You guys have literally transformed my Wednesday mornings. Such a blast getting to revisit this show with you and all the fans. Thank you so much for doing this!
agreed, as a father of 3 girls I have seen much higher degrees of craziness over much smaller issues. You are a nerd who has one thing that you love and they give it to the cheerleader who already gets stuff handed to her on a daily basis, justified emotion to a teenage girl.
I was going to say the same! I was 15 years old when this episode aired… Chloe’s reaction was right on. 😂 I fully related to her irritation with Lana. 😅
@Skynet1 This is because minors are only allowed on the set for a certain amount of time, not allowed to do certain scenes, and not allowed to be around guns (the actor in the umbrella academy Aidan Gallagher when he started the season was 15 years old wasn't allowed to be in the same room when his stunt double when he was doing his gun scenes)
My take on this has always been Lex had a extremely regimented upbringing, his reasoning for seemingly being on hand for highschoolers was his keen interest in Clark, it allowed him to live vicariously through them, and finally he likes to study human interactions as we all know he must develop a near superhuman understanding of the human pysche in order to be able to counter Clarks supernatural powers (understanding all that takes place in the future), but its still relevant to his (Lex's) origins story.
I personally love that Michael is a critic and Tom is more optimistic with Ryan to balance it out as a first time viewer. I know its not always going to be Michael being a critic etc but it just feels so fitting giving the casting roles and just how seemingly effortless your friendship has blossomed over the years from the making of Smallville.
Yes 👍. That is the purpose. To say the truth about what you really feel about the episodes. I kind of always found Chloe very annoying for scenes like these. She had a lot throughout the whole show. I like how Michael expresses exactly what I feel not only here but on his opinions on his other podcast InsideYou.
Michael, we want to see you being proud of the show and your acting, you know why? ‘Cause it’s freaking great! It lasted 10 seasons and it became a cult classic and here we are 21 years later watching you and Tom reminiscing about it and loving it. So yeah, be proud of it, man, because you earned it. Love ya
I agree. Michael made this Lex not only my favourite Lex but also my favourite villain - I never ever root for the bad guy and I block my empathy but with Lex I can't. Yes, I love Superman, he's my favourite superhero, but (as awesome as Tom was as Clark) it was Lex who made me hooked on the Smallville series. Even knowing how it ends in general, I kept coming for the next episodes hoping to see more good in Lex.
seriously. Rosey is BY FAR the best Lex Luthor. Like, I don't think he really appreciates how good his depiction of the character was. I mean, Gene Hackman played the character sort of like the Golden Age version which was this grandiose, mustache-twirling super criminal who refers to himself as the world's greatest criminal mastermind in the films. He was basically Moriarty to Reeves Superman/Holmes in that regard. Rosey's Lex was a far more believable, nuanced and relatable villain - the kind that doesn't think themselves as the villain, but rather the people's champion. THAT'S Lex Luthor. At least the more modern interpretation. And Rosey was f'n BRILLIANT in bringing Lex to life.
couldn't resist adding another comment... watching this one now. Nice to see Tom finally get the hang of speaking "into" the mike. He sounds great. Michael has an incredibly smooth voice, perfect for podcasting.
The reason Clark’s clothes rarely get damaged, in some areas of Superman lore, is because he has an invulnerability aura that extends beyond his body several millimeters. Essentially, making the clothes invincible to damage to a degree. Jackets damage because of the thickness or distance from the body exceeds aura limits.
I like Rossenbaum's critiques, makes it more of an honest take, I love smallville and as a fan I have critiques of my own, that's normal, having only a positive take all the time is so fake, this show feels more organic because Micheal and Tom are being honest with their takes, that's why I enjoy it, keep it up Rosie
When it's warranted absolutely. But initially he wanted to give Rogue 1/2 a rose which is less than Craving. 😄 Which is ironically an episode most of the fanbase trashed for 12+ years until Amy got famous. LOL Opinions are subjective. But the majority of the fanbase considers Rogue a standout of the series. Many people in the FB thread were saying Rogue is one of their favorite eps of the whole show and the best ep of S1. **So I'm still in shock that he considers it on par with Bug Boy and weaker than Craving. 👎 I was actually thinking that it would get at least a 2-2.5 across. Especially from Ryan who trashed it pretty heavily as well.
I actually like the dynamic where Michael sees the "dark" while Tom reminiscises over the "good" because it kind of emulates their roles on the show with villains dn hero thing. It would definitely suck if all they did was sh🤬t on show... which they don't.
Please don't stop doing "damn, who's that" , it's hilarious each time. I imagine Sam Jones III joins to the stream and everybody "damn, who's that?" and he probably have no clue it's about his character.
Everybody knows Drug dealers..especially short, Afro American sidekicks of Dooperman Clarkie Kent. Sj3 sold so many OxyContin he is a legend in Hollywood.
Ryan was on the spot about chloe. She's a teenager with all these insecurities and fears, early chloe always seemed to be supressing her deepest feelings. So for me it made perfect sense that she would freak out about both losing her dream job and the space where she can get near the guy she likes
Especially to Lana who she is not very close to yet and knows Clark is infatuated with. I thought it was pretty accurate to how a 15 year old would react. I guess it can be a bit jarring because the characters act beyond their years so often lol. Lana ends up the GM of a business while going to high school haha
@@seanwarner9893 I mean I do understand Chloe taking offense in the sense of, the principal specifically fired her and had suspicions of the torch, but when it was Lana, for whatever reason he was like "yeah go ahead" lol. Which might be slightly creepy... pretty privilege...? idk. But yes, not only was Chloe struggling with losing Clark to Lana, but she was also losing her passion to Lana. This all probably made her feel like, "what's wrong with me? Why am I not good enough?" So I get it.
I always enjoyed clark and lanas adoption talks. Being adopted myself, and not knowing anyone else who was adopted, this always touched me. Like confirming some of my emotions with being adopted
When John Byrne reinvented Superman in the 80's he explained a very small "force field" about half an inch off of Clark's skin. Which explains why his skintight costume never tears. His cape did though!
Byrne explored this aspect of Clark well before his run on Superman. He did it through a Superman proxy character in Marvel named Gladiator. None other than Reed Richards figured out that Superman/Gladiator's powers were as much mental as physical, and he had, as outlined above, an aura to not just protect him and his clothes from harm, but also those he is saving- hence if Superman is holding someone in a building on fire and flies through a wall, he doesn't pulp that person because he is unconciously extending that aura around his immediate vicinity. In the Superman comics in the 90's they gave it a name: Tactile Telekinesis. The scenic route to "Clark's clothes are fine". 🤣
Here’s my take on a few of the scenes that you guys were talking about: Michael, I think Chloe’s overreaction had more to do with the fact that it was Lana taking over The Torch; had it been anyone else, she would’ve been upset but not seen it as a threat. You have to remember that in her mind, Lana was already taking Clark from her and now she was stealing the one other thing Chloe loved. I completely understood her reaction because she was blinded her by emotions and unable to think clearly in the moment. As for the scene where Clark was so aggressive with Lex, who was just trying to help, I took that as Clark wanting to protect Lex. His father had tried to help and look where that got them. Now here’s Lex wanting to get involved and Clark is very adamant about Lex staying out of it because he doesn’t want Lex to end up being hurt by Phelan. He can’t let anyone else get involved and his fear is making him come across as aggressive. Anyway, those were the thoughts I had while watching the scene. I’m still really loving this weekly discussion!
@@TalkVillePodcast @mangerinegirl I think its easy to forget these characters are TEENAGERS and going to be more emotional and more hormonal than adults would be in these situations. Mainly because obviously these actors were not actual high schoolers at the time of filming they were already adults in their 20's (as far as I'm aware anyway)
Right? It's really hard to remember because the actors are in ther 20s 😂but these characters are supposed to be around 15. When I was 15, I overreacted exactly like this to way smaller stuff. From Chloe's perspective, Lana is the girl who gets everything - popularity, everyone's (most importantly Clark's) obsession with her, etc - handed to her on a silver platter. But the Torch is *Chloe's* thing, her passion, something she gets to be proud of, something she defines herlsef by, and then BAM! - it gets handed to LANA as well! For no reason other than Lana just being there (again, from Chloe's point of view). After all the work Chloe had put into it! And the Clark factor didn't help as well. It's not Lana's fault, not remotely, but I totally get why Chloe would feel furious and betrayed and would just let all those not so deeply buried feelings burst out. I remember feeling like this VIVIDLY when I was young.
26:52 - I interpreted Jonathan telling Clark “I need you to be strong” via appearing to be weak. He knows Clark’s weakness is when he gets emotional and thereby potentially losing control over his abilities. By reminding him to be strong emotionally, Clark can remember to suppress his power and not only prevent anyone from getting hurt unintentionally, but more importantly, intentionally. We get to see a glimpse into Jonathan’s lessons that Man of Steel portrayed such as “you have to decide what kind of man you want to be Clark”.
I think the point where Chloe "lost it" towards Lana becoming editor, that makes sense. Not only is The Torch Chloe's thing, and not only are they young and so perhaps more emotional, keep in mind this .... Lana and Chloe are NOT really friends yet. They have both been in Clark's orbit, and they are friendly towards one another, but they are not really friends at this stage.
The Torch was Chloe's Identity so to speak and she felt threatened by Lana just seemingly waltzing in and taking it over! Maybe a bit over the top, but High School students fight over less at least in the movies and TV. Don't even get me started on Whitney whom my daughters and I nicknamed "Whit less" the actor does a great job, but the character still annoys me! Probably because my family is totally Team Clark!!
Yeah as a former teenage girl, who was not very rational- this tracks! You guys keep using grown man logic on girlhood things. Chloe, continues to be irrational and it makes sense 😂
Huge Smallville fan. Michael, your version of Lex is easily my favorite depiction of the character. Tom, it is impossible for me to not see you as Clark in any of the other shows you're on. Seeing you on Lucifer was incredible, and I absolutely loved yours and Erica Durance's cameo in the CW"s Crisis on Infinite Earth's. Please keep giving us your honest opinion about the show. Besides the obvious fact that I'm watching a podcast with Lex Luthor and Clark Kent, it was the idea of hearing how your opinions of stuff that really interested me in the watching the podcast. Keep up the excellent work, and thank you for existing.
20 years ago I was walking by a random playground in Zaragoza, Spain, and some teen girls had scratched "Tom Welling is the best!" into the paint on the railing, in English. You guys made a big impact and you still do.
I must be weird I watched it last night and thought the Chloe and Lana stuff was more interesting than the dirty cop. LOL...I loved the scene where Chloe admitted that the paper was the one thing she felt like Clark and her still had in common. And then Lana was like "oh if you like Clark, I won't stand in your way." and then Chloe was like "no we're just friends" and Lana was like "well Clark and I are just friends too"...So much lying to one another and themselves!
I'm with you! I think they need more female guests. They see the stunts and guy stuff, which I like too but I'm still a romantic at heart and like those parts that u mentioned!
Rogue is so underrated and doesn't get enough love. It's the best ep of S1 and one of the best of the whole show. Here's my top 10 reasons why : 1) Bus - Best practical effect of the show. 2) "I can't see myself going into battle with that on my chest" was a GREAT and hilarious Supeman reference. 3) Lex's psychology of conquering and seeing the world in "gray" was shown. 4) Kelly Brook was arguably the hottest female guest star and her chemistry with Mike is on fire. 5) Phaelon was a great non FOTW protagonist and one of the best villains. 6) Tom's acting with the anger scenes was so good. 7) The bullet time was well done. 8) It had emotional moments with Clark and his folks. Especially Johnathan telling Clark to ctrl his temper with the prison scene. 9) You get to see Clark think on his feet and use intelligence. 10) The cliffhanger ending with Lex seeing the blur on the computer was the perfect close out.
I love Michael being critical about the episodes, where Tom finds the best in them, it's a great balance to dissect every episode that we all fans are looking forward to know ♥️
Loved the bus scene. Also loved how we get to see how desperate Lex was to find out Clark’s secret when he asked what Phelan had on Clark. We really get to start seeing his obsession with Clark’s secret despite being his friend.
Corrupt detective who takes advantage of Clark Kent's abilities so good. Seeing an episode dealing about corruption is a nice change of scenery for Clark Kent. To see a grounded type story was quite good.
I love when Tom flips Michael some shit about his character or his acting ability. It's obvious they have been very good friends for a long time. Interestingly, they have chosen a project(Talk Ville), if successful, will keep them working together for for more years. I hope so. Also I appreciate your (select)objectivity, Michael. Allison was superb in and elevated everything she did. Small nuance stuff- side glances and fidgeting. Head and shoulders above her talented young costars.
Y’all had me cracking up hard about Jonathan being out of prison so quickly at the end, just popping up in the kitchen.🤣 Lol! Love the chemistry between you 3. I am a big fan of IOY podcast as well and I love that Ryan has become such an integral part of this too. The episodes get better and better every week. This one felt very “light” and so enjoyable. Thanks for making it! I even talked my dad into watching this. I’m 30 & he is 56. It’s very nostalgic for us both because I grew up watching it with my family. What a gift to have this, getting to discuss it weekly with my dad. I know I’ll treasure these moments, always. Love & blessings to y’all!
Loved this episode, you got to see Clark’s personality come through when he made a choice to drop the safe on Falen’s car and then have to deal with the consequences of his decision. Love the show guys!
For this episode, its greatness was because we get to see teenage Clark struggle with villains who threatened his loved ones before he becomes the incorruptible superhero in the comics. Johnathan Kent's "I need you to be strong" to the most powerful man on Earth is super grounding for Superman's character, as well as Johnathan's worried voice when Clark said he wanted to kill the cop.
Really digging the honest analysis and bts of this episode. Glad to know I am not the only one who found this episode a bit different/challenging to watch..Loved hearing about the bus , bullet and fireplace scenes. Tom’s analysis of Lex’s love life=spot on. 🤣🤣Thanks for answering my question . You guys are the best! ❤️❤️Please keep being you and don’t let one negative comment bring you down. You guys are authentic and love your banter. Keeps me tuning in every week. Really appreciate ya. 🙏🏻❤️
Smallville isn't just a Tv show, is a lifestyle!! I use to listen the same soundtrack bands/singers until nowadays. ... I took Jonathan Kent advices and etc... Thanks Michael/Tom For the best show of my life ❤️🇧🇷
I recently found out about this podcast and I'm loving it ! Big fan of the show, I'm enjoying every moment of listening to it. I'm excited I have so many podcast episodes to binge to
Thank you guys, for previous week surprise, Al & Miles. One of my biggest wishes is already fulfilled😁❤. Now, we need David Nutter and Greg Beeman. "Rogue" was a strong episode. I was annoyed by the guest star... Not because of bad acting, he was good...It's the character... Phelan was soooo dirty, so vicious, bigger villain than all freaks 😅 together. I mean, he put Clark through so much. Tom's performance was great, especially scene when he confronted Phelan in the house. It was so real, you could feel his anger!Special effects were astonishing!Talk Ville is getting more, and more exciting!
I like how honest you all are. I like how Tom is questioning if he defends the show or not. I think Tom, just as Clark, sees the good in things. he looks at the show from a youthful eyes and it's nice. while Michael is looking at this from a critic eyes, which is cool too. on the other hand, Ryan was forced to watch the show, while clearly he doesn't think highly of it, and it's not even nostalgic for him. but it will grow on him, it can't be otherwise.
I watched some of Smallville as a kid - the first season was on TV when I was somewhere in the end of primary school. And just weeks ago I decided to watch it from the beginning when I noticed it on Prime and then days ago I discover you started this podcast. Perfect timing! I'll get to go through it with you :)
This was the first time I noticed the difference in the color of “Angry Clark” eyes and regular Clark’s eyes. “Angry Clark’s” eyes appear to be a very steely cold and icy green. I wonder if that effect is accomplished with a change in lighting ?
Love having these discussions to listen to each Wednesday. I just started back rewatching the show with my oldest daughter and she is hooked. Wish we had more episodes each week but the wait and see is parallel to watching the show back in the day. Love it guys. Thanks from a fan to a Dad to Fam Fans
This is perfect! I’m doing a re-watch, as well, with my 11 year old daughter watching thru for her first time, and it’s been wonderful. Watching her reactions, her questions, etc. It’s wonderful.
I know this was a year ago but I like Michael's critiques. The positives are great to hear too and I love that Tom brings that positive outlook. The juxtaposition is what makes it work.
Another great episode - thank you so much for doing this! One thing not discussed - as Phelan was dying, Lex tried to get him to tell what he had on Clark. Very telling on Lex's overly curious character.
Anyone watching the show, both then and now, would be lying to themselves if they said there weren't any obvious shortcomings. We can all critique something and still love it, in fact, criticism often comes from a place of love. An honest analysis is always appreciated! 👍
When it's warranted absolutely. But Rogue has traditionally been a hailed as a standout of the series and often the best ep in S1. So it was quite shocking to see Mike initially rate it lower than Craving and on par with Bug Boy. LMAO In the FB announcement almost every comment said "one of my all time favorite episodes" or "best episode of S1". So logically I don't understand the hate that Mike and Ryan had. 🤷♂️
Not watching along with them sadly cause poor timing on my part. I have the all 10 seasons box set and binged it a few months ago. Then less than a week later talkville started, I had no idea it was coming haha. Though seeing as they’re doing one a week I’m sure in like a years time I’ll want to to do a rewatch and just stop to where they’re up to.
I appreciate how critical Michael is of the storylines. He’s NOT shitting on the show, he’s just stirring an honest discussion about the things that worked and the things that didn’t (for him). And. Michael, you were right about Phelan appearing in a later episode (Zero), in a flashback scene.
These discussions of each Smallville episode is wonderful to hear. Just hearing you guys dissect each scene in an episode giving your view points as to what could've improved is a nice fresh take. Also getting more special guest stars and hearing what they thought about the episodes is another great addition.
When I first saw this, I literally had teary eyes cause I am a huge fan of Smallville. I am glad you decided to do this, Clark and Lex. Thank you so much.
Great episode! I was in my late teens/early 20s when Smallville was airing. Re-watching the episodes now as a parent has been an EXPERIENCE. I felt all of Jonathan Kent's emotional journey, as a parent who'll do anything to protect their child. A brilliant performance by John Schneider.
Finally catching up on the episodes after having a few months of craziness and no time to watch... Love the show thanks for doing this guy... Although I have to say Michael, You could not possible understand Chloes reaction since you have never been a teenage girl! haha.. Allisons acting was spot on! .. I think Girls and Women loved her character because they could totally relate to her in the highschool years and insecurities.. She was my favorite female character, it was awesome watching Chloe grow into the character that she became in the end ... You guys rock thanks for the entertainment!
One of my favorite episodes! We get more insight into Lex's backstory, hints about Jonathan's unhealthy temper, and the greatest fears of Martha and Jonathan in that if discovered, Clark would be exploited
Found Inside of you this year from the Joel Mchale interview and couldn’t stop thinking “why does he sound so familiar” before realizing THATS LEX AND THE FLASH! I was a huge nerd growing up and shows like these gave me so much comfort. Smallville was the show I would watch with my mom and grandparents every week it came on so it’s really cool as an adult to know be able to hear the leads of the show talk about what making it was like. I look forward to it every Wednesday keep up the great work y’all!
I liked the first scene where Lex and Clark talks about the shield of Alexander the Great, it looks like the shield of Superman. The effect of the bus was so epic, it definitely holds after 21 years. It's amazing to me that the barn is so open and exposed that everyone can enter. Why would the police give lex open the "bomb"? it was so weird to me. The slow motion in the bullet scene was so great, I like that Clark starts to be more aware of his powers. Lex begins to suspect Clark more bit by bit… I love Al comments. It's really interesting to hear from the creator of the show about the episodes! I will give the episode a 🌹
Tom Welling love that you are enjoying re-watching Smallville I think after all these years and hearing the way you talked about it, with so much blacked out at the time, which we all understand you took your life so you could make one on TV for us. Just glad you're finally getting to see it from our perspective love the rewatch guys keep them coming we'll be there every week!
I am completely digging getting back into SV and LOVE your comments, memories, even your critiques of yourselves from back in the day! SV, to me, IS THE most awesome SM origin series. Even through it hasn't been deemed as "canon", it will always be considered canon to me and many other SM/SV fans! Keep up the awesomeness!
Another very enjoyable episode! The Phelan plot had a "darker, more grown-up" feel, which worked for me, because Clark seems very young and vulnerable in the orbit of this corrupt cop. And always enjoy Lex's obsessive pursuit of the mysteries of Clark!
You're absolutely right Michael, the best part about this podcast is getting to hear what you and Tom really think of the show; the good and the bad. Don't start sugar-coating it!
“El” is one of the Hebrew names for a god and also means “might” and “strength”. The reason so many characters are named with LL in Smallville is because so many characters were named LL in Superman comics. This goes back to the creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Jewish heritage.
They give constructive criticism, it good!!!! I love that I can learn what was going on behind the scenes, that I can lead from the perspective of the actors who brought the characters to life, and that they call out the plot holes or things that were not well thought through because some parts pull the viewer out, and they are noticeable. Love this podcast
Tom's view that Clark is more or less the "freak of the week" was spot on. I was thinking that right before he said it... Also, Michael's critique of the show makes perfect sense... when it's something you worked on or it's something you created you're always going to be very critical of it. Especially if you're a perfectionist... it'll always feel like you could have done a better job even if your work appears perfect.
The bullet-time scene sounded great in Dolby Surround - the bullet pans from left to right then, WHOOSH! down the centre. I had a kick-ass home cinema set-up in 2001 and Smallville gave it a good workout. I used to record the show from broadcast TV (Channel 4 in the UK)
Appreciate all of the compliments about Alison Mack. She was one of my favorite characters in the entire series and Alison was phenomenal in the role. Glad you guys aren't referring to her tragic personal problems.
For me the Best season 1 episode right here. Forget the B story with the Lana and Chloe, Rogue has got so many layers: - Kent family dynamic, their greatest fears realised, Clark's biggest challenge so far, played by an actor who hits all the right notes for a dirty cop. - Lex feeling rejected by Clark when offering to help. - Lex obsession with Clark just took another twist. Great little cliffhanger at the end with the blur speeding away. Loving the trip down memory lane. Keep up the great work!
I truthfully love how antalitical as well as critical Michael and Tom are. Especially with this particular episode. It's great to hear their perspectives of how the episodes look/feel because they were the ones who worked behind the scenes of the episode in regards to the acting. So it's good to see them point things out about scenes/moments which makes it more intersting. And I understand them being critical of themselves/work because as others said artists can be particularily critical of their work, but so can everyone else, even I am critical of my work. But, more so artists. Despite all that Rosey should be proud of his work/time as Lex, because he proud so many new layers to this version.Who was more cunning, smart, well read, didn't see himself as villian, but I believe wanted to be a hero early on and genuinly I also believe cared for Clark as a brother, even after turning and fully becoming Clark's enemy. Most certainly without doubt the best version of Lex Luthor.
I'm glad that Tom and Michael can look back on Smallville with fond memories. It really is a joy hearing their honest thoughts and getting a new perspective on a show I am a fan of.
What an episode! Clark Kent almost goes 'Rogue' with anger. The episode very nicely depicts that even the strongest man can become a victim of his weaknesses. Thank goodness Clark has a father like Jonathan who teaches him self-control and humility. I liked Tom's performance in this one very much. He is officially my favourite younger Clark while Late Mr. Christopher Reeve being my all-time favourite Clark/Superman. And as I said in my previous Jitters comment, we get to see the other side of Lex who while being a 'friend' also wants to uncover Clark's truth. Michael and Tom just keep getting better and better with every Smallville episode. The podcast was equally enjoyable. It's a real treat to watch Michael & Tom talking to each other and having so much fun! Keep up the good work.
About the clothes not ripping... in some iterations of the character, Superman has an invisible aura around that protects his suite and clothes, that's why he hardly ever breaks his Superman suite, remember that in some iterations the Superman suite was made by Martha Kent with just regular clothing material and used the coat that kept baby Kal El through the depths of space to make the cape.
Phelan. This bad cop who threatens and blackmails teen Clark is truly creepy! And the scene where Clark goes to visit his father in jail and tells him "I was protecting you and mom", it moves me every time. Clark is the future Superman, right, but right now he's just a teenager with super powers, but still a boy with the heart and soul already aimed at protecting human beings and especially those he loves more than himself like his parents and friends. This is the demonstration that it's not the Hero who makes the Man but it's the Man who makes the Hero! Great episode. Thank you guys for this new episode of Talk Ville. I loved every moment, as always. Tom and Michael youre great.❤❤❤
I absolutely LIVE for the small superman references. Espeically when clarks like 'I wouldn't wear that' or seeing him in red and blue all the time. It scratches the itch of this is who superman was before he become the symbol.
What's awesome is Rosenbaum voicing Lex Luthor in "The Great Brain Robbery" in Wally West's body while playing Lex Luthor in Smallville. That was so meta back in 2006. Clancy Brown doing Rosey's Wally West impression is just hilarious in Justice League Unlimited.
I'm all kinds of sick; perforated eardrum, sinusitis, bronchitis, on all kinds of antibiotics. I wanted to thank Ryan, Michael, and Tom for making these podcasts. It's making me feel better when I am an sick.
I mean with the whole “L” thing you could probably trace it back to comic books loving alliterative names (Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Lois Lane, Wally West). 😂 Love the podcast btw!!!
Although the fact that there were many with LL was something surprising to even the comic book creators, they didn't realize it until so many years later.
I love the fact that Michael really critiques each episodes it shows that he cares a lot about and respects the quality of each episode! Same with Tom how he is able to look back and give these episodes good reviews on average because of the show’s amazing heart! Love this podcast! Love you guys!
I love Rogue. They dynamic of Clark's powers being used against him was great. My favorite episodes were when everything around Clark seemed real, as it made his powers stand out more.
When you think about it, that Detective really had a set of brass tacks. He see's a guy stop a bus with nothing but himself, seeks to verify it with his own eyes by dropping an engine block on him and then seeks to *extort* this guy? For all he knew Clark could have torn him literally a part with his bare hands and bury bits of him all over his corn field.
This Podcast is the cherry on the cake you guys are offering to all the fans around the world ! I can wait to watch all the podcast and especially the ones about the latest seasons !
I never could have imagined there would be a Smallville podcast 16 years later especially this year which was the worst and best year. This podcast has already become a highlight of my week and has provided an escapism to my teenage years watching my favorite show. Appreciate the POV of Michael and Tom especially now as a so-called adult. Thanks you three!❤
Honestly I think one of the best effects in smallville was the super speed so Clarke dodging bullets in “slow motion” was super good! I mean “bullet time”. Cool name
That made me laugh! Micheal, I love that you are a critic. I'm watching because of that and I often agree with you. This gives authenticity to the podcast. Keep it up and thanks for doing this!
The name thing is super common in comics. Marvel: Peter Parker, Betty Brant, Bruce Banner, Reed Richards, etc. I think there is something where the names just stick on your mind. I noticed as time went on, less characters were named this way. I think the X-Men barely did it. But yeah, a lot of early Marvel, DC and Archie comics created names like that.
That's a great idea! You guys should bring on Erica... Michael and Ryan haven't seen the show either so it'd be interesting to hear Erica's thoughts because she was part of the casting process and casted people on the show in the early seasons so it works! Fantastic idea!
You guys have literally transformed my Wednesday mornings. Such a blast getting to revisit this show with you and all the fans. Thank you so much for doing this!
Thanks for joining along bud ❤️
in our side of the world, wednesday evenings. High five fellow smallville fan 🖐️

Wednesday afternooner. I'm normally watching around 2 or 3pm for my upload. I watch the show at one and follow it up with the podcast.
Same here! This is the best part of the week!
As a former teenage girl, let me tell you, the scene of Chloe just busting out in tears is pretty true to life.
Haha fair enough ❤️
agreed, as a father of 3 girls I have seen much higher degrees of craziness over much smaller issues. You are a nerd who has one thing that you love and they give it to the cheerleader who already gets stuff handed to her on a daily basis, justified emotion to a teenage girl.

get Allison Mack on here!!!!!!! God damn she was so hot, she still is.
I was going to say the same! I was 15 years old when this episode aired… Chloe’s reaction was right on. 😂 I fully related to her irritation with Lana. 😅
“It’s a show about HS kids and this old, bald guy that comes around”. Tom had me cracking up with that 😂
HS kids who look 25 😂
@@Raelis23 Legal reasons I imagine, much easier for them not having a third party like the families involved
@Skynet1
This is because minors are only allowed on the set for a certain amount of time, not allowed to do certain scenes, and not allowed to be around guns (the actor in the umbrella academy Aidan Gallagher when he started the season was 15 years old wasn't allowed to be in the same room when his stunt double when he was doing his gun scenes)
@skyneta1a thats.. .exactly whats happening here Kristen was like 18 or 19 in season 1 lol. Playing a 14 year old.
I know its not always going to be Michael being a critic etc but it just feels so fitting giving the casting roles and just how seemingly effortless your friendship has blossomed over the years from the making of Smallville.
true i am really curious what he will think of the later seasons after he left the show
Yeah he seems to hate a lot of episodes .. BUT he seems to like a lot too.. It's very divisive. And Tom's there just like "I liked the lighting?" LOL
Love ya
Right he’s a bit hard on himself! He was a young guy who was freshly starting out✨🤍
You can be proud and critical. They aren’t mutually exclusive
Agreed, but he could be a little less critical and a little more proud because both the show and his acting deserve it.
couldn't resist adding another comment... watching this one now. Nice to see Tom finally get the hang of speaking "into" the mike. He sounds great. Michael has an incredibly smooth voice, perfect for podcasting.
The "Damn, who's that?" callback has me crying laughing 😂😂😂
Whos that?
Merch worthy
EXACTLY!
Thanks bud
When it's warranted absolutely. But initially he wanted to give Rogue 1/2 a rose which is less than Craving. 😄 Which is ironically an episode most of the fanbase trashed for 12+ years until Amy got famous. LOL
Opinions are subjective.
This would be so awesome! 🤪
Lol.
Everybody knows Drug dealers..especially short, Afro American sidekicks of Dooperman Clarkie Kent. Sj3 sold so many OxyContin he is a legend in Hollywood.
@@Goonie856 I can’t even comprehend what you just said

Why am I not good enough?" So I get it.
no reason to take it out on others
@@PeterParker-ff7ub I mean, there is a reason, but yknow, sure, she took it too far. But the Lana favoritism is strong yk. Kinda makes sense
I think they used to refer to it as the "millimeter effect" on the Lois & Clark show from the nineties.
Yeah before that Martha had made it out of the blankets he came to Earth in right?
@@local2004prez depends on the version, sometimes the suit is made from those blankets, sometimes just the cape (which is why it's indestructible)
Love these. Longer episodes please :)
I did not expect to see HowToBasic in this comment section lmao
Hell yes!! Me too
Ha same smallville has soooo many fans!!
You should teach them "How to make longer episodes"
This is insane, can't believe you watch these too lmao
Here’s my take on a few of the scenes that you guys were talking about:
Michael, I think Chloe’s overreaction had more to do with the fact that it was Lana taking over The Torch; had it been anyone else, she would’ve been upset but not seen it as a threat.
Good thoughts pal. Dig it
I totally agree with you! I thought the same thing!
@@shaunblake2215 So true, I remember being angry so easily about stupid things when a teenager.
Well said.
Etched into history 🤣🤣
Incredibly accurate. This is the psychological warfare passive aggressive behavior that can happen in HS among young women.
That's how women are man, drives me crazy 😂
"Al's Corner" is a great little segment. That should definitely be a weekly thing! Great insight!
What other episode/s do we see Phelan? According to the DC Fandom wiki, he dies.
@@TNK689 you know what? You are absolutely right I got Phalen confused with Roger Nixon. I edited it. Thanks!
Omg the "damn whos that?!" line.... and the whole bit about lex and victoria and lex never leaving his office 😂😂😂
Rogue is so underrated and doesn't get enough love. It's the best ep of S1 and one of the best of the whole show. Here's my top 10 reasons why :
1) Bus - Best practical effect of the show.
Agreed
I love Michael being critical about the episodes, where Tom finds the best in them, it's a great balance to dissect every episode that we all fans are looking forward to know ♥️
I agree. Michael being more critical is very on par with his character Lex Luthor, while Tom being more optimistic is on par with Clark Kent/Superman.
Loved the bus scene. Also loved how we get to see how desperate Lex was to find out Clark’s secret when he asked what Phelan had on Clark. We really get to start seeing his obsession with Clark’s secret despite being his friend.
18:55 Michael "I always liked darker."
Me thinking 'Yup, that's definitely what Lex would say.' LMAO
Yeah she was top tier
Going back watching it now Allison is definitely ahead in her acting out of the younger cast
Kents' POV: the first time we let Clark go alone to Metropolis, he gets himself into trouble xD

Only 4 min in so far and I say, “Let Michael be Michael!”

Well said
For this episode, its greatness was because we get to see teenage Clark struggle with villains who threatened his loved ones before he becomes the incorruptible superhero in the comics.

LMAO
In the FB announcement almost every comment said "one of my all time favorite episodes" or "best episode of S1".
Whenever im having a bad day i watch smallville, my favorite show

I appreciate how critical Michael is of the storylines. He’s NOT shitting on the show, he’s just stirring an honest discussion about the things that worked and the things that didn’t (for him). And. Michael, you were right about Phelan appearing in a later episode (Zero), in a flashback scene.
Yeah, there are lots of less than stellar stuff in the show (22 episodes a year is kinda crazy....)--but also lots of great stuff as well
These discussions of each Smallville episode is wonderful to hear.

Lex begins to suspect Clark more bit by bit…
I love Al comments.
Love Chloe!!! My youngest daughter wants to name her future daughter Chloe.
Love the moments when you are just buddies ribbing each other. 17:16 was priceless :)
Rosenbaum's frankness is why I'm here.
Will have it every week ❤️
For me the Best season 1 episode right here. Forget the B story with the Lana and Chloe, Rogue has got so many layers:
- Kent family dynamic, their greatest fears realised, Clark's biggest challenge so far, played by an actor who hits all the right notes for a dirty cop.
Ryan is great! Makes me laugh with his takes. Hope he sticks around for the whole show.
I like how he’s watching it for the first time as well so it gives it a fresh take in a sense on his end.
Tom and Michael youre great.❤❤❤
I like the reactions we have. I like Michael being tough on Smallville. I like Tom being the optimist.
I love that Tom loves 24! Smallville and 24 are two of my favorite shows!
That episode was actually on tv last week in México. 🇲🇽
It's always a pleasure to hear you guys.
Love it!!!
Roghue was a great episode.
One of my favorite. especially with the amazing scenes and settings. !!
I just want a multiverse Superman movie with Henry Cavill,Brandon Routh,Tom Welling and Tyler Hoechlin fighting a big threat...itd be GLORIOUS
😯😯😯
I could watch them hang out or working on the family farm. 😀
Christopher Reeves flies in the background..
Man. Clancy is America's All-Might.
And the king of them all J. Jonah Jameson lol
Although the fact that there were many with LL was something surprising to even the comic book creators, they didn't realize it until so many years later.
@@brookswilliams5239his full name John Jonah Jameson Jr
Oh man you got no idea how much smallville shaped my life. It’s always been my favorite. A more perfect cast couldn’t been squires!
No freak of the week a first. Ready to hear all the tea ☕ from behind the scenes. 😏 Loved the bullet dodging effect
Allll the tea
I love the fact that Michael really critiques each episodes it shows that he cares a lot about and respects the quality of each episode! Same with Tom how he is able to look back and give these episodes good reviews on average because of the show’s amazing heart! Love this podcast! Love you guys!
I love Rogue. They dynamic of Clark's powers being used against him was great. My favorite episodes were when everything around Clark seemed real, as it made his powers stand out more.
That is actually something i like about the show when something bad happens it gets wrapped up in the episode. Gives me such relief haha ❤
That would have happened on “The Boys” 😁
People willing to extort know they have people right where they want them and are ballsy
Yes, please do every episode! I know I’m late but I’m busy, I don’t forget to get around to things even a year later🙏
So looking forward to Red K Clark and all the Alicia stuff ❤
Can’t wait to get into that
Don’t remind me of Alicia 😭
This Podcast is the cherry on the cake you guys are offering to all the fans around the world ! I can wait to watch all the podcast and especially the ones about the latest seasons !
YES! Please bring in Erica earlier, would love to hear her thoughts. ❤
🙌❤️
I never could have imagined there would be a Smallville podcast 16 years later especially this year which was the worst and best year. This podcast has already become a highlight of my week and has provided an escapism to my teenage years watching my favorite show. Appreciate the POV of Michael and Tom especially now as a so-called adult. Thanks you three!❤
Honestly I think one of the best effects in smallville was the super speed so Clarke dodging bullets in “slow motion” was super good! I mean “bullet time”. Cool name
I also loved that very much, I see people hate on it but I never understood why
That made me laugh! Micheal, I love that you are a critic. I'm watching because of that and I often agree with you. This gives authenticity to the podcast. Keep it up and thanks for doing this!
The name thing is super common in comics.
Marvel: Peter Parker, Betty Brant, Bruce Banner, Reed Richards, etc. I think there is something where the names just stick on your mind. I noticed as time went on, less characters were named this way. I think the X-Men barely did it. But yeah, a lot of early Marvel, DC and Archie comics created names like that.
Alliteration! We remember things easier!
"and worst of all, J. Jonah Jamieson Jr."
Killed 9 episodes in two days, still going! I love you guys for doing this!!!
That's a great idea! You guys should bring on Erica... Michael and Ryan haven't seen the show either so it'd be interesting to hear Erica's thoughts because she was part of the casting process and casted people on the show in the early seasons so it works! Fantastic idea!
This is the only podcast I need! Keep the honesty coming.
