  • 4chan and Anthony Fantano sometime seems to have shaped the internet's majority consensus in regards to music. Today I'm listening to and reviewing a bunch of albums deemed "essential listening".
Let me know what you think of each of these albums:)

Very cool to see you! A 2 hour Swans album? Whew. Might be tough going. And that Profeta album is WAY better than where you rated it. I always like seeing what you're into. It broadens my own listening, and I appreciate it so much. Mahalo nui loa!

About that Beefheart album, everyone hated it on first listen, the Magic comes from realizing that it’s not the least bit random or improvised in fact it’s extremely well rehearsed and written out. The Captain was completely batshit but the band of top players did whatever he said. The combination of a band of amazing creative musicians being commandeered by a lunatic is the vibe of it. How a band was able to do this and play this precisely and repeatably with the Captain at the helm boggles my mind. I still listen to the “Frownland” song at least once a year because it’s short but does the trick. This album could have only been made in the sixties and only on Zappas label. This album by any reasonable deduction should not even exist, which is another aspect of this album that I find appealing. Great video Daniel. Thanks

@@danielprofeta thank you. Maybe the trout mask thing has to do with human pattern recognition, first time listening there is no recognizable pattern but on subsequent listening, patterns emerge. It’s a kind of brain teaser/experiment

@@genericonion6255 I came to it expecting some freaked out Dada and I got that too. You know it’s meticulously structured and written out. It sounds like free jazz but it’s not. It’s Prog. There I said it.

Just reassuring to see things have seemingly normalized after a rocky few days (so it appears). And a tier list! The inside knowledge many of these obscure (to me) albums shows how much you have raced at breakneck speed past me in the total scope of music acumen in the past two years. And that's ok, I enjoy being the student :)

Hello Daniel! Good to see you! Well I really enjoyed your analysis of these albums. You make me want to journey into the unknown. I'm all for King Crimson. Lots of fun stuff for your senses. I like your honesty but you really got to give some slack to that Profeta album;)

    I have this issue.
When I listen to an album, I mostly love it and return to it for months, and im so used to see it praised that when i see something negative about the album, im now inclined to never listen to it again for a long time. Not being able to accept other opinions is terrible for me

Paper Skies is a genre defining album, of a genre that is yet to be defined. It was a good list. Two late Nineties albums that deserve more love are “Soft Bulletin” by Flaming Lips and “Glee” by Bran Van 3000, the latter never gets talked about but everyone I played it for back then went and bought a copy. “Fear of Music” and “ More Songs…” are better than “Remain” except for that one song and so is “Speaking in Tongues” but I do love Eno “ Another Green World” gets the accolades but the next album “ Before and After Science” is a bit better. All of Enos seventies albums are great with some amazing tracks on the first two as well. I agree Neutral Milk is top level.

@@danielprofeta I think Rock writers need something to write about and with this album there is alot to say about it, not just lyrics but the music could be written about because of personel and genre blending etc. plus they made an experimental album right at the time when everyone expected a more mainstream album full of radio hits. It did have one huge hit. If you listen to artists like Fela Kuti you can hear where they were going with this. It was one of those records you had to be really tuned into what was happening on the cutting edge of contemporary trends to appreciate. All that stuff makes for a good music article and it flatters the writer who appears very hip with all this low hanging fruit.

came for the dhmis, stayed for the /mu/core. i go back and forth on fear of music and remain in light, the latter is certainly more accessible and i think it has some of their most thoughtful lyrics and the fully developed afrobeat influence gives it a strong edge. fear of music is a work of art - i kind of think it's better on average but remain in light has some really knockout individual songs. also animals makes me irrationally angry. also i have never finished trout mask replica but it made me laugh so it's gotta be doing something right. never heard of paper skies either, will check it out - thanks!
