Leaf end wall hook - blacksmithing for beginners

- A leaf end wall hook is a great place to experiment with forging leaves. The leaf adds a decorative element to the hook that sets it apart from the typical J hook. This is a good beginning blacksmith project.

Glad to see you do the leaf with my tool. You can flip the leaf over in that forming stake, you're not hitting it hard enough to deform your chisel marks. Play with it some more you will find a tiny ball peen moves the leaf just fine. enjoy, Steve

So my take on being self-taught and watching your incredible videos and some other RUclips videos Is if you are reading this and you are a beginner like me, I highly suggest making this type of hook with a leaf. Watch this tutorial step-by-step and just follow along This has a lot of beginning apprenticeship skills all wrapped up in one. Im practicing over and over and making a ton of these, thats what I'm doing right now. I think it's really helping me out and I'm finally breaking through. Thank you very much.

Yesterday it was here 97F but it ended with rain. We didn't have that for a few months.

Congrats on getting so rain.
When I made the 2 dozen curtain rod hooks for the wife, (lotsa brownie points!) I measured, used jigs etc. Whilst I thought they all looked the same at the time I made them - Still had to sort them by hand to get the most alike sets to use at each window. 2 weeks after they were made the differences were a lot more obvious than during the process of making them!
I use the matching system quite often to get things that belong in pairs.

Nice little project for a rainy day. I haven't really ever liked my leaves and after watching your video I think it's because I don't do much to give them that natural curve and bend. Looks like I will be trying again! Thanks for the video!

Yeah glad you're getting rain there John, we need rain here QLD is in a drought and has been for some years now. I love making hooks, leaf and horsehead and bulldog.

I use 3/8" round stock for pretty much all of my hooks. I like using it. It seems like it's a good size for most hooks IMO. Nice video John. You deserve more subs. I just noticed you have a lot less than you should have.

Glad to see you getting more rain. The hook came out pretty good, i think i'll try some more leaves today .. i get the leaves looking great but the stem keeps breaking off, i think i either work it too cold or too thin.. gonna try to avoid that today. thanks for the inspiration.

i don't have one, i have not progressed as of yet to a point where i feel my work is good enough to sell
If the point where the leaf joins the stem gets cold it is easy for a crack to develop

Silly question but when you are creating the leaf, you have a hand on the chisel and a hand on the hammer, so how are you holding and guiding the leaf?

Do you leave your propane forge on in between heats? Not sure if I'm working too hard to save on gas or if it's good practice to have it off when your not heating any metal
For normal work I leave it on, unless it will be more than about 15 minutes to get back to it (time spent dressing a tool or cutting materials). For the videos, I often turn it off for improved audio

Can you share any info on those round nose pliers at the beginning of your video? I've tried to find a pair like that but everything I've found is just so tiny, about 5" total length, and really hard to use.

John I have a question, my anvil moves around a fair bit, I try putting wedges of wood under it etc, as I live in a rented place and the landlord lets me forge on the back verandah i can't really bolt it down as there are tiles on the floor. Any Idea's from you John or other smiths watching, thanks in advance.

Yeah I have tried bits of rubber but yeah more rubber got some too, will try that today. I see these blokes with anvils that are so solid, hahah i envy them sometimes, but hey I gotta get around this the best way I can. Thanks for the idea.
Try tar roofing tar paper if the black spots won't be an issue. the tar gets soft and sort of sicks the anvil base to the surface below. If leaving sticky black stuff behind is a problem i am afraid it is just a matter of put the anvil back where you want it throughout the day. Of course the heavier the base the better

Video: I see and hear the changes. Over all better. Somethings need to go and some need to stay. Examples; when you say the leaf hook isn't your idea … I feel this hurts your video. I think your audience assumes your not the original creator of this design. When you do show a creation/design of your making then say so. An example of what to keep would be the short visual of the work being performed. This tells the story of what we can expect before it happens. You intro or 'welcome needs to be shorter and roll off your tongue almost like a jingle. "Educate, Spark & inspire" (long enough …. people can fill in the details) 1 , 2, 3. is long enough. Have you ever noticed a person first and last name sounds best when the combination of the two names are a 2 & 3 syllable; for example, and not a 2 & 2. Also; intro 1) The visual, Intro 2) "Little leaf," intro 3) "Welcome to..." and 4) "So today …. " This is long. You start off with losing people. 1, 2, 3 at a faster pace is best in my opinion. The explanation of the rain on what I can assume is a metal roof is good once. BTW; happy for you all … glad you got the rain …. sad news about the wild fires in the West. Mentioning the tools needed is good. Better if their was a visual along with the naming (but keep it short & fast …. let people guess or wait and see how used). Finally, wear your own logo T-shirt or don't wear any logo T-shirt unless you wish to promote. I said enough. Thanks for the video.
