    It's rare to see a band member who is really a fan of his own band. His collection shows how much he loves Depeche Mode.

      @@xav9258 - A pretty judgmental statement. I am certain he has his reasons for selling his memorabilia collection. And, whatever the reason(s) may be, that is his business. And, how do you know if other popular artists have not auctioned their memorabilia collection? I can probably name a few.

      @@lolam.9291 Alan gave some of his reasons in these videos, although I think the main instigator for this auction was what he told a reporter separately, which is that he was going through an "ugly" divorce and had to sell a lot of his things off to finance it. Now, it doesn't make sense, purely in terms of money, that he had to sell his musical instruments and collectibles. He didn't absolutely need that limited amount of money, per se, but what does make sense is that he was forced to sell his beloved home (that's a fact--it was put on sale 12 years ago, and sold for £4.5 million, which is about $5.5 million today), which was huge enough to contain all of the things he owned and had collected over the years.
      Alan had to move into a much smaller home after his divorce settlement, so what makes the most sense is that he could no longer physically accommodate all of his stuff (and he is definitely the collector type--without the giant mansion he used to live in, he'd have no room left to move around at home, and be considered a hoarder!). And also, when asked which charity the proceeds of the auction were going to, he said that Alan Wilder was the "charity", so I guess while he didn't need the money, he still found £200,000 or so (about $240,000) too much to give away. Alan's reasons are his business, of course, but some of them are known things that he has stated in public.

    Maybe [nope] the biggest crime of Depeche Mode is that the existing members did not fight for Wilder's stayed membership. Whether they admit it or not, the band suffered for his absence. The perfect sound was always between Gore, Gahan, and Wilder. Such a shame.

    I have a huge respect for Alan. It was actually him who won me for Depeche Mode on the hot summer day in 1984, when I first heard The Landscape is Changing. I was riding my new bike and his track was running through my head for that day and days after. And I wanted not to forget it and keep it replaying in my head.

    It's always nice to see another side of people and what their interests are. From what I've read, the reason he left the band was that he put a LOT of extra time and work in the studio, fine-tuning the sounds and felt underappreciated. He is SO talented and it is a shame that they couldn't have stayed together. I Love DM! 💗

      And what journey DM would follow without Alan

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck Год назад +3

      Before joining Depeche Mode, Alan was a session musician and studio/production assistant who was also in one band after another. His talent would always give him opportunities, but most likely he would have ended up like many other highly talented session musicians: helping many successful bands make their records, or in some cases even perform live (like Peter Gordeno), but never becoming a member of one (Peter isn't actually a member of DM, of course), which takes more than talent, it takes things like "charisma" (which sometimes means acting wild on stage while having no talent, like Sid Vicious) and/or plain, dumb luck (e.g. Fletch, sorry, RIP our beloved Clapper). Alan might well have become a producer eventually, which he pretty much was as a member of Depeche Mode, anyway.

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck Год назад +1

      @@viliamvanko4257 That's really hard to guess at, obviously. The band would have been significantly diminished without Alan from _Construction Time Again_ onward, like they were after he had left. But Martin's songs were stronger from the 1980s through the mid-1990s than later, and Gareth Jones was the guy who got them started on samplers and additive synthesis, including the use of Daniel Miller's Synclavier, so they would still have been quite innovative. I think, and this is just a wild-assed, biased guess, that Depeche Mode would still have been successful, with Martin's and Dave's talents and the support of Miller and Mute Records, but not as successful as they were in real life with Alan, especially in the US. Sometimes bands just need good luck and timing, but with Depeche Mode, so many fans are really into the sound and music, which set them apart from everyone else, and Alan noticeably enhanced what Martin composed.
      I really don't think that Depeche Mode would have failed, like they didn't after Vince left. Vince would also find great success of his own, not just because of his own considerable talents, but because he found the right people to complement what he had to offer. Depeche Mode still had Martin and Dave, and that alone gave them huge potential, but without Alan, they would have been missing a piece of their puzzle, so it's hard to imagine that they would have been quite as successful without him, and certainly not as good, in my opinion.

      +Laksmi Devi Maybe he doesn't want to return to DM. And maybe the band don't want him back too. You know,they've found a new way of working,with Dave writing songs and sharing duties with Martin etc. So...

      Gahan101 Yes, for sure you re right. I can understand, as an artist, that sometimes you need to do different things and work with different people. I was just exoresing my deep feelings for him and all his wonderful music with DM !
      .

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck 8 лет назад +5

      +gahan101 I don't think he'd ever rejoin the band as a member, but I wouldn't entirely rule out a major collaboration sometime in the future. Dave has stated very earnestly on more than one occasion that he misses Alan's contributions, and the other guys showed no signs of disapproval. The passage of time and their age have a way of changing perspectives, and Alan has already appeared on stage with DM for old time's sake (one song, "Somebody") as well as remixed for them, all of which turned out great. Perhaps the band will eventually consider hiring Alan to produce an album for them, for example.
      As for distributing the workload, Martin has had to do more work than before, but that's OK because when Alan was around Martin had reportedly done only a minimal amount of work after the songs were written; Martin has grown quite adept at using synths, as well. As for Dave writing songs now, that is a separate matter, I believe, and beyond the monetary aspects, he wanted to sing for himself, too, under the DM banner--it has nothing to do with Alan leaving, especially as he hadn't written a DM song for many years at the time anyway. And as for his presence on stage, there are Peter (keyboards) and Christian (drums), of course, albeit they are not official members of DM.

    • @gahan101
      @gahan101 8 лет назад +6

      I wouldn't mind Alan producing DM someday. But i think Martin have quite some pride(not in a bad way)and would hardly want him back with them cos maybe he wouldn't want people to think he admits some kind of "weakness" in their music since Alan left and thus,taking him back to gain something they used to have,musically.
      But these are just speculations here that can't be taken as absolute thruths,since we don't know shit ;)

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck 8 лет назад +3

      gahan101 Exactly, we don't and can't know for a fact what they're really thinking, although like I said they have gotten together a couple of times now, and additionally Alan indicated in a subsequent interview that it felt as though he had never left, and that they'll probably get together again for something. Take that as you will, but some people mellow out with age, and these guys don't have as much to prove anymore, which can help overcome their sense of pride. I figure that Alan will never rejoin, due to the reason you've given as well as Alan's own sense of pride, but they have grown closer of late so maybe something will come of that.
      Heck, Martin recently collaborated with Vince Clarke of all people on a little techno side project (VCMG). I never would have guessed that would happen. And Martin actually collaborating with anyone in writing songs (albeit only instrumental in this case)? I never thought I'd see that, either.

    • @rbrtck
      @rbrtck 5 лет назад +10

      Right, and more than a bit, in my opinion. Alan's skill set and musical sensibilities were a particularly good match for Martin's songs. Martin may be a genius songwriter and composer, but musically he's all about melodies and to some extent making interesting sounds on synths--on his own, and even with help from skilled producers, his music is very, very basic. Even Vince's early songs on their first album are deceptively simple, and have a kind of rhythm, "groove", tension, and harmony that Martin's have always lacked (Vince got even better at this, too, during the early 1990s with Erasure, while Martin never has)--he needs someone like Alan (and ideally Alan) to make the most of his songs, and of course what Alan did made DM what they were musically, and definitively so. They still haven't found anyone on nearly this level to help them. Their records keep selling and people keep coming to their concerts, but musically they have been greatly diminished since Alan's departure.

    I sometimes find it difficult to watch these kinds of videos because they make me sad thinking about how Alan left the band, in my mind still the only Depeche Mode that exists is the one with Alan in it. But it struck me how much he must've cared and still cares about his time in the band to have meticulously kept all of these things. I think maybe some people got the impression because of his at times aloof or cool manner, and the fact that he left Depeche, that he thought he was better than the band or something. I think the other members took his contributions and efforts for granted, if anything he probably cared too much while the others were happy to go off on holiday or a bar while songs were being mixed and such.

      Regarding Alan Wilder, I think it was always the person possessing the strongest musical training of four members of the best creative time of DM. Personally, I consider him responsible for the sonic richness, innovation and search for new textures and horizons, which then would be reflected in subsequent albums. It was a great loss his departure from the band. Undoubtedly, Depeche Mode went on, and wonderful way, but... with Alan on board was marked a noticeable difference.

      @@bucksatanII Update: sadly, Alan did have to sell his house to settle his divorce, after all. It sold for a little over $5 million, so we're looking at about $5.5 million for the house and this auction, combined. I don't know what other investments he might have had, or how much cash, but it's starting to look like his net worth is in the single digits of millions, and not necessarily on the high side of that. That's getting pretty close to what a working stiff can earn and accumulate over his career--a professional working stiff like, say, an engineer, but still just a working stiff, not a rock star.

      @@ReneAlexisPenalozaMunoz Alan Wilder is a genius, no doubt about that. The way in which he created unique sounds, the arrangements, the mixing, editing, sampling, and his unique style of playing the piano and synthesizers confirms this

      I was there also! I saw Depeche Mode twice on that tour, first in San Diego then at the Rose Bowl with my wife to be, and yes that was our greatest date. It was the best show ever, and also the biggest food fight I was ever witness to.
      I recently purchase an EMax sampler and have Alan’s samples. It’s great fun, the Emax still sounds awesome after all this time...

    Can't see this happening. Wish somehow Alan was back as one of the key elements of DM. It is sad still that he is separated from one of the best bands ever. Yep, crap,,, Alan was more as DM than vince, made DM stand out. Love Vince. He cracked on brilliantly creating new other bands, music etc. Alan is very key to DM. It is like buying your favourite curry knowing it's lacking certain ingredience that made it such an awesome dish. Alan = missing jigsaw :/ x

    Does anyone know what "Other" disks might be available from Alan's collection? I learned how to play piano/keyboards at 14 on by playing along to every DM album with a budget Yamaha PSS-460 synth. Would love to get access to the Black Celebration tour disks/sounds and/or back tracks to play along again. BC was the first time I saw DM live at 15 years old at Irvine Meadows in CA,USA, then I was also at 101. The MFTM/SOFAD sounds are the holy grail, but my inner child would love those 86 and older sounds they played live not on the auction disks. Thank you if someone in the know is reading this message and can respond.

      I don't think this was about money. He still gets his share from every thing they did from 1983 to 1993. They had a 25‰ agreement. He's not getting money from current live performances but he has production credits that entitles him to get those old earnings.
