This was such a personal song to me back then. Still is, actually. The Berlin wall fell in '89 and it shook the world. Then the first Gulf War started in '90. Being 17, there was a bunch of anxiety around if all of us were going to be finding ourselves up to our eyeballs in sand in some other country in a year. A year later, I graduated. A few months later I was in love. A few months after that my heart was in shreds. There was so much change going on in the world and my life, this song was a catharsis for all of it, the sad, the sweet, the scary, and the euphoric. I can look back at all of it now, even the most painful, with fondness now when I hear this song.

I grew up a military brat in Germany in the mid to late 80s to early 90s. I lived in Southern Germany when Eastern Germany opened up and the Berlin Wall came down. I can remember vividly many of the germans around me their reaction. I can remember my german teacher looking at the TV screen with people climbing onto the wall. Something that was NEVER allowed in many areas. To see the people taking anything they could to destroy the Berlin Wall. Through his beard and mustache, you could see the tears streaking his face. It really struck me how much of a meaningful thing this was. To recognize you are watching something that is a major event in history. If you really do not know the history of the Berlin Wall you might want to watch a documentary about it. Here are a few suggestions.
Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall.

For me as a german the the hymn of the german unification. A very important time in my life because my mother fled the GDR and was separeted from her family and friends. But could see from news coverage and photos what it meant to the German people when it finally happened. There would no longer be an East and West Germany the Soviet Union would soon collapse ending the cold war. Your "correction" is superfluous at best and given you came back again, probably more along the lines of trolling. Anyone aware of the historical events surrounding the song will ALSO appreciate life in the 80s - which was the point. I should add, that since you've pointed out the importance of the wall falling - that happened in the 80s, not 1990 when the song came out.

It captured the feeling in Europe on the brink of the end of the Cold War when everione was looking hopeful to the future, East and West, and nowhere so much as in Germany, where the big change (opening of the border between East and West Germany and unification) that would come a few month later was already palpable.

Most people of a certain age who grew up the other side of the iron curtain have a lump in their throat or a tear in their eye to this day when they hear this song, with good reason. A lot that they seemed doomed to endure was simply swept away.
The late 80s and early 90s were extraordinary times. As a British kid, I knew that most of the fighting age men in my family had seen combat in WW1/2, and some didn't come home. Up to the fall of the iron curtain and Berlin Wall, it seemed natural to wonder if the missiles would come, and assume that I could find myself somewhere on the continent with a gun in my hand one day.
We thought the end of the Cold War was the end of all war. Very naive, but those were the times.

OMG! Maggie.... I've been a subscriber to your channel for awhile now, when I joined you were reacting to Dimash early music and I also am a big Opera fan (and a Dear), but I had been looking for reactions on my favorite rock band of all times and WOOOHOOO!!! I found you reacting to one of the most epic ballads! I am looking forward to you listening to some more of their classics. Over 40 years of history, this band I feel is kinda underrated; they've been the inspiration to many others, they broke the barriers of language and literally had to learn English to get to the big audiences, but they have albums and songs in Japanese, German, Spanish, English. They were the first rock band to ever perform at the former USSR; the kids back then would know all of their songs from the radio only.
At one point in his career vocalist Klaus Meine was within an inch of losing his voice and went through surgery. He asked his fellow band members to search for another vocalist, but they were close enough to wait for him to recover and go back Rocking like a Hurricane.
I strongly recommend you find the video where he sings this very song with Jose Carreras. It's awesome!!! Loved the reaction, can't wait to see more.

I was 10 when these things took place have it also run in the family since my father's family fled the gdr shortly before the wall was built. They fled on foot from somewhere Uckermark to berlin then hopped on a train south. Imagine an injured WWII soldier returned from POW camp in Russia not being able to walk properly anymore taking his 4 children between 4 and 10 walking 100km. They fled because grandfather was asked to spy on his neighbors by the STASI.
I visited the GDR as a kid so this was impactful even for me at 10 years old finally reunification easier travel for the other part of the family etc. This song was my entrance to the Scorpions.

It’s the history that makes this song so touching and hart felt. It was when the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was reunited! It was also a confirmation of American foreign policy and a push for freedom for the East German people to reunite with their German brothers and sisters! Very emotional time in history of Germany and our country!

The lead singer of Scorpions the guy who's holding the mic in his hand wearing a black hat in this video his name is Klaus Meine. This song is 1 of my favorite peace/freedom song. This song was made in support of the taking down of the Berlin wall on November 9, 1989 that used to separate East & West Germany until November 9, 1989 when the Berlin wall was taken down. I can't even imagine how I'd feel if our government was to put a huge wall in the center of the USA to separate the West from the East part of the USA. People in the USA would tear the wall down just like the Germans cuz putting up a huge wall to separate the West from the East of any country is completely totally wrong for a countrie's government to do that to the citizens of it's country.

Very disappointed that apparently no one gave you the meaning behind this song while you were watching. Not your fault; you surely weren't alive at the time, but this was a significant ballad during a time of great world change for the better. It probably would've meant more to you though than who Klaus sounds like, were you aware of the meaning. Always fun to see you react to the stuff from my era though. Thanks Maggie.

It’s awesome new generations listen to our music. It is tough to try and explain what the kids of 80’s had. We didn’t have cell phones. Or very very few did, that was all still in beginning stages. Internet wasn’t a thing yet. We were enjoying MTV it was our other way besides FM radio. To hear music, besides cassettes or Albums.
What was happening in Europe was on the news nightly. The Fall of the Berlin Wall was an important time in history. We knew nothing of what the people of Germany had lived with. Other then from news reports. Family that might have served over there. Or lessons in school history classes. When this video (original one) came out. It was perfect.

The very first time I heard this was while watching a Filipino band in Singapore. I had been at sea so didn't get to hear it before that. LOVE Scorpions.
    Favorite song from them.
I saw them live at the GSR Casino in Reno three days after Tom Petty died.
A friend and I bumped into a couple of them after the show in the Casino bar and they hadn't even heard about it. STUNED would be the easiest term to use.
The person you think sounds like him might be David Gates from the old 70s soft rock band "Bread"🎸

And yes, in those times we didn't have any cell phones or glow sticks and so we used sparklers or lighters! (And yes, we survived it!!!!!)
And as a German I have to defend our taste of music: This song was the inofficial anthem of Germany's reunification in 1989/90 and not (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) David Hasselhof's "Looking for freedom"!!!

It was such a hopeful and exciting time in history. For most of my life WW3 hung over everything like a dark cloud. And right before my eyes the wall came down! It had seemed like an inviolable fixture for my whole life, and here it was being dismantled by ordinary citizens, and East German soldiers alike. This song always brings a tear to my eye remembering, it's something no one can possibly understand unless they lived through it.

On this one I think you missed the forest for the trees. I can't blame you though you are just too young to have truly experienced this song. I was stationed in West Germany when the Soviet Union failed and Germany was re-united at last. The Scorpions had written this song about the Soviet people during perestroika and was an absolute master piece of song writing and singing for a very unique event of history. Outside of knowing or having lived through those times you lose out on a lot of the meaning the song has. Trying to be as fair as possible here but this was something I was right in the midst of so it is impossible for me to be objective about this.
This was truly hope and change of it's time. Now we just have putin and that hope has been tarnished.
