  • A braided twist handle looks complicated and intricate. But once you know the secret, it is really quite easy. So today, join my in the blacksmith shop while we forge the braided twist handle.

    I enjoy your videos a great deal.
    That braided twist is what a handspinner would call a 2x3 cabled ply. The existence of cabled yarns pre-dates the Bronze age, so I wonder if some smith looked at what his mother, sister and/or wife was doing with her yarn and thought "bet I could do that at the forge, too..."

    "It's amazing how much easier things move when they're hot". This reminded me my first hot-smithing steel after months of cold-working on copper. I was like- wait, shouldn't steel be harder to work on?

    i was weirdly proud of bein able to figure out how to do it just by looking at it (for reference ive never hit a hot piece of metal with a hammer)

    Hey there John. I know I'm way late here with my comment but maybe next time put a hose clamp on the ends there and that might make things a little easier for you. Great job on the braiding too! Well done sir.

    After finding your videos and finding a local metal supplier with perfect drops for blacksmithing cheap I am now just waiting for my local Forge to open for the year and I can't wait to make this and confuse other blacksmiths.     Thank you so much. Love learning black smithing from your vids.
    A little tip. When twisting tieing wire always twist it clock wise if you're right handed. If you tie rebar all day your arm will die twisting wire the wrong way.
