They missed an opportunity at EVO. Going full Pro-Wrestler.
Imagine, they have some exhibition matches for fun, give audience members a chance to play at EVO with no money on the line, just fun so there's no pressure. Then after a few legitimate rounds, two plants are chosen. They start playing and the line cuts out. Then we get this announcer that sounds fresh out of a Max Headroom analogue horror starts speaking about how "YOU ARE NOT READY!" Showing a few frames of the MvC games here and there as what sounded like a buzz starts rising into familiar music. Then Ryu uppercuts Cyclops and we hear paper tearing and it goes straight into the announcement from our horror narrator as he proudly brings us the collection and a simple warning, "The Past has returned, but the future is ready to attack. YOU ARE NOT READY!" And we see Morrigan and Chun Li walk away.
What that means? That's for Capcom to decide, but the speculation and the manly tears of joy would be flowing.

Too theatrical. That'd be more of a CEO type of things. Evo is more of a "just give us the trailer and maybe take a bow and then fuck off" kind of vibe. Even in context it's not really the right energy either for MvC2.

The normies aren't watching EVO. Showing this in a Nintendo Direct first will probably get more peoples eyes on it than EVO ever could. People will see this as a massive collection of Marvel fighting games and will be interested purely based off that. The hardcore crowed, watching it at EVO or through a Nintendo Direct, will always know of its existence. Yes a live EVO stage announcement would have created a big moment for those in the know, but if these games are going to sell, then I think revealing it on the biggest selling (soon to be) console ever is a safer bet.
Personally I thought this was a fantastic announcement, caught everyone by surprise and as a bundle, it seems near perfect. And as you said, something is bound to happen at EVO as everyone's focus is on MVC2 more than anything else for many a reason. Nice discussion.

I never take "normies" into account because I'm not used to them being relevant in this space, but I suppose X-Men 97 and the current soft-reboot of the X-Men comics - or at least, moving the comics into a new era - makes it a little more mainstream-adjacent than it would have otherwise been.
I think what rubs me the wrong way is that it wasn't treated with the appropriate fanfare from the Nintendo end. Stuck it right in the middle of the Direct and then moved onto Mario Party like nothing of consequence actually happened. At least give it a couple-minute segment where Capcom or Digital Eclipse people are explaining why this is so huge, and closer to the end of the presentation.
I saw a lot of streams where people just dropped Nintendo Direct coverage to dive deeper into the Marvel announcement. That did Nintendo no favors, either.

@@littleakibagames Yeah I can agree on that. Sometimes that Nintendo Direct moments can feel a little underwhelming in their moment of reveal, as if in this case it was just another average announcement.
I mean this was also the first time all these games have been on a Nintendo system too, so yeah, a little more fanfare would have been nice.
I really enjoy your discussions, keep up the good work.

The ratio mod is literally the best thing to happen to MvC2, but it's something developed by the community, and thus, Capcom likely won't implement it. I'd love it if they did, but you know how these corporations think. If they have to even consider crediting someone, or paying them for that work, they just won't do it. It'll eat up profits. There are some ROM hacks for TMNT 1 NES that completely fixes the game, and would be trivial to implement into the collection, but Konami didn't add those in as options. I don't see this being different sadly. Worse, because this is a fundemental change.
I'd like to be wrong, and someone at their development house has enough pull to get it to happen. If it's Digital Eclipse, I could see Frank Cifaldi holding someone's feet to the fire to make that happen.

So then the question becomes how we get it in front of Frank.
