... Purchase studio. Obtain IPs. Close studio. Keep IPs. Do nothing with them. It is the big business way.
Honestly baffling. Cannibalising art for endless profit and expansion
@@popcornfilms1 I mean... We could finally end the Legacy of Kain saga... Or we can make a MOBA called Nosgoth, completely misunderstanding what the Legacy of Kain is as a franchise, and when that doesn't work, we blame the fans for not purchasing the LoK product and sell the rights off to Embracer Group, who will proceed to do nothing with it!
They did a Konami.
@@nielsmichiels1939 I mean, at least Konami lets the guys who made Vampire Survivors throw a bunch of Contra character into their game. Honestly... Konami isn't the worst. Anymore. They still suck but like, at least we got the Dead Cells Castlevania DLC.
Studios who sell out to a bigger company i.e. Microsoft etc. Deserve everything they get. Nobody is owed a job.
Stop buying CoD
you're right, salmon is better
I never bought any of them. It takes a special kind of stupid to enjoy these games. I am not one of those dogs that run after their tails.
Amen brother
Never bought it anyways. Not a fan of military games.
@@celuiquipeut6527yeah, sports fans. The Ven Diagram of sports and CoD players is basically a circle.
Not to detract from Bruce and Lawrence but I just want to take a moment to say I'm happy to see Brian's face. I haven't been catching all IG content lately so I'm not sure when the last time he was here but it's always a pleasure to see him.
Bruce and Lawrence only! How darrre you appreciate anyone else
@@YaddleOrder66 😂
It's great to be here! Love doing the news for you guys.
Loved hearing Brian's voice😊
Microsoft: We're so happy with Hi-Fi Rush's success.
Also, Microsoft: Let's get rid of it.
Yeah they ruined themselves with that decision 🙄 😒
They didn't even sell it, they closed. What the fuck were they thinking?
more like:
XBOX: We're so happy with Hi-Fi Rush's success.
Microsoft: Let's get rid of it.
Is no longer xbox gaming is MICROSOFT gaming.
they are taking over the whole division
Except they didn't get rid of it. They will continue to make money from it, and will do it happily. It's just the people who made it won't benefit from any sales going forward.
@notownself Everyone is still asking that question, and they keep skirting around it. Someone will be a whistle-blower and spill the beans eventually.
As a single player gamer, loosing Tango Gameworks and Arkane at the same time was too big a loss for me. I don't want to know anything even related to Xbox releases anymore.
Matt Booty really living up to his name
He lives up to the title of Asshole.
Thomas Boonty would never have done this
@@blackjack9240Boonty Box is thriving rn
@@blackjack9240 the lore is on point with this one 👌
We should not consider ourselves 'fans' of any company. We are customers, not fans.
Microsoft: "Hey thanks for making Hi-Fi Rush for us! This games gonna make us a boat load of money. Not you, because you're fired, but us, hell yeah!"
Just pure selfish greedy bullshit at its finest 👌 🙄
We've arrived at a point where devs can do exactly what these big corporations want and STILL lose.
You could ask an acclaimed satirist to come up with a story about how fucked up the video game industry is and they wouldn't come up with anything as absurd and damning as "Microsoft wants more games like Hi-Fi Rush, closes studio that made Hi-Fi Rush".
It's the same as what happened back in 2018 when the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders hired on Jon Gruden to be their head coach and GM. Before the season started, Gruden traded the Raiders' star pass rusher, Khalil Mack. After the Raiders got beat in their first game, the press asked Gruden about the bad performance of the defense, and Gruden answered, "It's hard to find a good pass rusher."
It's because nobody really looks deeper in to the story. He didn't say "We need more games like Hi-Fi Rush", he said "We need more small scale games", aka cheaper games. Hi-Fi Rush was absolutely NOT a small scale game based on the budget that went in to it, and so he's talking about much smaller and probably more indie games over things like Hi-Fi Rush.
Yeah... from all the marketing I've seen for Hellblade 2, Ninja Theory is definitely next.
I feel it coming too and it’s gonna suck when it does. NT was independent for as long as it was to avoid this exact situation. Itd be especially ironic after effectively cutting ties with Playstation
Sony and Microsoft in a contest see who can be more hated by the end of the year
Sony didn’t even do anything that bad
@@Shirou8492 , correct, PSN mandatory linking isn't a problem at all
Meanwhile Nintendo quietly in the corner suing the ever living shit outta anyone trying to emulate their old games
You're right about Sony doing some really shady shit, but they completely miscalculated how COVID affected gaming and over hired a lot of people. The Helldivers 2 situation was pretty shady too, but at least they backed off real quick, the Helldiver community should definitely be a case study for future markets!
But Xbox is just shitting the bed every night at this point. From the launch of the Xbox One with the Kinect, to the Activision/Blizzard acquisition that was way overpaid, to two months ago where they had a Ted Talk about the "future of XBOX", culminating in last week's studio shut down fiasco, just sums up what a lot of PS fanboys have been saying for the last couple of years.
And Lawrence stated this last year "they're coming to knock on Phil Spencer's door for that Activision money and he better have it". Guess what, he doesn't have nearly half of it, somebody is going to buyout Xbox's studios and that will be that, Uncle Bill is not founding his charities' tax deductions with prayers and wishful thinking.
Fun fact. Brian garr has a stand-up special on Tubi in case anyone wants to check that out. I was scrolling through the other day and I'm like well. I'll be damned
It's on Prime too!
Netflix be knockin BG. Well done dude.
Everyone took a multi-year wait and see attitude on Phil and MicroSoft..... then it became a self fulfilling prophecy and now we all act surprised.
I wasn't i knew from the get go that Phill was just a figure head to try to clear xbox's bad name.
Sorry, but you cant just clear a 20 year rep of bad business decisions and ire to the gaming public by making it worse but say "but the CEO seems like Nice Guy".
I never believed his "I'm a gamer too" facade
He gets paid millions of dollars in a corpo job. He gotta lie to get paid.
@@nielsmichiels1939 it's even worse than that. After the whole Xbox One Kinect fiasco, they should've dropped Phil that same year. But I don't think that Phil calls the shots, Xbox is a very tiny division inside the colossus that Microsoft is.
At some point, the Xbox is going to fade away and Phil Spencer will be blamed as the dude who ruined an entire company, when in reality Microsoft's aggressive buyout tactics are just demolishing gaming studios left and right. Maybe they think that everyone wants a COD or a FIFA, while a lot of consumers just want a good singleplayer narrative, or a coop PVE.
We have our established Battle Royals, Shooters and Sports, make new online genres or new singleplayer games, that's it.
I mean they have amazing IP's, like Gears and Halo. I've never played either, but maybe remake Halo into two different likes, a competitive shooter with more classical controls and make a Halo singleplayer narrative that is more grounded, with height like what Santa Monica did to GoW.
Shit, remake the first Halo games like Capcom did with RE, just do something with your legacy! Kingdom Under Fire, Gears, Halo, there are so many good Xbox classics"
@@rexus619
Phill came after the whole xbox one _"you have to register the game and console to your account"_ and the forced kinect.
They fired that guy that tried to turn the xbox into "a entertainment system"
(because the xbox one was just a cable box that you could also game on)
(well that was the initial idea anyway)
I believe it was an honest statement saying they want more games like Hi-Fi Rush.
They just don't want to have to pay people to make those games.
The ultimate business goal: Riches and praise without spending a dime.
If a game fails “devs fault”, if a game is a success “it’s because of MS” this is how Xbox fans think. They forgot mega corp doesn’t care about them, they care about their wallet
All those blazers and graphic tees were a charade after all! Jokes aside Bruce said it best at the start o7
They kept confusing what Xbox does and what Microsoft does the whole time. It's actually a different group of people saying / doing these things.
Xbox said we want more games like Hi-fi Rush, Microsoft said yeah cool but Activision tho.
I'm so glad to see Brian Gaar as a regular on the show, I really missed him on Inside Gaming
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
“The Rooster Teeth of video games” was hilarious
Dude, now no company under Microsoft is safe. I specifically worry about the folks over at Obsidian. Is Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 negatively impacted by this? Will the company shutdown after or even before then under Microsoft's control..? I love Obsidian bro, I want them to make more games. How disheartening...It's because of that giant $70B Activision-Blizzard acquisition that made it so now all these studios need to come together and make way more money than before to plug back up that $70B hole they just burnt in their pocket, and then some. They don't need just one Hi Fi Rush, but they need like, 50 of those. I have a feeling the way things are going now that that's not going to happen. This may be the start of the end, for Xbox...
Microsoft should just be a publisher at this point. Gamepass isn't a money maker people claim it to be. The costs of keeping it going is outweighing the benefits
They don't *need* anything, Microsoft is operating at a 22billion dollar profit as of last quarter which was higher than projected and expected.
It's about what they want - a magic ticket live service game with infinite income.
@@linger4605 I agree. Microsoft has trillions and can't even compete with Sony and Nintendo despite buying loads of studios.
Dude, it's Obsidian.
Of course they're not gonna survive this. They killed Arkane.
@@KingAgniKai They're already closing studios that they just acquired. Definitely bad news for the future
That interview on Bloomberg with Sarah Bond (XBox President) was a classic example of corpo 'some minutes filled with some words' It was a textbook example of vacuous corp speak. It was painful AF.
Matt should have stopped at Boonty Box and bowed out. Now his power is closing studios smh
Tomas Boonty would be ashamed
tomas let him go for a reason. he just wasn't fit to realize his boonty dream
Huge fan of the "new this week" section of these videos, this is basically the only way I even learn about games anymore.
Lol I was told Microsoft acquiring all these studios was a good thing but all we’ve seen is them closing them down like EA does 😂
As one of the 10 people who owned (and liked) a Windows Phone, I learned my lesson about 9 years ago. 😂 Grab a seat, have some tea.
I really enjoy seeing Mr. Gaar back on the Weekend Roundup. Keep up the good work dudes.

I've got news for you, we haven't been able to trust them since the XBOX ONE controversy.
Love these roundups, thanks guys. And you're right, love the outtakes too.
My favorite part of this so far is how at that tech conference Sarah Bond walked out to "Heartbeats" by ...The Knife...
A gamer in his 30s I was growing a lil callous but Hi Fi rush made me feel something. Especially working a droning job myself. I seriously had the passing thought… should I just quit games. Money always win
Another Inside Games banger, keep up the great work!
Hey its brian! i remember the core group of you guys got me through some rough times several years ago, glad to see you guys together again
AAA gaming corporations are doing the *exact same thing* streaming services did a few short years ago, in abruptly ending really popular original series before (or just as) they hit their stride.
When the gaming industry workers inevitably unionize, the AAA corps will have absolutely *ZERO* bargaining power - just like the streaming services - because they don’t have anything enticing for workers (like the stability that comes from working on popular, long-standing series).
It blows my mind.
I'm skeptical unions will really be a thing massively among tech workers. Most of them think themselves as the next Tim Apple, and making the corpo's life harder will make their life harder when they inevitably hit it big with their killer app.
Maybe it'll happen if tech ends up becoming something akin any other trade.
@@diegowushu Tech workers in gaming are CHRONICALLY underpaid and exploited. They’ll be the first, I’m sure. Besides, QA departments are already unionizing (Raven software), and SEGA workers in the US also recently unionized.
@@diegowushu Yeah and like that will ever happen when even trades like auto repair is all becoming standardized to proprietary operating systems and you can't work on anything yourself anymore. The tech industry doesn't want you to own anything, they want you to be subservient to the apple store and never fix your own machines. The corporation always wins, never forget that.
@@diegowushu wellllllll, I wouldn’t be too sure about that, at least in gaming. Raven software QA testers unionized a few years ago and SEGA USA employees also recently unionized.
In the tech sector, gaming workers are by far the worst compensated and most badly treated; I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re the ones who take the lead in the sector on unionizing (as we’ve already seen it start).
@@JohnBendheim there are right to repair laws starting to crop up to counter that BS from tech giants. At some point the CFPB will get some teeth.

I dunno how they shit the bed this hard. I was waiting for this video to get made just to get some more insight on this crazy ass news.
Betting it all on Gamepass. Xbox division really thought people were going to buy Xbox's and Gamepass to play their exclusives. They didn't and they won't. It already peaked.
After 20 years as an Xbox fan boy I'm finally jumping ship for play station.
Figured I'm eventually going to make the move to P.C anyways, at which time I can re-subscribe to game pass. Hopefully they'll have some new games by then
PC and Playstation is the ultimate gaming setup. no need for an XBox
Be prepared to be disappointed, since it's the same shitshow in a different box
That interview with Bloomburg had a tremendous moment with the camera work. During that nothing reply you guys mentioned, the camera cuts wide and you see the year over year graph above them. The HUGE bars of profit have started sliiiiightly lowering, so its time to cut.
I like the small outtake clips.
Best gaming news channel out here
All this does is make the books look good short term.
I cant imagine this is good business at all.
Excellent video again guys. If I could I would donate. Keep it up.
It is still crazy to me that after 7 years for the switch and now close to 4 years for the ps5 that we have seen NO prices decreases what so ever, every other generation before this had some type of price cut, but this generation is not doing that, to me that just means the corporate greed has gotten out of hand, these companies are just holding prices up trying to scrape as much money from consumers as possible, and I'm kind of sick of it
It's wild how much Brian Gaar sounds like Bryan Quimby
Satya Nadella CEO of Microsoft is the CEO of Xbox not Phil Spencer. Even the founders of Xbox left Xbox and that should tell you that Microsoft pretty much either fire them or they left on their own accord because let's just be honest they founded Xbox to be a separate entity from Microsoft for once the 360 era came to an end it's pretty clear Microsoft took over Xbox directly.
Really hope we get Prey 2 someday
ugh yes more gaming inside me please daddies
I lost trust for Xbox like 10 years ago when they pulled that stunt trying to force every Xbox One to be required to have internet to function. Haven’t purchased a single Xbox product since and I don’t plan to either. Microsoft had a lucky hit with the 360 and have been riding that high ever since.
Ah yes the profit motive, so easily forgotten.
is it ok to pre order EDF 6?
Wasn’t part of the point of gamepass was because Microsoft was going to make their first parties free on it? Now they close their studios which devalues the future potential of gamepass.
The idiots didn’t realize that they cannibalize their own sales. And gamepass subscribers have come to a complete stop and it’s not growing. Add to that the buyout of blizzard/activision
Brian Garrrrr! I love that guy!
So Sony does something stupid and Microsoft says "we can't let them have all the hate 🙃"
Cannot wait for next week to Sony to say "Hold my beer."
God the industry is honestly fucked.
@@TyranusRex721Sony made one mistake.. don't get me wrong they have made a few mistakes before.. however Microsoft have been making mistakes for over a decade.
14:20 LMAO Brian is a legend.
It’s almost like why Sony didn’t do a gamepass, they said why, people trashed them and here we are
Loving the Cardinals hat there Mr. Gaar.
Sometimes companies buy and close studios not to make money, but to stifle competition. They don't care if it exists, as long as it's not making someone else money.
I wonder if London Studio and Deviation Games are all going "HEY! Where's all the outage that we were shut down?!"
They realized that they were too far behind in Halo to make it a GaaS so they bought CoD to have that income
Hades came out in 2020. Love the channel 12:34
Pappa don't Phil!
My Prediction for the future is that before you play a game in gamepass you have to watch a 1 to 2 minutes ad also they probably have a tech to detect that you pause the game and play ad like wat is youtube or amazon doing
8:17
THIS, this is what I always thought why Phil Spencer decisions to buy big studios especially ABK for the Gamepass growth is stupid move when they said "they don't want to restrict the creatives".
Love Brian
@2:04 as someone who has been laid off from a company the went from 300+ down to 20 people because of management, Lawrence is showcasing how I am feeling right now...
Can we just say that the Activision acquisition was the worst decision XBox made?
Varys Brightflame is what I'm hoping for. Its the best "story" in my head, not sure if I'm expecting it though
Damn they reminded me I never finished Braid lol. Got it +10 years ago.
I've heard braid is a pretty creative game 🎮 👌
I love gaming!
Do we riot?
I kept saying the ABK deal was bad for gamers and gaming as a whole and nobody listened to me. Microsoft is where IP goes to die. 99% of the IP they aquired through ABK will never see new games. Ever.
Everybody said that.. only the fanboy of xbot was like its good for the industry.
@@khrisnah09 It seemed like the entire internet was rooting for that deal to go through. With the exception of Sony fanboys. I don't care at all about COD. I care about all the other Activision IP that was swept up in this deal. Like Crash and Tony Hawk among others.
I absolutely resonate with Lawrence’s frustration. They can’t even come up with a good lie!
I remember telling RUclips not to recommend this channel, and yet here we are.
Moral of the story don't sell out to big companies!
I feel like most of Nintendo's, atleast recent history history has been a constant up and down of "bust to boom"
They really seem to, in my opinion, be one of the few video game companies that's constantly trying new things and seeing if they work.
Doesn’t like Barbie or Oppenheimer but likes Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League…only the hottest of takes here folks
"The middle managers are stressed so we have to let go HUNDREDS of people!" Lawrence is perfect at boiling down this nonsensical industry.
As a long time xbox player, it sucks to see this happen. Was it surprising? absolutely not. Is it surprising that some’s people’s reaction is to “jump ship” to playstation? Also sadly not surprising. But if past is prologue, there is a decent chance that we’ll see disrupter companies popping up in 5 or so years after Sony and Microsoft create a gaming desert.
Thumbs up for Brian’s cardinal hat. Love to see it!
Throwing my xbox in the bathtub right now to pee in the vents.
How can we trust Microsoft now?
what do you mean? Microsoft pushed away Bungie and closed down Lionhead Studios. Not only that they had closed down so many game studios like Digital Anvil, Ensemble, Aces Game Studios. Microsoft literally destroyed their old studios so they had to go on a massive shopping spree during the second half of the Xbox One era. Remember how it was weird that MS was using a lot of third party exclusives when the Xbox One came out, stuff like Titanfall, Tomb Raider, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive. it was because they gutted most of their own devs and had no one making games for them.
Btw Hellblade 2 has very little to no advertising or marketing yet it’s only a week away…
I believe Microsoft is secretly trading small studios to nintendo and ps, but at the end microsoft will have all the big games like cod, minecraft, roblox etc...
I'm not going to lie, Lawrence's face scare the hell out of me when he popped up on my screen.
That fuck by bruce was so genuine. Lol excellently expresses what we are all feeling.
As someone who saw this coming years ago, and has been pretty vocal about it, I've already made my peace with this. This is going to have a huge ripple effect, not just with Xbox, but with the whole gaming industry. Though it will get pretty bad at Xbox.
With the Switch leading to more handheld popularity, would've loved to see a psp resurrection with a current cpu/gpu in the same shape. Maybe try umds again they were only a little funny sounding.
My Xbox Live account is almost _nineteen years old._ If they lay a finger on Ninja Theory after Hellblade 2 launches, I'm done.
Ninja Theory is definitely next to get shut down. Hellblade 2 will flop because no one in xbox wants to play "movie type games"!
If it was released on ps 5, ninja thoery may survived.
Sony, Nintendo, and various AAA publishers are making similar strides, albeit in different ways. IMO the only solution for consumers is to move away from traditional consoles to PCs configured to behave like consoles with operating systems like Steam OS, Chimera OS, or the upcoming Playtron OS.
PC's 😂😂😂😂😂 no thanks. Sony made one mistake.. and fixed it.. Xbox been making big mistakes for over 13years.
@@hulkhogan12345 : The PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S are really no different than *PCs with closed ecosystems* -- no mods, no fan-translations, a limited selection of gamepads, and incredibly few releases every year by comparison.
