“I believe this is your floor.” The way Christopher Reeve said it, had so much charm and charisma.
chris reeve will always be my superman
Lies again? El Tornado
Yep,He was my Favourite Superman x
Forever and ever
Definitely
Here here
Love how he took the time to comfort Lois after such a terrifying moment, even though he knows there's a bomb and he gotta be quick
1:18-1:28, 1:36-1:43 however, Superman accidentally released general Zod and his 2 elite soldiers from the phantom zone.
YES
1:09 - Superman pushing the lift away is an awesome shot. Reeve gets it perfect.
Ikr it looks amazing
Yeah.. the.. i cant turn.. im a shopping trolley LOL
1:39 .. the blue is significant.. very
As is the fact they come out in 3 different directions..
As is the fact there is THREE
That scene was the bomb.
LMAO!
I see what you did there...
1:27-1:37 including the escape from the Phantom zone.
I love it when she says a bomb, they've got a bomb up there, they've got a bomb. I know, I know. Dom ta dom, dom ta dom dum ta dum.
The special effects on this movie are just amazing, considering it was produced in 1979 and 1980. I don't know how they did a lot of them without computers.
They had computers back then, but they didn't have CGI in the same way we have today.
@@jeffo9396 Computers in 1979 weren't much use as far as movie effects were concerned.
@@ajs41 But they were used in scenes like the electronic analysis of the Death Star plans in Star Wars in 1977.
@@jedijones And the opening credits of Superman. Basically, they were never used for anything "real" until The Last Starfighter.
Yeah, can’t believe movies like this one, Alien and Star Wars used mostly miniatures and optical tricks
The flying shot at 0:20 towards the tower is magnificent work.
My thoughts exactly.
Certainly is, amazing to think the shot was a complete miniature, work of the amazing late Derek Meddings.
@@APRICEPRODUCTION great flying
Just incredible. Is the shot at 0:53 also a miniature, or an actor suspended from the elevator? Hard to tell. Great work.
Muito bom . Excelente efeito .
Superman flying away with the elevator as Lois looks on in absolute worship of him....perfect.
Director: "Just pretend you're floating in space."
Actors: "What does that look like?"
Director: "No idea, just look confused."
Well it would be confusing the vacuum of space should have killed them
The John Williams music so perfect I love it.
It's John Williams score but Ken Thorne composing it.
@@bryansteele832 1:21 that’s right.
The reason why the older effects don't matter is because of the way Chris Reeve 'flew'. The way he moves his body on those two tiny wires is insane. Such patience, grace and strength. The release of the elevator at 1.10 is awesome.
Explain yourself further, please, because I don't understand your post as written....
He did hanggliding as a hobby prior to being cast, so he brought a lot of those movement to Superman's flying scenes.
@Kal_290 - you're precisely right. Since I was a young boy in the 70s, I've been mesmerized by the aerial ballet Christopher Reeve displayed as Superman. He's so smooth, elegant and refined in his movements yet totally masculine. No other Superman has captured that special quality.
@@simonwebster368 totally agree. The way he gracefully lands in every shot is mesmerizing. I love it.
Oh is that why? That's cool that he did hang gliding. I heard from other actors doing wire work that it's strenuous.
I love it when Lois remembers there's a bomb in the lift and reacts and points like a child but, like a loving parent, Superman reassures her and gently but firmly moves her back for safety.
He knows there's a hydrogen bomb about to go off but still takes the time to make jokes and stop for a hug! LOL
Superman is also super aware of how much time he has until the bomb explodes. Although it would have been funny if it exploded right as they hugged.
@@jeffo9396 I guess he would then have to reverse time again, and bring Miss Lane back to life!
He probably also knows Lois is right underneath it. Supey still needs his cuteness fix from Miss Lane.
@@SuperTed19021 lolol.
Because he’s the best
Christopher Reeve was the Best Superman. It's so sad what happened to him. I love the chemistry between CR and Margot Kidder, they were a great match. I love Margot, so gorgeous. Superman 1 and 2 are two of the best movies made and great special effects and just a good entertainment without all the crap in today's films. I believe a Man can fly.
No matter how many times I watch Christopher Reeve with that big "S" on his chest, I feel EXACTLY the same way I did when I was a kid. NOBODY will ever compare.
This is my favourite scene in the whole Superman II movie. That lift with the hydrogen bomb turns out to be the fate in this story.... how Superman's act of releasing it in dark space eventually and unintentionally results in the release of the supervillains who are frozen in that prism. Magnificent shot, editing and storytelling.
I believe this is your floor.
I remember when they used that line in the Animated Series (STAS).
Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Trying to Win A Pulitzer Prize, for an Interview with Superman!
0:43 I love the way the music kicks in
Metropolis to Paris: A few minutes.
Paris to further out than the moon: 20 seconds.
(Not to mention circling Earth several times per second when turning back time in the first movie.)
That's an easy answer. The speed would effect everybody around him, it could hurt people, so he goes slower. He can any speed in space because no one's out there. The reason why the Flash doesn't hurt anybody when he runs full speed, is because he taps into the speed force.
Only in "Movie Time" and not "Real Time".
Christopher Reeve. The only true Superman.
I was born in 2007 but I managed to get my hands on this movie as a little kid and it’s so nostalgic
Man, those special effects are much more impressive than what they have nowadays. That's because they didn't have our modern tech.
It looks amazing.
Not having the modern tech forced them to be more creative to make these amazing special fx.
That hydrogen bomb was so powerful that it even sent "Superman" hurling through space when it exploded .
1:25 that’s right. 1:31-1:44 until the phantom zone is broken.
WHEN THEIR IN THAT GLASS THING IT LOOKS LIKE QUEENS GREATEST HITS ALBUM COVER
1:43-1:45 that’s because the sonic boom 💥 destroyed the phantom zone, before zod, non, and Ursa takes over Earth.
Christopher Reeves was so darn fine!!! A real Superman in life until death!❤
The effects here are better than Supergirl effects
They really are
The ground-level flight scenes are slightly better in Supergirl though.
What do you mean supergirl? The current tv series?
@@gayavincent6254 No the 1984 movie.
@@LandersWorkshop ah! oh! Ok!!!
0:34 despite Superman being portrayed as a saviour to humanity, she still had the innate nature to thank God!
Naturally Zod and his pals just happened to be floating by at that precise moment 🙄🤣
That's the part that got me.
@@09rja1:44 me too.
1:43-1:54, 2:03-2:08 exactly
Multi-dimensional physics? Perhaps Zod and company are occupying every point of our universe within the confines of the Phantom Zone. (Like Star Trek's Warp 10) I don't think it's meant to be a coincidence that they just happen to be floating by right at that moment.
I know so many people like the Donner cut, but I saw this in the movies as a kid, have the trading cards, and grew up with this version. I don't want it changed
They have both the Lester and Donner Versions on DVD.
I didn’t like the Donner cut
0:20 Great miniature of Supes flying. That shot was amazing when the film was first released and still looks great,
At 0:47...it kind of sounds like Indiana Jones.
0:17 Turn back time cue start, Donna!
0:33 the legendary smile of a true hero.
Reeves was a great actor, a theater actor.
Excellent in somewhere in time
When you grow up and realize how far away the moon is from the earth….man he had to be flying fast!
1:38 the effect very cartoonly, but the explosion of the phantom zone looks great.
I love it
1:10 love that shot
me too, it s so real
@@edsonbenevides1765 yeah there's another shot in Superman 3 where he becomes good again and flies to the oil spill and the way it's shot is just gorgeous
Me too.
Christopher Reeves is my favorite Superman. I like all four movies. My two all time favorites is the first two movies.
I don't care that these visuals are beatable by RUclipsrs nowadays...
These films were my childhood and the visuals are amazing for the early 80's!
Issac Wale It was the 70s not the 80s
@@christiansoldier77 This movie came out in 1980 though.
@@bdjoh011 It was filmed at the same time as the first movie so it was the 70s.
“The Phantom Zone might, just might, be cracked open by a nuclear explosion in space.” There are always nuclear explosions occurring in space. Our Sun (and all other stars for that matter) are little more than ginormous nuclear furnaces. The Phantom Zone should have been cracked open years ago. And Joe-E, based on this scene, was not the smartest guy on the planet Krypton. Why would he configure the Phantom Zone’s exit portal to be within a few hundred thousand miles of the planet that was supposed to be the sanctuary place for his son?
Here's something interesting... it took Superman 21 seconds (from 0:48 to 1:09) from Paris to fly past the Moon (with a distance of around 239,000 miles or 384,551 kilometers), which means the Man of Steel is averaging 11,381 miles (18,312 km) per second during that flight!
6% c. No big deal.
Did you notice that while in the atmosphere he is flying slower but as soon as he reaches space he accelerates rapidly? Pretty cool if they meant it that way.
But it took him 10 mins to fly to Paris from metropolis. Lol! Jk
speed of light is 200,000 km/s Superman was doing 18K per sec that works out to be close to 9% the speed of light
Let's say it took 10 seconds for Supes to fly from Paris to past the moon. If the Moon is 238,900 miles away, Superman is flying at nearly Mach 31.
Just for reference, the NASA/USAF X-15 is the fastest fighter jet ever produced. It reached record top speed of Mach 6.72 or 4,520 mph.
1:43 now, general zod and his Allie’s are free from the phantom zone of the explosion.
Superman was flying at light speed in the first. Light travels at equivalent of 7 times around the earth per second.
I saw the suit that Christopher Reeve wore in the films when I was at a Ripley’s museum in LA.
This film was way ahead of its time with the visual effects. I know we all think of Star Wars when it comes to effects being ahead of their time but this film was awesome. One of the best.
Chris is Superman and will always be the man of steel.
Fun Fact: Superman comes to Earth and made everybody believe he was a fictional character whose alter ego was Clark Kent while in fact he lived his civil life disguised as the actor known as Chistopher Reeve.
That’s totally incorrect.
Superman Christopher Reeve Forever
I Will Always Love You, Little Lady Margot Kidder as Lois Lane!
0:34 me too.
Technically, that elevator should have exploded as it was going through Earth's atmpsphere. But then again, this is a movie where aliens fight in a fictional city.
Yeh but this time in New York
I liked Mad Magazines version, where Superman lifts the whole Eiffel Tower & flies it into space. & Lois is yelling just the Elevator! lol.
Welcome to DC Land, but this time in *real life* instead of a comic.
Going on YOUR "logic" about the elevator, then ANYTHING that is shot into space, via Earth's atmosphere, should "explode".
I would also like to question how Zod and the others absorbed so much yellow sun radiation that they are able to survive out in space
What a clip, what a clip... is it better music, effects, atmosphere? All perfect
OMG thankyou so much for posting these clips!!! huge fan!!! best sequel ever!!!
This is the inferior version of Superman 2
@@integrity101 not really I’ve seen both versions of Superman 2 but still prefer this one
@@Technoid10
That is great. Enjoy whatever you enjoy. In my opinion the theatrical version is much worse. So many useless shots. So many eye rolls. So many stupid jokes. Lester was only brought in to finish the film as cheap as possible and it shows.
Its still a classic but nowadays id give it a 7 out of 10.
@@integrity101 your not wrong and I def see where your coming from. I agree there were unnecessary shots added and do prefer donners take in some areas most notably Jor-el and how Much better it ties into the first film. But on the flip side I think some of those shots were better acted like the scene where he reveals his powers to Lois, when he does give up his powers and I do like the ending where Lois and Clark discuss about her knowing his identity and how much it pains her and him flying with the flag at the end. And when Superman does loses his powers I like how Lester had that fade shot of Clark walking out and Superman being a shadow in the chamber. So yeah there are few moments from both cuts that really stand out and some that don’t like what you mentioned and those annoying powers they gave him! and it’s fine if u do prefer donners cut over lesters. By no means is it a the perfect cut or is donners. I wish that WB would make a final cut using both donners and lesters cuts to make one that uses the best of both

I actually just did that for myself. Have you seen any fan edits?
The Full Scene, has Lois trying to remember how to spell Pulitzer Prize, for Her Interview with Superman

That’s it? The Phantom Zone destroyed by a puny bomb let alone Kryptons supernova?

@@Joshin_Jinn1:42-1:44 definitely not good.
Superman saves Lois Lane so much I am convinced this is some kind of roleplay between them
The special effects back then compared to what we have now, probably looks like how we thought of the ones from the first Superman TV shows with George Reeves. But some of it actually isn’t too bad. His acting, however, holds up. He was so handsome.
In space, there’s no sound even if a atomic bomb went off lol
Gee Whiz, WHY don't you tell that to STAR WARS?
It's called a MOVIE and not a DOCUMENTARY!
There's a guy flying around in blue pajamas and throwing elevators into space, and that's the part that bothers you?
Nearly ever movie depicts sound in space.
@@PHANTOMZ0NE pajamas lmao
Another funny moment the lift looks like it plummeting toward the 2nd level of the tower but when superman arrives it seems to have only started down lol
Unfortunately this scene isn't on the director's cut it only shows Superman sending a guided missel into orbit with the blast releasing the krypton villians.
The missile was the one Superman kept from destroying Miss Tessmacher's home.
I was bummed Donner didn't decide to keep this bit even though it was Lester's creation. It would've made a helluva first intro scene. All they would have to do is edit out the villains' freedom (since it already happened with the missile) and just transition to say...the famous Concode scene or LEx's prison scene. XD
@@lordzavulon666But that was how Superman II was supposed to open. I think had the Salkind’s not screwed Donner over, Superman II would have been a much better movie. But hey, that’s just me.
I like this scene better
Oh no, Zod, Ursa, and Non are free!
RIP Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve
Kelly Weingart Once again, Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve will always be the best Lois Lane and Superman ever.
@Kagereneko Hold on tight, folks. Superman will also make the ride unwittingly extra bumpy by giving up his powers. Surely, how on earth can he get them back as well? Stay tuned.
1:37-1:42 😕 1:54-2:03 now, they want to rule earth in order to make the new krypton.
One thing that's always bothered me.
When Superman stops the elevator and the Lois steps off of the bottom of the elevator, she hits a solid floor, instead of falling all the way down the *shaft*, of which the elevator is a part of.
She steps on the part that does have a floor on it
And the Eiffel Tower lost it’s elevator, but that’s not the only thing that might’ve had you conserned.
For the record, I just wanna say carrying a bomb is a lot easier than carrying an entire elevator.
He can literally destroy planets so that doesn't really makes a difference
He also didn't need to take it past the moon and yet he did
Starts at 0:59 - Superman takes the elevator with the hydrogen bomb on it away from the Earth (Past the moon as well). He let's go, letting the elevator go off into space and then.............. BOOM!!!! Best classic moment.
Looking again the sunlight on the lift wrong direction as sun behind earth as he shoves it out
So cool the transition from Paris to deep space and the unforeseen consequences of an explosion there.
1:37-1:43 until the phantom zone got destroyed.
1:05 Superman made a huge mistake, thrusting the elevator with the hydrogen bomb in the wrong direction. Superman has X ray vision and super vision, surely he would have seen the Phantom Zone containing the 3 criminals from Krypton coming from that direction. Had Superman thrust the elevator/bomb towards the Sun, the shockwaves from that distance wouldn't have shattered the Phantom Zone, and the Phantom Zone would have simply drifted right by and harmlessly through the Solar System and back out into interstellar space.
If superman hadn't wasted valuable time showing off in front of Lois maybe he could've avoided the following disaster of releasing the prisoners plus the death-toll as a consequence that he completely caused
He didn’t know. He’s godlike and not human, but at the end, he’s only mortal.
Both Brandon Routh and Christopher reeve has an elevator scene, I also want one for Tyler Hoechlin.
I bet they were so glad to escape Non's gas in the phantom zone.
1:30-1:43 😆
julio de 1981, debi rogar a mi papá para entrar con él al cine Velarde en la ciudad de Valparaiso, era la funcion de la tarde ya, estaba medio oscuro, era invierno..mi viejo accedió y pude verla como corresoponde. Bello recuerdo.
The Look on Margot Kidders Face, as Superman Saves The Eiffel Tower and The Planet, While Releasing The Evil Kryptonians is Priceless
1:29-1:36 exactly.
I think he had a little too much of a struggle to stopping that elevator when in the first movie he lifted a tectonic plate. Still great one liner.
Reeve has to carry so much by himself it just builds up:
1st movie:tectonic plates
2nd movie: a lift
4th movie: the 4th movie

Looks like Superman flew into Warp speed. That'll make any Star Trek fan a Superfan of Superman proud.
Probably had a big bush in the 70's , oh wait, was Chris attending Harrison Smit Elementary at the time too? Funny, I don't remember him ever being there. He must have been a Great actor at 6 years old. I remember that Fame series being on TV at the time. I remember because they had all of us doing Gymnastics there in the cafeteria. They had us roll on mats while taking pictures. We had a blast that day. Capri suns in sack lunches bring back memories
Shockwave shouldn't have bothered Superman.
I love how superman unwittingly set them free
1:28-1:37, 1:43-1:58 me too. except, he accidentally free them.
Kal El of Krypton is to be held blameless because number 1,he had no knowledge of the whereabouts of the phantom zone, and 2,he had no knowledge of it not being proof or resistant to nuclear radiation.
Out of all the versions of me, reeves got it right
While the Donner Cut of SUPERMAN II made some worthy modifications, THIS was the opening sequence the movie needed; it's explosively big and entertaining, alive with tension and drama, while the later version seems small and underwhelming.
Well yes, but I like the idea that Superman undoing time to save Lois having the consequences of him accidentally setting free Zod.

Is it just me or does that elevator seem to fall forever and never getting close to the bottom?
Superman with all that time could have taken his sweet time getting there and still made it with time to spare.
The speed in which he gets from the earth to the moon is impressive.
Yet he’s not that fast in other scenes.

My childhood movie
Superman 2: The Richard Donner cut is also worth checking out since it includes Marlon Brando's scenes. Superman 2 is the best Superman movie ever made. I noticed the sarcastic response below me. It's interesting when people miss the point of my original comment and assume that I wasn't speaking about Superman 2 from my own point of view.
@Laid Back Happy to be of assistance. Thanks for not being sarcastic. ;)
@Adam Driver When it comes to special effects, I'll admit that I do have a fondness for the old school technique of practical effects. I'll admit that the sarcastic comment that I received from the other guy is kind of ironic since my comment was written from my own point of view and I was just expressing my own opinion on Superman 2. I have both the theatrical and Richard Donner cut version of Superman 2 on DVD. I grew up watching a lot of classic movies from the 1980's so I can also appreciate films with a proper story and character development. A proper story and character development is why The Blob, The Fly, and The Thing remakes from the 1980's were so entertaining.
@Adam Driver You mentioned Christopher Lloyd. He's one of the all time greats when it comes to his acting skills. The 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's wouldn't have felt the same without his eccentric movie characters. The final fly transformation scene and that scene where the Stathis Borans character ends up getting his hand and foot dissolved by the fly's digestive enzymes is what stands out to me in that 1986 remake.
@Adam Driver I remember that character. He played Switchblade Sam and brought a lot of comedy and personality to that role. My comment about old school movies also applies to older video games. Some people focus way too much time on a game's graphics and forget that a video game is more enjoyable if it has the proper replay value and enjoyment factor. You can make a game with great graphics but if it is boring and you don't care about the story or the characters then it defeats the purpose of purchasing said game in the first place. I grew up watching his roles in Dennis the Menace, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and the Back to the Future trilogy. All of those movies have aged quite well.
donner cut is better
I remember this, it was one of my best saves
0:55 me too. 1:28-1:42 except, the phantom zone was released from the 💥.
It fascinates me the amount of strength it would take to take off with an elevator vertically like that And go straight out the top

1:37-1:44 because, the sonic boom 💥 pushes him away.
Carrying the bomb all the way past the MOON??
Better to be safe than sorry I guess?
0:53 the stuntman's elbows were slightly bent. If you were pushing, wouldn't they be straight?
Not necessarily you bend your elbows when your lifting something such as a weighted bar
Actually that's not a stuntman, but in fact a miniature model Superman, in a large scale model build of the Eiffel Tower.
this made me realize just how much junk we throw out into space.....just imagine if we didn't have it......."superman there's a bomb, a...welp goodbye"
0:47 Indians Jones theme.
"I believe this is your floor."
I like this better than the Donner cut.
