i just got done doing chains and guides on my wifes obd2. everyone was telling me that it is just a horrible job to do, but i found that it was nothing more than time consuming. lots of parts to take off to get to the chains, and nothing more. a couple of metal rulers held the cams at TDC, and a breaker bar on the crank kept things lined up, and it just popped together. and i can sure tell NOW that the old chains were getting noisy, when compared to how the engine sounds now! next step, figuring out why the o2a doesnt want to disengage the clutch properly after bleeding....
Thank you Humble Mechanic. I timed my VR6 last night. It was an exiting experience. It worked like a charm. This video made so easy for me. I feel like I can time any engine now. Once again thank you.
I've been afraid to do the head gasket on my 2002 Civic for this exact reason. It's already had a timing belt done, and I was afraid to disturb it since it's an interference engine. This gave me some confidence though. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the info, I’m about to do this by myself on my gti. I’ve never done anything this big but I feel really confident I’ll be able to do it without to much trouble.
Brilliant. Wish I had this a few years ago while “winging it” in my driveway, propping up the engine some 2x4s. It was a success but I would have felt more confident watching this a few times. Looks soooo much easier with the engine out of the car. One big ugh though: there was a little bit of slack at the top of the top chain which I couldn’t get out and I didn’t want to take a 24 mm on the cam shafts to adjust for fear of screwing up (which I did once when my cam shaft plate slipped out!! Thought I may have bent some valves). Well, it’s been running quiet and well for four years - so close, but not perfect like your job.
Thank you for yet another great video! I've never done an engine rebuild before but your videos as well as many hours of reading the manuals and forums have given me reassurance to tackle my R build
Humble mechanic... I love your videos. I've watched a lot of them and I've never caught you in something that you were wrong about until today... I wish you were right I've always looked up to you and still do... But when you were finding top dead center that was not correct. the Piston dwells at the top of its stroke. Now maybe for putting the timing chain on a VR6 this is all you need to do but you should really look into finding true top dead center. The best way that I have learned is using a piston stop rotating it until the piston stops marking it on the underdrive pulley then rotate the engine other direction till it stops... marking it...m measure the distance in between the two marks cut that distance in half and mark on the crank/ underdrive pulley. usually most OE markings are a little off. I have found several manufacturers across many engine platforms and all the marks are usually a little off. I would say in between 2 and 5 degrees and that's also how you can find if your underdrive pulley has slipped/spun.
Thank you so much for this video Charles! I gotta change the timing chain on my VR Corrado and this video helped me a lot to understand and to time it properly. Greetings from Austria ;)

Important 24v VR6!!! when reinstalling the Camshaft Adjusters, the gear (most of the mass) needs to be turned all the way counter clock wise (left), with the Control plate (near the bolt head when installed) turned all the way clockwise (right)

Today I started hearing what I believe is the tell tail noise of a potentially failed timing chain guide. I'm trying to quickly get smart on how to replace the chain and guides on this engine. Great video !! Do you record your voice separately from the video? Been watching you videos and really like the way you explain things. I am just starting my own channel and want to make better informative videos
This video was very helpful. did the timing on mine this weekend. I have 1 small black ground wire that I cannot seem to place and I cannot remember where it came from. The wire is about 6 inches long with a copper eyelet. It comes off the verticle cylinder that is right behind the coil packs. I think this is a solenoid? I dont know where it goes from there. Its not very long so there are not a ton of choice. Do you know if the wire goes to the coil packs? to the throttle body?
Overall the 12v and 24v Shouldn't be all too different, but the engines don't share the same timing chain or parts. The Overall process should be the basically the same though, Id do some research into it if your looking to change it out just to make sure you have everything covered for the 24v motor just to be sure
Lazaro Carreiro bottom end times the same. The upper is slightly different due to the 24v VVT. There are marks on the cam gears and the VVT control housing. Count 16 chain links between the marks and you're good to go! 24v uses a cam lock tool too.. slightly different. Eurowise has a quick video on RUclips for timing a 24v.
Great video... QUESTION: What is the difference between Cayenne VR6 at 300HP vs. Touareg VR6 at 280HP? Is it easy/plug and play to upgrade the Touareg VR6 to Cayenne spec?
Hey Charles had a question, I just bought a 2000 beetle with the 1.8 ltr turbo and am trying to put a timing belt on but the belt the old belt was shredded so wasn't able to mark tdc, what is the easiest way to set timing? Thanks
Hi humble mechanic! I have a 92 gti with a 93 vr6 corrado engine in it! My dad & I are working on it and right now the car is cranking but not starting. Before it stopped working it started running hot and leaking anti freeze so I’m wondering if it’s the water pump? If this even is something that would stop the car from turning on? Other thing I was thinking was the timing chain. Would love to hear back thank you!
Charles, would you consider discussing, in a video, how this job might be different on the 24v VR6, engine code BDF, installed in the 2004 GTI? Also, once the transmission is removed, is it's reasonable to replace the chain and guides with the engine still installed and supported with a floor jack on one side and the engine mount on the other side or is this a bad idea for any reason? Once again, I appreciate the video and your advice.
Hi Charles I am planning to buy a friend of mine's golf 3 vr6 OBD 1 there are no timing chain noise but wanted to know if it's necessary to change the Chains to the single ones instead of the double what are the pros and cons of either All the Way from 🇿🇦
Is it common for the chain guides and tensioners to be made out of composite? Do other manufacturers make these out of metal? Or would the metal guides cause too much wear on the chain?
Humble Mechanic, I'm about to get this done on my 2007 Q7 3.6 VR6. Is it possible to replace the sprocket off the crankshaft? Basically the lowest part where the lower chain rotates on? Would it even be necessary as long as it looks ok? Thanks.
Hi, at 3:54 you say the cams are locked in place but the keyways for the sprockets are not at the top. I'm assuming you were installing the sprockets on the camshafts prior to locking the cams into place correct?
love all the things you do with vr6 looking to supercharge my vr6 but am also curious what would be better for my 24v vr6, when ordering parts or beefing up the engine with bigger internal parts. would love to hear some feed back from you, thank you.

I have stumbled upon these God like videos! I now know who I can safely ask my question and get a purely knowledgeable based answer. I have a 2018 VW Atlas SEL with the 3.6L V6 (VR6) With 4motion. Are there any mods for this vehicle/motor? Would it be possible to turbo? Would it make a good fit? Basically I'm looking to add lots of horsepower and torque. So far I've seen 1 company do it to the 2.4L. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you!
Awesome as usual always/reliable! Do you have a bb or a way I can get some advise? I used to have a 2 valve, I had an e2 chip, went the gm conversion to ign coil/spliced plug/coil wires, to lower the e2 advance I was able to expand plug gap with a massive boost to throttle response and avoid hot weather pi. Vr6 is just an awesome motor/sound w/T2 exhaust straight out Jetta 3 so no drone. AW I currently live in PDX, I would like some local assistance PDX/SEA with dependable headlight retrofit w/outer rings added w/shroud Morimoto’s Gen 3 Toyota 4R, affixing them properly, rather be involved than mail order of course… Thanks

There is a ground point on one of the brackets
On the intake manifold
@@HumbleMechanic on the actual plastic manifold? or side of upper timing?
There should be a bracket on the manifold. But it may depend on which car you have.
@@HumbleMechanic 01 jetta vr6 mk4, thanks again for help, Do you mean the side bracket that would actaully attach to the plastic intake.
hi humblemechanic ,
I love all your videos and all vw's have not had time to see all of them but i think they are all superb .
Cheers tom uk :)))
Thank you so much
i have a vw golf tdi with a dpf do you know why performance is on or off , or is a petrol gti far better less carbon ?
Cheers Tom :)))))
Great job Charles. This will apply to the 24v too?
I like the marks you make smart if any novice in next 30 years messes with car good chance they will get it right now.
Great video... QUESTION: What is the difference between Cayenne VR6 at 300HP vs. Touareg VR6 at 280HP? Is it easy/plug and play to upgrade the Touareg VR6 to Cayenne spec?
Im not sure on the exact specs, but it may be something as simple as intake, exhaust, and software.
@@HumbleMechanic Thanks. Anyway to upgrade Touareg VR6 to Cayenne or better? I feel like VR6 is too weak for the Touareg weight and needs more power.
Hey Charles had a question, I just bought a 2000 beetle with the 1.8 ltr turbo and am trying to put a timing belt on but the belt the old belt was shredded so wasn't able to mark tdc, what is the easiest way to set timing? Thanks
Did the timing belt fail? 1.8 will bend valves in a heartbeat.
Your video gonna contribute to a better future. Salute
This is really great, can you please make on with the TFSI?
Thanks! I will be posting a teardown video tomorrow. The timing will come later.
Some day can you do a 24V VR6 timing chain video??. Great video btw!!.👍👍👍
I’ll end up doing the R32 at some point
@@HumbleMechanic I'll be waiting for the video!. Thanks bud..
YES! We will actually be doing chains on the R32 at some point
Did it twice, my cam plates line up each time I try it but I have to go a bit past tdc What am I doing wrong
Thnaks for this video been workin on a seat and learned a few new tips ;)
Do u need to prime the tensioner before install ? Thanks
Hi Charles
I am planning to buy a friend of mine's golf 3 vr6 OBD 1 there are no timing chain noise but wanted to know if it's necessary to change the Chains to the single ones instead of the double
what are the pros and cons of either
All the Way from 🇿🇦
Is it common for the chain guides and tensioners to be made out of composite?
Very good video with many details!
Your videos are excellent, thanks for the help
What brand of nail polish do you use? When timing engines I prefer Rimmel lemon yellow. I find it to really help with the procedure hahahaha
LOL, I buy whatever is the cheapest at Target. Usually as bight as I can find.
HumbleMechanic same here 😂😂😂
HumbleMechanic Lol, i got it
AircooledAl whatever my girlfriend has in stock 👌🏽
I use Tipex 👍🏻👌🏻
Brilliant video!
If you're just changing the cams do you still have to take apart the whole front part of the engine to re time it?
Or can I just mark the chain and the gear and line them back up when putting it back together
real good video and tips !!
Did you paint the engine case inside the timing cover? Just curious on the type of paint you used?
No I just painted the outside. This is the paint ruclips.net/video/esXt9r-YoI8/видео.html
I own a 2001 GTI VR6, enjoying the engine rebuild, only complaint is I wish the videos would come out fast. Once a week. Learning a lot, great watching a pro do this. Saving this video for watch later, for future use, when I do the timing chain on my VR6.
what are the signs that the chains are in need or replacement?
do you have a video of a 2 liter chain job that would be awesome
I have stumbled upon these God like videos! I now know who I can safely ask my question and get a purely knowledgeable based answer. I have a 2018 VW Atlas SEL with the 3.6L V6 (VR6) With 4motion. Are there any mods for this vehicle/motor? Would it be possible to turbo? Would it make a good fit? Basically I'm looking to add lots of horsepower and torque. So far I've seen 1 company do it to the 2.4L. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you!
Nice video! Would this be the same procedure essentially for a 3.6 VR6 from the q7/957?
No. That’s a very different engine
Great video as usual, thanks
Awesome as usual always/reliable!
Do you have a bb or a way I can get some advise?
I used to have a 2 valve, I had an e2 chip, went the gm conversion to ign coil/spliced plug/coil wires, to lower the e2 advance I was able to expand plug gap with a massive boost to throttle response and avoid hot weather pi.
Vr6 is just an awesome motor/sound w/T2 exhaust straight out Jetta 3 so no drone.
AW I currently live in PDX, I would like some local assistance PDX/SEA with dependable headlight retrofit w/outer rings added w/shroud Morimoto’s Gen 3 Toyota 4R, affixing them properly, rather be involved than mail order of course…
Thanks
