Well, Anette doesn't know this... or me, but she was responsible for me getting a job at a big talent agency; my first real job. I had moved to L.A. and needed work badly. I wanted to work in the entertainment industry. I was walking in my neighborhood and saw her coming out of a building. I knew her from all the television shows that she had guest starred on in my childhood and teen years and figured, perhaps, whatever they did in this building was the entertainment business. I ran home, changed into my interview outfit, grabbed a resume and walked back into that building. Obviously this was before the days of email... way before. And it was before you needed to have a law degree to work in the mailroom. The H.R. department took me straight upstairs interviewed me and set me up with one of their agents. It was one of the biggest talent agencies in the world. I started working that week. It was a great job for a kid with almost no experience. It was that easy to get a job in the industry. What has Hollywood lost? The ability to hire someone because they seem like they have something. So many people with great ideas and talent are being bypassed because they don't have the mind deadening degrees. Hollywood is pretty much dead now. I can't believe I'm saying this but television, as in the great mini-series that are being produced by HBO etc... are the only things worth watching now.

The minute a college or university figures out there is a lucrative or popular job that too many "non degreed" people are getting, they create a pathway to a 'degree' that probably isn't needed to do the job in the first place. Yet if they can sell someone on the idea that a degree somehow makes the employee more 'valuable' then they win, making more money for their school while preventing entry of those who can't afford the education but would probably be just as good, if not better.

That’s where I first discovered her - in Smile! Great movie! Reminds me of Guest at his best! Aside from Waiting For Guffman, A Mighty Wind is my favorite of his. I love the variety of folk songs in it….Fantastic music. Almost like the many types of country music in Nashville. Glad Jamie had the wisdom to know a beautiful song would work better. A good reminder to listen to the music in our heads! The songs that came through Annette are perfect for this movie. And what a movie! I’m telling you, when I want to laugh, I go to RUclips and watch Jennifer Coolidge thank God for model trains and the couple explain their devoted worship of Color.

I had no idea she was involved with Mighty Wind. It's a favorite of mine, but I never bothered to look who wrote what song.
I bought the soundtrack to that movie right after I watched it. Still keep 'Potato's in the Paddy Wagon' in regular rotation on a few of my playlists too. Really great stuff and one of my favorite movies. I know most folks lean toward Best In Show or This Is Spinal Tap as Guest's best work, but I think Mighty Wind gives those a run for their money. I never sat down and put them in a list or anything, but if I did I'd struggle to rate them because they're all so good.

It's most unusual for a veteran actress like Annette (over 50 years in the business) to be Oscar-nominated as co-writer of a song "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from the movie "A Mighty Wind". If it hadn't been for the 9/11 terrorist attack this - her only nomination - would probably never have come her way. Fate works in such strange ways😏
