Annette O'Toole (Smallville, Virgin River) joins us this week to share iconic stories from her decades of work alongside Hollywood legends and all the while how her naivety prevented her from being taken advantage of throughout her early career.
Annette goes on to tell a crazy story of her travels back and forth across the country during 9/11 and how it inevitably led to her winning an Academy Award.
We also talk about her relationship with Michael McKean, enjoying acting now more than ever, and the special impact Smallville has had on people’s lives.
Annette O'Toole on Netflix’s Virgin River, Smallville Burnout, Marrying Michael McKean, & More | Inside of You Podcast #insideofyou #smallville
She’s a great actress. She definitely helped elevate Smallville. Compared to most CW shows, they’re missing the gravitas a lot of the actors on Smallville had.
I would say the Early seasons of Arrow and the Flash had the gravitas of veteran actors you mentioned...but ya Smallville is definitely in a league of its own
@@entertaimenttechdaily3627 I totally agree the early seasons of arrow and the flash are great
Seriously Smallville had Annette O'Toole and John Glover.... And John Schneider. OMG. What an amazing cast of tremendous veteran performers you rarely see that nowadays.
Couldn’t agree more, besides the classic It movie I definitely liked Annette I’m the Smallville Series she’s a great actress. This was such a good interview.🧡
Back in 2001, the WB network wasn't as concerned with political correctness or playing the victim card all the time. By the time they changed to the CW, that mentality had changed, and Smallville was one of the few shows for them that managed to keep most of its sanity. I think its a minor miracle that it actually lasted another five years after the network switch - that kind of thing would never happen today.
OMG can’t believe you got Annette O'Toole on the post cast. She is legend she been in so many amazing TV shows and movies. Love when you have guest that are a lot older on your podcast and that have so much to tell and how openly they are with you Michael. Another awesome episode Michael you Rock!!!
The thing I most appreciate of Michael’s podcasts are how he lets his guest speak and finish their thoughts. So many others cut them off and talk over them. He’s simply amazing and can’t wait to see him in a new project.
Aww it's Annette! She is such a talented actress. I adored her in Smallville. Love the natural rapport Michael and she has. Excited to see this especially since she doesn't seem to do a lot of interviews these days.
You are in for an absolute treat. ❤️❤️❤️
I used to have a crush on Annette from when she played Lana Lang in Superman lll, still looking stunning-
She does when a new season of virgin river is starting I love her too she was great in Nash bridges
@@leannepritchett6323 It was neat when she mentioned that initially, her parents couldn't have children and were going to adopt (like Martha and Jonathan.)
The one thing I loved most about Annette playing Martha on Smallville was the direct connection to the Christopher Reeve Superman franchise!
lol well that was the sad thing about TOM not wanting to wear the suit, which meant no movies. Annette was among those passing the torch.
I liked it whenever they gave Annette the rare scene with Kristin Kreuk. It was cool seeing two generations of Lana Lang together.
@@thelionsshare6668To be fair, Clark not wearing the suit wasn't only Tom's decision. Al Gough & Miles Millar had mandated the "no tights, no flights" policy from the beginning of the show. By the time of the series finale, they had left, so Tom could have made the choice on his own, but for some reason he just didn't feel comfortable with it.
The irony being that the show was about Clark wrestling with his destiny.
@@Moviefan2k4
I’m just finding out she was Lana lang in a Superman
Annette O'Toole and Erica Durance are the two women I can never forget because of Smallville. Such awesome and beautiful ladies inside and out. What sweethearts.
Annette was so outstanding on “Smallville”. What made that show so great was the acting talent and the scripts. Too many shows forget that special effects and outlandish plots don’t mean much without a talented cast.
The characters of Jonathan and Marha Kent were vital to keeping a sense of reality and humanity in show that was so unreal, and that takes talent.
100% on point
I always think of the "Spirit" episode where Annette did this amazing/hilarious job of playing Martha being possessed by this wannabe prom queen. Yes, it's comedic, but it's also a great showcase of her acting talent.
Annette and John Schneider were perfectly cast for Clark's parents. I got to meet John back in 2014, and I asked him what was different between Annette and Cynthia Ettinger. He said she was more of the "blonde farmgirl" type that Al & Miles had originally wanted, and that they had envisioned both Kents as handling Clark with kid gloves. Raising a teenager with Asperger's Syndrome at the time, John was very blunt with them, and said if they wanted a father who would treat the main character like a spoiled child, they should hire someone else. I guess they respected his honesty, because he was kept and Cynthia was replaced.
@@timrob12I freaking LOVE that scene. It cracks me up every time.
@@mandyrobbins2160 It's definitely my favorite episode. A lot of actors are allowed to have fun in that one.
Great actor. She was a perfect choice for Martha in Smallville. She was also great as Lana Lang in Superman 3. Enjoyed her performance in IT.
Damn. What a great episode. Really loved hearing her stories. Didn’t realise how extensive her career was. As she was talking I was imdb-ing everything and just being in awe. Loved it. Keep on keepin on withthe awesome eps.
I’m 52. I remember fondly Superman 3 and this beautiful redhead actor on the screen. Mrs O’Toole 🤩
Michael being all alone even when he was married just proves how our soulmate is someone who is our best friend and how we can waste our time with someone who isn't made for you. Annette and Michael being best friends before they got together is so sweet, one of the greatest building blocks of an amazing relationship. They were there for each other. They loved each others soul and respected on another, and they knew and understood each others work and careers. True partnership, and they have a lot of fun and laughs. Seeing people find love later in life is so sweet, they found it in their late 40s/early 50s! They were meant to be! they are so at ease with one another. I love their love story.
soulmates is a fairy tale concept
Thank you, Michael, for interviewing her! She has a very real compassionate quality that seems rare among the vast majority of Hollywood people.
We ’ve been able to realize that you have a lot of affection for each other. Annette plays Martha with so much truth and the Kent are love and light against the darkness, coldness, and the lovelessness of the Luthor. The episode with her husband is funny and made me laugh a lot.
She is a lovely person and this episode was a real joy, thank you so much Michael 👍💘💙💙💙💙
Annette O' Toole from Superman III as Lana Lang, Smallville as Martha Kent (just brought gravitas to the role and brought the mom qualities beautifully), the short lived The Hunter sequel to Steve McQueen's The Hunter which I loved and wish they had continued the series because it was really good. Just seeing the legacy continue on with the wife and daughter and James Remar playing the love interest was great.
I did see the unaired pilot of Smallville years back with a different actress for Martha Kent and the actress that portrayed her said she didn't feel she was right for the role. At that time The Huntress had ended and Annette O' Toole became available to play Martha Kent and reshot the whole pilot with Annette as Martha Kent. I remember watching the documentary "Look-up in the Sky, The Amazing Story of Superman" where both Miles Millar and Alfred Gough said they wanted Annette for the role of Martha Kent badly and praised her so much because she knew alot about the Superman lore and of course was Lana Lang in Superman III.
Wow just looked that video up. Didn't even know they had another actress!
Can't believe it's been 11 years since Smallville. Great to see her again and hearing beautiful stories.
Longer since she was on Smallville as a star/regularly
I was watching and episode of Smallville and my GF was like "Hey she's in Virgin River!" Her favorite show.
Such a nice surprise to see Annette on this weeks episode, and one of the last main Smallville actors to finally appear on the podcast. A fun episode and Annette seems to be a charming person with a lot of entertaining stories. It's a shame Martha Kent was underutilised on the show but that Jonathan got more screen time. A lot of Annette's scenes ended up as deleted scenes in the later seasons so I don't blame her for wanting to have more time with her family.
A brilliant casting decision having her husband play Perry White, and Michael is my favourite Perry.
I wish current world events hadn't prevented a full cast get together/interviews for Smallville's 20th anniversary. There were plenty of great interviews but it would have been better if the likes of Annette and Erica Durance etc were included. Smallville needs more recognition as a phenomenal show that not only paved the way for modern day superhero shows but how Superman and his mythology should be explored. There's a reason why so many Smallville actors are still ranked the best/one-of-the-best portrayals of the characters they played.
Omg. I am putting aside some time later tonight to watch this from start to finish with NO interruptions. Your channel is incredible. I actually get emotional at times watching your channel. Your guests, and you all sharing. The memories of watching the shows your guests were in. Great stuff. Thank you♥♥♥♥
What an amazing woman! I remember her so well from Nash Bridges and Smallville both. Just a beautiful soul
Annette is such a pleasure to watch. I love her. It's so nice seeing her doing so well. Makes me smile and feel very happy.
These are banging podcasts and interviews Michael. Great work man....
Wait, that clip of the new song was insane! I need to hear more 😮
Loved her in Smallville and Superman III. She is a very beautiful and nice person!
When Welling sees this, just imagine him screeming: SAVE MARTHA! But jokes aside, Annette is lovely.
Thanks Michael for the great interview! Anette's very down-to-Earth for an actress, very chill, and the fame clearly didn't get to her head. Awesome that you guys still keep in touch.
I'm so glad that Annette is finally on Michael's podcast. It was about time to bring her in.Great actress and such a warm hearted person.I loved Annette and John Schneider in Smallville.Such a big part of the show...Actually i love everything about Smallville. And of course big fan of Inside of you...Keep up the good work Michael😉
From Copacabana to Superman III, Annette has been one of my favorite actresses of all time. Working with some amazing co-stars over the years (from Barry Manilow to Christopher Reeve) and showcasing her incredible acting talents with her dozens and dozens of various roles - this interview shows her sweet, kind hearted, intelligent and what a beautiful person she really is. Michael this was one excellent interview and I only have one complaint- it was too short! This could have easily been a two- patter! Thank you Annette! We love you! Thank you Michael and Ryan! Bravo!
Michael McKean was great as Perry White in that one episode he appeared in season 3 of Smallville. I wish they had brought him back for more episodes. I loved Michael McKean's guest spot in Batman Beyond where he voiced a character that's a reporter getting sneak peaks in the most unconventional pay possible to expose the secrets. I just loved how the show also talked about tabloid journalism.
He did come back for an episode in s9, toward the end of the season.
He was in Perry, and in Hostage.
This has been one of my favorite interviews. Annette O'toole is so real and engaging.
Oh my gosh, I absolutely love Annette! She has always struck me me as so lovely and charming. Very down to Earth, grounded and humble. Such a sweetheart. Her legacy stuntcasting as Martha Kent in Smallville, from previously being Lana Lang in Superman 3 was a stroke of genius. And it was neat that Al and Miles (Smallville creators) didn't know this when they initially cast her as she has stated previously. She always had the most heartfelt lines in many of the most heartwarming moments throughout the Smallville series. She was always so perfect as Martha. Brought such warmth and love and made you believe in the great values instilled in Clark. Also, her combination with John Scneider as Jonathan was also perfect and helped to see that. I always love how she does not come off at all like a Hollywood actress and just has this simple humble and graceful elegance to her. Also it's neat that Michael McKean was in Smallville as Perry White, the future editor of the Daily Planet. Such a neat touch. Along with just being so warm and kind. She really is a treasure.
Thumbs up if you love Annette's energy. She's so kind-hearted and pure.
I remember her in Dead by Sunset many years ago. She is always so beautiful and genuine. She is believable and calm and lovely. She doesn't give a reason to roll your eyes at Hollywood.
Michael always gets some great guests on this show and I need to start making more time for this show. Favorite podcast. I love Annette O'Toole also.
I started rewatching smallville because of this podcast love this podcast 🥰
Love the podcast! This was such a treat this week!!! 🥰
Just finished watching Michael with Annette O’Toole and love seeing them together on screen again. I remember the “Cat People” movie, was one of my favourites growing up, the VCR tape wore out from pausing to pool scene. It got me hooked on sci-fi and horror genre movies, the whole cast was great. I loved seeing her on Smallville but was bit sad when Martha Kent became a successful politician and stayed away from the show so much. Clarke still needed his mom’s support…
Thanks Michael and I’m going to watch for a James Remar interview.
I don't know but for some reason this episode today was the best from the overall series so far.
You need to checkout Punisher season 2 on Disney Plus where she plays a villain playing Corbin Bernsen's wife and her performance is really good.
She was great in the punisher 💯
Wow, I've seen her in lots of tv and film, but wow she has been in so so many projects. So amazing.
As always, thank you again, Michael, for a great podcast. Good luck with your album.
I know Annette, and she is one of the greatest people EVER. And also a genius, underrated actor. I love love love her to pieces.
Always have admired her. Love that she is so real & normal
Annette O'Toole is basically my contemporary, & I've always been aware of her career. For instance, I'm someone who saw "Cat People" when it first came out. I find the story of her life's trajectory so far fascinating & I love how open, forthcoming and lovely she was, rolling with the questions and conversation here. I have to say I get a Jessica Tandy vibe off her - not JT in her "Driving Miss Daisy" years but the time around "The Birds". I think if anyone ever does a project about Jessica Tandy , or that she figures into as a character, Annette would be inspired casting! Good show!
I really enjoyed Annette in danielle steel adaptation jewels she was really great in it and in smallville and in the second season of the punisher
She is so cool! She is what got me watching Virgin River.Another great interview!
She was my crush in the late 70's, early 80's. One on One, Cat people, Cross My Heart. The perfect combination of cute AND sexy.
Anyone else notice how much the Smallville cast is like a fine wine. They all age so well.
yes indeed.
oh yes they have aged like some fine wine
They for the most part we good hearted people
Excited for this one. I loved how she played Martha Kent.
I never knew Annette O'Toole could possibly be as sweet in life as in her roles. I guess she took the best parts of that Texas girl with her when moving to the rest of the part of her life. Well done Annette's parents! Well done Annette!
I know this pod is 9 months old but I just had to say it... Michael, what a beautiful interview! I loved it, it's definitely one of my favorites. And her love story, I got chills. Like who doesn't want that kind of magical story. This pod was a treat💜!
She has one of the purest, most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life.
Another awesome episode...Time just flew by and I feel really good now...Thank you and God Bless!!!!
Oh my Annette is such a lovely person. She is such a quality actress. Thank you Michael for another great show.
I always loved her as Martha Kent and the OG Bev from IT (1990)
Thanks Michael! Just brightened my day 😊
Also, have you ever considered being a therapist?! People open up to you in such an intimate level...its a real skill to make people feel so comfortable they can tell you all sorts of private things
I agree. It's a great skill!
And, I said agree michael, I totally love your podcast and the fact that you brought 'Martha' on was the bomb. Michael sound like you hadn't watched Virgin River yet. I encourage you to do so it's somewhat like a soap opera and that is what it is but it's also incredibly amazing and Annette is not surprisingly spectacular
@@garymeise673 she's not surprisingly spectacular to me neither #sarcasm
I totally agree with you about Michael choosing to be a therapist 👍. He'd make an excellent therapist but he chose acting instead. Oh well. What are we supposed to do? I guess acting is his calling.
Another great podcast Michael that I’m really enjoying and I love Annette O’Toole. Can’t wait to see you in Perth later this month.
YES!!!! Annette! What a great podcast so far, I'm not far into it yet. I wish I could be a Patron but I have Lupus and am disabled but I always talk about your channel to my friends.
@38:16 "You still love acting.?.
Oh I love acting more than I've ever loved acting.
Why??!!!!"
Oh Michael Rosenbaum (@InsideOfYouPodcast)!!! LOLOLOLOL! You crack me up with the way you express your acting insecurities!
ruclips.net/video/bdwIV9SX1Co/видео.html
One of my favorites! Such a classy lady all around!
I love Annette, one of my favorite actresses, still gorgeous as well .I remember her from the 70’s .
I really enjoyed this episode, I was kinda hoping she would be a guest on the show and when I found out she was I couldn’t wait to listen to her. She’s a very talented actor and she seems like such a sweet person. I’m was so happy to hear that her marriage was doing so well. I love hearing beautiful love stories from people cuz it gives me hope. I’m a bit of an empath, so I genuinely get a sense of joy when things are going well for someone in any aspect of their life. By the way Rosey, I really like the bond that you and Ryan have, you guys work so great together. And even though we don’t get to see Jason I just want to say he’s doing a tremendous job. Love you guys, from the bottom of my ♥️,
Andy T.
Ahhhhh!!! I’ve been waiting for this episode!!! Annette’s the best ❤️
Michael you conduct some really interesting interviews of your guests. I can’t stop watching.
I haven't seen Annette since Smallville, gosh she sounds and looks great. Same for Micheal. Still watching the episode. Good stuff.
Was wondering when you'd be able to get her on, excited to hear her stories. Happy Tuesday.
I first saw Annette in Superman III and then the mini series of Stephen King's IT. Great actress.
03:58 And that Mrs O'Toole is the difference between an interview and a podcast! ❤
Hands down my Favourite Actress to play Martha Kent.
Such a sweet and genuine woman. Michael McKean is a very lucky man.
1:18:54 Netty the Bounty Hunter is on the case; cant wait!
EDIT: Could Michael do cameo videos as lex luthor?
Annette O'Toole was a awesome guest.
My God! An actual grownup in the movie business. I’m even more of a fan of Annette now than ever. I suspect her husband is also a grownup.
This week’s episode is delightful. Annette definitely opened up and had so many great stories. I learned so much about her. I did not realize that she was a songwriter. Each episode gets better and better.
Great to hear her
Annette O'Toole mentions actor Tim McIntire. He played "Danny Caine", the American half-brother of Kwai Chang Caine in the original Kung Fu series (1972 - 1975).
I liked every scene with Martha. If I was Clark, I'd need my Mom to talk sense in me--for real. She was always needed, to me.
All of Michael interviews are great but this is probably one of the best ones. We don't hear much from Annette and she's been in so many things she was fantastic and Smallville her in John Schneider were the perfect Mr and Mrs Kent.
Annette O'Toole is amazing. Simple as that.
Martha Kent! I absolutely loved this interview!
Wow! Finally! Annette O'Toole! You're very cool as always! 😃💖💫
She's 40 years older than me but I've been crushing on Anette since Smallville season 1 lol 🤣 Queen 👌
Wonderful interview she looks fantastic! But omg saying love to be inside of you at the end makes it sound so wrong LMFAO
Regardless 10/10 Podcast!
My favorite part of Tuesday 💙 Rock on Michael 🤘 Omg!!! Annette so happy you got her on here When Lex Luthor and Martha Kent reunited 🎇
I've been thinking for a while now they need to make a movie where Anette plays Ashley Johnson's mom. They look so much alike.
I'm one of the millions of guys that has a huge crush on Annette starting back in the 70s! When she popped up in Superman 3 as Lana I loved it but then seeing her on Smallville was so much cooler because of that.
Thanks for this video Michael.
It's very nice to see the charming Annette O'Toole.
Peace to your home.
From Kaliningrad (Russia) regards.
I love hearing Annette talk about Christopher Reeve. He was born to play Superman and he embodied the character in and out of the costume.
Yes! This one is long overdue! Love to see Mama Kent interviewed! And Michael McKean was an unsung fantastic Perry White!
That was wonderful! ❤
Love your podcast Micheal, Annette O'Toole is such a gem. I'm a big fan of her's, loved her in Smallville which is my favorite show of all time and I'm not blowing smoke up your butt when I say you were and still are the best LEX LUTHER. No one play better then you. Would love to see you play the character in the big screen. Keep up the great work.
Casting her as Lanna Lang was a stroke of genius!
She started dancing at three! Awesome! I go kicked out of dancing school when I was 3. Oh well. ..like I said delightful interview...Great episode.
This might be one of my favorite episodes. Really a cool, fun interview. Keep up the great work.
Interesting fact about Indiana. The #1 religion there is Christianity. The #2 religion is Islam. Indiana doesn't have a lot of Jews.
Annette!!!!! Loved watching this episode. Now youve had the whole Kent family on. Cant wait to see what other guest come on
Happy Tuesday Micheal! Thank you for bringing on Annette O'Toole. Loved her in Original Superman with Christopher Reeves and Stephan King's It.
I have been hoping you'd have Annette O'Toole on here. Yay! :)
44:30 great memories of Superman III and the REAL Superman Christopher Reeve
Annette is so wonderful!
