Omoda C5 Review: A Fancy Chery or Premium Car Contender?

  • The brand-new Omoda C5 has joined the popular coupe crossover segment with the aim of offering a premium drive at a more reasonable price. We sent Ash to test and review it in order to find out if it's any good.
    Omoda has placed itself as the premium arm of the Chery organisation. It shares much of its underlying parts with other Chery models but where it ups the ante is in the interior, the design and the wealth of on-board technologies.
    Is it going to be a hit with the SA buyers that are flocking to Chinese brands at the moment? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

    The fuel consumption is very accurate. I drive the Tiggo 4 Pro SE and get around 11.8km/l! Chery sales said to me that it will improve after my first service...I'm going for my 2nd service at 20 000km next week and I'm still avg. 11.8km/l...such a nice car, real petty about the fuel consumption...

    The Omoda C5 is now available in Spain for the equivalent of over R600,000. It’ll also be available in Italy later this year, and a UK launch is expected in February 2024.
    For the UK/EU market, the Omoda C5 uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with 145kW and 290Nm.

You're really good at this and between Ciro and yourself you guys are really carving out a very very good channel, with proudly South African roots (1 mill subs in the next few months maybe🤔?) - which to my knowledge is the only car channel we have that competes with the Mat Watsons and the Autotraders of the world.
    Stay awesome! Great review! 😁😁

    I am 42 years old. Tried German cars. Always loved German cars. Starting considering Chinese cars for value of money. But with all my research and experience, Japanese is the way to go. Toyota for me everyday.

      Chinese cars focus their value on the moment of purchase. Japanese cars provide their value after. Honda, Mazda, Toyota; all cars that keep a cap on their tech in order for us to have engines that last through the decades. Practicality should always be first for anybody over 30.

      Yes and no! the safety systems are too much. It’s cramped, Ashley should have sat in the passengers seats (which don’t adjust upward or downward even front and back) and felt his knees against the dashboard. Also the limited head room is an issue for me, fuel consumption was extremely high when i tested it as well (around 16l/100km) though it was a short urban drive. Interior is beautiful, the exterior can take some getting used to.

    Nice review as usual, thanks. How more luxurious is Omoda compared to the highest equally sized Cherry?
    How would you rate the 2 screens software compared to Haval, Proton, BAIC?
    Lastly, I'm a disabled driver and because my hands are always on the hand controls, I rely a lot on the virtual assistant. How good is it in the Cherry Group cars?
    Obviously I'm not able to test drive cars before I buy because I've got to buy first and have band controls fitted.

    Averaging 11l per 100km is just crazy for that sized engine, my 3.5l naturally aspirated V6 gets that with more grunt and a better sound. With South Africans being very brand loyal it will be interesting to see how this fares up against other luxury brands namely the German variety. Even Lexus and Infiniti battled to gain traction here.

    Definitely a premium contender especially considering it has better build and material quality than a Mercedes A Class lol. Although that isn't saying much considering how badly built a new A Class is. Even a Sandero feels more solid. Hehe. But anyway. Love what Chery is doing. If they can bring a premium hatch it would be cool.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 Год назад +2

      @@MzwandileHarmans it's true. These new Mercs interior build and material quality is disgusting. Sit in the A Class and all there is is plastic and cheap bits and parts of the interior move around when you use it. Feels like it'll fall apart if you press too hard or stare too hard. So sad what Merc has become and then they still cost so much. It isn't worth it anymore. In the past it was because you were getting a car built and engineered like no other. But these days a Peugeot 308, Renault Megane, BMW 1 series all have better build and materials than the A Class and they are all much cheaper.

      Premium contender🤔, lower the dosage mate

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 Год назад +3

      @@triple777seven Well if you sit in some of the cars from "premium" brands these days you'll see what I mean. The Mercedes A Class and new Audi A3 are prime examples. You pay double the price but get none of the features. Then you might say but you get the quality and solidity. Oh no. Not any more. The Audi and Merc have as much plastic as a basic Toyota Corolla. And in the case of the A Class, a Corolla feels better screwed together. I have a Mercedes. A 2014 E350 Bluetec. Mercedes was still making quality then. On numerous occasions I went to test drive newer models and Mercedes is only Mercedes in name now. Same for Audi. BMW seems to be the best right now since their cars have better build and materials by far and are also up in reliability rankings now. They let me loan a GLB for a week. A GLB220d. For R1.3 million as equipped for the one I drove, I couldn't understand why. It has so much hard cheap plastic. Half the interior bits feel like it was pasted on with Pritt. When the gearbox gets hot in stop start traffic it starts to lurch and get clunky. Overall, really shitty car for R1.3 million. The ride quality was however good despite having 20 inch rims and the interior did Look good with all the ambient lights. But looks is nothing without substance. I then for interest sake went to test drive a Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and honestly I was blown away. It genuinely felt more expensive and more premium than the GLB in almost every aspect. The materials used were far better. It felt solidly screwed together unlike the GLB. So yes. I stand by what I said. I've been a long time Mercedes owner. And my dad still has his model with 338,000kms on. They WERE once truly premium in every sense of the word. Not anymore. They justify their stupid prices by name only. There's nothing premium about them anymore other than the perceived premiumness of the badge.

Admittedly leather seats and a better sound system would be nice but all those so called features are just stupid gimmicks that you end up switching off because they're annoying. When are the manufacturers going to start offering worthwhile options like a choice of engines and gearboxes and maybe some interesting colour options? Grey and silver automatics are for retired people!

    Am I the only one who thinks the name OMODA was chosen on purpose to sound Japanese 😅
    To me it screams lack of confidence, and self awareness that despite their strong social media campaigning and the push for this idea that Chinese cars are taking over the world, the people still don’t perceive Chinese cars to be of high quality, and the Chinese car makers know. Admittedly there are some interesting new cars coming from China but based on an above average knowledge of how China and Chinese company operate I highly doubt that that they’re at the quality level of Korean, Japanese and German cars, even if they look well put together.

    This thing doesn't look good at all. It's as if someone was asked to quickly show the committee what he can do with the design app. Seats looks good though. That's it.

    I drove one last night and it’s a horrible car besides the luxury options.
    If you selected the manual mode, you can’t drive it in auto unless you switch off the car. Stupid.

      Lol, all car brands do this. Chinese are just better at it at a massive cost reduction. I guess you have to choose your poison. BAIC 3rd best manufacturer in China (state owned). Omoda was launched last year internationally, in my humble opinion these guys in China feed off each other. Whoever you buy, China still benefit.

    What is with this reviewer? Keep at least one, if not both hands on the steering wheel at all times! Not the first video I've seen where he does this, so he obviously thinks it's fine to do this.
