My friend, a legend was born here. From this moment on, always at the end of this Depeche Mode concert anthem, the fans along with Dave are waving their hands frantically from side to side. In the newer live recordings, it can be seen more beautifully, Dave usually spreads his arms like Jesus and also shakes hands with the fans below the stage. This literal ritual, with waving hands, reminds of the scene from the music video for this song, where the wind bends the stalks in the field. In Bratislava 2014, we also added lights from mobile phones, it looked like thousands of stars, which Martin sings about at the end. In the newer live version, Martin plays guitar, not keyboards, and together with Dave as a duet. If you have already seen this live, please make a reaction to the video Never Let Me Down live in Barcelona. This is probably the best recording of this song on video. It will blow your mind even more, I guarantee. I'll just add that this song is a concert anthem for Depeche fans and the band. And that the song is still a big hit, also thanks to the series Last of Us, where it was heard and again made it into today's charts all over the world. I look forward to your further reactions - ideally for the video I mentioned. Many thanks, greetings, all the best.

I was 17 when I went to this concert. This part of the waving arm…I can’t describe how much that affected me. Never seen anything like that at that point. The feeling was beyond description. and I’ve never felt anything like that again. It was mesmerizing. 70,000 people in unison. DM were so huge in Southern California at this time.

For 40 years I've been a fan of these guys, and for 40 years I have been waiting to find someone who has similar reactions to me, when listening to Depeche Mode. The goosebumps, the teariness, the joy, the sadness, and that indescribable feeling in your stomach when it all comes together in flipping awesomeness. I love this song, and I get goosebumps every time I see Dave and this crowd. What a frontman! Thank you so much for these reactions. As crazy as it may sound, seeing my own reactions in you brings me so much joy.

The part you never heard before is from the 12" version called Split Mix. It's over 9 minutes 30 seconds long, and you need to hear it, even if you don't do a reaction for it. Takes the track to a different level. It's a must-listen. Trust me.
There's also a version called Aggro Mix that has more of this bassline. Check both of them. You won't be sorry!

You forgot to mention that there's a long version of the music video featuring the same ending (as included on the “Strange” VHS, if my memory is correct)-though lacking the intro of the split mix: ruclips.net/video/ArzoJHdxMfo/видео.html
Also: I love the Tsangarides Mix. To me it sounds more like an alternative studio version-rather than “just” a remix. (-:

The coda of "Never Let Me Down Again" references "Torch" from Soft Cell. And the Split Mix are considered to be one of the last 12“ versions that Depeche Mode made themselves.

This song was the highlight of the gig that can be considered as the highlight of the band history - or at least one of their highlights. Definitely one of their biggest moments in history. The arm-waving of the crowd is part of all live performances of NLMDA since this very moment. Dave said later that it was a spontaneous action during this song at 101, because he saw someone in the crowd waving his arms and he just imitated it, and all of a sudden, everyone else in the crowd was into it. I'm so glad that this moment happend at a show that got filmed.
To answer some of your questions:
The album and the single version of NLMDA are almost identical, so it doesn't really matter which one you listen to.
The instrumental middle part is the so-called "Aggro Mix" of the song, it was on the NLMDA single. You can also hear it on the "Split Mix" version which is basically an extended remix of the song.

When Depeche Mode was interviewed about the songs on the '101' CD for the April 1989 issue of French magazine 'Best', Dave Gahan said (translated from French):
"For me, this is one of the most intense moments during the concert, firstly because this track has a very strong emotional charge, and every time I play it the waving goes well with the crowd. In addition, we were heading towards the end of the show and during this song, the stadium was on fire. When I saw the number of people there, I felt like crying. It was very moving."

I found your channel a few weeks ago and I love, how you react to the songs of Depeche Mode. Its always a pleasure, to see you and listen to your comments.
Today I wanna send you a comment.
"Never let me down again" in the "Rose Bowl", Pasadena. Wonderful and an epic moment of the bands career. Even the entire concert is a milestone and every fan, worldwide, knows about the magical night.
I heard, that the "waving arms animation" of Dave wasnt planned. It was more or less a coincidence. The Album "Music for the Masses" was recorded in parts in Denmark and it was spring. The grain on the fields was growing and it was still green in may. The wind goes through the field an the straws was waving. Maybe Dave remembered it and so became this gesture very popular until todays concerts.
Dave said in interviews after the concert, that he felt so much power and such a special connection to the crowd and he could have asked anything of them.
He also said, that they have to quit now their career, than it cant go better!
Thank God that they continued their career.
    Greets from Germany.
Ah, and you asked yourself, wich kind of poles or pool-noodles the audience hold in their hands. I think, this must be Posters...wrapped.

That concert had close to 100k at the Rose Bowl, I believe. I flew from Canada to London in 2017 to see then play at the Olympic Stadium. I had a VIP early entry ticket and set up my stuff right at the stage front. During the concert I looked back at the nearly 80k people behind me, and in the stands.... and was awestruck at the sea of hands when this played.

Back then, there were no smartphones, but the world wasn´t primitive. A friend of mine had his camera taken at the DM gig in 1998. Photographers were allowed to take pix during the first 3 tracks. That was a universal rule. Reading changed a lot. I actually bought two books last week. And I still buy a paper. But on the subway everyone is looking at their smartphones. My nephew and his buddies walk out of their school and they don´t do anything stupid. They have phones. As kids we were always in trouble. Making fires, organizing cycling races...the last climb was the end of a stage. And an idiot runs over my friend. The fucker had lame excuse...it was a one way street. Often one forgot the time. Be home at 6pm. Yes mom. Oh, going back all down because it was 8pm and the parents were there. At school history lesson. I say, my grandma and her sisters were hiding in a barn for three weeks even though the war was over. "Yes, there were groups of marauding Nazis..." No comrade, my grandma told me her father had them hidden because the Red Army was coming. Or why are you wearing a t-shirt that says Boston. Never again. "Yes comrade." So I put a Las Vegas t-shirt and thought I was in the clear. Nuclear war drills. Wrapped up in plastic we were jumping over a bench. "Comrade, it is a pity the kids in Hiroshima didn´t jump over benches, isn´t it.

Hearing this live (a few years ago in Prague) and ... well, not just hearing... experiencing it live, because you become part of the song, and especially when it's building up to the last part (and you know it's coming) where Dave enourages everyone first to raise their hands for a moment... and then you start waving in one direction with the 10 000+ crowd.. is one of those moments where you think: I can die now and everything's good. These moments (this... the Personal Jesus "Reach and touch Faith" chants) experienced live are probably the closest moments a sane drug-abstaining person could get to some sort of LSD [good] trip, I suppose.
Also a pretty crazy live version of this is One night in Paris from 2001! ... and a very moving version from Cologne 1998 (when DM literally rose from the dead and decided to throw a short tour again) captured by MTV!

Well, the second time I bought my first porn mag. I was 14. Wwould wait for German tourists buses to arrive and then offer to help with their luggage. That was the way to make some money.I was hungry for music but the regime was...well, they were fucking bastards. Still, there was this journalists who organized indie label music nights. And at this small club he showed music videos...The Cure in Orange, Depeche 101 etc. I 1989 i dicovered an Eastern German radio for the young on FM waves. I remember the day Personal Jesus was released. Iknew it would be that day. I sat by the radio waiting for it to come up and record it. Three months later the regime fell. Violator was released. The band went on tour but they didn´t go to any former communist country. tHEY had played in POland and Hungary in 1985, in Prague in 1988 (it was 6 months before I became hooked)...that 1988 concert was like the first concert of a big artist since Louis Armstrong played in town in 1972, I think. The venue was for 14,000. There were 200,000 applications for tickets. I was devastated they wouldn´t come in 1990. The Eurpean tour started and I heard of some people getting to a concert....cannot remembre where. "Mom, DM are playing in Berlin in 6 weeks, can I go?" Absolutely not. You are 16. Of course I went. Borrowed 100 Marks. My schoolmate didn´t come to the station...grounded. I travelled alone. Then spent the whole day freeting my nuts off in fron of Deutschlandshalle. Tickets were avaialble! For 300 marks on the black market., I met more fans from my country. During the day I walked around Berlin, then came back and froze...there was no chance...at 7:45pm I see Andy Franks, their tour manager. I knew his face from the 101 movie. He had his walkie talkies, he was super busy but I was super loud, screaming like I had a 20 inch long dildo up my ass...I caught his attention. Explained the situation. The band were not touring Easteren Europe, we had enough money for the official ticket price but..."Shup up", he said. "How many are you from Czechoslovakia". I countted quickly. Thirteen, sir. "Gimme five minutes". I was the only one speaking English so they asked me what it was all about..girls stopped crying, srtarted hugging, then started crying again...he won´t come...he will...girls started crying even louder. 7:50pm he´s coming back. Thirteen backstage passes in his hand. Everything was so hectic that I didn´t thank him until late 90s when I worked for Warners. He was in Prague as a tour manager for a different act. I thanked him, he couldn´ t remember, just asked if I got to see the show. To go back I tought I would a train ticket in Berlin. But the ticket that cost 3 Marks in Prague cost 60 in Berlin. Ispent the night in an appartement building by the dustbins. Walked towards the highways. This black guy stopped. We talked for two minutes and he wakes me up. We were in Prague. What about the border crosssing, the customs, I asked him? He told me, "man 20 officers were trying to wake you up but they gave up...". I came home and my mother asked, "so what were your Gods like?" She had known the whole time. Moms are fucking hard to lie to. Like my story? Now, go and listen to Violator, Songs and Ultra and I might, might...tell you about the Devotional concert in Prague in 1993. It involves half-empty venue, security chasing my friends, me opening my mouth and LSD on my tongue, more chasing..on the roof of the stadium...and an unplanned trip to the country where we (about a dozen people) all saw stars moving much faster than Einstein made us believe..wasn´t easy to be a Depeche fan in 1993...grunge and house parties were the scene...I suffered verbal abuse, ridicule...DM were uncool. Until they came the next time and the next and the next...Depeche is a unique phenomena. I´m not trying to tell you anything you didn´t know when you woke up today. Where are you from? And why do people film themselves listening to music? I guess this world isn´t for the old. The kids sell weed these days! It used to be a thing you gave and were given. This snotty boy told me today if I wanted to buy a gram. I have half a key at home from two old friends who live in the country. Now, get yourself to listen to post 87 Mode. Where are
      you from?

Great reaction again seph. The Paris live version takes it to another level and the arm waving is more in time these days as we have had a few years of practice. You missed the agro mix from music for the masses wich is probably why you didn't recognise it

Yes, it’s one of my favourites of all time.
The fact that it’s about heavy drug use, especially Dave’s love oh heroin, is lost on probably 90% of listeners

This is a dark Song. Mode are the only top end band that can make a tragedy sound uplifting.was there Twickenham June 17 2023. Sang in mono A and G. 2 step. Most bands search for one hook. In a song, hard to do. Mode throw it like confetti!

You are right, I don’t think this happens nowdays with phones and all that...Being in a Depeche Mode concert it's an experience that you can't barely have today. The first time I listened to them I was roughly 11 years old, now I'm on my late forties so you can say I grew up with them. And watching them live several times through my life it's one of the most amazing things that happened to me. The soundtrack of my life❤
    And Dave is yes, unique!

Honestly I think there were only a few other frontmen that could hold a croud as well as Dave! Freddy Mercury, and Chester Bennington and a few others! They were all born to be on stage!
