotic drink, the Brazilian caipirinha. Rum agricole is very similar to cachaça, and the lime and syrup is like the lime and sugar in a caipirinha. So I'd drink one of your rum old fashioneds.
I do a similar tequila based old fashioned. I use Ancho Reyes Liquor mezcal, reposado tequila, old fashioned bitters, chocolate bitters, and agave nectar for sweetness. It comes out quite smokey and the chocolate compliments it so well to add almost a bbq smoke flavour to the cocktail.
Your channel introduced me to Glenn Crytzer and an uncontrollable urges to drink before I go to work. Luckily, I don’t work until four and own a bar and grill. Keep up the good work. I love the style, photography, and music of your channel!
I can tell Greg doesn't need an Angostura partnership to recommend them. The number of drinks I've seen him make with those... congrats! Also love me some old fashioneds so definitely dig this episode!
I’m a little late for Old Fashioned Week, but our menu has three Old Fashioned Variants! My fave is called the ‘New School’ Muddle lemon and cherry with Angostura Citrus Bitters and Sugar, 2 oz Bourbon, and then a Luxardo Cherry Liqueur and Angostura Aromatic Bitters float
Originally the Skyrim skooma was smoked rather than drunk, but I'm in favor of this suggestion. Although I'm not a fan of tomatoes, they are a nightshade. Perhaps an earthly skooma beverage needs to start with a foundation of Cachaça (moon sugar) and tomato juice (nightshade)? Would absinthe work with that?
@@peshgirl That's brilliant. Obviously, that's for Greg to decide if he ever decides to go there, but for me it's a perfect idea. I wonder if it should be added as actual smoke, or whether it should include some mescal or islay whisky to bring smoke in to it. I like the way you think, Stephanie!
@@ChristopherOdegard Upon further reflection, oranges are a consumable food in Oblivion. It was wonderful. I'll be trying more of your stuff in the future. And now I want to take a bartending class for fun.
Hi from Trinidad! Great video - on your Rum OF, we can tend to go pretty traditional with the ingredients, especially since we have wonderful King Oranges that pair so well with the Angostura Orange Bitters (I use 3 splashes of Bitter and 1-2 splashes of orange bitters). I would try the Angostura 1787 because of the Gros Michel afternotes, or a sweeter rum like El Dorado 15 yo from Guyana or the Angostura Single Barrel if you want to stay Trini! Keep 'em coming. Cheers.
1/2 oz simple 1/2 oz St Germain 2oz Bufflo Trace 2-3 dashes Angostura Stir and express an orange peel And there you have it, an elderflower old fashioned.
My two variations are: Old Irish and Old Mexican. Old Irish: just use Irish whiskey, the rest of the recipe is regular. Old Mexican: Bar spoon of lime juice, drop of agave syrup, small pinch of fine salt, dash of orange bitters, Tequila (I keep my tequila in the freezer so that ice isn’t needed).
Just happened to buy a bottle of Angostura orange bitters along with a tiny absinthe bottle today, I already have an aromatic bitters in my bar cabinet. It really improves almost any drink. I sometimes even add it to non-alcoholic drinks as well just to add some bite.
I've been a bit hesitant to buy the orange bitters, because I often think that a lot of things with orange in it like orange chocolate; the orange becomes too dominant, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's a nice balanced fresh orange aroma and it's not so intense that it's hard to control. (Btw I'm not payed to say this, I'm just a happy customer)
Okay no one else is saying it so I’m going to, THIS GUY KNOWS HIS WATCHES! I notice all his watches and don’t see the one in this video often! Love the timepieces man!
I made the run ole fashioned and it was freakin great. The only thing I would change would be making it in a mixing glass then pouring over the rock in the glass. I made everything in the glass and near the end I was getting a lot of little lime pieces that I didn’t really love. I’ve found that this might be my new fav drink though!! Thanks, Greg!!
When I was taught Old Fashioneds, my teacher did the bitters and bourbon and garnishes and everything, but she used five ice cubes, one at a time, and fully dissolving the first four before adding the next, by stirring the drink. It took a good five minutes, but it tasted incredible, thanks to all the aeration. I've never actually seen it served like that anywhere since.
I'm supposing those must be those small ice-machine cubes. That be well less than 1 Gregg-sized cube. That'd work well with cube or granulated sugar. It'd not be too cold all at once, and all the stirring would also disolve the sugar well. Getting a good melt is important to drink balance (including aeration). I do ice, 1/2 cube and 1/2 coarse crushed, so it's just about covered by the ingredients. Then shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is frozen and about all I hear left is the remnants of the cubes rattling. When this is done with egg white for a sour things turn out wonderfully.
I've been doing a version of your rum old fashioned with Ron Zacapa 23 for a couple years and a homemade orange bitters for a couple years now and its hard to beat some good rum with lime! Love the video!
I made a variation once that was pretty tasty: 2-4 dashes orange bitters into a chilled rocks glass 1 Ice cube Twist of orange peel 2 oz Scotch (I used Monkey Shoulder since that's what I had at the time, but smokier scotch tastes better) Top off with apple juice I call it the Sippy Cup.
Going to need a gif of that ice cube spinning in that empty glass. Beautiful shot. (Also going to need that slow and comfortable screw against a wall, Greg.)
