What Is So Special About A VR-6 Engine?

- The VR-6 engine is a mysterious one and hides some clever engineering inside itself. There are most definitely many interesting aspects about it and it is a shame that it was such an engineering revolution as it looked to be from first sight.

Is it only me or the VR6 really sounds crispier than regular inline 6?
VR engines (especially the ones from vag) are known for their special crispy sound... a lots of poeple (including me) think they are the best sounding 6 cylinders on the market
Owned a 1993 golf vr6 (stock exhaust) - they really do sound good.
They sound like an absolute fart can sometimes.. 🤣
I wonder why they burble/rasp like that? V6's (Nissan VQ) also share it too but less intense, but an Inline 6 (2JZ or B58) sounds very smooth. I assume its because V engines have an odd number of 3 cylinders per bank??
@@Josh-qm4rb their extraordinary sound comes form the difference in length of the inlet and exhaust tubes for the left and right cilinderbanks. I love the sound 😍
The vr6 is one of the best engine noises of all time in my opinion. Also you may not know as you didn't mention in the video but Mercedes Benz also used a 2.8 VR6 engine in the early Vito vans best sounding van ever 😜
It did, but somehow forgot about it later during the video production
@@VisioRacer yeah awesome video anyway dude I really like your content 😄👍
He may not have mentioned it here but look at all of his videos. It seems most are engine related and they look very interesting. I subscribed. This is a good channel.
You ain't kidding
Beautiful ❤️
The fact they fitted a VR6 into a forklift fascinates me
And here I was, thinking I knew every variant of the VR6 engine. Thanks again for this great educational video. Now excuse me, I have to get me a forklift.
It is my pleasure
The VR6 is one of the best sounding engines ever. Just wish they weren't so involved to build up.

I've owned an mk4 vr6 hatch for 18 years basically for the sole reason of how it sounds. NEVER EVER GETS OLD.
I have a 911 and a 24v GTI and I’m always grabbing the keys to the VW. Drove up and down Lake Erie shoreline Saturday and you can hear the wookie echoing through the trees lol.
As an owner of a Golf VR5, I can say the sound of this engine is just amazing, I honestly love it 😍
Vr5 owner here aswell, addicting sound 🙃
Lmao totaly agree...my vr5 lives in a seat thoughXD

I owned a Fulvia for a few years and had a lot of trouble explaining the engine layout to people. But if I referred to the engine as "basically a Volkswagen VR6 with 4 cylinders" the suddenly knew what it meant.
Wasn't it easier to just call it a VR4?
@@satsumagt5284 I did call it that sometimes to try to help explain. Though Lancia merely referred to their engine as a "narrow angle V4" at the time. The VR name hadn't been invented until Volkswagen introduced the VR6.
@@krudmuphinstudioz The term VR is a VW invention, and did not exist in the earlier Lancia iteration of these engines.
I believe that is because VW wanted to emphasize the 6-cylinders-in-4-cylinder space in their marketing, by calling the concept literally "V-Inline", which translated phonetically to {Fau-Reihe} and alphabetically to "VR". The letter V is called "Fau" in the German alphabet, just as Y is called "Ipsilon"!
Eg. {Fau-Wee} when they speak of {Vee-Double-U}
Had a used VR 6 3.6 2008 Passat loved that car for several years just traded it 2 years ago
Actually the other way round. The VR6 is basically a Lancia V4, with two additional cylinders.
W engines by VW were essentially two VR engines joined at an angle. I believe the W8 in the Passat had a 72 degree V angle.
True but the W8 was a terrible engine all the complexity none of the reliability (heads and timing chain & tensioner design issues)
Had one
The W8 was essentially 2 VR4s
Cool Video! I own a Passat b7 with the VR 3.6. It's a cool engine but it have a significant powerloss over time due to sooting of the intake tract. I think the problem was not so severe with the old ones with intake manifold injection. (sry for my bad english i hope it's written correct enough^^)
Common modern issue with every direct port engine
Your English is great Sir.

Had a 1993 mk3 VW golf VR6 2.8 174hp - great engine, fast for it’s time, had great engine sound and was quite fuel efficient when driven reasonably. A friend of mine had a 2000 VW Passat vr5 2.3L 150hp - that was crap - neither fast nor fuel efficient. Great video as always!
I own a seat toledo with a 20v vr5 and i can tell you the 20v engine is awesome it has 170hp and needs 8-10 liters per 100kilometers depending on your driving style the car always surprises me when i can keep up with newer sportier cars on the autobahn. I think the combination of the "weak" 10v and the heavier chassis of the passat just made it a "bad combination"
Mk3 vr6 >>>
I agree, i still have it .
The vr6 3.2l also came in the audi tt mk1(2003-2006) making 247bhp that was paired with a DSG transmission. Also the vr6 3.2l came in the audi tt mk2(2006-2014) which had the same horsepower number, but came with a option 6 speed transmission.
I seen the audi a3 was mentioned, but I wanted to feel included too.
Thank you for hoisting that TT 3.2 DSG flag, now I can get off the screen and onto the wrenches, all kindsa motivated!
i was also waiting for him to speak about the 3.2 VR6 which is an incredible engine. it's almost comparable to the 2JZ in terms of achievable power with stock parts
I had a 12v vr6 mk4 Jetta loved that car beautiful sound
Not to complicated to rebuild did in driveway
@@2wheelfeel93if you thrash one so hard that it needs a rebuild ur very good at destroying cars....most of the ttimes all they need is chaines
lol naw blew a radiator house going down highway over heated and the lifters started ticking has 200000 on it needed timing chain and guides clutch to be done so went all in while I was there and that’s why it was rebuilt
That’s the car I currently have right now, it was a gift to me, and I am trying to make it a project car, but first I need to replace the speed sensor and there’s something no wrong with the solenoid, need to look more into it, but I’ll find it
The wife's old Mk4 vr6 Jetta we bought in 2001 was sitting in the garage for about 8yrs before I dug in for the timing chains and make it roadworthy again.
Then I went and got a Smyth kit and that's what's happening now.
She hasn't seen it yet ,and I haven't really let on.
She can figure it out when I pull in the driveway (hopefully) sometime this spring 😁
We've had two cars with vr6 engines..a golf r32 for about 12 years...no engine issues and a passat r36 which I've had about 6 years and no engine issues.
They both averaged about 28 mpg and sounded great. I'm hoping to keep the passat for another 5 years, mainly because of that engine, i think. Favourite engines of all cars I've had.
The ol 12v vr6 isnt the greatest breather, but she sounds good.
It was made so it'll fit in place of a 4 cylinder, not necessarily performance.
A turbo will fix that, as going NA is very expensive.
The sound they make is quite intoxicating.
There's a guy on here with one in a mk3 that runs 11s no turbo, he's proven everyone wrong that you can't go fast with an NA, but it's been developed to what it is over many years.
Been driving Volkwagen since 1989 and the R32 has become my favorite. My first was a mk1 GTI and I can still remember that car surprised a LOT of people off the line, or rolling down the highway. My Mk5 R32 gets much more of the same reaction. The VR6 engine paired up with a DSG is just an absolute kick in the pants to drive. It's insane what output you can get from a VR6 with any level of modification, and yes, the wookie sound is quite iconic.
If you like the R32 you should look up the guy who put the Passat R36 engine in his R32 its insane
When I heard Lancia v4 I instantly saw the fulvia in my mind
A huge thank you for your video: by far the best, most complete about the VR6. I rode in GOLF III VR6 from the age of 28 to the age of 39: a wonderful car in more ways than one, thanks to this engine. I thought I knew his story very well but you have -again- impressed me! The most fun is the forklift truck from LINDE. I wish your channel a long life!
Thank you, Frédéric!
I own one from 30 to now, age 38. It's my daily since then and love it. Keeps putting a smile on my face every time I drive it.
I love how versatile this engine is too. It can be put in a little hatchback or my big Atlas and run exceptionally well, sound great, and have good reliability.
Oh I miss the sound of the VR6.
Just a small tip on car model pronunciation, Leon is not pronounced Lyon as the city in France, but as Leon, the city in Spain.
The first car I bought when I was in Dubai was a mk4 V6 4 motion with a vr6 engine, felt very special and sounded great
Had a 2000 GTI VR6, got it chipped for 2 step and gosh damn that thing sounded crazy. Hands down best sounding engine I've ever heard. Miss that car but was too expensive to fix.
Well I certainly thought that VW created the VR engine until this video! Thank you for teaching me something new!
My all-time favorite engine sound comes from a VR6. Also my 3.6 Passat CC literally waters my mouth every time I accelerate a bit harder, the sound is just SO FUCKING AMAZING. Co-worker had some trouble understanding the engine layout when I told him about it, though. :D
hey i have a passat vr6 as well and it’s a 2013. so you know much about them?
@@akapaxed7845 Not really, just some stuff I've read online, parroting that information. :D
I really like my VR6 Atlas. It's a big car.
I tell my friends it's an Audi A7 with 20 less things to go wrong and 1/2 the price.
I have a 2019 SEL Premium and aside from wishing it had a Turbo option the way the Audi does, I actually like it just as well if not more than the Q7. I rented a 2019 Q7 for a week when it was new so I had experience with both. Seeing other Q7s on the road the Atlas just has a better overall look. It looks more aggressive and bigger (the Q7 seems to slouch [i.e. it sits lower) compared to the Atlas).
I wish someone would bring back the V4.. but I know it's not really practical for companies. I guess the H4 will do
Are you aware that companies will soon have no markets to sell internal combustion engines? Their hardly going to develop new engines. This video series is a history lesson.
@@Romamb I'm aware.. It's just a wish lol
the V4 has a lot of sense in a 2 strokes uniflow overcharged engine
even with its 90° offset betwee piston and firing interval
My VR6s from the past sounded like V8 mustangs.
I have this 4:54 2.8L 200 hp VR6 engine in my 2004 MKIV GTI. Engine code BDF. The engine requires premium 91 octane fuel. Regular fuel (87 octane) is inadequate. I'm interested in understanding why you believe regular fuel is suitable for this engine.
The staggered inline, single cylinder head design is probably my favorite. How cool would a 4.0L VR8 making 450HP be? Bet it would sound amazing, and the maintenance is so easy to do on these because it's like working on an inline engine.
Staggered and in line? It can’t be both…. It’s on a single crank but two separate planes the pistons are operating in so in my eyes, this is a ‘V’ design but the angle is so tight it can have 1 cylinder head , a normal inline 6 cylinder is waaay smoother and sounds like a normal 6 but this does not, it sounds ‘lumpy’ like a V6….🤷♂️
the V4 has a lot of sense in a 2 strokes uniflow overcharged engine
even with its 90° offset between piston and firing interval
Good summary! You could have added the W12 / W8 engines, they are the largest VR type engines Volkswagen ever made, as the W12 is basically 2 VR6 enginges on the same crankshaft.
Next time perhaps
What about the Lambo W engine the badest of all.
VR6T > 2.7T, best upgrade for B5 S4! (Y)
What about the Ford V4 that was manufactured in their factory in Germany? Saab used em as well as English car manufacturers I believe, didn't this motor predate those mentioned in this vid? I could be mistaken, of course, im just asking to ask is all....
BMC's Duncan Stuart developed an experimental Lancia-inspired 18-degree SOHC V4/V6 engine family that used a toothed rubber belt to drive a centrally-mounted camshaft, being conceived at the behest of Leonard Lord from about 56-58 (who wanted to replace BMC's various engines with a common engine family - the later E-Series being conceived for a similar unrealistic purpose) before being cancelled in late-62. The V4 was tested in a 1.1 and 2.0 forms (in the likes of the MGA, first MGB prototype and possibly even one A40 Farina in 1.1 form), though the V6 remained a paper project. The BMC 18-degree V4/V6 project however was dropped because of its alleged bulk/weight, inability to be mounted transversely in the upcoming FWD 1100/1300 and 1800/2200 (only longitudinally Triumph 1300 style - unlike the VW VR6), reputedly sounding rough by MG engineer Syd Enever who disliked the uneven exhaust note of the V4 configuration, being too costly to develop (and the cost of requiring a thorough refit of the Longbridge engine production facilities) as well as once the A-Series engine proved capable of being enlarged from 948cc to 1098cc (later 1275cc).
Exelente Motor VW 👉👍 Que Salió En Golf Jetta y Passat 👍
I had no idea! Thanks again for posting the different and unusual engines.
Love your channel! And todays upload is awesome. This is absolutely one of the best summaries of this engine configuration I have seen! Thank you and please keep up the good work!
Heard the VR6 was also conceived as a 2.4-litre 24v during its development before being enlarged to 2.8-litres 12v by the time it reached production.
So two VR6 engines together is pretty much the VW W12 engine? Like in the Phantom?
Not pretty much ,exactly. The Bugatti W16 is 2 VR8s in the same style
jep this are two vr6 engines smashed together. Piech a former VW boss loved these engines thats the reason even bugatti got a W16 engine
There is a w8 too and just like any vr engine they sound siiiiick
I miss my old 1997 Jetta GLX VR6. The engine was bomb proof and sounded amazing! The best sounding version was the original found in the Corrado and MK3 GTI and Vento/Jetta due to its aluminum intake manifold. The later versions had a plastic intake manifold which muffled the sound!
A VR6 engine in a forklift truck?? Now I've heard everything!
yeah I was also surprised, but it also makes sense. More cilinders means more torque at lower rpm, and with the low combustion given by Lpg you need as many as possible. Also fits into a small space
Thanks for explaining this engine! I just recent bought a B7 Passat with the VR6 and every noise that comes out of it is music to my ears, I knew a little bit about it but this further explained it

Actually the original VW VR6 was a Diesel engine I’m pretty sure. Also I wouldn’t mind a ‘19 Passat GT VR6 6spd!
Something to note: the 2.8 VR6 was only FWD. While the 2.9 VR6 was always coupled to a 4motion (4WD) drive train. VW did this to compensate for the loss of powering 2 wheels more.
Corrado vr6 was a 2.9 and fwd.

Why wouldn't different power peaks at different engine speeds be beneficial in creating a flat torque curve?
That's what the goal is, for a street engine, a broad, flat, torque curve. (not a race engine)
What he described of different cylinders making different power would run about S smooth as an engine with a weak cylinder from low spark or low compression.
@@chesspiece81 it's one half of the engine high, the other half low(er). So every other cylinder is slightly lower in power, not one cylinder with negative power (like a misfire), so it's still balanced.
@@Iowa599 doesn't work that way, you can tune with different cam timing to extend the power band and not be so peaky. But different cylinders having different power, compression, and different exhaust or intake pulses impacts the other cylinders. The intake and exhaust pulses help scavage help with intake timing.
The different port lengths can cause an imbalance power and torque wise if the intake and exhaust manifold lengths or cam timing isnt tuned to equalize the power outputs cylinder to cylinder.
@@chesspiece81 compromises for ability don't advance technology, and the point of this idea is to treat it like a V made of two engines stuck together at the crank. Two separate engines, one tuned for so many rpms, the other tuned for a different rpm. You could just tune them to the same, but you're already forced not to, by the length of the ports.
You're saying to just forget it, half-ass it. There are people who modify the hell out of these, one of the last things they change is the intake manifold. Why?
It works good at everything, and it's not frequently considered something to make better. The people who do are making a shit load, and changed it when they hit it's limits by making a lot.
Not because that shit's half-assed, like you think. It has been carefully designed & tested to be the best it can possibly be at everything.
Same goes for the exhaust.
Except General Motors. There they do whatever the at-work kindergarten class approves.
V6 engine is great, but a VR6 has more rasp and revs faster, and inline 6, like the B58, 2JZ and RB26 engines all have 1 scream.

5 cylinders are amazing
Sound from VR6 is awesome. I wonder why WV is not using this design today, instead of V6, it would be their signature. Of course with turbo, in audi RS series :-)
I believe they shelved it for emissions reasons and went the direct injection route.
@@MrTheHillfolk hmm I don't think this engine layout couldn't be direct injection & turbo from factory.

4:45 That‘s not quite correct. The VR6 doesn‘t have a bore of 91 or 92 mm. Its stroke is at 90.3 mm and for the 2.8 L the bore is at 81 mm and for the 2.9 L at 82 mm. Other than that, great video!
Yeah my mk4 12v has a 82mm
And it’s 2.8L
@@TooFlyNico But 90.3 x 82 x 6 translates to 2861.26 ccm -> 2.9 L. You maybe have a bored 2.8 L which now has 2.9L.
Your dialect sounds weirder than a tvr flat plane crank v8... Where are you from?
Buying a Horex VR6 would be a ridiculously expensive venture.
Here's a 740 hp Golf VR6 turbo made by a company in Canada. ruclips.net/video/DnR6FBRC0F4/видео.html
It just is an awesome engine, I owned :
1997 Passat 12V VR6
2001 GTI 12V VR6
2004 R32 24V VR6
😢
Wish I didn't lose my R32 to a stupid flood!
Bring back to awesome music 🎶 from the VR6 at least as an option, there are alot of enthusiasts putting the VR6 engine in the MK7 GTI & R
I love VR6 engines!! They aren't just a gimmick either, they are awesome for the innovation made by VW's. I love that they can fit in the same engine cavity as an I-4 engine. Straight 6 engines don't make any sense to me, they're HUGE and unnecessary. Although I guess VW can't talk about inefficient sized engines like their W's...especially in the very short lived Phaeton's.
VR6 got too complicated towards the end. The move to DOHC and a criss-crossing valve train was totally unnecessary. They should have simply kept the SOHC 2-valve design and bump the displacement to 3.6 liters. We know that a modern 2-valve engine can easily make 75~80 bhp/liter in a properly warrantied, mass produced, car. That's 270~288bhp and it is good enough for an engine that fit in the space of a big four potter. A 2-valve engine will actually be more economical of fuel too with its lower parasitic frictional losses.
love how simple you explain things for people who dont have know how of engines so anyone can understand, but also ones who know alot about the workings of engines are still indepth about there workings, thanks again for the wonderful videos
Your thumbnail at the beginning mislabeled the cylinder designations. The back row is for the odd number cylinders (1,3,5) and the front row is for the even numbered cylinders(2,4,6).
ive NEVER understood the argument that an inline 6 engine is too long. that give you an incredible amount of space for efficient intake/exhaust/forced induction opportunities while leaving massive amounts of space for all extra support systems such as ac/brakes/electrical systems/EV additions. next issue is they say the crank cant handle the power because of torsional failures and thats why v6's are stronger. 90's inline 6 crank could usually handle upwards of around 550hp. engineering and metallurgy has came a long way which they could easily increase that but then you have a car with quarter mile of probably high elevens for a "daily driver".
Fukken hell your english has improved since the last time i watched you
Don't worry my 2021.5 Atlas is carrying the flag with a VR6 and modified exhuast. She sounds like a dream (actually a wookiee nightmare!)....
Volkswagen STILL puts the VR6 in their Atlas (US market) and I believe the Touareg up until it’s production end in 2020 (please correct me on that..)
Volkswagen and Audi make Two great engines, One being the VR6 and the other being the inline five. It's unfortunate that they don't utilize either engine more than they do. For instance, The Arteon would have been outstanding with either of those engine options.
OMG that sound god I miss my baby 2008 3.6 vr6 I spanked a BMW and a infinity Q36 man I love that throaty sound yes she was my baby girl 😂
It is also in the mk1 audi tts, and possibly the mk2 as well I cannot remember. I have an 04 mk1 audi tt quattro and it is so much fun, I like the 3.2 vr6 over the 1.8 any day.
One very notable thing about the VR6 is that it seems to be the engine everybody has an opinion on. At least in german car culture. And there is the widely spread misconception about it being an engineering failure. Mind you that "opinion" is usually picked up by people with no clue...😂✌️
I have a Mk4 VW Jetta GLI (First owner) and a 2013 Porsche 991.1 C2S. Both manuals. Both are a lot of fun!
I have a VR6 Jetta with a GTX35 and that thang moves out!!!!!!
the cylinder location in the video's thumb is not correct .
