You would not want to lug around analog gear constantly from gig to gig. It has been done but why do that when midi controllers can do all of that and more? It is heavy and lots of parts to look after and banging it around, which can happen, can be bad for old gear. New gear is in general not built as well, but due to increased portability it is less likely to be damaged and since most of it is digital, it tends to always offer perfect performance unless damaged badly. You want reliability, instead of the niche of having real analog synths, especially being a world class band. 2. Analog equipment needs constant maintenance, especially vintage gear which may be hard to find parts for in a bind. 3. You do not want your equipment malfunctioning in front of your paying fans, which analog has and can do. 4. You can argue that you can never replicate the warmth of true analog gear, which may be correct in a sense. But with signal processors and the ability to add the warmth through analog and tube audio gear which is modern, this is more of a non issue and I bet their modern sound would be cleaner (does not mean you will prefer it though) compared to old concerts. 5. They still sell plenty of tickets nowadays, if they sounded worse than they used to that fan base would dwindle yet people keep coming to hear them. This should be your clue that they are just modernized yet viable still and I am sure they still sound amazing live. Edit: Just saw some footage from 2017, yep, they still sound very similar to the old days! As expected, a bit cleaner but the synth sounds sound the same as they always have, analog and awesome sounding. Non-issue! They still have the classic Depeche Mode sound.

Well, this video is about promoting Roland keyboards, not about Depeche Mode in general, and certainly not about promoting other companies' keyboards. You might have had a point if they had blurred, blacked out, or removed the other keyboards, but the Moog and the Access Virus were in plain view, so Roland weren't being petty, in my opinion, they just naturally focused on their own keyboards.

I believe Alan Wilder was a major part of that. RIP Fletch. You were the glue that held Depeche Mode together.
Most of the stuff is going in the background they are just using the midi controllers but it makes sense they can`t bring every analog synth on stage with them city to city .
They actually considered doing so a few tours ago, but ultimately decided that it would be impractical and not worth the effort. Many of the synths are too delicate, some are quite large, and they didn't have spares handy. It's not implausible, as Erasure managed to pull off such a stunt during their _Chorus_ tour (also known as Phantasmagorical Entertainment or The Tank, the Swan, and the Balloon), but the numbers of synths were limited (whatever Vince could pack into his mobile "tank" vehicle along with the sequencers) and the songs all had to be rearranged in a more minimal manner, which probably works better with Erasure's music than DM's.
Excellent tour of DM rig and love the insight into what they use for concerts. I am a big Roland synth fan and enjoy creating my own new wave beats at home on the wonderful Roland boutique synths.

Yes, but the way Alan play the drums suits perfectly to DM songs... Christian is great, also Peter,...I think it's just about styles. Personally I prefer Alan Wilder's style an arrangements. Nice work from these other two guys. To me is just a totally different band, very good...but not that great.
Gwenael Clause ...Just respect the opinions of other people...and show some respect to the man who create a lot of the great sounds and musical arrangement that made those songs awesome!!.. If you don't like other people's opinions just show some respect ..we don't need you to reply if you are going to do it like that. Cheers.
When Alan's played the drums it was subtle smooth on a basic kit Peter is a good drummer no doubt about it but dpm was about amazing synth sounds and now it sounds like any rock band and as I said before a more dark sound We can go on about this forever its all about are own opionions we all have them But at least Dpm are still evolving which is a good thing Some old fans dissappear and new ones arrive the circle of life
Roland - PLEASE may we have the iOS app back? It's an invaluable editing tool to use with the JP-80 and old iPads die or need replacing. You updated the Integra 7 to work with iOS 11! There would be a large contingent of very grateful JP-80 players out there....
Peter Gordeno and Christian Eigner don't destroy Depeche Mode's music. If Alan Wilder left the band it's not their responsibilty. When Alan Wilder left the band, Dave, Martin and Fletch had the responsibility. Alan Wilder leaved the band because Peter and Christian destroy their music? mmm i don't think so ;)
I strongly disagree, Gordeno is nowhere near Alan's touch on the piano, and Eigner betrays many songs with his hard rock like style. Now it s a question of taste, i m pleased that some do keep pleasure at listening to DM, which is my all time favourite, i just find that DM has now evolved into something that is far too main steam to me.
This is fantastic stuff , makes you appreciate how good a musician Peter is . Not to mention a good guy. Everyone misses Alan but Peter knows his stuff. Sometimes I'd prefer less impro but it's understandable he likes to put a bit of personality on a few bits
I took issue with Peter calling himself Depeche Mode in this video. I thought he was a background musician. I’m bummed to hear their Spirit album was partially written by Peter and Christian. So in reality, I suppose they’re officially members. A hard pill to swallow.
They're both shite and DM is not DM without Alan. I don't have fucks to give about these two twats. They will never be Depeche Mode. If I ever see them on a shirt, I will set the fucking thing on fire.
Interesting Peter, you mentioned the Outro in Cover Me, its truly great! Another Outro I always loved is the Outro of Clean from Violator, maybe you could pick that up and stretch it to a Massive Arena set!
I heard the concert and They should have left the original synth sounds alone. Those analog sounds are what made them. I could not bring myself to go in Michigan after hearing the concert. Why mess with perfection.
Virtual Era... When you've worked quite a lot with VST's, you know how far electronic music has gone... BUT, that's why I also try to play with real vintage synthesizers : it's all about sounds and feeling... :-) Anyway: I do like DM's work. Definitely my favorite group and electro sound... And, regarding to the amount of typical sounds they created, we have to admit virtual instruments are, by far, the best way to manage their concerts... Isn't it ? :-)
They have almost always used lots of different equipment to make their sounds, and for concerts they have mostly--even for most of the 1980s--played sampling keyboards in order to accurately reproduce the sounds. VSTs were mentioned in this video, but for all we know they could have been referring to virtual samplers running on computers.
I had figured this was going to be a throwaway piece and/or RK promo and I didn't watch it at first. But it's a very informative piece on the current state of Depeche Mode, actually.
Love Depeche Mode, Roland since we have your attention here please update the integra app it no longer works with IOS 11....it never made it past V 1.0 .....I have emailed and tried facebook but can't get a response. thank you.
Horses for courses, I suppose. I consider myself a massive Mode fan but definitely prefer the older stuff. The dynamic changed totally when Alan left. His contribution was never appreciated fully, I thought.
Coucou ! François-O. T.
¨spirit¨ written in coke letters, and the transitions are flasy triangels, roland are you a hollywood company now ????.. dammm wtfigo in the music today
I haven't heard "tattooed grease monkey" presenting Peter or Andrew...Just Q-Tip Gore, back and forth. As if the rest of the band didn't ex....Wait a minute ! That explain why Alan fucked-off.
I rather like the songs from the 80's and 90's. That's because i love synthesizersounds. DM's sound and style changed a lot over the last 20 years. Songs are often dark and synths are on the background or disapeared. In the 80's and 90's their music was more cheerful. So for fans of that era is a bit pitty they didn't continue with that style.
What are the controllers controlling? Can we know that or is it top secret stuff? I still have my Roland RD-200. It has semi-weighted touch. There's nothing like that today AFAIK. The midi out on it quit a while back but I paid to get it fixed rather than by a new keyboard.
I love how NOT Alan Wilder talks about himself and role as if he is even a member of this band. Ever wonder why you haven’t been made a member after like 15 years? Let me take a guess… In all that time you have written nothing, produced nothing and even live, you play a fraction of Wilder did. Please stop speaking on behalf of the band and just assume your role as dude who play what others created.
this is where the mighty andrew fletcher stands and i mean all he does is stand. notice his instruments are dusty and haven't been played--i keeeed, i keeeed.
I dunno about best ever, but DM is great, and Roland has recaptured their old magic. Definitely some of the best synths in the world. People should check out the JD-XA, it really is a monster that can make almost ANY synthesizer sound from synth history.
I came here to see real synthesizers and I got MIDI controllers, while the only real synthesizers were the Moog Voyager and the Virus, Hahaha, what a hack you people are..
i think, he should be made the new 4th member of the group. he deserves that. but i wonder maybe he doesn't wnt to. but it would be a good thing i think. actually i'm not too interested in those controllers, but what really churns out the sounds and how they are programmed.
Wow how many times can you say well I use it for mostly the pianos but everything else as well just repeat and repeat not very informative at all but I love Depeche Mode and Roland keyboards but this wasn’t a good interview
People say that alan wilder made Depeche mode, that is BS. Martin Gore made Depeche mode. Martin Gore wrote most of the lyrics and all the music after alan wilder left. Without Martin Gore there would be no DP.
@pearlsnaredrummer77 Well, demos are supposed to be basic and raw. If you want a fairer comparison between their respective musical abilities and sensibilities using finished songs, then compare the "Spanish Taster" version (Martin) to the album version (Alan) of "To Have and to Hold", as well as the "Harmonium" version (Martin) to the album version (Alan) of "Enjoy the Silence": ruclips.net/video/J4R_N_zWq3M/видео.html ruclips.net/video/2Le5Z8CjIzY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/eXN2jxZ7JF0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/m0AKJMGxwpE/видео.html Martin may be a master at writing melodies and lyrics, but musically he is rather limited overall, as you can probably tell. This was already obvious with _A Broken Frame_ , which was made after Vince left and before Alan started working in the studio. Vince, by the way, is also quite accomplished musically (albeit not much of an instrument player), and he added a lot to Martin's "Tora! Tora! Tora!" song in their first album. DM were lucky to find Alan after Vince left, and they haven't found anyone at this level of skill in arranging and orchestrating since Alan left, and it shows.
This guy has got it made, he gets to make a ton of cash with the band touring, he gets to write songs for the band which means he'll make even more money from album sales than even Andy Fletcher does, and because he's not an official member he doesn't have to do a single bit of gruelling promotion (with the exception of musician stuff like this, which he probably enjoys anyway)
Fletch gets a one-third cut of the total profits, though, while Peter is paid as a session musician, so with the song royalties (which he shares with Dave and Christian), it kind of evens out a bit. I bet Fletch gets paid more overall, though, as an actual, official member of the band.
@@rbrtck fletch gets more money from touring, but the most money you make in a band is from publishing, which goes to the songwriter, so he makes more money from the albums he wrote on, some bands split the money equally but Depeche Mode are not one of them
@@drexlspivey5828 As far as I'm aware, Depeche Mode split the ticket sales, record sales, video sales, merchandise sales, and everything else except for publishing (the composition copyright part of it) equally among the official members of the band, so who gets paid more between these two guys overall depends in part on how many songs Peter participates in the writing of, which, of course, is hardly all of them. I believe that Fletch additionally has a one-third cut of the sound recording copyright while Peter does not, which is ironic because Peter actually plays on the records, but Fletch is a member of the band while Peter is paid as a session musician. So it's hard to tell who gets paid more overall without hard numbers. I'm thinking it's probably Fletch because he gets a one-third cut of nearly everything, but for all I know, it might be Peter if the composition copyright is worth twice as much as everything else put together. This would imply that Christian Eigner and Andrew Philpott get paid more than Fletch, as well, and that Martin used to get paid the vast majority of what DM have made over the years. I don't know, but that doesn't seem correct.
@@rbrtck Fletch will get paid more overall but I was meaning specifically album sales which the session dude will definitely get more for if any of his songs are on them even if Fletch gets a performance royalty (as you said, rather ironically) But live the session guy won't get any cut of the profits, only a wage (but probably an extremely good one)
I wonder what kinda computers and software they are using with the midi controllers? Are they using Roland Cloud VSTs? What if the computer crashes during a show?
On stage DM use a lot Kontakt and Masive X. Only Peter use 2 analogue synth. Back in the days they was using a vsti hardware box, something like a Seelake AudioStation or a Muse Receptor With computer, they always have a second computer with an automatic switch

I think Martin Gore is one of the most underrated songwriters of all time.
Underrated by who??? gosh!
Underrated?
Martin Gore is a god who walks amongst us
love DM but to sit here and just show us controllers and a digital piano was useless to me VST was mentioned in one sentence and that’s it.
well then dont watch the video
You are really really gay

Excellent tour of DM rig and love the insight into what they use for concerts. I am a big Roland synth fan and enjoy creating my own new wave beats at home on the wonderful Roland boutique synths.

I know this is a Roland Channel, for Roland keyboards - Was super impressed btw!
But was I the only one who freaked out and went all fanboy when I saw that Access Virus TI2? Damn its pretty!
I know this is rolands channel, would of been nice to hear the whole rigs though.
Oh God! I miss Alan so much!
fabricio cantoni Alan is Alan
So glad Alan is GONE, baby, GONE! Peter Gordeno is a far better keyboardist.
Alan Wilder was a big part of all those classic hits.
Funny they kept jumping over the Access Virus TI. That’s a good synth too! Can’t wait for the Roland Jupiter-X though!! April 2020 🎧
@@lovesmyway Peter is a great musician, but Alan is PHENOMENAL and he was the best from Depeche Mode.
Amazing piano sound, just beautiful. Words from a piano and keyboard player.
the day a drummer appeared was the day it all changed
and as mentioned here alot
Alan was rhe man
Yes...it's not DM with a human drummer and yes Alan was the man!
He played drums on devotional tour so I don't know what this guy's mumbling about
Yes, but the way Alan play the drums suits perfectly to DM songs...
Cheers.
When Alan's played the drums it was subtle smooth on a basic kit
Peter is a good drummer no doubt about it but dpm was about amazing synth sounds and now it sounds like any rock band and as I said before a more dark sound
We can go on about this forever its all about are own opionions we all have them
But at least Dpm are still evolving which is a good thing
Some old fans dissappear and new ones arrive the circle of life
What’s the piano piece at 07:05?
Roland - PLEASE may we have the iOS app back? It's an invaluable editing tool to use with the JP-80 and old iPads die or need replacing. You updated the Integra 7 to work with iOS 11! There would be a large contingent of very grateful JP-80 players out there....
Very cool interview!
The piano version of Home that the guy play is amazingly beautiful..

Peter Gordeno and Christian Eigner don't destroy Depeche Mode's music. If Alan Wilder left the band it's not their responsibilty. When Alan Wilder left the band, Dave, Martin and Fletch had the responsibility. Alan Wilder leaved the band because Peter and Christian destroy their music? mmm i don't think so ;)
adriantino left not leaved)
Corrected, sorry my english I'm spanish
I strongly disagree, Gordeno is nowhere near Alan's touch on the piano, and Eigner betrays many songs with his hard rock like style.
Now it s a question of taste, i m pleased that some do keep pleasure at listening to DM, which is my all time favourite, i just find that DM has now evolved into something that is far too main steam to me.
GuiR3X agree, question of taste. The problem is that people hate Gordeno and Christian
i think some hate them because Alan was bringing something to DM, and i don't see any positive impact of Gordeno nor Eigner.
They are totally on vst. Thats awesome. Wonder what plugins theyr using!
It's practical, rather than awesome. Imagine touring with every synth they'd ever used to record with, and trying to keep the old ones going.
But Fletcher's synth's aren't plugged in! 🤔😂🕶🎶
fletcher is nothing to do on stage,, and also is pregnant...
Hey, lighten up on Fletch. He's part of the heart and soul of Depeche Mode, the glue that keeps them together xo
He clicks the play button
You should learn more about Depeche Mode.
This is fantastic stuff , makes you appreciate how good a musician Peter is . Not to mention a good guy. Everyone misses Alan but Peter knows his stuff. Sometimes I'd prefer less impro but it's understandable he likes to put a bit of personality on a few bits
This Peter guy is not Depeche mode. Can he please stop calling everything little, stop writing songs and just bring back Alan?!
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL!! And I can't wait for those quiet songs with Martin and Peter.
I took issue with Peter calling himself Depeche Mode in this video. I thought he was a background musician. I’m bummed to hear their Spirit album was partially written by Peter and Christian. So in reality, I suppose they’re officially members. A hard pill to swallow.
Why? They have been with the band since 1997 - they've earned their keep.
I'm bummed that _Spirit_ and for that matter _Delta Machine_ suck so badly regardless of who wrote the songs.
They're both shite and DM is not DM without Alan. I don't have fucks to give about these two twats. They will never be Depeche Mode. If I ever see them on a shirt, I will set the fucking thing on fire.
Depeche mode great band, love their music. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏👏🙏🏻
Interesting Peter, you mentioned the Outro in Cover Me, its truly great!
Another Outro I always loved is the Outro of Clean from Violator, maybe you could pick that up and stretch it to a Massive Arena set!
Die Piano Version von Home hört sich ja absolut stark an!! Das wäre doch mal was, die langsamen Hits als Piano-CD!

magical show and tour, fantastic memories, Im sad seeing AF in this video watching it now +5 years later. can't wait for the new tour announcement
I love behind the scenes insights and having been at the Prague show particularly like this one!
Alan 😇 es imprescindible para Depeche 👑 Mode
♥️♥️♥️♥️
A fantastic video with great insight, which was ruined by my inability to fixate on anything other then the nose-hair, in Peter's left nostril.
I always comeback here for 2:35
I heard the concert and They should have left the original synth sounds alone. Those analog sounds are what made them. I could not bring myself to go in Michigan after hearing the concert. Why mess with perfection.
A truly beautiful, rich piano sound
Virtual Era... When you've worked quite a lot with VST's, you know how far electronic music has gone... BUT, that's why I also try to play with real vintage synthesizers : it's all about sounds and feeling... :-)
Anyway: I do like DM's work.
Love Depeche Mode, Roland since we have your attention here please update the integra app it no longer works with IOS 11....it never made it past V 1.0 .....I have emailed and tried facebook but can't get a response. thank you.
Fletch plays keyboards? When did clapping become a keyboard? I’ve been to 5 DM concerts, All with Alan and they were the best.
One should have great respect for Peter Gordeno. But....never forgotten....Alan Wilder
Beautifull video 👍
Horses for courses, I suppose. I consider myself a massive Mode fan but definitely prefer the older stuff. The dynamic changed totally when Alan left. His contribution was never appreciated fully, I thought.
Roland moments are so marvellous
Coucou ! François-O. T.
¨spirit¨ written in coke letters, and the transitions are flasy triangels, roland are you a hollywood company now ????.. dammm wtfigo in the music today

Roland RDs are my favorites. I started with the XP80 then to the A-90s to the RD-700 to the 2000. Love em...👍💕

Nice to hear other keyboardists play and talk about their instruments.
I Miss Alan Wilder 🖤 :c

it would be great to have a official version.
Alan 😇 Please 🙏 come back 🙏 🙌 with Depeche 👑 Mode 🙌♥️♥️♥️♥️
He's gonna program a piano sound, 'by Madison Square Garden.' What. A. Tosser.
Such a responsabily to stay on side of "Alan Wilder" legacy. For me he's the keyboard mind that i was to have too, if could born Alan Wilder, oh God!
Why even make a division amongst the fans of one band?
You can’t play Somebody like a melted cheese. Givre us back Alan!!!
EMAX + Alan Wilder: Depeche Mode Sound.
Bore off
DM has more voices keyboard, please tell us more from another roland voices keyboard like JP, can be on JP 08 Boutique, good idea, not ? Great Job.
Let me take a guess…
In all that time you have written nothing, produced nothing and even live, you play a fraction of Wilder did.
Please stop speaking on behalf of the band and just assume your role as dude who play what others created.
Best quality gear on that stage is the Access Virus and the Moog, modern Roland gear is just lightweight characterless plastic shite
Back Alan, Out Flatch
this is where the mighty andrew fletcher stands and i mean all he does is stand. notice his instruments are dusty and haven't been played--i keeeed, i keeeed.
Eigner and Gordeno will never be a member of DM for the true fans even if 101 more years pass. .. and no matter how much effort they make.
My favorite Band & Synthesizer company in one video! A+++ DM & ROLAND - THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!
Hey! Found you again! Maybe similar tastes :D
I dunno about best ever, but DM is great, and Roland has recaptured their old magic. Definitely some of the best synths in the world. People should check out the JD-XA, it really is a monster that can make almost ANY synthesizer sound from synth history.
I know you ;)
As are you homie.
People, if you don't know Perry Safer, you should! He is a mastermind synthesizer player and programmer! :)
it is so easy today, i remember the days of the Emulator I and II, Jupiter 8 and DX7 1984.
Does DP mean double penetration here, too?
@pearlsnaredrummer77 Well, demos are supposed to be basic and raw. If you want a fairer comparison between their respective musical abilities and sensibilities using finished songs, then compare the "Spanish Taster" version (Martin) to the album version (Alan) of "To Have and to Hold", as well as the "Harmonium" version (Martin) to the album version (Alan) of "Enjoy the Silence":

Martin may be a master at writing melodies and lyrics, but musically he is rather limited overall, as you can probably tell.
Jd-xa and system 8 are great synths. ....there's no doubt about it.. ...and DM is the greatest band ever. there's no doubt about it.
Maaaar tin😊😃
Who in the fuck is this Peter Gordeno?! Bring back, Alan Wilder!!!
@@rbrtck Fletch will get paid more overall but I was meaning specifically album sales which the session dude will definitely get more for if any of his songs are on them even if Fletch gets a performance royalty (as you said, rather ironically)
But live the session guy won't get any cut of the profits, only a wage (but probably an extremely good one)
Alan will always be greater than Fletch, Peter and that drummer combined.
I wonder what kinda computers and software they are using with the midi controllers? Are they using Roland Cloud VSTs? What if the computer crashes during a show?
On stage DM use a lot Kontakt and Masive X. Only Peter use 2 analogue synth. Back in the days they was using a vsti hardware box, something like
a Seelake AudioStation or a Muse Receptor
With computer, they always have a second computer with an automatic switch
I just bought my first keyboard BK-3. I'm excited to get the best of it!
I heard you saying "cannabis stuff"...but sub titles says "piano stuff"
I bet one culd make some great rave/acid underground track with those synths :)
