  • /mu/ is a 4chan board that is there to discuss music but ultimately turns into a complete mess in any thread. Today I'm taking a look at the albums that they deem to be "essential" and ranking them in a tier list!

There are a lot of fantastic records on this chart and it made it very difficult to rank! We got the obvious ones like In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective and Loveless by My Bloody Valentine but theres also some albums in there that I've never heard before that shocked me like In The Court of The Crimson King by King Crimson and Soundtracks for the Blind by Swans.
Overall listening to all these albums rank them was an absolutely incredible experience. Please let me know how you guys would rank these albums because I'm very curious!

I wouldn't say it's about depression as much as it's an album about adolescence, touching on themes of the excitement of young love and infatuation, the inevitable heartbreak and loneliness attached to it, and the longing to find one's place of belonging in this world.

Plus the fact that he was going head to head with the Beatles and (almost) winning. They put out Revolver, he put out Pet Sounds. They put out Sgt Pepper, he puts out Good Vibrations. Then he tries to make album of songs as good as 'Good Vibrations', and he has a drug induced mental breakdown. John and Paul then take the severed head of The Beach Boys and put it over the mantlepiece. Next to Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Rolling Stones, The Byrds, and all the other bands that had dared to compete with them.

@@marktaylor6491 You could say he had the last laugh though. Even if Brian couldn’t finish the album he still made great music with the band long after the Beatles broke up and well into the 70s. They deserved to be remembered as one of the greatest experimental pop groups and more than a just another act who tried to compete with the Beatles. Reaching greater heights although much less consistently

if Medicine had leaned more into the “pure noise” aspect of their music instead of jumping around to experiment with electronica and R&B, and breaking up and reforming multiple times, i like to think they probably could have come close to replicating Loveless. other bands like All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors and Fleeting Joys also approach the pure hallucinatory qualities of MBV but were never quite punishing enough to reach Shields’ level. i’d have to say i agree though. it’s sad no one else has unlocked the mystery but speaks so much to the quality of the work, even the band themselves couldn’t quite bottle the same lightning a second time.

The Sound off Soundtracks for the Blind is the single most moving piece of music I’ve ever heard in my entire life. It brought me to tears the first time I listened to it. Next time you listen to Soundtracks I think you should keep in mine what the concept is behind the album, it makes it a little bit easier to get through. Michael Gira wanted to make an album similar to Brian Eno’s Film Music, which is essentially an album for a movie that doesn’t exist. When you listen to Soundtracks you’re supposed to create the imagery yourself. When I listen to it I usually try to imagine myself traveling through some sort of wormhole with the dark ambient tracks being the foggy wormhole and the more cohesive songs being clear vivid set pieces or stories that the wormhole takes me to. Then you get sucked right back up into the darkness. It’s truly an album that exudes the most extreme positive and negative feelings. I also recommend you check out Swans Are Dead. It’s a live album that accompanies Soundtracks. The live version of Blood Promise is just as beautifully transcendent as The Sound and Helpless Child.

Very cool video. Slint is one of my favorite bands of all time and each member was involved with some pretty unique stuff outside of the Slint project. Dave Pajo has great solo work on Live From a Shark Cage and Whatever Mortal, and Brian helmed another similar project called The For Carnation, both worth checking out. For a peer into the more avant- side of music coming out around that time, US Maple, MX-80, and Storm & Stress are also very important and fun listens.

You can do a bit of googling to find some of Slint’s influences (punk and hardcore adjacent stuff like Wire and Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Leonard Cohen apparently, they covered Neil Young’s Cortez the Killer, and I think I remember hearing that they liked jazz from that documentary), but some less obvious albums that personally come to mind when I think of Spiderland (some because of the guitar or drums, their textural and evocative nature, and others that give you a religious experience) are Talk Talk - Laughing Stock, Can - Future Days, Duster - Stratosphere, Dismemberment Plan - Emergency and I, The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (namely What Goes On’s bee swarm guitar assault, the heavens are falling wait no I’m ascending ho - ly), Sun City Girls - Torch of the Mystics, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers from the Universe, Andy Boay - So So So We See/ Trenches in the Sun (this one is rare and I have no idea how I found it but I do know that he absorbed Florida sun and Animal Collective, got zoinked out of his noggin and this is the result), Sun Ra - Lanquidity, and Nick Drake - Pink Moon.
Also, Animal Collective! I witnessed them play in downtown LA at The Ace Hotel during their 2018 Sung Tongs Tour. Thank God someone had the foresight to record it and put it online, it introduced me to the Prospect Hummer EP with Vashti Bunyan and in turn her twee pastoral-folk classic Diamond Day which you should check out if you haven’t. Also before AC the members released a great Pavement inspired slow-core EP under the name Automine called Paddington Band, which reminds me of Slint and the smell of wet concrete (petrichor I believe).
Side note(s(s)), funnily enough I’m living in Kentucky a street away from the road where the Tweez album cover was taken (according to my friend (who I met in guitar class this year also funnily enough because he happened to hear me playing Breadcrumb Trail) who funnily enough met Will Oldham at a skatepark, who was in the car on the album cover, but I can’t find any information about it’s location online). When I moved here last year I remember driving across a cold KY with a grey sky above me, sedimentary rocks bordering the road, skeletal trees as far as the eye could see and Spiderland playing loud as hell sealing the deal. I’d imagine that type of energy had something to do with their sound. Fantastic album.

I know hella great records that are in that spiderland lane, most post rock n post hardcore from the 90s will give you moments of this sound. But for good recommendations, I'd say check out
-june of 44- first 2 records
-shipping news- very soon and in pleasent company
    - hood - rustic houses
    - bark psychosis
    - u.s. maple - talker
    And
    - sprain - as lost through collision

You should check out 7-11 by Black Midi, it’s a B side from their first album, and it’s a parody of a slint song (I think) but it just ends up being almost as amazing as an actual slint song

You've probably got a billion Spiderland-type recommendations but I figure I'll throw my hat in the ring
Despite its common classification as post-rock you're better off looking through slowcore stuff instead, in particular Codeine. If you want a particular album from them to jump off from, it's gotta be The White Birch.
Another album with a similar sound is Return by Deathcrash, which was just released earlier this year. Very tangible influences from both Codeine and Slint.
Something that's similar in sound but not necessarily tone would be In Place of Real Insight by Karate. Some more upbeat cuts on that one and is generally lighter in tone. Hope this helps.
