    If you are saying that larger companies buy smaller companies for the soul reason of eliminating potential future competition.. Then yes, I totally agree with that. I have also worked for small companies that were bought out by larger ones. They took the products they liked, rebranded them, then got rid of the rest of us as by that time, their inhouse staff had been trained on what our jobs were. WE became the overhead. Maybe its not so bad if you are in a large city with other options available to you, but in smaller ones, its devastating. Not that it matters to larger corporations.

    Two corrections to what was said in the video. 1) PS+ comprises 12% of Playstation's overall revenue, not "most" of their revenue as was said in the vid, and 2) GP growth is actually flat and not growing at all. We have data from the FTC leak that GP subs were at 34 million two years ago. Tom Warren recently reported that current 2024 GP total is 34 million - i.e., no growth at all over the past two years. Flat line.
    p.s. I should clarify, the 34 million in 2022 was total subs, GP + Live Gold combined. What MS then did was restructure the service tiers and labels, folding 11.7 million Live Gold subs into GP, now counting them as GP. They shifted numbers from one column to the next, although the actual numbers of total subs did not grow. 34 million in 2022, 34 million in 2024. MS shuffled the categories to make it look as if GP grew by 11 million from 2022 to 2024, but this was a mirage, a misdirection. They had merely folded 11 million Live Gold subs into the GP category.

    • @WinderTP
      @WinderTP 16 дней назад +3

      I was just thinking that MS must understand that since GamePass already provides such an insane value proposition, everyone who are incentivised to sub would've subbed already. When the overwhelming majority of your core target customers are already paying you, surely there won't be much room for growth, period. If they keep closing studios and throwing that value proposition down the drain instead of thinking up new ways of monetising the existing customer base, they may have issues on retaining their existing subscribers rather than growth.

      In a way it’s happening to Sony too not so much to Nintendo. That being said, there’s some bad fucking ass indies coming to PSN within 2024/25. I dunno about Xbox game store. For a lot of these indie studios, putting something on gamepass means actually less money than they could make if they just outright sold it. Xbox console sales are so low, so therefore it also means even bothering to put the title on Xbox store at all is too much risk and not worth the investment. With the switch 2 coming soon, plus the rise of PC handhelds I honestly don’t see a place for an Xbox at all. I still see a place for Sony, Nintendo and definitely PC.

    Gaming needs a consumer movement not unlike the recent ‘digitine’ movement taking over social media regarding celebrities. We need to promote not purchasing AAA titles until we see a dramatic shift in priorities and oversight in how these games are made. This is absolutely unsustainable and we’re headed for another collapse. Budgets are out of control, successful studios are being shuttered for not be Uber-successful and games are increasing getting worse with support and quality control, a new live service every single day comes out that doesn’t get supported because of critical misunderstanding of the market. People need to unilaterally stop purchasing AAA titles and play small private studio games.

    • @robertobrien1069
      @robertobrien1069 14 дней назад

      I mean to argue the capitalist point of it, sort of, but also not really. You stand to make money in capitalism from putting your capital at risk. That’s exactly what happened here.
      Xbox leveraged a shit ton of Microsoft’s capital to buy new studios, fund massive AAA games, and sell consoles at a loss. They were able to spend the capital on the promise of x revenue compared to y cost of the acquisitions. They didn’t, and this was likely the last straw. All things considered, I’m surprised Phil Spencer still has a job. I think he has done a great job at repairing the Xbox brand, but he has consistently underperformed compared to Sony, and thus Microsoft’s expectations.
      Microsoft allowed Phil Spencer to buy public opinion in the wake of the mishandling of the 8th generation of consoles. There would be no golden days of Game Pass or Xbox Series S without the stupid Kinect and $500 launch price. Xbox One was a disaster compared to Xbox 360, they had to do everything they can to win back some marketshare.
      But the fact of the matter is, Lawrence is absolutely correct, the future of gaming is on PC and Mobile. Hobbyist gamers will switch to PC and casual gamers who bought an Xbox to play Madden or FIFA will be able to do that through streaming.
      Microsoft basically already owns the PC, that’s why they’re able to make a 35% profit margin, they have a monopoly on the personal computer operating system, so they can charge whatever they want. Why would they continue to operate in a sector where they can only make a single digit profit?
      That’s why it’s not really capitalistic because what Microsoft would really like is to stop competing with Playstation. They don’t care. They’re happy to give up and let Sony win the console war because Xbox is a hobby to Microsoft compared to their practice of printing money from Windows and Office licenses.
      They’re much happier to sell you a license for an OS that costs them pennies on the dollar to develop, for you to use on hardware that they don’t have to subsidize. To then let you rent games from them on a network that you don’t own.
      That’s what it boils down to, they’re coming for the untapped PC market. All those gamers who aren’t paying for a third-party network to host their games, that’s free money right there, and they’ll get to control your operating system so that you have to pay for it. Welcome to the future, it sucks.

It has been so cool to watch you grow as one of my early favs on Funhaus into what you and Bruce are doing now, and am excited to see what you create with the new hires you mentioned.

      Not really. Turns out universal healthcare would save the US government money.
      The subsidies the government pays (not including what we pay as customers on top) cost more than if the government was to just pay for every single medical expense directly.
      So it costs more money for the government to fund a private company that already over charges customers.

    Thank you for this piece - it's one of the most grounded and logical takes on the situation I've seen.
    As a former Bullfrog employee who has experienced being taken over (by EA) and then ground to the dust like so many other creative studios before and after, it was clear to me where the ABK acquisition was leading.
    All those cheerleading the take over were blinded to the fact that this kind of spend brought xbox right into the clutches of the main corporation and will result in the death of many other smaller creative studios. This is just the start.

    might be an obvious thing to say, but i think we'll be seeing the rift between indie gaming and high-budget gaming widen to the point where they become two completely distinct and independent realities from one another, that don't ever mix because it's beneficial to neither to do so. I mean, it's already like this, but with more and more indie games coming out and more and more A or AA studios being shut down with their talent scattered to the wind, we'll see basically two distinct yet equally beloved classes of gaming in the market.
    More creative/innovative studios will not even want to gamble on the AAA market as it becomes a lot more hostile to them.

    A lot of your final conclusion is similar to my take on the film industry. Right now, the art is being held by independent cinema that isn’t creating the massive revenue the larger studios are seeking. Though that resulted in companies like A24 needing to license massive brands like Friday the 13th to bring in more money, and can result in less of the vibrant films we’ve seen over the last 10 years. We need more people willing to put aside the professionalism you “need” to see onscreen, and open ourselves to the artists who are proud to work with what they have and are earnest in their art. RUclips is a solid distribution platform, but I wish there were platforms such as Tubi aren’t owned by larger studios and are instead independently owned. That’s a major reason why I am a huge supporter of Troma and their streaming service/film.

  • @Andrew-bj5kx
    @Andrew-bj5kx 17 дней назад +3

    Yep - Extend, embrace, extinguish. That's been Microsoft's MO for forever. This is pretty standard practice for them. They're not about product, they're about market control. Not just in games, but everywhere. But Phil Spencer knew that and that was a huge reason in buying those studios. And I guarantee once they finish this round of closures with Bethesda and in Activision, the dust settles, Microsoft may start growing a little and Xbox fans have forgotten and/or forgiven them for this, and they're going to be on the hunt for more studios. I'd be surprised if they didn't have their eyes on EA or even 2K, just waiting for them to make a misstep and swoop in to purchase them (or maybe even Take Two before GTA comes out, but that's a stretch). They've explicitly said their goal is to buy out the competition and starve the rest - right in line with Microsoft. If they're left unchecked, this honestly could be the start of a very slow and serious decline to the gaming industry as a whole, leaving only one or two publishers with maybe two consoles (Nintendo's and one other) on the market. PC will be the only way to go, buying indie games, but even still I don't see a lot of that, just considering the money it would take. And if they get too big risk being bought by one of the two big ones and extinguished like the rest. Hooray for unregulated late stage capitalism woooo

    • @Andrew-bj5kx
      @Andrew-bj5kx 17 дней назад

      @@shawngaines1117 I honestly hope you're right. I really do. Just given how these things are treated in American courts, especially even more so over the last 5-10 years, they always tend to side with corporations. And especially now that there's a precedent set with Microsoft buying Activision, any party trying to stop another large acquisition like that is going to have even harder of a time. And given that the FCC and others failed with the first, short of a straight literal monopoly, I don't see it getting any easier for them to shut down another one. Also looking at the mergers happening in the media industry, telecommunications industry, and others, bigger, more eyebrow-raising mergers have gone through unscathed. I don't see Microsoft having too many legal issues. Maybe I'm just a nihilist. But I've had a pretty good personal track-record with predicting these things, which kinda bums me out. Again though, I really really hope you're right.

    Loved the video, Lawrence as always is super well spoken and always explains with sources which I really appreciate. Could we get a video at some point detailing how PlayStation is doing? Are they starting to shift that way as well? I've always played playstation, not because of any reason other than the consoles being handmedowns from other people; but I remember when Xbox started buying all these studios thinking about getting one, since they seemed to have the better deal. I don't like the direction described now so I'm glad I didn't. Just wondering if I'm screwed regardless.

    Thanks for building your case Lawrence. I have also been thinking about this, as xbox has some of my favorite smaller ips (AoE, psychonauts, state of decay), and I couldn't understand why. It makes more sense now under this context. It also feels like xbox is now just catching up to the industry as a whole unfortunately. Big publishers only focusing on big live service games.
    If they start to shutter studios in the 40-50 tier, I'm gonna take a sick day off work.

    As sad as it is to see these studios go, I understand their decision as a short term business decision. These studios are pretty niche and don't generate substantial subscription growth. What I'm wondering is if these decisions were worth the massive hit on their public image and the confidence of their developers.

I enjoy finding those charming inventive ideas coming out of that scene. And the pure genius and tenacity of the retro scene to revive and port those older experiences to new hardware.
    It does hurt that Ill probably never see that pure Quake III Arena style game if they kill id but that genre really does along time ago so I might as well be holding my breath for a Starcraft Ghost revival.

    Another option for them is to trim all outflows of cash and clean up all around the balance sheet to make them totally saleable but I don't know other companies that would want to buy them so got to show a profit for their stockholders. Even Bathesda in their connection to the tv show fallout put in the deal of fiduciary responsibility to their stockholders to make money! That leaves anyone other than owners will not make money or even be able to get service when the service part of it is sold off. lol Catch 22

    I think one of the largest reasons for why Microsoft closed the studios they did was that these studios had little in active development. If they need to cut down on their studios, it makes sense to target an area they don't have the time or allocated resources to manage effectively so studios under Bethesda make sense to target, but from reporting on the closures we learned that both Arkane and Tango were only in the process of pitching their next projects which means not much money would've been invested in ongoing development on them. If they were in the middle of even pre-production that'd be a significant amount of money wasted on those projects if they got shut down alongside the studios but since neither studios were at that stage of development there's nowhere near as much lost investment.
