Standard Class on Cross Country is laid out in a 2-2 configuration. If (you have more sense than me and) choose to travel in first class, you can expect a 2-1 configuration.
When I booked my ticket for this trip, the cross country website wouldn't sell me the ticket for some reason so I had to book it through the trainline. Also, if you intend on taking this trip, be sure to book the train that displays 0 changes because when I tried to book this trip, both cross country and the trainline seemed very keen to sell me a ticket for a journey that was about an hour shorter but also involved 2 changes! This confused me a bit as both this journey and the journey that they were trying to sell me departed Aberdeen at 08:20.
Also, I would strongly recommend that you reserve a seat as this train can get very busy for quite a large portion of the trip (particularly between Dundee and Leeds!)
Hearing the accents change as you headed across the country was really interesting to listen to.
The Doric dialect in Aberdeen is beautiful.

How I miss train journeys. I used to get the 8 hours train from Inverness to London to go visit my then boyfriend and absolutely loved every bit of it. Made a few friends on the train too. Now, I can't travel on the train as I get panic attacks and anxiety being on it. Something to do with me being claustrophobic. It never used to be a problem for me, but in 2012 I started experiencing full blown panic attacks on trains and I've been scared to go on one. Trains use to be my number 1 mode of transport. Loved watching this video, brings back so much memories. Thanks for sharing.

Feyi, sorry to hear you have anxiety on trains. But don't let that stop you. Get in contact with The Speakman's, a husband and wife couple, I think they are from Manchester/Cheshire area. They are a legendary couple who help people overcome things like this. They have been on lots of the daytime chat shows showing and discussing their work. I'm sure they could help you overcome your anxiety and get back out there and enjoy the train journeys. Much love.

I take them as soon as I get on the train and within 5-10mins I'm relaxed and relaxed enough to fall asleep most times.

I pretty much disagree because I like the cross country, due to covid you won’t find my much passengers, plus it takes you on nearly the whole island Scotland and Britain.
Those are the old Virgin trains from 15-18 years ago. This is the best available.
Class 22x trains are horrid things in general. We have the misfortune of having them on the Midland Mainline, too.
I would definitely NOT want to do 13 hours in a Class 22x train!

I've done Aberdeen to Manchester, which was made all the better chatting to the guys coming from the oil rigs!!
This trip should be done is first class for the whole journey
Unless you are only interested in comfort and beautiful countryside but you miss out something essential: mixing with the local crowds, their socialisation, local dialects, change in mentalities etc. I consider children crying a part of this experience.
First Class is far better. last time we travelled in "Standard Class" on Cross County we vowed we would never do it again. A gang of lager louts got on the train and were drinking in the aisles, we had to move to another carriage to escape them. On the return journey we upgraded to First Class and it was paradise compared to "Standard".

You can perceive it as such, but it's just a fucking train ride where you don't actually give a shit about mixing with the local crowds, nor try to understand their dialects, or examine their mentalities, whatever that means. You also want to throttle any child whining or shrieking or invading your personal space. Nor would you want to sit next to you, blessed be God.
A friend used to do the reverse journey in the 1980s from Penzance to uni at Durham, 9 hours, 24 stops. He took the printed window sheet from the carriage with the names of all the stops and had it on his college room wall. Happy memory. Nice job !!!

I still remember my longest train journey. I went from Eastbourne to Penrith, Cumbria so I could see where part of the film Withnail and I was filmed. I went into the tourist information office only to be told that it wasn’t actually filmed there! Enjoyed the journey though.

I wonder will this make you feel a little homesick, I was a trainspotter back in the 50s &60s and loved going round St Margarets and Haymarket sheds, I don't know if they are still there but then in the 60s living in Manchester I used to love the weekend visits to Glasgow and Edinburgh, as an aside to this I bet you remember well `Greyfriars Bobby` near Cowgatehead.

As someone who lives in Exeter...thanks for the comments about the scenary, I'm often taking the train down to Newton Abbot if not beyond and I have to remember not to take it for granted! Dawlish sea wall got taken out by a wave circa 2014!

Well, it's not, actually.
There are parts of it - especially where the taxis park is bad. And that's because that part goes right under the other shopping center and that passage is over 160 years old.
There are plans to replace that part. Although to replace it they would have to rebuild the road above it and somehow support all the buildings that are 200-300 years old that lay on the road.
So some concessions need to be given.
The actual train station and shopping mall is nice.
Especially compared to shopping malls in Dundee, Glasgow etc.
I used to live there in 1989/90 as an assistant teacher. I still have warm feelings with this place. It must have changed a lot in the meantime.
Union Square's ok as long as you're willing to pay top whack for anything.

That train needs a buffet car. Although the Inlander is worse 21 hours and no buffet or trolley service at all just very basic snacks and drinks. Stock up before boarding

I did this train journey from Aberdeen Scotland to Penzance Cornwall England last year on 25 June 2019 and it's was great journey it's big achievement you done and I enjoyed watching your video and been back memories of my trip and Well done filming it

Longest journey I've done on one train was Ely to Liverpool on an EMT 158 back in 2010; loved the variety of cities and scenery in between on that ride, comfy trains too! Try a full Liverpool to Norwich run after lockdown on that service before it gets split!
That is one hell of a journey and as I use Cross Country fairly often I would dread the thought of doing that journey in one hit....

Loving your work...not been on a proper journey for a while...these show me what I miss. Got a run to Glasgow from ABZ and I'm going to do a run to York in the next month-6weeks or so. NEED to do a sleeper again soon...just want everything to be open...can't be doing with the reduced lounges/bar etc. Keep it up though...nice back catalogue.
Enjoyed that . The exeter towards dawlish is a beautiful part of the journey . The best coastal train trip ive done is actually Osaka to Nagasaki and if any of you get the chance to do a trip to Japan by train this is possibly the best in my personal view . But iam sure there are many beautiful coastal train trips all over the world .

It's only about one and a half hour train journey for me from where I live to Dawlish. I wouldn't wanna do Aberdeen to Penzance! I'm not sure my legs would work after sitting down that long.

Really enjoy your posts. I have travelled many trains when it was possible for children to travel for a £1 when using a family railcard! Took many foster children all over the country! I encouraged them to "pick a direction and literally stick a pin in the map"!
Stayed in many "unusual" b and bs, on interesting campsites etc!

Like ALL your work. As a Brit living in Austria. I travelled by plane (quite a lot) back to the UK to see family and friends. But I got bored with it. Like getting on a bus to go to work everyday. Then I thought TRAINS?..... So from now on its going to be train journeys. Be it to "The island" or around Europe. So keep up the EXCELLENT work. Cos I'll be watching for ideas.😎

It's an insane journey that has to be done. I did this in June, on advanced first class ticket. I fully exploited the complimentary coffees, biscuits, cakes, and bacon rolls.
Yeah! That's my strategy when traveling in 1st class too 😀

Your persistance is amazing. The longest I've SAT on a train is 7hr from Wuhan to Chongqin. Anything longer than that is sleeper journey.

come to australia. Longest I've done is 14 hours. And I've done that a few times. Just this year I've done a 10 hour and a 7 hour.

I've done a few long trips on Brit Rail with breaks for overnighting. The longest journey with no break was my excursion from London to Aberdeen on the sleeper service. Nice ride, and nice bed. London to Newcastle all at night, but the scenery from Newcastle to Aberdeen was outstanding.
This video is absolutely excellent from start to finish with all the necessary parts included. It is just a shame that the train does not have an extra couple of extra carriages and a buffet car serving hot and cold dishes/snacks and drinks.

Well you can almost go the whole way by train. It's 16.5 miles between John o Groats and Wick. There is a bus service. Then there are trains from Wick to Inverness ( 4.5 hours ) and Inverness to Aberdeen ( 2.2 hours ). You would then have to overnight in Aberdeen. Then next day, this train to Penzance. It's 9.5 miles to Lands End. Not sure there's s bus goes the whole way but you could at least get to some village and take s taxi the last couple of miles. Good luck!

It’s crazy how much noise you block out when you’re on a train yourself. I enjoyed this video but couldn’t help but wonder how I ever coped listening to other passengers talk lol. Also props for you to do this on your own, I certainly couldn’t.

Thanks for posting your endurance test on a 5 car voyager. I endured one in first class from Haymarket to York around two years ago and that was long enough for me. One for us Aussies is the XPT (Aussie version of a HST) from Brisbane to Sydney, which, due to COVID 19 , we can't do completely at present, but I'm sure it's more comfortable than a Voyager. Now, I'll look at your Highland Chieftain journey for comparison. I've travelled both first and economy in HSTs. Oh! and I haven't viewed it yet, but I agree with your "Ironboard Seats' comment on the Thameslink Class 700s. Fortunately I endured one of these only once - from Three Bridges to Gatwick Airport on the morning I left the UK to come back home downunder.
I'm really interested to try out the XPT at some point. British locomotive with what I believe are Budd passenger cars sounds an interesting combo.
@@DylansTravelReports The XPT cars were initially built by Commonwealth Engineering (Comeng) at their Auburn, Sydney works. Later builds were done at Alstom -A.B.B.Works in South Dandenong, Melbourne. The site of the later builds became part of Bombardier and now look like reverting to Alstom in the recently reported takeover.
Watching this video made me want to sing ‘Panic’ by The Smiths, as it lists a hell of a lot of cities and towns this train passes through!!

Wow, Penzance really is out there at the south west end of the UK! Enjoyed watching the video. I was wondering if the train was Diesel? There were sounds that sounded like a Diesel at the start of the trip, although on Amtrak long distance trains which are all Diesel you don't hear the Diesel inside the train.
Thanks! Yes, this is a diesel train. The reason you hear the engines on this train is because the engines are built into each coach as opposed to just having a locomotive at the front.
See other people's comments regarding Class 221 Super Voyagers. Thse are diesel multiple units, and are wholly inadequate for this length of journey.

The trip out of Aberdeen is always very nice. I’m lucky enough to see it when I get the train to/from Uni.
The title is a misnomer. It is one of the shortest trains on the longest journey!
The scenery was very impressive even to this California native. The ppl on the train seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. I even enjoyed the occasional brief reflection of the fire extinguisher popping in!
Every year I go from chesterfield to Plymouth and back that’s really fun

@@DylansTravelReports Sorry to put a downer on it, but First Class on those Vomiters is little better than Standard. Table space is generous only at the 4-seat bays, the on-board food and drink offering is dreadful (not even a free newspaper), legroom/ recline still not generous, headroom is just as bad (these trains were designed to tilt so have narrow roofs)...and of course you still get the same engine rattle and roar, and smelly toilets.
You might still bang your head in first class 'cos luggage rack is at the same height above the seat. The coach body profile is designed for tilting (even though CrossCountry has never used tilt) hence the narrow headroom.
Just like British Rail's HST's, Arriva XC's four-car Class 220 Voyagers are powered by Diesel engines with electric traction motors. So it really would make good sense to build an extra (fifth) carriage with a roof-mounted Pantograph (to enable power to be drawn down from the 25kV Overhead Line Equipment) and a Transformer (to step down the Voltage to levels appropriate for the motors) which would have the added benefit of relieving the overcrowding which has become both chronic and acute throughout the Cross Country network. After all, this Voyages was running "under the wires" all the way from Edinburgh to York, which is a terrible waste of Diesel fuel.

Turning that train into a hybrid - Hitachi has already introduced/created a diesel/electric hybrid train that in operation - burns diesel 😷/electric from over-head pantograph/3rd rail pickup shoe ⚡️🌿. More likely, those Voyagers will be scrapped and replaced with the aforementioned Hitachi hybrid/converted to hydrogen-fuel-cell [when it becomes more viable]
The best thing to do would be to just get new bi-mode trains (that are longer too) and just scrap the Voyagers - they are completely unfit for purpose on long distance journeys.
The only thing Voyagers would be good for are replacing 1 or 2 coach trains on rural routes.

Believe me, that type of train is one of the most hated in the UK! Fine for a couple of hours but most people wouldn't want to be on it much longer.

You did well to put up with the constant yattering of those at the adjacent tables. On my last lengthy train journey, a nearby conversation about balsamic paper tissues lasted for a good 20 minutes... 😂

Yes it's probably due to my mic on my camera being quite good at picking up audio. On the one hand that can be a good thing but sometimes it picks up more than it should.

You’ve got some patience doing this journey on those trains - I’ve done the London kings cross to Newcastle run and back a few times in those seats, and I was dying to get off by the end , let alone spend hours like you did . I love trains but the lack of legroom and the loud carriages on this route really make for an uncomfortable journey . They do quiet zones which has been better though . I’d love to do this journey but the trains themselves put me right off .
Yeah they're not the best trains! My main reason for doing this was as a sort of practice for when I went to the USA and spent 3 days in Amtrak's coach seats! That's a whole other level of testing one's patience (not that I'm complaining because it was a fantastic experience!)
Great video , much enjoyed ... I cannot stand travelling on these trains and I only go from Cheltenham to York ... You paid £81 for this journey , that's pretty good considering I pay 63 minimum regardless of when I book going from Cheltenham to Middlesbrough

It's interesting the way they've "bolted" the Union Square shopping centre onto the side of Aberdeen Station. Having been there before and after, but NOT during construction, it was a bit of a shock the first time I saw it.

Just found out that 08:20 from Aberdeen no longer runs through to Penzance. It terminates in Plymouth at 19:45, a journey time of 11h 25mins.
However, there is a through return service, departing Plymouth at 09:27, and arriving into Aberdeen at 20:44, a journey time of 11h 17mins.
@@kevinrussell2718 Yes I noticed that it no longer went through to Penzance when I looked at seeing how much the journey would cost. I wondered if that change was just a temporary measure during COVID and would eventually go back to finishing in Penzance or if finishing in Plymouth is now a permanent change?
@@miketrueman5473 I suspect that it's a permanent thing now, on account of the return journey running through to Aberdeen (which it didn't before).
@@kevinrussell2718 I think you’re probably right. It’s a real shame though because now you miss out on going over the River Tamar on The Royal Albert Bridge which I reckon would of been one of the highlights of the whole journey.
@@miketrueman5473 There's always the "Night Riveria" - by the time that gets to the Tamar Bridge from the Big Smoke, it'll be light enough in the day to savour the crossing.

I used to travel from Kings Cross to Arbroath in my army days. Now it's just a 6 hour journey, not bad for 500 miles.

Interesting fact;
The bridge takes so long to paint that it is always being painted.
By time they get from end to end they have to start again.
Wow, nobody knows that well known fact.
And it's not actually true anymore.
Paint was blasted off to the steel and repainted 3 times with a special paint between 2002-2011 that lasts for 25 years. Won't need painted again till 2036. Although it has started peeling in 9 years 😕
I've done this twice now, both in first class. My most recent trip on this service was on Summer Solstice so I got to enjoy daylight for the entire journey too.
If I were to do ot again, I'd almost definatly cough up the extra money for first class!
@@DylansTravelReports - It's a shame that you ended up in a cramped airline-style seat. rather than in one of the few window seats which are arranged in bays of four around a proper table. Arriva Cross-Country's "Voyager" trains travel very long distances so the seat pitch and width should be generous with a large number of bays of four seats arranged around a table. In Standard accommodation the opposite is the case - and XC's fares are by no means cheap either!

Hi my name is Phil I did 50yrs on the foot I started on the footplate in1961 at edgeley shed as a fireman I finished my time out at 9A and I worked this train a number of times from new St to Preston. Regard Phil.

Got the equivalent of this train back in BR days between (I only travelled between Edinburgh and Weston-Super-Mare) but it had a different routing then and fewer stops. If I recall correctly, it proceeded the same as this one between Aberdeen and Edinburgh but missed the stops at Ladybank and Markinch. From Edinburgh, instead of heading towards Dunbar & Berwick, the train reversed and headed for Carstairs on the West Coast mainline where there was another reversal and our train joined a portion from Glasgow Central loco change as well from a Class 47 to a Class 86. Journey continued calling at Carlisle, Oxenholme, Preston, Wigan North Western, Warrington Bank Quay, Crewe, Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Dudley and Birmingham New Street. Another reversal and loco change to a Class 50 at New Street was followed by stops at Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Parkway, Bristol Temple Meads before I alighted at Weston SM. I'm a bit patchy on the rest of the stops but apart from diverting onto the Weston loop, the routing was the same as in this video, but with fewer stops in Devon and Cornwall.
Rolling stock was BR MKIID, in my opinion the later MKII coaches (D,E & F) were the most comfortable way to travel, no cramped airline style seating.
I would have thought at least 1 more stop in Devon - typically Exeter, Newton Abbot, Totnes and Plymouth. Unlike to be just Exeter and Plymouth - there were not that many through trains at Newton Abbot and it is a stop of point for the Riviera.

The legroom was a bit stingy,I prefer the grand Central trains, you get about another foot of space.
