Can you tell me the model # and size of the snow thrower also the length of the drive shaft. I an trying to adapt a 46" blower off a 420. Also the actrator for the thrower lift isn't responding, any thoughts, I appreciate your videos', Thanks so much.
Knowledge share. For the outside wheel weights, get a longer bolt, cut the head off to make a stud, turn wheel locate with the stud at the top position, hang weight, start bottom bolt, roll wheel 180 degrees, remove stud, put in second bolt, tighten and you are good to go and will still have most of your fingers.
Boy buddy your life gonna be a whole lot easier with that John Deere than that old ford you used to use in winter..i love mine and couldn’t live without it .. the 3 and 400 series JD were like the sub compacts of the 80’s and just as capable as like the 1023 and 1025 of today ,, it just may take a little bit longer to do the task ,,bit they can do anything they can.. beautiful 400 buddy..
For putting the wheel weights on, get a longer bolt of the same thread and cut the head off. Insert into one hole and slide the weight on. No pinched fingers or smashed hands. keep up the good videos.
I absolutely love this! I’m sure that tractor / snowblower could’ve handled much more snow. When I lived in Michigan as a kid, I regularly handled more, with a 212 & 37A snowblower,
Just did our final mowing/leaf mulching Friday. Put the chains and plow on Saturday.Expecting snow tomorrow here in metro Detroit. The new exhaust valve and keepers I bought from you has my old Craftsman GT6000 w/the Kohler MV20 purring. Now we need to build a snow cab! Thanks Norman! ;-)
Norm, the easy way to install your chains is to jack the rear end up a few inches. I installed my TerraGrips this past weekend in 10 minutes, I also dropped some air pressure first, installed chains & aired back up to spec, easy peazy!
Looks like the 400 series Beats the 200 series for blowing snow. I plow with my 6x4 Gator now with 700lbs of sand bags in the back. Still limited with heavier 12"+ but fun most of the time. Look forward to more winter videos...🤠
You guys ain't alone in Maine. Here in Michigan we've had snow on the ground since the 9th, and it's been in the mid 20s to mid 30s all month. We've got a snow storm coming in just a few hours tonight that's supposed to drop 3-6 inches. It was 6-10 inches, but they lowered it. I hope to find a snow plow for my John Deere 316 (onan) soon.
Lookin’ good. I’m about to switch my 214 over for snow duty. Not nearly as big as the 400 but it will do the job. I’ll be mounting the 37A blower, chains and about 200lbs of rear weight.
Great video. Probably the best small tractor with snow equipment video I've seen. (and I've seen a few). Good narration, editing, music, and photography. I Only have a 214, W/ 38" blower, and no hydraulics. Your set-up is a residential killer. "So much" ballast. Perfect. Thanks for posting.
Couple things that'll make that blower preform better, a taller chute and some rubber flaps on paddles. The rubber flaps Will close up the gap between the blower shell and the paddles. Also get a electric actuator for the chute deflector.
A real TRACTOR! No wussy zero turn "mower", could ever do what these old tractors can do, no matter how much the those companies like to play the advertising gimmick with their "zero turn tractor" sales event BS! Zero Turns will never be a tractor, as much as they wish they could!
What would help put your wheel weights on is use some bolts extra long with the heads cut off then you slide the weight on and remove one starter dowel at a time and install the bolt it will save your fingers and having to fight with the weight.
Thanks for the Vid! I would not be getting my Deere ready for snow ops out in the snow! That should be done in a nice warm garage/shop! I like the starter weights, I didn't know they nested so well into the wheel like that.
The most recent plow video I did no music so you can just listen to the machine. I realize a lot of people like just listening to the engine so I will do that more often moving forward
looks like fun to snow blow from a tractor i use a cub cadet 582 to snow plow im looking to get a nsowblower for my cub cadet 1811 with a kohler magnum 18 nice work norman
Yeah, I have a couple of 214s and a 318. I have some Wheel Horses as well. Those old Deere s really are the best in the user friendly category. Front plow blade, snowblower and even the tiller are so well thought out for ease of use/install there's nothing close to them. Traction however definitely goes to my Wheel Horses. I've got my Deere s stuck a few times and had to pull them out with the horses I've got to remember their limitations more.
Thanks Norman. This helped with my new to me JD 400 with blower. Have you tried the flapper mod with baler belt? I can't wait to try it. I just need a 3 point hitch like yours. You must also be a kid of the 1980's, love the calculator watch!!!!
Hey Thanks! Yes I am a product of the 80's and always pined for a Calculator Watch, so as an adult, I wear one all the time =) I am glad this helped you. I do plan on doing the flapper mod in the next couple of weeks. Right now, I am trying to figure out a better way to install the blower. I was very lucky in this video to install it so easy on 1 take, but I tried to re-install this morning, and couldn't get the drive shaft to slide in easily as I picked up the blower to try to lock the pins in. It was a wrestling match. I am searching for a better way to get that all installed. Thanks again for your comment!
@@Isavetractors Im looking forward to your next 400 video, just saw the Plow refurbish. Use the hydraulics to lift the blower and the spring loaded pis will click in automaticall when left on teh open position. Dont forget to get the grease zerks on the blower driveshaft. Did you relube the blower gearbox? I just finished my 400 restomod (Vanguard 23HP, custom driveshaft, new tires, repaint) and getting the plow and blower up and ready is my next job. If you need the 400 service manual, let me know, I can help you out with that one.
@@owentimo I might be missing something but the blower doesnt have down pressure so the hydraulic wont push down enough to lift the pins in place like the plow does
I just subscribed to your channel because I am currently working on a JD 400. Love your channel. I also heard you say you are in southern Maine , I am as well, I live in the Kennebunk area.
Norm (and everyone else!)- the chain you showed is actually backwards (upside down). The piece that connects the cross links to the main chain is supposed to lay the other way. Not a big deal, they just fit/lay a little better on the tire

It throws snow like a boss. Better than a newer, bigger one of a different brand, that I saw recently...nice. Does it have a useful bucket for the front? Any idea what sort of weight it can lift without blowing a hose?
I could build a little bucket for the front it has 2000 psi hoses and the pressure relief I believe is only 900 psi so there should be no hoses being blown at any weight. I've put 500 pounds on the 3 point hitch and it lifts it easily.
isavetractors That's impressive, but when you say you could build one, is it not possible to buy one? Did they use the front for something specific, or is it just the age? I'll be in the market for a small to medium tractor in the hopefully not too distant future, and I'd actually prefer if I could get an older one, in good shape, but only if it could fill my needs of course.
I'm not sure if they made a bucket for it originally but there are some companies that make one now. If you look at the rest of my channel you'll see I build a lot of attachments for my machines 😉
