I hope you enjoyed the first voice over video on the channel! If you have any pointers as to how to improve on the video (as it really felt like editing my first video all over again!) or there was something you really liked, then I would greatly appreciate it if you left a comment.
Loved it! I love people with british accent. I don't know why, but for me it's just a great thing to listen to and also a good thing in the background. Very good for a first video with your voice in it.
There’s a reason LNER’s slogan is “Edinburgh to ACTUAL London in 4 hours and 20 minutes”. I’ve travelled between the two cities many times and can confidently say I am Team Train. You don’t have to arrive an hour and a half before, no security or restrictions on what you can pack (I got a glass nail file confiscated at the airport once - oops), it’s more spacious, I can settle down with a book or have a nap or just enjoy the scenery. The LNER buffet bar has more choices than airline snack trollies, the toilets are nicer, and you step off right in the centre of London, rather than having to get an express train from Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick or Luton.
You dont have to arrive that early before a flight. As long as you check in online and you only have hand luggage, you only have to give yourself enough time to get through security before your gate closes. Before lockdown I regularly travelled to Paris and Amsterdam and always got to Birmingham Airport 50 mins before flight departed.
@@adjo82 'i dont have to turn up early to fly, what are you on about? except the turning up 50 minutes before'...so you have to turn up atleast 50 minutes early? lol
That is really interesting. I was expecting the plane to be a lot quicker, but like you say Dylan, the faff slows it down and it's pretty clear that the train is the better option all round. Yay for the train!!!
Adding a small suitcase that needs to be checked on the plane would already have slowed the trip down by 20 minutes. The higher comfort and the cheaper price would make me chose the train almost any time on trips within Europe.
Living in Northwest London, we have the odd situation that it's simpler to get to Gatwick by public transport via Thameslink than it is to get to Heathrow plus you get the added benefit on Thameslink of changing at Blackfriars and getting the best view there is of London and the River Thames while waiting for the connection.
@@jacksimmers1016 yes, but only if you fly from more distant airports such as Luton with its much less convenient connections, and are prepared to compromise on departure time. So if you have a railcard the train can be both quicker and no more expensive than a flight from Luton if you include the full travel time and cost. I'm often taking camping equipment which means that I can't fly unless I buy my fuel at the destination and pay extra for luggage.
Not forgetting there is a faster train that only stops at Newcastle and as Adrian rightfully says 20 minutes if you want a suitcase and then waiting to collect during arrival. All said isn't the train a little more civilized.
Hahaha, pure facts man. A late arrival/departure will get you fired or suspended without pay for at least a month in Japan, a possible warning/talking to in the UK if it happens often enough, and nothing at all in the US.
@@Noam-Bahar Then there's the US' Trolleybuses, a bus running on light rail/streetcar catenary that cannot leave it or else it wouldn't work. I'd almost like to punch the guy who invented it haha
@@Noam-Bahar That all is true. Though I too would strongly prefer the rail vehicles instead as it's not only an insult to the versatility and use of buses, but it also is just a clown train dressed as a bus. Might as well just use the real deal, the rail, instead, you know? No logic to trolleybuses at all. You either make a rail line out of it, or you just use actual buses. If you want a set of transit lines that are stuck on their own proprietary corridors, you want a train. If you'd like to have a adaptable, versatile, go-nearly-anywhere form of transit, you use buses. It's that simple. It's the one major reason I actually dislike trains as a mode of transit. If something happens on the line(s), it screws the entire system up and over until whatever it is is removed or resolved. It cannot detour, or continue. It is stuck. Screwed. I'm not against rail at all however, I'd adore having some of that quality frequent service and all over European high-speed intercity and international rail services here in the US. Just... be smart, and separate it from grade, to it's own proprietary track-ways, rather than allowing any grade crossings at all unless absolutely necessary, like when coming into a station that cannot be elevated nor underground. It also is one of the countless reasons to me, buses are by far the best, most practical, fun and efficient modes of transit out there. Specifically in the form of true BRT service - the entirety of all lines using exclusive lanes or roadways made for them only, priority at signals, and the systems on all buses that automatically take pictures and generate reports to local police of violating motorists using or parking in the lanes. The buses 90% of the time can get out of jams, backups, and make detours/reroute around and by anything that slows them down or blocks their paths in order to keep up with the schedule, and get right back on their usual routes. Something trains again, have no ability to do at all.
@TheRenaissanceman65 unless you live in either of the coasts that are comparable to size and density. There a train would make sense. Like the Acela if it was made good and fast. Also if he had taken the tube would he would make the trip in a little more time but a lot cheaper like you said.
@aviagamer None taken. I'm a New Yorker, which is like the only decent place to live in the US and it's still not great compared to basically anywhere in Western Europe.
@TheRenaissanceman65 There are tons of densely populated corridors in the US for real. The Northeast Corridor from Boston to DC, the Southeast Corridor from DC to Miami, the Texas Triangle, the North-Midwest with all the rust belt cities around Chicago, California, and Cascadia. The only places that aren't really suitable for HSR are the Great Plains, the Rockies, and the Southwest.
Loved the new style. Your voice over is very personable, knowledgeable and the right amount of content. Thank you. Good choice of subject too. Congratulations.
Great video, train is the most relaxing. We did something similar 15 years ago in Germany. There were 4 of us on a business trip to Frankfurt, the next day we had to go to Munich. 2 went by plane, we jumped on a high speed train and travelled 1st class and 2 Germans jumped in a Mercedes and belted down the Autobahn. We got to Munich Bahnhof first and we got picked up 20 minutes later by the Mercedes. After another half hour the plane travellers arrived at the office by taxi from the airport. We had a really nice journey, very relaxing, had lunch etc. The car driver and especially the passenger were totally stressed after clocking up 260kph for most of the journey. The flyers were pissed off at all the hanging around at the airport. Best part of the trip was after doing an afternoon of meetings we all went to Oktoberfest.
It is fun flying on the Autobahn, but it is stressful (if you are doing it right). You have to keep an eye on the horizon, cause if a truck going 80kph enters a passing area 1/2mi ahead and pulls out, you have to hit the brakes NOW. Plus at those speeds a Mercedes is probably only getting 10mpg (at $8/gal).
This comment will get lost I'm sure, but I regularly traveled London to Edinburgh to see family for a large chunk of my life. While the trains are not always on time, the last few times I have flown to Edinburgh from Heathrow (last being in 2019) were an absolute nightmare. Every single time the flight was delayed both on the way to Edinburgh and and from Edinburgh - and upon arriving back in to London, we were stuck on the plane for an hour because we had been placed in international arrivals and had to wait for them to procure a bus to take us to the right part of the airport. Even if the train were significantly slower centre to centre, I would still take it as in my experience it is a far more pleasant and reliable way to travel. Plus it is more ecologically friendly - so it's a double win in my books.
Same thing for London-Paris, London-Manchester, London-Glasgow, London-Brussels, Paris-Brussels, Paris-Frankfurt, Berlin-Frankfurt etc. Trains take almost the same time for city centre to city centre travel (if you factor in airport formalities like getting there and checking in early, which negates the planes' speed advantage) and yet trains pollute waaaay less
I really enjoyed this video! As others have said, it's nice to hear the voice behind the words! One thing to consider - if you had had luggage with you, the train would've won hands down. The extra time spent checking in and waiting for your luggage at the end could easily have added an hour to the plane journey.
“Plane or Train with Dylan” that was brilliant Dylan, muck better than having to read the subtitles. And we get to enjoy your very entertaining commentary. One for your “show reel” ✈️🚅xxx
I appreciate the style of filming showing where you are walking instead of just instantly cutting from transport to transport. It's a really nice way to show those who are clueless on where you're supposed to go to catch the public transport.
I found your entertaining film professional, informative and valuable, so thank you very much Dylan. Your charming, yet no nonsense approach is to be admired.
There are some other factors to consider: 1) Train is less likely to get a delay or cancellation than the plane and also you will never be bumped from a train trip due to overbooking. 2) Train has much more frequent departures than the plane. In that case, one is more likely to find a more convenient departure time. Surely, train is the way to go.
British trains are famous for their unreliability. This video is PR for the rail companies. If you don't believe me ask ten British people who aren't railway enthusiasts, just people trying to get to work, not one will recommend rail in the UK.
This is a journey I've done plenty of times, both on train and plane. It all depends on circumstances and of course where you start and finish. I live 20 minutes in a minicab from Heathrow, but over an hour to Kings Cross on train/tube (I wouldn't take a cab into central London) which tips the timing in favour of the airport. If you have loads of bags, the plane is easier, especially if you take a cab, vs having to use a commuter train and tube. I also have lounge access, which makes the wait at Heathrow more tolerable, depending on time of day of course. Pre-Covid, the lounges early on a Monday morning would be manic, for example. Plane is also easier with young kids, as they're only locked into their seat for a short period of time. I'd still rather take the train, but practicality usually tips in favour of the plane, for me at least. Plus it adds to my air miles and status. BTW, you should take the airport bus into Edinburgh. It's faster than the tram. Bus lanes all down Corstorphine Road. You can also get a normal train to Heathrow from Paddington, which is not much slower but quite a bit cheaper, or at least it was last time I used it. The tube is more direct though and the trains come every few minutes. Depends on when your flight is and how long you're willing to wait. You also have to factor in the costs. Both train and plane can be astronomical. Sometimes it's one or the other. And advance fares are not always an option. Good video though.
A lot of the time, when looking at a return fare, I've actually found the plane to be cheaper round trip (Manchester) than a train. Of course that's before factoring in Railcard - that was kind of cheating to use that though when you're also looking at pricing. And yes, absolutely breaking up the journey is important. Plus I'd rather be in a decent airplane seat with acceptable legroom in the air for an hour than on a poor suspension, poor seat 800 series train for 4 hours+.
@@aidenstanley7305 Tho you're also destroying the planet by flying. So, if the difference ain't night-and-day, nobody in their right mind flies within the UK.

@@nanderv You're right, and it's one of the inadequacies of Heathrow. The only trains you can get from there go into London. If you're flying long-haul from somewhere else in the UK, with BA at least, it's far more convenient to take a connecting flight, and it usually doesn't add much to the price. Sometimes it's cheaper. It's a downside for those of us in West London (and there are plenty of us). Flying is usually more convenient, but we should be taking the train.
@@acciid when i was flying on the route up to edi or gla i was using LCY checkin was swift being last than 30mins. and the DLR got me into the city quite quickly. with 1st class on the train being £250 plus. the plane was quicker and mostly cheaper.
Hi, this is a great video for foreigners like me who love to travel. First time I traveled from London to Edinburgh I was a young student in Aug. 1981. I think it took me a whole day. I am not sure if I would call the 6€ a rip-off for the train ride from the airport to the city center. It is reliable, on time, and quick. Here in Vienna, one pays 12€ for the airport to city center train. It is 9km. All in all, I found the trip by train far less stressful than flying. Also, compared to what such a ride will cost you here in Central Europe, say from Vienna to Berlin or Frankfurt, it will cost much more and probably be more crowded. Yes, I will now go and see what other videos you have. Thank you, from Vienna.
Whenever I had business in Germany or in nearby foreign countries, I tried to take the train from Berlin the day before and back in the evening instead of the flight. It is also better for the company if you go to meetings well rested. - Cheers, Heinz
Dylan! This was fabulous!! It was good to hear you after all these videos, and you did a great job. You were easy to listen to, you got the balance right between speaking and quiet filming, and came across as someone with a knowledgable stance on travel without it feeling patronising. You've a career ahead of you in vloging if you decide you'd like it! Really enjoyed it, and, Edinburgh to London and back in a day? There's a 'to-do' for my bucket list! Thanks for an amazing channel.
Thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed style of this and was surprised at how close the times were. You need to do some more walking around Edinburgh to build up your stamina!
Well done Dylan! Your voice commentary is perfectly acceptable and must save you a lot of time writing text and extra editing. This video is so useful to travellers who want to make this trip, and could be used as a reference. I'd choose the train over the plane any day, not just because I hate flying, but it's more economical and certainly more eco-friendly, and the slightly quicker plane journey doesn't compensate for this.
Definitely liked the new style of the video, since it felt more interactive (of sorts) and let your personality pop through. I've been watching your videos for a bit now, and I was hoping you might give this style a try. I'm looking forward to the next one!
And Dylan TALKS!! Nice to see more of you and hear you, mate. I'd take the train every time, it is so much less stressful than all that airport carry-on...
I've travelled the east coast line several times and have always found it a pleasant and interesting journey, probably finishing faster than I would have liked. Contrast that with the trip from Sydney to Brisbane on the XPT which takes at least 12 hours by night and if you take the day train (only one per day) you end up on an even more incredibly boring bus from Casino to Brisbane because it's a single track reserved for freight traffic. I can't wait to go back to the UK again!
By the time Japan celebrates 100 years of high speed rail in 2064, Australia might finally have HSR along its east coast, but I wouldn't be holding my breath. I won't be around anyhow.
Thank you for doing this comparison! Very informative as usual, and this format was great and I hope you enjoyed doing it in this fashion. I’m team train now for sure.
I always enjoy your travel videos but sometimes get distracted from the scenery whilst reading the sub-titles. Apart from basic information such as ticket prices, station identities etc., which are better as sub-titles, your voice-over information is far more easily absorbed whilst I enjoy the journey. Please keep this Vlog format and your sense of humour.
Love this format! It is great to hear your thoughts. With only a 15 minute difference - train wins! Additionally, trains evoke a more relaxed feeling. A leisurely sight seeing trip as you are transported to your next dedtination. 🚆🚅
I no longer live in UK, so I thoroughly enjoyed this video, through two ghostly deserted cities. I dare say there will be time differences when the crowds reappear, but I do like the train trip, so thank you very much for doing this comparison.
I actually prefer the voice over as opposed the text as it obstructs the film, especially in those more picturesque videos like the amazing video last week. Keep up the good work and I hope you continue the voice over format.
Dylan. I like this. It is good to actually see you and hear you. It makes your videos much more personal. Thanks. This is a great video too. Keep them coming.
Great video, and nice to see there is very little difference in overall time yet the actual experience of train versus plane for me the train wins handsdown. Air travel is a lot quieter at the moment due to pandemic anyway, and you were blessed with no delays on either mode of transport which of course could happen anytime anywhere for any reason. Budget wise, clearly the train wins hands down although if you booked far enough in advance with carriers such as EasyJet you could probably get a closer match on fare prices, likewise train fares can be a lot more expensive too depending on when you book. The new "low cost train service" Lumo has now launched in competition to LNER offering no-fuss fares between London and Edinburgh for around £30 which for me just gives more reason to take the train. I have done this journey in the past on both modes of transport (not in a race situation) and I'm definitely a fan of the train since you just sit down and relax from station to station, you can work, eat, chat, sleep and no hassles with security or having to get to/from airports. Edinburgh is beautiful too!
Thats an interesting race, the ticket prices are shocking for such small distance's travelled, personaly I would take the train, well done Dylan good vblog
Dylan, thank you for this amazing video and congratulations on the VLOG. It has been great to match the voice to the face and add another dimension to your travels. Love all your videos and travel tips. We were lucky enough to visit Edinburgh in 2019 and did the walk up to the castle a few times. Thank you and a big Hello from Brisbane, Australia.
Love the new format. I am a big rail fan and am glad that it was so close. If one takes into account the carbon cost, the train wins hands down - for me, anyway. Long may you continue what you do, I think it's brilliant. Thank you.
I recently made the trip to Edinburgh by train from Coventry did seriously consdier flying but for that length of trip I find train is far easier and far more comfortable, flying maybe marginally quicker but train is much more convienent and you get some lovely views going up through the lake district.
Thanks for taking us on a travel adventure. The sights and sounds. I went on the train Ed-York return a while ago and loved it. If you do more vids it would be great to do the sights along the way and drop ins/wanders through the places. And if you could, run a compressor or something to keep volumes steady and consistent as it gets very loud and quiet randomly
@@grendel_nz that's the problem most of the time they don't stay on the screen long enough to read so I have to stop it and pause it. Just so they use a guy's voice when a guy talks and a female voice and a female talks I'm good with it ☺️
Thanks Dylan. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I think in normal times the train would beat the plane because getting off a well filled A320 usually takes ages. Then, there is the cost which massively favours the train. 😉
He speaks! Hooray! 👏🏻. Really enjoy your videos but adding voiceover really does take things to the next level. Positives: you have a very clear and appealing voice with a fairly neutral accent (but I detect Northern maybe?). Some light touches of humour but without trying to be funny and ending up as cringe. This was great subject matter for audio. Things to consider, the audio levels were very low. Watching on my smart tv I had to have the soundbar volume way up. And that first shot in close up.. wow that was close! 😆. Overall fantastic and a massive step forward. Well done! 👍🏻
Great video, I love watching the train & tube portions. As an American, I am so envious of UK’s train system. A comparable distance in US would be Wash., D.C.- Boston but costs at least 5 times as much on our Amtrak system, and 2x slower.
It worked for me. No trouble with the voice over! Why anyone would bother with the plane for this is a mystery. A lot more money and hassle for a few minutes saved. If you had flown into Heathrow it would make much more sense. Heathrow Express is a rip off. TfL much cheaper I think.
Dylan, I thought this was excellent. The voice over is the best way to go. So more enjoyable to watch. Great quality and presentation. Great humour as well. Thank you. David Barber.
If booked in advance, even by a few days, the train often beats the plane but.... Next day or even same day journeys via cheaper airlines can often be considerably cheaper and worth the extra hassle, however extra costs related to covid may have made that obsolete.
As there is not much difference in duration people should be travelling by train and it is cheaper. Only actual data taken from the airlines and railways could give the correct picture.
Great video. I’ve lived in both Edinburgh and London and had to make trips between the cities for work, and used to wonder which mode of transport would be overall the quickest. Generally I preferred to fly, but I’d pick London City any day over Heathrow. Door to door, to/from City I could make the journey in less than 3 hours. Although flights from City are generally much more expensive.
What I took from this: 1. The amount of time you save by flying rather seems to depend on how soon (or not) you get to the airport (90 mins seems a lot for a domestic flight) 2. Flying seems to be way more expensive, but I once got a flight from Edinburgh to East Midlands on easyjet for just a quid!!!
Jet fuel is free from taxation and airlines don't have to cover any of their externalities (climate damage, pollution, noise). No wonder they can offer their tickets for next to nothing.
Love the voice over format, not that the text only format was bad. You have a quite agreeable tone to your voice. Pretty cool comparison. Picking the starting and ending locations like that makes it a realistic comparison. To me the clear winner was the train. A difference of only 15 minutes in time, yet half the price and hassle and twice the view. (Although, the wait for the plane involved "a few" pints. So it's got that going for it.) Look forward to more videos like this.
I'd rather take the train any day, and on shorter journeys (from a U.S. perspective), the train is cheaper and so much more convenient. Such a great video, Dylan. Thanks!
Really cool video, man. I was wondering about this exact topic myself, as I want to go from Edinburgh down to London with my wife and son. Seems like a cheaper option, more comfortable, scenic, and takes almost the exact same time. Not to mention that for us, it'd have to include luggage (free on the train, god knows how much more for plane), and you'd have to add time for baggage drop and pick up at the end. Thanks again for the video!
Flights into Heathrow usually take longer in my experience due to the time spent circling around London waiting for a landing slot. Maybe not so much of a problem at the moment.
Early morning arrivals into Heathrow will always cause various slot delays . Longest I've had is 35 min coming back from Tokyo going over essex in circles.
I travelled to London in 2012 and was in a holding pattern for 30 minutes as we circled the city. It was one of the most incredible parts of the flight. I literally wore my camera out taking photos of the city.
I loved that idea - train vs plane. I’d love to see you do some for European cities eg, Paris to Milan, or London to Paris (or Nice). I liked the voice over style but I also appreciate the subtitles as sometimes I watch your videos where I need to be quiet & don’t have headphones with me. Keep up the great work! Thanks from Australia
I had this debate with myself a couple of years ago when I was planning a trip to Scotland. Train or plane? I went train in the end after taking into account that time saved by flying would be negligible once you include getting the airport-city centre journey on top. Return flight was £90ish, train was £80ish. Once I'd factored in the environmental impact of flying such a short distance, going by train was the only sensible option. Really enjoyed this style of video, would be happy to see more like this.
Next time, take the Picadilly line straight to Heathrow from various stations across town, so much easier! And a lot cheaper, especially in non-peak time.
@TheRenaissanceman65 are you the guy who always spells "the" and "it" when playing scrabble? Here's a new word for you - perseveration - check it out. Maybe you do better at reading than debating with other people in the world. Oh and by the way, you answered my post, which makes you the troll. DUUURRRRPPPPP!
Hi Dylan, just my observations are it was nicer to see you on the train than by air. You didn't have much room in that airline seat with your knees up against the seat back in front of you. The train looked more comfortable and nice scenery to view and you could walk around if you wanted to, besides your meal. The meal on the aircraft didn't look very tasty! I would choose the train and I believe your fare was less on the train than by air, am I right? I enjoyed your trip Dylan just by watching your trip on RUclips at my home in the United States in the state of Idaho. Thanks for the tour! Travel safely!
I loved this, both the race idea and way you presented the video. The voiceover style and your personal appearances are so much nicer than using just a script on the screen ( and your occasional appearance in a random mirror!). I notice from the other comments that everyone wants you to keep doing this! So please do. As for the race: I think the flight would have lost quite definitely if (1) you had had checked baggage to drop off and then retrieve on arrival and (2) Heathrow had been operating at pre pandemic crowd levels with the usual lengthy security process.
Great video, Dylan. I loved it! Remember for viewers who still prefer to read the text there is the subtitles/close caption option on this video too. So, this works out for all really. However, it's what format you enjoy making and editing that will be the most important as your channel grows and grows. Keep up the great work. I thought the plane was going to win (yes, even with the long wait and security) due to the ease of connections with the Heathrow express and Edinburgh tram. I think I'll be taking the train next time.
I really like the new narrative format! It frees me from having to read the captions while trying to take in the visuals at the same time. I think that you do a great job with your channel and the voiceover just adds another level of enjoyment. Thanks...
God I love Azuma's livery and the Class 801. Both look SO snazzy! And clearly to me, the train is BY FAR the better option here if you ever had to pick between the two. And lack of leg room is absolutely a catalyst in play there too in favor of the train. Super surprised but pleased to see just how akin the train's time is to the plane's. That's a very good sign for the train, and hopefully is able to encourage more people to opt for it instead of the plane. Edit: Also, $9 for a 8.7 mile long Streetcar line?! That's pure robbery! Somebody shoot me!
I won't lie - I prefer the old format more - I find it more relaxing. Then again there could be videos like this every other upload or maybe once C-virus retreats then 2 videos a week? :)
That is interesting that you say that. I felt the exact same way when I watched this video. I did thoroughly enjoy this new format, but I admit I did feel “less relaxed“ than I do when watching the other videos. I am not sure why. Maybe I like reading what he’s saying… Not sure.
I can’t comment on your old style (because this is the first time the oh wise algorithm suggested you to me!), but I really enjoyed this video! I often watch these type of videos while working and not having to read the screen all the time was fantastic! I hope you keep it up and I look forward to watching more!
I’ve really enjoyed all your trips, but this one is tops. Keep the voice-over. It works really well, and you sound great. I wish America had more train travel opportunities. Thanks for promoting movement via rail! Cheers!
18:20 Dylan: These trains were made in 1972 and will run for another 10 years!! Me, from Buenos Aires, where we had the world's oldest rolling stock still in service (The A metro line had the same stock since its opening in 1913 until 2013) and we still have trains dating back to the early 60s in regular service: Wow, those are still brand new!
No. They were not made in 1972. Even the HST, it's predecessor wasn't around then. 1976 was the launch of the HST on the Western region. The East coast route got them a couple of years later. They were replaced a couple of years ago. But class 91's with mk 4 coaches were also intruduced on that routed in the 90's and they have also gone. The Azumas are the same sort of train as the replacements on the Western region. Now nicknamed flying cucumbers due to their colour. The class 800/802's are designed to run up to 140mph. But our track still won't allow that due mostly to signals needing updating. Sadly I will never be able to travel on them. The seats are really bad for anyone with a disability like I have. So it's the plane for me
I suppose he was trying to choose two iconic places within both cities. I'd say, outside of politics, the Houses of Parliament are more on par with Edinburgh Castle than the Scottish Parliament.
The plane can often be delayed - also there was hardly anyone around cos Covid. Surprised you went to LHR - LCY would have been quicker perhaps? The train is a better bet and way more relaxing in my opinion.
Fantastic video. Your voice tone is friendly and engaging. You talk just about the right amount. And this train Vs plane video was thoroughly enjoyable and also gave us a nice ride through London and also between the two cities. Keep up the good work!
Dear Dylan. I know this video dates a few moenths ago, but I just only saw it yesterday. What a fantactic experience!!!! I realize that we are quite alike in many ways. I am much older than you and today it would be impossible for me to make that experience of comparing the time if you travel by train or plane. And it proves what I have always said. If the distance is not too long beter use the train. Thanks again for this wonderful video which also makes me see places I have seen in my life. Wille Grant, from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It is less stressful than going all the way on the tube etc. If you HATE having to go thru dirty noisy overcrowded London at all, then HXX is a little bit of calm w easy luggage store.
Got off the tram a bit too early in Edinburgh meaning a longer walk. Going up The Mound and up Ramsay Lane rather than around the back of the castle would have improved the win for the flight.
Train may be faster soon, Werrington Junction upgrade is set to shave 21 minutes of the fastest London-Edinburgh service and LNER will be introducing an even faster London-Edinburgh service. And also don't forget about HS2.
Thank god for this! A very useful vlog and a godsend! It has all the answers I needed! Surprised how the plane journey was not much quicker than the train! Love the detailed coverage of the route. Hope to see more!

Whichever way you do it is just fine. 😀
And the environmental benefits?

@@adjo82 'i dont have to turn up early to fly, what are you on about? except the turning up 50 minutes before'...so you have to turn up atleast 50 minutes early? lol
That is really interesting. I was expecting the plane to be a lot quicker, but like you say Dylan, the faff slows it down and it's pretty clear that the train is the better option all round. Yay for the train!!!
I definitely prefer this new format , I hope this becomes the norm .
Isn't getting a plane to Edinburgh cheaper a lot of the time?
I've usually found the plane is cheaper than train and city airport is often better for Edinburgh
A few minutes late in japan: "IM LATE FOR WORK!!!!!"
A few minutes late in britain: "Nice"
A few minutes late in america: "Wow thats very fast."
Hahaha, pure facts man. A late arrival/departure will get you fired or suspended without pay for at least a month in Japan, a possible warning/talking to in the UK if it happens often enough, and nothing at all in the US.
@@trippinoutdoors Japan's work culture is flattening honestly. Seems too extreme.
The fit the USA airlines would have if you fined them for being late!
I liked this format. The plane trip cost over twice as much too. Wish we had the choice of taking a train to more cities in the US.
Glad you liked it!

Oh, I'd love to go to Oktoberfest 🍻
It is fun flying on the Autobahn, but it is stressful (if you are doing it right). You have to keep an eye on the horizon, cause if a truck going 80kph enters a passing area 1/2mi ahead and pulls out, you have to hit the brakes NOW. Plus at those speeds a Mercedes is probably only getting 10mpg (at $8/gal).
That sounds amazing! Yeah Team Train!
Didn't get lost.
Still not lost
And cheaper. All the benefits - zero drawbacks

Nice to put a voice to the face Dylan, good stuff bud, look forward to more content 👍

If you're flying long-haul from somewhere else in the UK, with BA at least, it's far more convenient to take a connecting flight, and it usually doesn't add much to the price. Sometimes it's cheaper.

Very interesting Dylan. Cost factor though was an amazing difference. Well done.

What I took from this:
1. The amount of time you save by flying rather seems to depend on how soon (or not) you get to the airport (90 mins seems a lot for a domestic flight)
I thought that for a train journey of that length, as well as taking a window seat you would also have a seat with a table I know I would prefer to.
@@airzulu2733 I actually quite enjoy doing the circle a few times.
Good video Dylan, and I liked the voice over, much better the the sub titles, keep it up. Train by far the best, where ever you go.
PS, take a picnic since the ride is about 14 hours long lol
@TheRenaissanceman65 Haha no sour cream on your sarnies, you're sour enough lol
@TheRenaissanceman65 haha you trigger tool, why you wasting time answering me then, durp.
@TheRenaissanceman65 haha you must be that guy stuck on the circle line for months, coz you're repeating yourself now. Durp.
Great job - appreciate having my suspicion confirmed that the train is around the same time with far less hassle, especially if luggage is involved.
Do Bristol to Edinburgh next time, that would be more challenging!
Easyjet beats Cross Country!
I'd like to see the emissions of a modern A320 Neo compared to a voyager.
£118.40 on the train. 6hrs 19mins direct. That’s not bad is it?
Great video, Dylan. I loved it! Remember for viewers who still prefer to read the text there is the subtitles/close caption option on this video too. So, this works out for all really. However, it's what format you enjoy making and editing that will be the most important as your channel grows and grows. Keep up the great work. I thought the plane was going to win (yes, even with the long wait and security) due to the ease of connections with the Heathrow express and Edinburgh tram. I think I'll be taking the train next time.
£25 for a 20 minute ride hardly value for money, I always used the tube when using Heathrow found it handy and economical enough
I really like the new narrative format! It frees me from having to read the captions while trying to take in the visuals at the same time. I think that you do a great job with your channel and the voiceover just adds another level of enjoyment. Thanks...
OK, you've convinced me! Saving nearly £15, it's got to be train every time...even though it takes a few minutes longer. Less faff.
Great video!
Have done the journey between London and Glasgow 100s of times and it is infinitely better by rail too, and far less faff.
So it's the plane for me
Andrew, he is talking about the Bakerloo Line trains
If you want even older trains then i think it's the Isle of Wright that had old 1930's stock running. Only recently they have been replaced.
Odd, why didn’t you start from the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh seeing you went to Westminster?
I suppose he was trying to choose two iconic places within both cities. I'd say, outside of politics, the Houses of Parliament are more on par with Edinburgh Castle than the Scottish Parliament.
@@2ndplace1 Yeah, the Scottish Parliament isn't even on a par with my local chippy.
Makes sense to take the train... not just for the cost and hassle, but also the CO2 emissions
Certainly
Exactly. Theoretically the train plus tube could be zero carbon at some stage, whereas I doubt that the plane will be electric in my lifetime.
@@nicholasbrown6697 Cantanery wires always will win over batteries.
Can't run out of charge when your constantly on charge. And it's easier to convert existing stock to run as electrics from diesel.
Heathrow Express- the UK's number 1 train operator- when viewed in revenue per mile
Heathrow Express. The UKs least used rail line.
It is less stressful than going all the way on the tube etc. If you HATE having to go thru dirty noisy overcrowded London at all, then HXX is a little bit of calm w easy luggage store.
@@grendel_nz And that train fare is more than I pay to fly right across Europe.
Got off the tram a bit too early in Edinburgh meaning a longer walk. Going up The Mound and up Ramsay Lane rather than around the back of the castle would have improved the win for the flight.
Was thinking the same.
Equally, he didn't need to leave the castle until just after 07:15 so the train would have been over 15 minutes faster than the actual time taken.
Very entertaining topic. I far prefer the voice-over - it feels far more alive and attention holding. Thanks and congratulations; job well done!
Really enjoyed the LNER! The plane may be faster, but the views from the train are wonderful! 🌺
100% would take longer by plane in “normal” circumstances
I would’ve thought it’d be quicker to take the flight from London City airport rather than from Heathrow…
BA flights only to Glasgow, not Edinburgh
@@dennann5101 looks to me like average of 2 flights daily LCY-EDI at the moment, check BA8700 for just one of the flight numbers.
Quicker but even more pricey I believe
Train may be faster soon, Werrington Junction upgrade is set to shave 21 minutes of the fastest London-Edinburgh service and LNER will be introducing an even faster London-Edinburgh service. And also don't forget about HS2.
Thank god for this! A very useful vlog and a godsend! It has all the answers I needed! Surprised how the plane journey was not much quicker than the train! Love the detailed coverage of the route. Hope to see more!
I have watched this episode a few times and this is so informing and surprising. Great show.
