I've had this video in my watch later for a bit and I've finally watched it. The video is straight forward but I can't get enough of it all. It's very charming, from the non-focusing camera to your interesting insights on the music shown, I really enjoyed it all. I'm about to watch your vinyl collection video next but I hope you find the desire to start uploading again. Maybe a video on your Spotify Wrapped? CD Collection? Favorite albums? Idk, I subbed and liked!!
On my repeated listens to Deathconciousness I just keep loving it more and more. I've gone to the point where it's probably on my top 3 of all time. It's atmosphere has no parallel, there are no dull moments (for me), and the melodies underneath the lofi distortion are pure earworms.
Amazingly written, you're making me wanna go re-listen to it now 😭
@@PeterBarkerMusic Your mood and mindset when listening to the album amplifies it's power 20 fold. I remember my first listen was of indifference and I stopped on the first few tracks, however on future listens it clicked, and the warm comfortable and depressive gloomy blackness that Deathconciousness had to offer finally engulfed me and it has never left since.
With a post punk backbone, Deathconciousness blends shoegaze, post rock, industrial, doom, and drone, so perfectly that their influences are become indistinguishable. The emotion from I get from the album is really relatable to me, so I don't particularly expect everyone else to feel the same, but I will say when listening to Deathconciousness, it's very true to it's name.
The cherry on top of it all would be the closer, Earthmover. It's what the entire experience was building up to, and it wraps up the album with what I could only compare to the collapse of the universe. Despite sharing the lofi quality of the rest of the album, it sounds so different from everything leading to it, like bells chiming in the center of a galaxy. It is the epitome of THE END put into music form, from an album that already feels larger than life yet amateur and humble. There's a reason why Earthmover is always the final song in every live show HANL has done.

@@pepperbytez8128 had a similar experience. listened to fist three tracks. was like yeah. shits sounds good. i like this. petered out on fourth. kinda forgot about it. then i got corona on christmas. layed in my bed sick as fuck. sweating. coughing. feeling like death. listened to the album for three days straight. just hit different in that state.

As much as I deeply love Aeroplane over the Sea, I wouldn't call it "the best album ever!!" Its definitely one of my S tiers though, and my dear favorites. And for me why I love it is because the insane fun chaotic music, the concept, and that pure emotion in Jeff Magnum's voice. He sounds like he's really singing till his heart comes out. Even though I had no idea what he was talking about in the first listen, something with the music and his voice just made me swell and felt so emotional.
Im not evem mad though that it doesnt click with you, since i can understand 100% why someone wouldnt like this xD The chords are basic, the vocalist might not be for everyone, the sound and the lyrics make no sense at first glance.
No matter what though i'll really love it 🥺
This album has grown on me a lot since I made this video! Tracks like Oh Comely and King of Carrot Flowers Pt I hit with me as soon as I listened to it, but others have stood out to me more as time has gone on. I do get the hype around it now, and honestly I think I kinda got it when I made the video; I was just tryna be a little bit controversial 😂 I still don't really feel the "best album ever" type stuff though - to me, it's just an example of a great record amongst a sea of great records from the 90s.
I still don't know if it lands as one of my absolute all-time favourites, but maybe if I tried to make a list it would be somewhere in the top 100-150, which means I love it. :)

I think what makes Aeroplane such an incredible record, to me at least, is just how RAW it is with grief. That last track is probably the most tearjerking portrait of loss I’ve ever heard. It’s not the most deep thing in the world or the most layered or any of that. But it makes up for it in emotion.
I interpret it as a man playing some songs to his deceased lover who was brutally murdered during world war II. It’s playing off the Anne Frank theory a bit, but less specific.

Yeah, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea never really did it for me. I'm glad people like it, don't get me wrong, but it has never done it for me, no matter how many times I try to go back to it and "get it."

Deathconciousness is one of my favorite albums, though at the beginning I didn’t get and actually hated it, but I personally would put it an A, also imo Homogenic is overrated, it wouldn’t come as no surprise that I’m in the Vespertine and Post camp

I feel like for me, the lyricism on In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is my favorite aspect, the way Jeff tackles love death genocide (specifically the holocaust which affects me a lot as a Jew) sexual abuse, isolation... Generally a lot of subjects is just amazing and really touched me, I cried several times listening to this album. I feel like you should try to read more into the lyrics. You also did not talk enough about the production and orchestration of the album that are also major aspects of it that in my opinion no other album in history has done as good (maybe Pet Sounds)

@@icehot900Where do you live? Because as strange as it sounds, the place you live really adds to the experience. I like in a somewhat rural town and this album just really suits the cool overcasty weather. If I lived in a warm place I definitely wouldn't get it as much.

Great question - I'd probably say Ants From Up There (obvious pick). Lot of great records this year though; Aethiopes, Cheat Codes, Dragon New Warn Mountain, Mr Morale, Melt My Eyez and Diaspora Problems all very close :)
