  • @SidneyBroadshead

    The biscuits are rancid (notice it had mold growing inside a sealed airtight can). They are 15 x 4-panel biscuits per wax paper packet.
    They came in either 2.5 gallon or 5 gallon cans.
    The large square-section 5 gallon cans (like the one above) came 2 to a cardboard box.
    The smaller rectangular-section 2.5 gallon cans came 6 to a cardboard box.

    Very cool!! Mixed feelings about the fact that it was made for survival and never needed and now just wasted. But very interesting to see what’s still out there. I wonder if the makers of these things have studied what happens to survival food that’s outdated in order to make things that can last longer.

    • @SidneyBroadshead
      @SidneyBroadshead Год назад

      The crackers and biscuits were made from Bulgur Wheat, as a recent Egyptian archeological dig had found preserved plant samples in a tomb from 3,000 years before. The design was kind of rushed and every company had different cracker and biscuit recipes, which is why the can weights are different. When fresh they were kind of bland and unappetizing.
      They actually started giving it away as disaster relief aid. An aid mission to Guatemala complained that the crackers had gone rancid in their tins and would give you bowel cramps and diarrhea. Civil Defense pulled and tested the crackers and biscuits and concurred with the complaint. It was discontinued as a stock item in 1977 (and noted to never be reintroduced), a year after the existing stores were pulled. The remainder was pulverized and sold as a component for chicken feed.
