    Regarding Lex hanging out with highschoolers - I always took this as Lex suffering from a bit of arrested development. He's being groomed as this unfeeling future CEO of a shady corporation by his abusive father and doesn't seem to have to many people in his life that he can trust other than Clark. He never seemed creepy... just really lonely.

    • @arkfunatic2024
      @arkfunatic2024 2 года назад +12

      Lonely and manipulative, with a touch of narcissism. Parents don't 'groom' their children. They raise them as they see fit. Lex could have changed his life anytime, all he had to do was choose to walk away from the money.

    • @rolandofgilead43
      @rolandofgilead43 Год назад +13

      @@arkfunatic2024 i disagree with some parents do i think groom them now is this all parents no it's not but if you have a guy like Lionel Luthor he didn't raise him he was grooming him to be well him at some point and sadly he did later become him. but the vast majority of parents aren't grooming their kids their raising them

    • @melindamercier6811
      @melindamercier6811 Год назад +19

      @@arkfunatic2024 parents absolutely groom their children. there’s a huge difference between grooming aka raising a child to reach their potential with love and positive encouragement, and grooming aka raising them to become a manipulative and undercutting human being. Any parent who is “raising” their child to be the latter is grooming (also defined as preparing) them to be a horrible person. Grooming typically has a negative connotation in this context, and Lionel was indeed negatively impacting his son with horrible parenting, as many parents do. Grooming is the appropriate word.

    Loved having Al and Miles, also really liked hearing about how Annette and John worked with each other - very much like their on screen relationship. Something else is you can really begin to see the seeds of the divide between Clark and Lex in this episode, the mistrust about level 3 and envy of Lex when staring over Lionels fake hug at the Kents real one. I think that's why Lex, jokes aside, lurks because he wants that family, he wants to be wanted for something good rather than a fake PR hug.

    This episode had so many great moments! Starting with Clark trying to control other teenagers on his party and then getting caught by his parents, how the jitters influence Earl's life, Earl trying to find help but getting desperate and taking hostages, kryptonite making it impossible for Clark to save the day like he usually does, Lex trusting his father and being brave and then the differences between family hugs that Clark and Lex got (it was really heartbreaking to watch but in the same time added so much to the characters and showed how different their environments were).
    To be honest I enjoyed how Lionel was the bad guy in this episode while everybody else tried their best to be good, including Lex and Whitney being brave or even Earl, who was a victim there, not a villain.

    It's amazing to see you again guys! I know i'm 2 years late, but after 8 episodes I wanted to write a comment about this one because it has a special place in my memory. It was early 2002 when the show arrived here in Spain and surprisingly I wasn't aware about it because I just missed the teaser/commercials at the time... It's been 23 years but I clearly remember being at home late night with my parents in this gap between the dinner and going to bed, just zapping on the TV and then suddenly one channel is playing this episode. This is how I found out about Smallville...
    I also remember the sensation, as a comic-book fan, connecting the dots as the scene plays. Michael and Tony's characters were complete unknowns for me, until Tom joined and I think someone said "Lex" or "Clark" and that was the moment that changed everything. I was 15 to 16 yo at the time and I remember being so excited... "omg these are young Clark and Lex from Superman???... WTF!?...".
    I just saw the climax and the end of the episode and I had to go to bed because it was a week/school day, but I remember myself trying to sleep thinking about the show, about chat about it with my classmates and stuff... And also how much I waited for the next week's episode to watch it live.
    This show means so much to me. I think it changed the TV forever and paved the way for a new generation of shows.
    I loved how all the cast worked and obviously you two guys were amazing on it. I'll binge watch this podcast for shure!

    In regards to “creepy lex” I think there is a simple explanation in terms of his character. Lex grew up with few to no truly good people around. The only people who seemed to care about him were paid to do so. When he gets to smallville he is miraculously saved by some random high school kid he hit with his car. The mystery of what happened and seeing a truly good person in Clark would likely leave him at least curious but given lex’s personality likely obsessed with understanding this one of a kind person. All the other high school kids he interacts with is as an extension of his obsession with the guy who saved him and doesn’t seem to have any secret ulterior motives. Wanted to call in and say this but thought it might be too long and this let me make sure I got it out clearly as possible. Hope y’all see this and if possible give thoughts on the next episode.

    • @thehermitman822
      @thehermitman822 2 года назад +11

      That's a great explanation. He's "sheltered" from normal interactions and therefore is "creepily" seeking love, respect, friendship, & genuine guidance from wholesome alien ppl to him.

    • @josephostbyluvsfiji

      @@thehermitman822 exactly. At this point he still wants to be good but this is his first big exposure to a truly good person. He latches on and tries to understand everything about him, the place he lives, and those around him. Even trying to do things to improve his life as a way to thank him.

    Loved this episode of the show and also the podcast! Hearing about the chaos going on behind the scenes during the early days is a fascinating. I can totally relate to lex’s envy of the beautiful relationship between Clark and his parents. Can see the spark there of later where Lex tells Clark he wants everything that’s his 😘

    So Smallville is my favorite show of all time. I didn't really have any interest in watching it at first, because I wasn't in to comics or superheroes or whatever, but sometime around season 3 I believe, I watched an episode or two out of boredom and was instantly a huge fan. Not only that, but I got really into superhero stuff in general, and still am. Now I'm a full-fledged geek/gamer/anime lover/etc. It literally DID change my life. It's crazy how huge Smallville got, but I don't think I knew just how enormously popular it was until a couple years after it ended. I mean, I knew it was popular...just not HOW popular. 17 years ago I made a cheesy music video that I uploaded to my personal RUclips channel, and probably shared it on MySpace (yup...it was THAT long ago). It was just scenes from Smallville that I edited together to make a music video. The song was "Daddy Cool" by Placebo, and I chose scenes that fit with the music enough to make sense. I'm not an editor...I had little experience with whatever basic, free editing software I was using...and I'm not patient enough to devote a whole lot of time and energy to a creative project that I'm just doing for fun...so the finished product was mediocre at best (and that's being generous). As for my channel...it's just a personal channel. I'm not a professional content creator, nor did I intend to use my channel in that way. It's just a place for me to preserve any videos I make that I want to keep or occasionally share on social media. I have very few followers and most of my videos, even the ones I share online, have view counts that often don't even reach double digits. That cheesy music video of mine, however, has 52,000 views to date. That may not seem like a lot to some people...not after 17 years...but keep in mind, I wasn't ever seeking views. My channel is tiny. The video itself isn't great. The song is awesome, but not well-known. The band is fairly popular, but not huge. Finally, most of the views came years after Smallville ended. The view count is due entirely to Smallville's enormous and dedicated fan base. I think it was when the view count reached 10,000 or so that I started to understand just how popular the show really was. I remember feeling oddly proud. Not of myself, but of the fact that my favorite show of all time was so much more successful than I'd realized. Hopefully that makes sense to other people. It makes sense to ME. Anyway...love Smallville...always will. Love the podcast. Just discovered it yesterday, but now I know what I'll be watching for the next few weeks: Smallville by night; Talk Ville by day. It's been too long since I binged the show, so thank you for giving me a great reason to do so!! If you ever need a long-time Smallville fanboy for the podcast, feel free to let me know!!

    Such a fun episode. A great antagonist who's not evil, just desperate and lost. The party was a fun look into Clark seeing that maybe being popular isn't exactly what suits his character, no matter how much most high school kids THINK they want to be popular. The talk with the creators was a blast! Lots of great stories!

    Jitters is one of the best episodes of season one. The storyline of Earl was heart-touching & poignant. Everyone has performed really well in this episode. Michael as Lex really shines in this one, first when he decides to go inside the plant to save others & second at the end of the episode when he extends financial help for Earl's treatment.
    The last scene nicely highlights the difference between the Kents and the Luthors. Lex while looking at the Kents desires a family like them for himself. It is twice now that Clark has saved Lex and earlier Lex had asked Clark how did he pull them up. Hence, I feel that the look Lex gives to Clark means while longing for love he is also secretly harbouring the desire to solve the mystery called Clark Kent & silently resolves to do so.
    This podcast was awesome with Al & Miles. A big 'Thank You' to Michael and Tom for Talkville.
