I agree. They could have even done a goofy scene (and then cut it, and later had it as part of the deleted scenes) of Annette walking into a room where Christopher was, but he did not see her at first, he asks "Lana?", looks up at Annette & apologizes for calling her that. It would have been awesome to just have a hint/ wink regarding their previous roles :)

From the very first episode of this podcast, I've been hoping two things: that Annette O'Toole would appear, and that Tom would greet her with "Hi Mom!" This made my dorky little heart happy.
Aww Annette is such a treasure. I love her. 43:20 the episode Tom is talking about is S4 episode 11 "Unsafe" where under the influence of Red K, Clark marries Alicia in Vegas and the aftermath is how Martha is disappointed in Clark's decisions and Clark cries when he says that Alicia is the only one who made him feel normal and special at the same time. I think Tom might be confusing that one with one where there was a party at the Kent farm, either Jitters or Spell, maybe.
That should have happened because I don’t think Clark ever got into any trouble from that party because once he saves someone. They drop it. No longer in trouble. Happens again this season.
Loved this episode and it was really good to see Annette and to hear of her fondness for Tom and Michael. Lineage was full of emotion and intrigue and deserves to be one of the highest rated episodes of the season😊
This episode had so much to talk about. The master manipulative skills of Lionel over this poor woman!! Who he had mistreated so badly. And the short interactions between Lionel and Jonathan Kent. How even with that little amount of time Lionel managed to “contaminate” Jonathan’s soul. What a snake 🐍 ( well said Tom ) Jonathan’s gilt at the end of the episode the remorse he feels for what he did to the Ross’ family . John Schneider shows the emotion ,so well through the screen that, as an audience, we can feel it too. It was amazingly played. And don’t even get me started on Michael’s performance on Lex…. Ufff!!! It had so much in it !!!! I will comment about it later. 😅
First off, when Clark says to Chloe, “You want to find someone’s mother, find your own”…. Absolutely chilling. That was great acting by Tom. Also, Annette!!! What a treat. She’s like the sweetest person alive in the show and out of it. Great episode! Thank you guys!!

This episode means the world to me. As an adopted son (of a Superman fan ☺️), the themes tackled in this one aren’t seen always on TV and portrayed as accurately as it is here. With Lana, Clark, Lex, and Chloe all dealing with different parental situations, the writers of this one really deserve a lot of credit. Very well filmed episode, too. Lighting is next level. And I'm telling you, when that final episode aired, I felt like one of my best and dearest friends was dying. Oh, my heart broke. So " Thank God" we have DVDs and reruns. I love that because Tom’s so tall, he always had to be several feet behind Sam and Allyson in every one shot that they had to do together. Something about his head always floating right behind or between both their little shoulders just tickles my soul in the best way 😂 truly such an iconic trio
Lol, I can't really take Al's description of the age gap seriously, he never really seemed to understand how old high school freshman are or how high school works. He put Lex at 21 or 22(and I can only assume he means at the start of the show) and said he was 5 years older than a bunch of high school freshman (14 year olds). He also thought high school freshman would all be driving and that a freshman girl can be homecoming queen, so...🙄
The ending for this episode always gets to me as Jonathan Kent tells about how Lionel pressured him to sabotage Pete Ross's family farm. As Clark tells his dad it's not your fault, but Jonathan saying I am responsible and carrying that burden by himself affected him mentally and physically. Another thing I liked was the somber music playing in the background as Jonathan walks into the dark as Clark and I believe Martha look on from the barn.
1:02:27 Tom is the best actor :P I feel very silly, just like yesterday I commented on the last episode about how the Smallville wiki said Martha's dad's surname was "Clark", and I thought it was hilarious that Clark would've been named "Clark Clark" in the alternate timeline where Martha divorced Red Flag Husband Jonathan. I had totally forgotten that they explain the reasoning in this very episode 😄
Annette was great as Lana. I was only 7 when I saw her as Lana. Her role really stuck with me. Then I got a little older, and she was Beverley in the IT miniseries, and Rose Kennedy in the Kennedy miniseries. But when I saw her in Smallville, I thought it was the coolest casting! All my growing up Superman memories came flooding back. Annette is perfect, and her character really is a role model for how I want to parent. ❤️
This episode was stellar from top to bottom!! Smallville really was during a transitionary period for tv/movies. The writing/filming/acting really brings out that old school vibe that Tom brings up while also still being a coming of age show for teens
Ah, the first episode of Smallville I ever watched. It was a rerun on ABC Family before it became Freeform. I didn't even have The WB when I was a teenager. I've seen all of the episodes since then. Great show, guys. And having Annette O'Toolle on was a delight.
Love how they had to make all these convoluted work arounds for the adoption. When the original comics came out they just said that there was a big snowstorm shortly after they found the rocket and they were homebound thru the winter and told people that Martha gave birth then. Not an uncommon thing at the end of the great depression.
Annette is too precious for words! Also, I always assumed that little Clark helped with lifting the spaceship kind of like how I thought he lifted the truck after he found Jonathan and Martha.
In regards to wether of not Clark being Martha’s maiden name is canon. I believe it is. I don’t remember anything about it in the comics, but in the original 1978 movie: Superman: The Motion Picture, they have that scene right after they found the baby where Jonathan is fixing their flat tire, and he gets onto Martha and not getting any ideas about keeping the baby, he calls her “Martha Clark Kent”
For the space shipping. Basdd on the size and Johnathan being a farmer. I always assumed he took a truck with a pull or something to lift. Farmers often have to lift/move heavy objects around.
You are entirely right (Annette). I wasn’t a popular kid at that age or into sports. A nerdy kid into Harry Potter and superheroes. But literature, tv, cinema like you all produce helps kids like me. Families who are distant. Children who feel alone. Anyone who says actors, directors, writers, etc are overpaid or just “pretenders” genuinely don’t know how much you guys do for us all. Valuable life lessons I received from Annette O’Toole and John Schneider, I may never have gotten elsewhere. And that extends to every single member of your cast and team. Thank you all for all you do. You’re educators, caretakers, entertainers, and inspirations to millions.

Great podcast episode so many fun and heartwarming moments. Who else melt when Tom said "Hi mom" and "love you mom" and when Annette told them "I love you" or when Tom and Michael blew her kisses, just warmed my heart. But it took me out when Michael said "see ya the mom I always wanted" 🤣The Smallville cast bond is beautiful to watch IRL and that's why you guys were also so great on screen together. "Lineage" was a great episode! 🌹🌹
This was such a great episode, especially the part where Lionel just turns around and pressures Jonathan. It's like he can't stand that he was seen as vulnerable and in someone's debt for even a moment, he just has to bend everyone to his will. Love the PODCAST GUYS keep it up!
Love these podcasts. This one broke my heart; when Mr Welling said "Hi, Mom" to Ms O'Toole, I was reminded of how Wil Wheaton always addresses Gates McFadden as 'Space Mom'.
Honestly, the laser beams coming from Chris Reeves eyes is literally just a '70s interpretation of heat vision. It works the exact same way as the vision on Smallville, with the added benefit of much more modern technology to visualize it.
I finally watched all the Christopher reeves Superman movies after growing up on smallville and I had no idea Anette played the original Lana until she popped up on screen.
I jump on these every Wednesday as I get ready for work. Just want to say that I really appreciate the work you are all putting into this, both in front of and behind the scenes! It means a lot to me and I’m sure many many other OG Smallville fans! We love you guys, and we are so thankful for the effort you’re putting in to make this happen for us! “Hi, sweet darling.” Aaaaw. That was adorable. I’m so happy I found this channel. I’m from the Philippines. I remember Smallville was shown on our local channel every Friday night. I recorded every episode on my VCR, so I could watch it again over the weekend. I bought blank VHS tapes in bulks. I remember the video store had them on sale as they were about to be phased out in favor of CDs . The guy at the cashier has a funny look on his face each time I buy a lot of those tapes like “what the hell is she gonna do with all these.”😂. I recall counting each ad in between the episode as it was airing, getting ready to press record before the last ad finishes so I won’t miss a single scene. 😂. Damn, I feel so old. 😂😂

I always felt that Lex was acting as an older brother and mentor to Clark, which made sense given the age difference (this is especially true in season 1). As the show progressed, they became best friends. The older brother and mentor role makes sense given Lex's history in the show (something we don't explore deeply until season 3).
You can see why Redux was placed before this episode - With the family drama in that episode surrounding Clark's grandfather, it leads into this one, which is entirely focused on family. This one fares a lot better as it has a running theme that makes the episode much more narratively cohesive. The flashbacks regarding Clark's origin with Lionel were wonderfully engaging and served to give the episode a feeling of lovely weight and importance. Clark and Chloe reaching crisis point with the blowout also felt very suitable as well as engaging, with Chloe's ever persistent, seemingly insatiable curiosity inevitably causing tension with the constantly protective, somewhat worried Clark. As cold and unnervingly intense as he was, you have to wonder if this is the only way she'll truly get the message he wants to convey. The day-in-the-life Clark super-speeding to breakfast and still being late, and the heat visioning of bread for toast were also wonderful touches - It's important to show regular stuff like this but the show rarely calls for it, here it also served great narrative importance, as we knew something substantial had to be coming to shake all this up.
Jonathan probably said he wanted a deal “no questions asked” and then just made the request for the adoption paper. I can imagine Lionel probing a bit but Jonathan reminding him about the terms of the deal and Lionel smiling, knowing he was going to ask for a favor in return which Jonathan wouldn’t dare to deny him. That’s why Jonathan did what he did….he wanted to keep things quiet and he did make a big request so he owed Lionel…
I thought the Chloe being nosey arc in this episode gave character to her. It showed her as not so perfect like Lana lang and how reporter traits were almost in her blood. They changed a lot of shit later but at this point it was almost set in stone that she will be the big daily planet reporter. Also they don’t make her a full out villain. They make her a self-aware person. So you know she’s still gonna be a main character with adverse personality traits. Like almost everyone in the real world. I think at some point in s3 their friendship hits rock bottom but all that effort put in to that story line pays off in season 5. It makes it believable how Clark trust her with life after 5 cs they have been through ups and downs and interventions so they have seen it all. Chloe’s character was one of the best written characters in the show. At least up to s8. We literally saw her grow as a person. That story was never flat.
I believe it was a no questions asked scenario regarding Clark’s adoption paperwork. Jonathan did Lionel a huge favor of saving his son and he promised that he would return the favor. Although, Lionel being a bad person asked for more. I’d like to say that Jonathan just said simply, “without diving in too deep, we have a child with whom we cannot provide any information for and I need your help botching the adoption papers…” and Lionel left it at that. But I always thought that Lionel really looked into more behind doors and that’s sort of where he suspects clark could be the traveler he and the veritas group were searching for. He just waited it out before acting to be more sure. This can explain Lionel’s interest in Clark over the beginning of the series.
There’s a later quote from Chloe where she says “there are two billionaires that seem to be keenly interested in you clark” I might have messed up that quote but it’s something along those lines. Veritas group members have always been interested in clark since the adoption. But Lionel well I won’t say it.
Its so nice to see your guys relationships with Al and Annette. Its so sweet. This episode was so good because of all the backstory for lex and clarks family's. I enjoy watching you 3 every weds. Thanks for the podcast!
You can tell Lex really wanted Clark to be his little brother. I just imagine that somewhere in the multiverse there is a universe where Lex and Clark are brothers and Lex never turns evil.

This was quite an interesting and intriquing episode overall, due to revealing more about the Kents and Luthors history. It was also neat seeing Lana discover her family history as well, by coming face to face with her biological father Henry Small. The actress for Rachel Donleevy did a great job in this episode. Overall, a fun one.😀
It was great to see Annette on Talk Ville! I'm pretty sure the scene that Tom talked about (in which he got tearful talking to Annette) was from season one; now, I need to go back and watch it again. BTW, Clark being given Martha's maiden name is from the comics and was mentioned in the 1978 movie as well.
Annette has a valid point about acting with Chris Reeve and it should've happened. I think with Margot Kidder she didn't want to continue season 4 due to Chris Reeve's passing. She was suppose to be the big bad but got killed off by the Teagues which I remeber. Of course it was somewhere in time reunion as well with Jane Seymour playing Genevieve Teague.
I think the scene Tom was refering to, when Martha says she is disapointed on him, was not when he threw a party. It was when he was under red kryptonite and got married in Vegas.

I feel the same as these comments do... I want more than one a week. Back in the day, my daughter, her husband, and i watched every week, every episode. And I'm telling you, when that final episode aired, I felt like one of my best and dearest friends was dying. Oh, my heart broke. So " Thank God" we have DVDs and reruns.

I love that because Tom’s so tall, he always had to be several feet behind Sam and Allyson in every one shot that they had to do together. Something about his head always floating right behind or between both their little shoulders just tickles my soul in the best way 😂 truly such an iconic trio

Lol, I can't really take Al's description of the age gap seriously, he never really seemed to understand how old high school freshman are or how high school works. He put Lex at 21 or 22(and I can only assume he means at the start of the show) and said he was 5 years older than a bunch of high school freshman (14 year olds). He also thought high school freshman would all be driving and that a freshman girl can be homecoming queen, so...🙄
The ending for this episode always gets to me as Jonathan Kent tells about how Lionel pressured him to sabotage Pete Ross's family farm. As Clark tells his dad it's not your fault, but Jonathan saying I am responsible and carrying that burden by himself affected him mentally and physically. Another thing I liked was the somber music playing in the background as Jonathan walks into the dark as Clark and I believe Martha look on from the barn.

I feel very silly, just like yesterday I commented on the last episode about how the Smallville wiki said Martha's dad's surname was "Clark", and I thought it was hilarious that Clark would've been named "Clark Clark" in the alternate timeline where Martha divorced Red Flag Husband Jonathan. I had totally forgotten that they explain the reasoning in this very episode 😄
The flashbacks with Young Clark Kent at the Kent house seeing Martha being so happy was a touching moment.
Annette was great as Lana. I was only 7 when I saw her as Lana. Her role really stuck with me. Then I got a little older, and she was Beverley in the IT miniseries, and Rose Kennedy in the Kennedy miniseries. But when I saw her in Smallville, I thought it was the coolest casting! All my growing up Superman memories came flooding back. Annette is perfect, and her character really is a role model for how I want to parent. ❤️
Annette just has a glow about her which lights up the room. You (Mike) and Tom just beam with joy. It was so sweet to hear her stories.
This episode was stellar from top to bottom!! Being able to see Annette with you guys was an absolute treat and I always love when Rosey calls Al on the fly!! 😂😂😂 Rosey, Tom, Ryan...you guys make my week EVERY week on Wednesday morning and I just can't tell you all how much I appreciate all of you for doing this!! Smallville really was during a transitionary period for tv/movies. The writing/filming/acting really brings out that old school vibe that Tom brings up while also still being a coming of age show for teens

Ah, the first episode of Smallville I ever watched. It was a rerun on ABC Family before it became Freeform. I didn't even have The WB when I was a teenager. I've seen all of the episodes since then.

Love how they had to make all these convoluted work arounds for the adoption. When the original comics came out they just said that there was a big snowstorm shortly after they found the rocket and they were homebound thru the winter and told people that Martha gave birth then. Not an uncommon thing at the end of the great depression.
Annette is too precious for words! Also, I always assumed that little Clark helped with lifting the spaceship kind of like how I thought he lifted the truck after he found Jonathan and Martha.
In regards to wether of not Clark being Martha’s maiden name is canon. I believe it is. I don’t remember anything about it in the comics, but in the original 1978 movie: Superman: The Motion Picture, they have that scene right after they found the baby where Jonathan is fixing their flat tire, and he gets onto Martha and not getting any ideas about keeping the baby, he calls her “Martha Clark Kent”
For the space shipping. Basdd on the size and Johnathan being a farmer. I always assumed he took a truck with a pull or something to lift. Farmers often have to lift/move heavy objects around.
Annette was such a wonderful Mama Kent to Tom's Clark Kent. Really, made me realize and appreciate what my mom does for me everyday.
You are entirely right (Annette). I wasn’t a popular kid at that age or into sports. A nerdy kid into Harry Potter and superheroes.
But literature, tv, cinema like you all produce helps kids like me. Families who are distant. Children who feel alone.
Anyone who says actors, directors, writers, etc are overpaid or just “pretenders” genuinely don’t know how much you guys do for us all. Valuable life lessons I received from Annette O’Toole and John Schneider, I may never have gotten elsewhere. And that extends to every single member of your cast and team.
Thank you all for all you do. You’re educators, caretakers, entertainers, and inspirations to millions.
I do like how they admit they don't remember. So many people think the actors are fans. It's a job. If you asked me what I did 2 years ago at my job in October I'd have no clue.

Great podcast episode so many fun and heartwarming moments. Who else melt when Tom said "Hi mom" and "love you mom" and when Annette told them "I love you" or when Tom and Michael blew her kisses, just warmed my heart. But it took me out when Michael said "see ya the mom I always wanted" 🤣The Smallville cast bond is beautiful to watch IRL and that's why you guys were also so great on screen together. "Lineage" was a great episode! 🌹🌹
This was such a great episode, especially the part where Lionel just turns around and pressures Jonathan. It's like he can't stand that he was seen as vulnerable and in someone's debt for even a moment, he just has to bend everyone to his will. Love the PODCAST GUYS keep it up!

Love these podcasts. This one broke my heart; when Mr Welling said "Hi, Mom" to Ms O'Toole, I was reminded of how Wil Wheaton always addresses Gates McFadden as 'Space Mom'.
Honestly, the laser beams coming from Chris Reeves eyes is literally just a '70s interpretation of heat vision. It works the exact same way as the vision on Smallville, with the added benefit of much more modern technology to visualize it.
I finally watched all the Christopher reeves Superman movies after growing up on smallville and I had no idea Anette played the original Lana until she popped up on screen.
I jump on these every Wednesday as I get ready for work. Just want to say that I really appreciate the work you are all putting into this, both in front of and behind the scenes! It means a lot to me and I’m sure many many other OG Smallville fans! We love you guys, and we are so thankful for the effort you’re putting in to make this happen for us! Annette got me in tears over what could have been with Christopher Reeve. Superman III is actually my favorite because of their chemistry alone. Still miss that guy.
They did plan to do a lot more with Swan (Reeve) but he sadly passed away. I think they probably did discusss having Martha meet Swan.
Wow, Annette was incredible! Her warmth, intelligence, kindness and professionalism in her career and being a major talent just shine through in this amazing interview. Having met her at a convention and always loved her Musicsl abilities (especially with Barry Manilow in Copacabana) you will just be entranced with her loving nature and beautiful soul. “Hi, sweet darling.” Aaaaw. That was adorable. I’m so happy I found this channel. I’m from the Philippines. I remember Smallville was shown on our local channel every Friday night. I recorded every episode on my VCR, so I could watch it again over the weekend. I bought blank VHS tapes in bulks. I remember the video store had them on sale as they were about to be phased out in favor of CDs . The guy at the cashier has a funny look on his face each time I buy a lot of those tapes like “what the hell is she gonna do with all these.”😂. I recall counting each ad in between the episode as it was airing, getting ready to press record before the last ad finishes so I won’t miss a single scene. 😂. Damn, I feel so old. 😂😂

I always felt that Lex was acting as an older brother and mentor to Clark, which made sense given the age difference (this is especially true in season 1). As the show progressed, they became best friends. The older brother and mentor role makes sense given Lex's history in the show (something we don't explore deeply until season 3).
I LOVE how you can just call the show makers and get your answers it shows how much Love went into making this show ❤
You can see why Redux was placed before this episode - With the family drama in that episode surrounding Clark's grandfather, it leads into this one, which is entirely focused on family. This one fares a lot better as it has a running theme that makes the episode much more narratively cohesive. The flashbacks regarding Clark's origin with Lionel were wonderfully engaging and served to give the episode a feeling of lovely weight and importance. Clark and Chloe reaching crisis point with the blowout also felt very suitable as well as engaging, with Chloe's ever persistent, seemingly insatiable curiosity inevitably causing tension with the constantly protective, somewhat worried Clark. As cold and unnervingly intense as he was, you have to wonder if this is the only way she'll truly get the message he wants to convey.
The day-in-the-life Clark super-speeding to breakfast and still being late, and the heat visioning of bread for toast were also wonderful touches - It's important to show regular stuff like this but the show rarely calls for it, here it also served great narrative importance, as we knew something substantial had to be coming to shake all this up.

Jonathan probably said he wanted a deal “no questions asked” and then just made the request for the adoption paper. I can imagine Lionel probing a bit but Jonathan reminding him about the terms of the deal and Lionel smiling, knowing he was going to ask for a favor in return which Jonathan wouldn’t dare to deny him. That’s why Jonathan did what he did….he wanted to keep things quiet and he did make a big request so he owed Lionel…
I thought the Chloe being nosey arc in this episode gave character to her. It showed her as not so perfect like Lana lang and how reporter traits were almost in her blood. They changed a lot of shit later but at this point it was almost set in stone that she will be the big daily planet reporter. Also they don’t make her a full out villain. They make her a self-aware person. So you know she’s still gonna be a main character with adverse personality traits. Like almost everyone in the real world.
I think at some point in s3 their friendship hits rock bottom but all that effort put in to that story line pays off in season 5. It makes it believable how Clark trust her with life after 5 cs they have been through ups and downs and interventions so they have seen it all.
Chloe’s character was one of the best written characters in the show. At least up to s8. We literally saw her grow as a person. That story was never flat.
You should have a running tally of how many highschool scenes actually take place in a classroom. I think its 1 for all of highschool.

I believe it was a no questions asked scenario regarding Clark’s adoption paperwork. Jonathan did Lionel a huge favor of saving his son and he promised that he would return the favor. Although, Lionel being a bad person asked for more. I’d like to say that Jonathan just said simply, “without diving in too deep, we have a child with whom we cannot provide any information for and I need your help botching the adoption papers…” and Lionel left it at that. But I always thought that Lionel really looked into more behind doors and that’s sort of where he suspects clark could be the traveler he and the veritas group were searching for. He just waited it out before acting to be more sure. This can explain Lionel’s interest in Clark over the beginning of the series.
There’s a later quote from Chloe where she says “there are two billionaires that seem to be keenly interested in you clark” I might have messed up that quote but it’s something along those lines. Veritas group members have always been interested in clark since the adoption. But Lionel well I won’t say it.
Lional wanted The Traveler all to himself. Even if he suspected that Clark is him, he wouldnt share it with anybody...

This was quite an interesting and intriquing episode overall, due to revealing more about the Kents and Luthors history. It was also neat seeing Lana discover her family history as well, by coming face to face with her biological father Henry Small. The actress for Rachel Donleevy did a great job in this episode. Overall, a fun one.😀

It was great to see Annette on Talk Ville! I'm pretty sure the scene that Tom talked about (in which he got tearful talking to Annette) was from season one; now, I need to go back and watch it again. BTW, Clark being given Martha's maiden name is from the comics and was mentioned in the 1978 movie as well.

Annette has a valid point about acting with Chris Reeve and it should've happened. I think with Margot Kidder she didn't want to continue season 4 due to Chris Reeve's passing. She was suppose to be the big bad but got killed off by the Teagues which I remeber. Of course it was somewhere in time reunion as well with Jane Seymour playing Genevieve Teague.
Oh my gosh, Annette reminds me 100% of my mother-in-law, what a joy to see her on here with you guys. Damn I love what this cast put together.
I think the scene Tom was refering to, when Martha says she is disapointed on him, was not when he threw a party. It was when he was under red kryptonite and got married in Vegas.
