    Those turned out amazing. Your "paint by numbers" assessment of how Space Marines are usually painted I think can be applied to basically anything GW-related, especially if you only watch their videos and buy their products. We need more videos like this to show that getting a little artsy and learning some basic color theory can really elevate one's hobby. This is a legitimate form of art and GW approaches it more like a scientific formula.

    They look really cool Jay, the base coat really added a lot of interest and saturation that otherwise would have been lacking. I recently found that purple ink works really well for shading nmm bronze, if you glaze yellow ink over it, it starts to look more reddy brown but the slight blue hue creates an extra level of depth that really adds to the effect. Experimental painting is where growth happens :) great job as always guys.

    I read "Retro Marines" and I instantly think of bases with drybrushed sand and trims in Goblin Green 😅. Jay, this is an amazing paintjob and I'd agree that these are your best marines so far - this red/purple blend thing is just next level and the lenses are superb.

    This video makes me so happy.
    My sister (a very talented art school graduate) taught me color theory when I was getting back into miniatures in 2020. Learning to paint well was my competitive escape from the chef world where the stress of that was eating me alive… I found it very relaxing to be practicing these new skills like nmm glazing and osl. They were hard and my good minis turned to sucky minis but then they started to get good again, but I was getting stressed from painting. So I started painting in the same “painterly” style in this video, and started having a blast again.
    the minis are good but not where I always wanted them to be as compared to like the heavy metal guys and golden demon dudes
    Seeing this video makes me happy because now I know that this style can lead to breath taking results if I just keep practicing it! Thank you!

    We do need an updated tactical marine kit to be true scale

  • @erds4113
    @erds4113 2 года назад +3

    0:30 Eehhhhhh, speaking for myself, not really why people are mad. It's not even true realy. Space marines aren't taller now, there's just other space marines that are taller than the existing space marines.
    I myself and I expect other people have reservations about primaris marines cus they're kinda just a soft replacement of what we were invested in. If you don't like space marines and collect something else, chances are your bread and butter units have gotten an upgrade to newer modelling standards lately, or it's written on the wall that they eventually will do.
    Regular actual marines that a lot of older fans are invested in are (or were with the new horus heresy stuff, fingers crossed) basically the only thing that had a red stamp on them basically guaranteeing they'd never get a real update because their new more marketable pseudo-space marine friends are toddling around getting in new fans at the detriment of old ones. The funny part of that is that while regular marines are stuck in stunty limbo, primaris marines are only around the height regular ones should be. So technically the entire range is stuck in slightly-shorter-than-they-should-be purgatory.
    I know some people have coped with it just fine but for me I'd only really be able to stomach getting primaris stuff en-mass if I could sustainably get regular marines in true scale alongside them, hence the spark of hope that is those new Mark 6 marines. I can only hope we'll see those scalings get ported over to mark 7 and 8 bois (also my precious Mark 3's pls). If I can get my favourite old marine squad types and armour varities standing shoulder to shoulder with the new guys rather than stuntedly hovering around the height of new regular human models, I'll be very happy.

    I'll never be sold on primaris marines. They can have good stories, nice looking models, but early lore did a lot of damage and for me they represented a shift in universe dynamic to a less grimdark setting and that just doesn't jive with me. I even have a similar problem with the newer Horus Heresy books.
    The designs of the older stern guard look just fantastic and they were a great choice for this kind of scheme, if ever you get your hands on some tyranic war veterans you have to do something as interesting with them, they're just great older kits

    • @SWTobito0702

      What are your thoughts on Primaris a year later?

    • @kurthasedd7923
      @kurthasedd7923 Год назад

      @@SWTobito0702 I think they've released some very good models, but I put emphasis on SOME. I think the new sternguard vets look very good and are a good kit for the range, same with the terminators if you count those as primaris, but for every 1 adequate - good model or kit it feels like there's 4 or 5 that are just bad and they really saturate the 40k range when it's a game that's got to give love to everyone.
      As for lore, they'll always be lacking. Part of that feels like the transition to a more friendly 40k universe instead of what it was between about the late 90s - early 2010s, the real soul crushing "you're all f*cked" kind of deal. Like the primaris are introduced and they take away what makes chapters cool and unique to replace it with hope. The most readily coming to mind is the Blood Angels who knew they as a blood line were pretty much on their way out, that they were getting more blood thirsty as the generations wore on and that they should go off on a high note. Primaris come along and that problems solved, they have no more black rage or red thirst. The writers realize it's a bad idea and then they back pedal, but still they can just pump out armies of primaris marines in no time.
      Kind of driving away but also leaning into chapters and their identities, they also have well established and unique cultures and heritage that have developed as a result of centuries or millenia. Like how do you reinforce a chapter that practices ritualistic cannibalism? These marines get there and they just accept something that slowly became more and more accepted over centuries? Then there is the universal aspect of ancestor worship. Wargear isn't just weapons and armor, it's a connection to the chapters past and their heroic deeds, when a marine puts on his armor he is literally stepping into the boots of the last guy who wore it, it's a connection to past glories and to his past that he must uphold. There's a huge aspect of ancestor worship in every chapter, even the most practical ones. All of that is erased by the introduction of primaris marines. Their armor is brand new, their tanks are brand new, their mindsets are brand new, they change the unique chapter identities and when they don't it feels forced and unbelievable.

    • @commando7238
      @commando7238 26 дней назад +1

      @@kurthasedd7923like for example I like the idea with the Imperial Fists due to time fighting instead of being more defensive they're pushing in they got whittled down and nearly wiped out and then primaries came and fixed their entire problem out of nowhere

    • @kurthasedd7923
      @kurthasedd7923 26 дней назад

      @@commando7238 Yeh that's a perfect example. There are great ways to change a dynamic for a particular, they have been done before. Contrasting with the Imperial Fists, I look at the Iron Warriors and see a huge change between the Horus Heresy and now, without losing their identity. The Crusade and Heresy saw them wasting lives in grueling sieges, they relied on their logistics to whittle down enemies. M.41 the Warsmith is sieging Hydra Cordatus and the Iron Warriors are infiltrating the planet like the Alpha Legion, performing night time raids, using daemon and xenos slaves etc. but at their core they're still siege masters and salty about everything.
      If they wanted to expand the sizes of chapters though, they should've just changed the codex astartes to accomodate more marines. For me, this would have been a satisfactory solution to the problem, because they're not going to be "magic wand waved - issue gone" deal, but allows for a slow escalation and change rather than playing chess and flipping right to checkers

      I use a thinned layer of PVA glue to keep the sand in place, then you should be able to paint it once it's dried

    I just picked up 12 of these metal marine’s, plus metal Kantor and a customised land raider for them all to travel in. All for Kill Team 2.0

    These look great, really nice job. I do really like the primaris marines and exclusively purchase those for my space marine army now largely down to their far superior scaling, however i would like one small change or two made and that is, please GW put a variety of helmets on the sprue like you used to, there was always a couple corvus and then some helmets had target finders extra cabling etc, in a similar vein, the chest armour always used to have a variety of decorations, an Aquila, little skull, or just a vent port. Made them a bit more interesting and not so much like exactly the same guy in a bit of a different pose. Please just release a little upgrade sprue with a few varieties. If they do end up completely phasing out firstborn marines i'd be pretty sad if i couldn't get some mk 7 helmets to pop on my primaris.

    Damn, I really love that red base coat. I'm gonna try new a new chapter with a dark Fang/Mechanicus Standard Grey base colour soon, and this has inspired me to maybe try giving them a rich purple (?) base coat to make the colours pop a bit more. Worth a try!
