- A night aboard the famous Milan to Palermo Sleeper. The train departs Milan in the evening and arrives in Palermo in time for tea the next day. The journey even involves the train being loaded onto a ferry in order to cross the straight of Messina.

It sounds worst if you think that Dylan gets up in southern Italy where Libero was provided. Libero often has racists articles about southern Italy (Libero's perfect ideal is a white heterosexual northenitalian man)

I was on this train in 1973, and had no idea that it was put on a ferry. I woke up during the night, looked out the window, and saw that we weren't moving. I asked another passenger what was going on, and he said that we were on a boat - WTF!

Glad to hear they have put a stop to cabin sharing with strangers in overnight trains. I hope this becomes the new norm.
You could always buy a cabin all for yourself, it was just gonna cost you more. At the moment they are only allowing one passenger cabins because of the pandemic, and since you are forced to buy the whole thing they are keeping the prices very low. Honestly i never found any major problem in travelling with strangers, given the typical price. You just got what you paid for.
Sharing cabins with strangers is the norm in Russia and most ex Soviet states

Well done Dylan. I was blessed to be stationed in Vicenza as a US Army engineer for several short tours and got to travel a lot on their trains. I did the sleeper train out of Milano to Heidelburg and found it to be a great experience plus I enjoyed the Minestrone soup at the Milano station. I have a friend stationed at Sigonella NAS near Catania and he tells me the island it quite beautiful never knowing you could take a train there. Well done for teaching me that as well. Keep up the good work young man and God bless.

That brings back childhood memories. My parents come from Sicily. As a child we drove this route a lot.
This video is one of my Dylan favorites. What a concept-splitting up and loading an entire train onto a ferry, then reconnecting the train components and carrying on with the remainder of the overland trip. It’s a pity there was no dining service. Knowing that in advance, passengers could take advantage of the food offerings in that fabulous Milano station, packing up all kinds of goodies for the 20 hours on the train. The scenery was wonderful. As for the room needing repairs/refurbishment, that was true. But the price helped compensate for the flaws. Thank you so much for this video. Someday I hope to experience this trip, too. 🌼

Hahahahaha amazing , literally a train on a boat! It was so weird being on the island but still on the train! Milan Station is inconceivably epic! Like a cartoon version of an epic station that couldn't possibly exist in reality. Great vid thanks!
Memories of the Night Ferry that used to run from Victoria to Paris.
The sight of Sciily from mainland Italy makes so many people wonder why they don't build a bridge. It turns out that the Strait of Messina is very deep, around 500 feet. They were going to build the world's longest suspension bridge but the project was cancelled.
Same reason why we can't build a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Irish sea is too deep
There's been talk of a floating tunnel, but since that's pretty new technology I doubt it will be built soon. Maybe it'll be finished by the 2030's.
The strait of Messina is 820ft (250m) deep at its deepest point, which is much shallower than water bodies that have bridges over them. Also the Italian government is already building the Messina Bridge which will enable cars and trains to move from mainland to Sicily and vice versa. Some 3.3 km long and 60 m wide, the bridge would be supported by two 382 m pillars, each higher than the Empire State Building, and accommodate six freeway lanes, a railway (for up to 200 trains a day), and two walkways. @@scottlarson1548 They started it again and cancelled it in 2013 as well, but it still doesn't mean it's impossible due to the depth, it's only not economically viable according to the government.
I never realised how close to the mainland Sicily really was, it's literally spitting distance. What a beautiful country Italy is and the view across the Messina straight is truly beautiful.

"A pleasant place to wait ...". I used to stay in a hotel next door to the station - now sadly fallen into less sympathetic hands - and the are was distinctly unpleasant and rather threatening after dark. You can easily find discarded syringes and the amount of graffiti is legendary. Even Red Berets (modelled on the New York group of similar name) staying in their cabin.
The "some sort of cloth" is probably a bath towel. Traditionally, Italian bath towels are not particularly thick.
One of those islands visible from the Palermo line is called Vulcano, which gives us the name for such things.
No irritating music. Big plus.
That Milan station is very impressive to look at, even the inside where the platforms are is pretty cool, especially the roof.

50 years ago when I was 10 we used to get a train from London to Palermo and sometimes we had to sit in corridors because trains were packed before planes flew constantly like now, thank you for bringing back fantastic memories I had a tear in my eye ,brilliant video ,I might just do trip again once again thanks
Can't cease admiring Milano Centrale, is absolutely Astonish..! This is quite a Fantastic journey, I made it from Rome to Palermo in a Bus in 1995, there is a "Traghetto" (Ferry) for buses and cars too, but obviously a Ferry for the train is something else..!! We saw all the operation of splitting the train to be "swallowed" by the Ferry, while waiting our turn to get into our Ferry, is just amazing..!! Thanks for the ride, this is one of the most exciting railroad trips..!
I first made this very journey in the 1990's and this video brought back some really happy memories. I'm sure you too will look back one day Dylan and also appreciate all of this travel.

When you mentioned Salerno I couldn't look at that countryside the same way again.

Fascinating. I have added this to my future travel queue which grows longer and longer as I watch RUclips and am yet unable to travel to Europe from the USA.
I was born in Sicily, currently I'm living in Bologna and I do the trip Bologna/Messina by train about 3/4 times a year. I didn't think that someone in the world could find much interest in this train going on a ferry to cross the sea (the stretto di Messina), probably because I've always done that and it is just normal for me!

I've used these trains several times over the last 40 years and it always amazes me that you get videos on RUclips as if it were a new discovery!

@@bobswan6196 Well we didn't have Internet then , we just went out exploring using our brains and our wits, and asking people questions on the way. Fifteen years ago I cycled 7,000 kms through Mexico and Central America with no phone or Internet, just using a paper map. A lot of people nowadays simply couldn't do that!

I agree. I think it's down to the fact that most Intercity Notte routes are only about 12 hours long but still.

A comment in Italian indicates food scarcity is a function of virus-related problems getting the advance preparation done, so hoped temporary.

We are in Italy man!! Nobody wants to buy the train food because it cost too much and the quality is terrible! Take food with you from home!!

1:00 - Yeah, seeing that architecture offers me vibes of Washington D.C.'s Union Station mixed with a small hint of Los Angeles's Union Station.
The terminal with all the restrictions reminds me of the opening bit from Half Life 2, when you arrive in City 17.

My wife, daughter and I stayed there in August 2019 when we arrived from Rome and stayed in an apartment very close to the station. Your video is excellent and gives a great view of the train, the places and sceneries you saw. The logistics of transporting the train on a ferry is very interesting and I loved what I saw. I really like your assessments about the trains themselves and what's on them, these informations are very useful for planning a good trip, without any setbacks; your friend Nonstop Eurotrip also gives great reviews and I like the work of both of you. An Epic! This was really great. I agree the lack of food is absurd for first class. They could learn from the Czechs. On your recent post they were offering a great menu and that was for a trip from Graz to Vienna.

I think the emphasis on this trip is the comfort of the sleeping accommodation. Don’t expect anything else. I can’t imagine traveling in the compartment with two other people. It was tiny just for one. Probably in normal conditions a dinette car would be a fantastic idea, but in these days of the pandemic, and Italy just recently recovering somewhat, only the bare minimum services appear to be normal at this time. Beautiful scenery make it well worth the trip. Just bring your own food, as you said.

I think it was because of covid, when I took a train from Milan to Naples or Milan to Florence, there was food but it was before covid

That is truly a beautiful train station. In a world where precautions to prevent injuries/accidents are often taken to the extreme and absurd, it seems odd to see an unstoppable mass of steel backing into a station while people push their trolleys along side with no guard rail or barrier. Nice to know that in the world of train travel, passengers are trusted to take care without a nanny to scold them. A train on a boat!! How unique!!!! Southern Italy is beautiful and the sea is so blue!! I want to go!! Thanks for the experience!

Very nice report! I did the same trip 20 years ago (but not in a deluxe cabin). Things are not changed a lot. In Italy, trains are often considered means of transport "for poors". I hope we will improve them in the next years. Thank you for sharing this unique trip!

Thanks for a fascinating video. I didn't know about this route. I remember, as a boy being fascinated by the sight of the London to Paris express train (The Golden Arrow) being loaded onto a ferry at Dover. Sadly I didn't have the opportunity to travel on it but often saw the train at London Victoria station and was thrilled by the idea of it going all the way to Paris! This was, of course long before the channel tunnel.

Before you wrote it in the video, I said to myself “This looks like Washington DC’s Union Station”! This is gorgeous.
Trains going on ferries is a great experience, did it travelling from Hamburg to Copenhagen a couple of years ago, although sadly that route is ending, if not already ended so hopefully this will keep going until I can get the chance to travel it.
It's gone. So has the Trelleborg to Mukran train ferry that used to convey the overnight Malmo-Berlin Express.
This one will always be working, there have been plenty of attempts to build a bridge over Messina Strait but it’s just impossible.
@@johnstansfield5265 Mukran former Sassnitz ex DDR, traveling with "Berlinaren" several times during DDR-time, living in Sweden, also traveling with "Alfred Nobel" several times. Stockholm-Hamburg.

Great video - thanks again! The Milano station architecture, the very blue sea, the mountains, and the ferry operation made for a nice variety. Italy is a long country, but I never imagined a train taking 20:45. Hopefully enough passengers will choose an overnight train over a plane ride to maintain the service. I think passenger trains rode ferries across the San Francisco Bay in California many decades back.

Excellent video, as always, Dylan! I have made the journey from Rome to Sicily several times on the day train, but never overnight. You were very unlucky to be in a carriage with such bad wheelflats.....I would have had great difficulty in sleeping with that racket going on all night! That looks very much like Vesuvius at about 16:00.....so you didn't miss it after all! Unfortunately Trenitalia withdrew catering vehicles from all but daytime high speed services nearly ten years ago, but if you travel on their Thello overnight service between Paris, Milano and Venice (when it restarts after Covid), you can enjoy both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant car.
