An Xbox handheld has never been done, and something like that would be really cool. I think the steam deck as the main competitor would be a good ring for them to enter as they sorta have the biggest visible hold on that market that isn't a switch. the sony handheld being streaming only makes it a very specific clientele, if xbox were able to do a cool handheld then that might give them a bit of life. You had a dozen smaller companies that were there to make the best product then we're all snatched up by larger companies that have one purpose, deliver profit to shareholders. It's the same thing we see in movies, television, software, you name it. Consolidation of the myriad companies that used to exist consumed by larger companies that aren't concerned with making the best product just making the most profit.

They don't want the gears of war trilogy's shitty sequels, they don't want Bethesda's lies and buggy, boring games, they dont want the new Halo titles which are atrocious, they dont want Fables fabled over promised and under delivered products. They are good. They don't even care about franchises anymore. They care about good games, good world design and memorable experiences. They are the harshest critics of their own exclusives and they let the developers know it. That aside, if xbox players want PS games, they should be welcomed with open arms.

I loved my Xbox One S I got it cheap and it carried me through the last generation, I was eager to buy a series X but there was nothing to get me to pay upwards of $500 for what is seemingly just a newer Xbox. I eventually bought a PS5 because God Of War absolutely blew me away and even then I sort of regret buying it because since then nothings really come out to justify the upgrade. I don’t really see myself upgrading to the next generation if there’s no new games to lineup the hardware let alone buying something as worthless as a PS5 Pro. If these companies really want people to buy their systems they need actual new games that are only available on those systems. Otherwise what’s even the point of having these consoles if I can just keep playing on that same Xbox one I got in like 2017?

I think the best play is definitely moving towards being an open platform/publisher. Given how much PC gaming has exploded in the past couple gens, I think it'd be wise for MS to lean into that advantage more. Xboxes are already running on (heavily) modified versions of Windows, so I don't think it'd be _too_ much of a stretch for them to bring more of that PC gaming experience to their consoles.
Ease off the specialized hardware R&D and focus on making attractive console-esque living room PCs. Let it run Steam, let people upgrade some of the components, be supportive of more interesting peripherals and accessories, normalize the inclusion of real graphics settings so players can tune their own experience, etc. The market is more informed and tech savvy than ever, so I think we're long overdue for a console that stops babying players and actually offers some flexibility and power-user features.

I took my first few IT certificate prep classes in 2002 and I remember my teacher was absolutely convinced that game consoles wouldn't exist in 20 years and they would just be programs on our pc. This was when the Xbox was hot. We were all playing the new Halo game in our free time and bringing Xboxes and tvs to each others houses to play it. But I was also emulating NES on my pc and I liked pc better overall for gaming with 64 player BF1942 and dedicated servers. That old man knew what he was talking about though! As soon as playstation now and gamepass became a thing, I knew he was right and it's just a matter of time before the hardware disappears.
One of his crazier predictions was that Microsoft would go under completely because people would get so fed up with them. The antitrust trial was still fresh so it wasn't unreasonable. Personally I hope that prediction comes true in our lifetime but they have a lot of money and are slippery snakes.

This shouldn't be a surprise, but I seriously still don't know what is exactly at the root of Xbox's problem. The obvious ones are that their exclusives have been either mid or plain terrible for years now, they have a way worse streak than PlayStation and that's undeniable.
Creating an inferior version of their next-gen was also a horrible design decision that even lead to developer issues and inferior ports - that one also should've been obvious in hindsight. But there is something seriously messed up with Xbox's leadership. Whether its micromanaging projects to the point of extremity, or just that they like to throw money on the fires to "fix" problems, I don't really know.
This gen leading Xbox into a Sega situation would be something I would not be too surprised to see coming in the near future.

It creates brand loyalty, sometimes for better or worse as far as internet discussions go but it creates it nonetheless. Sony as well, especially during the PS4 era, was coming out with banger after banger and when they did that "game sharing" commercial it was this awesome hilarious pro-consumer move and it made me happy with my purchase. Granted these days I genuinely regret getting a PS5 everything coming out on it is coming to PC so I should have just used the money and bought some more RAM or a better CPU or something. Also the exclusives PS5 has are like 2 at this point? FF16 was pretty cool I guess but not worth that $600. They got lucky my PS4 broke, I should have just replaced it with a used PS4.

    How to fix Xbox:
    1. Get rid of the confusing naming convention (One, Series, X and S). If parents going out to buy Timmy the new gamebox Plus can't quickly and easily distinguish one version from the other, then you've already failed as a product because you're frustrating the customer BEFORE they've even made a purchase. It's a big part of why the Wii U flopped like it did.
    2. Suck it up, accept the sunk cost fallacy and let a lot of the dev studios go independent again. MS loaded up on debt to buy a lot of studios without a whole lot to show for it. LIke Bruce said - they're given a mandated profit margin for success, so they're not going to take risks in this environment where one game that doesn't meet that minimum % means lots of talented people are told they're being laid off by MBA finance bros who only buy two games a year: Madden and the new CoD.
    3. Stop competing with Sony on hardware performance, start focusing on quality and variety of games. It's why Xbox is more or less dead as a brand in asia.

Not that this would ever happen, but I wish they’d make a Games Anywhere service (a la Movies Anywhere). I own all three consoles, but I’m starting to hesitate buying games at all (except on my Switch).
I got on board with all digital in the 360 era, and kept with Xbox for most games because that’s where my library is, but now the fear of Xbox failing because they won’t ever be able to come close to Sony (as the PS4 era is when most people started seriously building their digital libraries) makes me want to hold out on most purchases until Xbox’s future becomes more clear.
This is bad for both Sony and Xbox, as I’m not buying all that much from either of them until I feel the dust has settled, and I can see where others like me are likely in the same situation.
A Games Anywhere service would alleviate that problem. Plus, even if you own all consoles, how likely are you to buy a game more than once? The third party publishers would have no problem with it, and it wouldn’t affect first party titles, anyway.
Personally, I’d probably be far more likely to buy from both, since I would feel more confident that my library would continue to be usable down the line. I’d also be far more likely to maintain online subscriptions for both (I don’t currently on PS), since I know that I’d be able jump on board with friends on either network.

I know Sony is putting their ip on pc as well but they are cautious and looking at Xbox that’s a good reason to be cautious. Just to bring this up as well, but these companies do know that people are straight cracking and downloading these games as soon as they drop on pc right? I mean, isn't this exactly what Phil Spencer wants the Xbox brand to be? Game Pass is available on PC and all of the Xbox exclusives are available on PC as well on release. Additionally, many Xbox exclusives come to Playstation not long after release or even on release due to how recently they acquired most of their studios, and Microsoft's commitment (legal requirement in the case of COD) to not wanting to make games exclusive with the exception of heavy hitters.
As of now there isn't any reason to buy an Xbox console. There is plenty of reason to be on Game Pass and other Xbox services, but all those games and services are easily accessible through other hardware that lots of people likely already have (PC or Playstation 5).

I think the plan was to continue making xbox exclusives which made enough money for generations of xbox consoles to fund their software development. This formula changed when xbox gamepass made its way to other platforms (because it became so profitable and successful). Now Microsoft has what it always wanted, a profitable software platform which makes its way on all devices (cough cough windows OS)

So I have always had Xbox since I was a kid and I was research Xbox 360 versus PS3; I very quickly realized I would never get my mom to drop $400-$600 on anything but a hobby that could become a career in her eyes. So I got an Xbox even though I had a PS2 like everyone else. Ever since I have been a huge Halo fan, and really never liked PlayStation exclusives as I really liked online games throughout my teens, and most PlayStation games are single player focused. Nowadays, I like single player games more, but not the cinematic ones from PlayStation, I just like Min/Maxing and a good narrative, and I find really advanced graphics games can distract me from playing the actual game I don’t like.
Anyways, I have tons of Xbox games from buy things on sale and having game pass. Literally almost 500 games at this point on just Xbox.
I noticed the other day that there were games on the Xbox store that I had literally no clue were there, and would have played earlier had I know I could even play them. This would just be me being oblivious, but these are indie games that I know to have had a good amount of success and critical acclaim; they had like 8-20 reviews/consumer ratings a piece with 5 star reviews and if I went on steam they would have a few thousand reviews probably. I started to wonder if there’s this compounding effect of people not buying Xboxes, then developers take longer to put the game on Xbox, then when the game comes out, nobody on Xbox even knew it came out because it came out a year and a half after PlayStation and PC. It’s like a weird protracted effort by multiple stages on consumerism to leech the will to live out of the Xbox as a brand. Game Pass alone should be enough, yet it isn’t. It’s literally Netflix for games, as you can even cloud stream some games now like on PlayStation, except you can also download and play like 200 other games too. Plus PlayStation has crap servers compared to Microsoft for dedicated online play if you’re in the United States like me. As long as I can legacy access the games I have or get sufficient heads up to download all the games I want to be able to keep if they suddenly pull a Nintendo shop and revoke all licenses. In all likelihood, I think if Xbox went flat out of the market, Microsoft would just port the Xbox game launcher into windows or just like work out a deal across the industry to essentially transfer all the Xbox accounts to a new service that will essentially buy out the accounts from Xbox and hopefully be able to allow people to still play and access them in a new kind of launcher.

This narrative that Xbox is in trouble is good for clicks but doesn’t hold any water. The console market isn’t a zero sum game where the winner takes all. Sales numbers vs a competitor isn’t how a company gages success. Profitability is all that matters. The fact they’re not beating Sony in sales is irrelevant to Microsoft. The fact their gaming division is profitable is all that matters to them.
Brands don’t fold because they’re not the market leader. That’s a ridiculous concept.

You clearly don't know how microsoft operates then.
Either they're the monopoly, or they die trying to get a monopoly.

It's just nerds trying to further perpetuate the console wars mentality. They think that by sprinkling economics into the discourse, the sports team aspect is justified.

But is the Xbox division really holding its weight vs MSFT's other divisions? That's the real issue and frankly I'm skeptical about that.

@@lycanwarrior2137 you have to remember that they’re now hauling in all of the Bethesda and ABK money from COD and mobile games. MS is Sony’s most important third party developer at this point. The xbox division is amazingly profitable. The growth piece is what makes RUclips video headlines when it comes to console units sold. As if all these acquisitions lead to hardware sales. They don’t. They lead to profitability.
Why do they need to be the market leader in consoles when they’re already making massive profits from the Sony player base via software and PS5 hardware?

honestly the the ecosystem killed the launch so many different consoles xbox one x, xbox series s, xbox series X it was confusing because they were still continuing to support the xbox one ecosystem in the new generation which created an imbalance of why should i buy a new console and by supporting multiple platforms it reduced availability of the console people actually wanted people had to settle for the S because it was the only thing available and then games have to be a nightmare to develop for because you gotta support all of these less powerful consoles.
