Settings stops on phases does not give you priority during casting spells. I learned this the hard way also. 😁😁😁

I have learned that pressing the phase button is not the same as full control. I had to learn it the hard way, too.

I know nothing about this format or higher-power formats in general. Are there any decks that are fun to play as and against?
Different people have different ways of enjoying Magic. I love high powered formats like Legacy and cEDH, but finding them fun for you it's more about the midset you arrive to the table than determined by the format itself. Trying them on Arena can be tough because of the Wildcard count, but continue checking what CGB does in Timeless, for Legacy and Vintage my #1 advise goes to check Bosh n Roll, and the best for cEDH is mons in his two channels cEDH TV (a theory and analysis focused) and cEDH TV Gameplays (descriptive matches with the thinking-process of the players like CGB does, but for a Competitive Commander table). Good luck on your journey, and don't be afraid to proxy everything to have fun ❤

Yes, the combat stops are only for those specific combat phases. He was doing it before attackers were declared so Ctrl+f was the only way to guarantee full control was held. If he'd waited until they declared attackers then the stop he set would have worked.

you're right in your end message that Timeless already sucks so what's the big deal if it gets ruined by Scam. but it's hard to to hope that they sort of make it not suck someday and Scam doesnt seem to be helping

CGB, I suffered with you in my soul from the bug of putting a stop on the phase not counting as Full Control... That's a terrible error from the Arena client that the Dev team left unadressed since the start but still makes us suffer like just bad Game UI does. I hope folks at WotC seeing this hit up at Studio X for a fix of this
Turn 0 free spells just doesnt really feel like magic to me. Mana is sorta what makes mtg:mtg.

As busted as Timeless is, I'm glad it exists. All those crazy overpowered cards need to be playable SOMEWHERE. Before Timeless you could do it in Direct Challenge and nowhere else, and I bet the vast majority of Arena players have enough friends to reliably be able to play with, let alone build decks for. If you can't run the card in any format, why does the card exist at all?
All that said.... I'm not burning my wildcards for this, the Arena economy is stagnant enough as it is.

Yeah, Timeless Is gonna be Evoke Elemental Abuse until they get banned. Between Grief+Reanimate+Dark Ritual abuse or 4c Beans+Revels abuse, anything else seems Just inferior.
