They won't do this but for the love of god bring back actual community run and owned servers that can run their own scripts. Battlefield on PC died after BF4 because DICE gave in to EA's "rent a server" model where customers have at best a few customization options on a corporate lobby. The large PC community that built battlefield kept the flame burning from BF1942 all the way to BF4 by operating truly private servers that had effective anti-cheat measures designed by and enforced by fans. If DICE wants viral videos for the next battlefield, bring back private servers where users can run their own gamemodes, anti-cheat and administration.

Ignore all the issues that it launched with. That’s not the problem with the game I think it is a fundamental issue with how the game was made….Because Battlefield 2042 was designed in massive maps it’s always felt super clunky when traversing around the map… even when playing different modes with smaller maps when traveling from point to point by the time you get to wherever you’re going from where you started it feels like you’ve ran a marathon and are exhausted…. Also, when engaging opponents, It feels like the distance you were engaging at is significantly further than that of Battlefield four due to the maps feeling massive….. to sum it all up It feels like 2042 is full of players, but empty at the same time and doesn’t have what I would call a true battlefield soul.

Except battlefield 3/4 didnt completely gut the baseline systems that made a battlefield game...battlefield. I see this comparison being drawn: "every battlefield game had ossues at launch" a$ if to say 2042 shares the problems those older games had. They had those and several more due to deliberate design decisions that broke the actual gameplay. Because even with the issues 3/4 were AT THEIR CORE good battle field games in every other aspect.
2042 completely ditched class identity and had horrible maps two things critical to how people PLAY the game. You didnt have a scoreboard, you couldnt tell what character was a medic/support/engineer/enemy/ally etc bc anyone could run almost any combo of hero with Any kind of kit. All of the poor design decisions of 2042 stand out clearly comapred to the older games because Maps were and still are wide open shooting galleries and the heroes make identifying enemy and friendly players more difficult than it has to be in a masive big team pvp game.

I jumped into Battlefield around Bad Company 2 days, when that demo release on Xbox 360, it was legendary. I played that demo and that 1 map more than some games. From BC2 to BF3, BF4 - it was all legendary good times but always with some baffling decisions around each game that kind of dampened the long-term success of the game.
BC2 - still one of the best in the series. Well balanced and fun. Legendary map design.
BF3 - you could rent console servers, setting custom rotations of maps etc, rules etc etc. However EA for some reason made that custom map rotations were not able to be Ranked, which basically neutered any creativity or interesting settings you could have. You'd basically pay 30/$ month to run EA's playlists if you wanted your servers to be Ranked (aka earned progression XP and stat tracking). You also couldn't mix DLC and vanilla maps, so nobody played DLC maps for the most part.
BF4 - launch was a total technical disaster but core game was fine. At launch, levelution events on certain maps crashed the server and kicked everyone out. On consoles, half the sounds were missing on certain maps as well. In BF4, i had a very active clan of 50+ players, we had our servers, logos, etc etc. BF1 killed all of that and BF5/2142 kept everyone away from the franchise for almost a decade now.
I stopped playing around BF1 because I really didn't care for WW1 setup. BF5 was once again, not what people asked for. And well, 2142 tried to please everyone and no one at same time. 2142 had the Vault stuff with remastered maps and weapons, and they should have leaned into that big time, to bring old school players back... but it was too little too late. The series veterans weren't quite there.
I hope EA stops ignoring the battlefield vets as they have for the last 3 games, trying to chase trends. Battlefield was always its own thing.

BF4 had a bad launch yes, but it was technical problems that they fixed with time, the core BF experience was there and it had a great campaign to play. After fixing the technical issues, they went on to release heaps of awesome content + they even gave us fun easter egg content like the Megalodon, bipod knife and Phantom Project on top. So of course it's now considered by fans as one of the best of the series.
2042 not only had a horrible launch technically with bugs, crashes, server issues etc, but even when it worked the core BF gameplay experience had been drastically changed and basic features (sorry i mean "legacy features") were entirely missing. By the time they had fixed some (not all - mouse input is still trash) technical issues, re-add in removed "legacy features", rework all the launch maps because they were so bad - they had basically wasted the entire games lifecycle making it into what it should have been at launch instead of allocating the time or resources to post launch content like BF4 had. Meanwhile they dropped 1 map per season with the sneaky "TWO NEW" maps in the last season that every called them out for. The content drought was so bad in the end they had to cheat by adding in weapons and maps from Portal to beef it up. Oh and no Campaign, Hazard Zone was dropped entirely and Portal had nothing added to it post launch.

Battlefield 5 would just be an improvement on Battlefield 4, heck even the engine running the game was improving. We went from Frostbite 1 for BC2, then 2 for BF3, then 3 for BF4. So I was excited to see where it was all gonna go from there...until hardline came along. But after learning about DICE's early "Urban Combat" project that was canceled before they ultimately decided to work on BF1942, I can kinda see why they made Hardline. So to me it was just an homage to an early Battlefield prototype...so when are we gonna go back to military stuff??
I thought Battlefield 1 was cool when it first launched but I was still inching for another modern military shooter. I honestly kinda hated BF1 after while. It was cool but to me this just wasn't Battlefield, but was more like a WW1 mod for a Battlefield-esk game. Like yeah sure it looks cool, the visuals do such a good job at capturing the grittiness and almost hell-like landscape of WW1, but I don't like what they did to the class system and also I really don't like being sniped across the map. The vehicles in Battlefield 1 also kinda ruined it for me. I feel like the compromises they made to try and fit Battlefield into the WW1 is what made it feel so distant from what I used to play when I was kid. Then when Battlefield V was announced and when I heard half the fucking crowd at E3 moan and groan over Battle Royale being announced last minute like Woody from Toy Story telling everyone that Andy's brithday party was moved to today so fucking nonchalantly, I knew it was over. 2042 was just the final nail in the coffin, not for the series, but for me knowing that these people just have no idea what makes a good Battlefield game. I believe it was Gabe Newell that said "Late is for a little bit, suck is forever."
I think its fucking hilarious that so many studios are working on this new game. Like fucking EA trying to solve a fucking murder, like Jesus Christ how hard is it to not fuck up. I understand that all the veterans of DICE have moved on to work on other projects like The Finals which draws heavy influence from Battlefield, especially in the destruction. But goddamn you let these new guys fuck up so bad that they need multiple studios to piece this game together like a fucking monster. Lets just hope they end up putting together Robocop rather than The Frankenstein Monster...
To me...I'm still waiting for Battlefield 5...the one that I imagined from when I was a kid...

So consider myself a BF FB (Battlefield FanBoi) and have played for approx. 2400+ hours per release after tolerating and patiently waiting for them to fix each launch fiasco, then purchased the full Monty 2042, and literally refunded within an hour.

DICE's Battlefront 2 still disappoints me to this day. The game actually worked, the graphics were amazing, and gameplay was phenomenal. But the star cards man, and those damn microtransactions and the controversy killed what it could have been. They realized they couldn't justify 80 hours of grinding to unlock Darth Vader to the player, and forcing them into microtransactions for each character didn't work. So they removed the transactions but the star card leveling system that was left behind was broken but the devs had no option but to go with it because the old microtransaction system was so engrained into how the game worked. Fuck star cards, me and all my homies hate star cards

Boy howdy that made me think twice about ever doing it again. 2 months! 2 MONTHS before the game was playable without dropped lobbies and rag doll glitches that kept people from respawning. Funny at launch, absolutely enraging after a week of trying to play the game that was my first “lifestyle” game like today’s Fortnite. Lost hope with Dice after Hardline and the huge missed opportunity that Battlefront 1. I fully passed on Battlefront 2 because of it.

Wanted to comment this one for you lads. Played BF3/4 as a teen, BF:Hardline as a older teen, BF1 as an young adult, and BFV, and after playing 2042, it's been incredibly down hill. Bottom of the barrel, the game only got away with whatever it did because of all the previous Devs success, BF3/4 was the pinnacle and wasn't a gimmick, it made emphasis on an evolving battlefield, either a gas main exploding to unlock underground, the toppling of buildings, flooding of cities, or even ice breaking creating a water map.
I want to note before my rant: DICE Devs we remember are gone. Those people who made the game so enjoyable, who worked out the bugs and made the game so much more playable for the community, even with how gamebreaking the netcode was, they made the game fantastic, even going beyond and giving us the final days of their unreleased maps, just that little bit of polish with the Ghost protocol, loved it; But those Devs are gone, and these new ones picking up the mantle? No Love, trying to capture a long lost experience so many of us loved, but failed, when did I see a fall? Honestly late into development, specifically: Thermal Scopes, they give infinite highlighting of enemies in the game, it renders stealth impossible, which flanking is a huge deal, and while that's only part of the gameplay and game sense, it's a huge problem in my eyes.
I've played 2042 top to bottom because I paid for the ultimate edition, and know what? I regret it, I played all the seasons I paid for, got as much of my money back with time spent, and I still don't like 2042, I think I finally stopped this year since it's finally hit dead water in the experience. While BF:H broke away, I could enjoy it still, BF1 was a departure and I had gripes about QoL, and BFV was a slight return to form but rampant with cheaters it was gross (I did my research), with 2042 having really ruined me in the FPS genre, I've nearly stopped.
I think the Hype train will still hook many people, and DICE w

    Bf1 immersion.
Bf5 fortification building and crouch sprint.
2042 portal mode and plus system.
All that along with a good system of destruction for most if not all structures and if they want a fancy set piece that can only be destroyed a particular way like things on bf4 throw in a few. I also propose a squad limit increase to 5 perhaps even 6. I'm not opposed to a battlefield battle royale if it's done correctly as that would be the thing to have ftp just to draw a crowd.

While I respect Bruce’s opinion as a fellow Battlefield fiend, I disagree on the point that the franchise needs a F2P system. The first issue is the current landscape of live service games for any newcomer is very difficult. For one Helldivers 2, you have Concord, Marvel Avengers, SS Kill the Justice League, Redfall with many other examples that have a hard time breaking into that market. For a myriad of reasons but the most important one is that the established titles like Fortnite and Warzone, who are competitors in the shooter genre, already have much of the market covered. It would be extremely difficult for EA and DICE to have an actual impact on that market.
I would also like to put Warzone into some context, because its success was huge but it benefited from a few things. One was that the battle royale genre was reaching an incredible peak, with Fortnite, PUBG a few years before, Apex Legends just a year before boasting huge player counts. Call of Duty had competition but it was not as saturated as it is today. Then there’s also a bit of luck from the circumstances in which Warzone debut, the pandemic. Lockdown made it easy for people to pick up Warzone because it was a new BR by a big studio and people had a lot of time to sink in hours of play. That is not true today, where there are only so many live service games that people will have time to spend playing these games.
I will also add that there was several attempts from BF to introduce BR and borrow ideas from Tarkov but ultimately failed. The community didn’t gravitate to those ideas despite BF’s BR being a decent attempt. BF is a huge franchise but there’s a lot of scars from the past that would make it a difficult sell to players.
I’m not saying it would be impossible because some games have done it well. They just need to be extremely careful because this franchise is the need of a lifeline. Hopefully I made some sense, love the vids.

Sorry but everything EA is saying about the next battlefield is almost word for word what they said about 2042 and bf5 prior to launch. I will NEVER pre-order another BF game. Didn't even buy the last two just played a few hours of 2042 a year after launch on EA Play.
2042 was meant to be like Fortnite hence the specialists, dumb skins, and huge empty map. Then pivoting less than a year from release to try to make it a normal battlefield game is why this game felt different. This isn't the team that gave us BC2 and BF3 back to back. They're long gone so I don't trust anything until I can play it

More Destruction, Yes. Levolution, No. Levolution rendered maps to flat terrain with no cover for anything tactical and was way too easy to meet those conditions. Besides, all of what BF2042's verion of it now (wild weather conditions) stemmed from the ever increasing focus on destruction set pieces, rather than letting the players cause the destruction.

Battlefield 2 was the game that really brought battlefield in competition with the COD juggernaut. Battlefield attempted to switch to compete directly but the core gameplay of BF2 and then improve on it with BF3 was peak battlefield.
    How can they improve?
I really think they can manage the macro systems of the game. Planes and helicopters were always incredibly strong, a good pilot can own the entire server.
With such a massive battleground, mobility is important and spending 15 minutes running around before you get melted by someone, was not fun

Something that is potentially going to be new for the Battlefield franchise, and will be interesting to see play out, is the competition posed by Delta Force. I haven't played it but from everything I've seen and heard, it's classic Battlefield, it looks great, it plays well, and it's free. So it'll be interesting to see how DICE and EA respond to that with this new game. Can they get away with going back to "classic" BF after Delta Force has already done that? We'll see.

Waited for the complaints to die down and then played it for like 300 hours through game pass. These big companies use the early access model but aren't up front about it. People would probably have more patience if companies would admit they are basically releasing these huge franchises with an early access style of model but then people would expect to pay less money and that can't happen.

I think they need to avoid copying what CoD does because they just cant compete with Warzone. I want them to focus on making a good battlefield game instead of another copy of whats popular. Firestorm and Hazard zone pretty much just died and it seems like it stretched their devs because they just stopped supporting these modes. Same thing with Portal, which was probably their best new implentation that was again just ignored. Just make the multiplayer/single player campaign good and keep the focus there. If this game becomes another 2042 I don't see a bright future for the Battlefield franchise
