I think this song is one of the greatest Christmas songs ever written and performed. Kate Bush is a living legend and a "one in a million" singer/song-writer .

This is the only Christmas song I have ever liked
Kate never intended to record this, she wrote it initially to sing to her family at Christmas as a musical gift. Lucky for us they encouraged her to record it and release it as a single.

@@sebastianward324 No joke. I'm a certified Kate fanatic! LOL. I was reading scanned copies of Kate's old fan magazine "Homeground" from the early 80's. I don't know the volume number off hand, but there was an article written by Kate, and she said she composed the song to sing and play to her family during their Christmas celebrations one year as a sort of present. The family liked it so much that they insisted she record it, which she did a few years later.

Released in early November 1980 not late November 80 which is when most Christmas songs are released and dropped to 20 on Christmas week 1980.

The simple but evocative chrismassy instrumental scoring when the chorus kicks in. Her voice soaring up to signal the outro of the song. The understated guitar solo + anthemic nature of the outro. The hypnotic repeat and fade aspect etc,etc. Basically, it's a beautiful song.

Agreed, it's a largely unheard masterpiece. But for us Kate devotees it doesn't matter, we recognise the genius and love it. The unenlightened will discover it in due course.

I love the way the song constantly changes all the way through.. I know she does that with all the songs she writes. Makes a change from just one melody all the way through as with most songs. I live next door to Tori Amos (she has the next farm across from me in Bude, Cornwall).. she idolises Kate and loves this track too!

I really wish this beautiful song was recognised (in my opinion) as one of the best Christmas creations ever, and yet it's very rarely aired. I remember hearing this when it was first released and as usual Kate created the unusual. It's a masterpiece!

megan collins I found it today on iTunes (Belgium) for the first time on the album ‘The other sides’. On Spotify, there’s only a selection of that album available, and unfortunately it doesn’t include this master piece.

I’d been diagnosed , unexpectedly with hiv in the November, the day I moved state and started a job new office, never knowing a soul I developed PCP pneumonia and spent the week and a half in a new city , utterly alone in my diagnosis , in a quarentine ward of the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on Xmas day, crying on the floor to this and dull tool by Fiona apple. That was Xmas 2012, that bundle of shit combined with a pretty scary meth habit that allowed me to hide in dark spaces long enough to fool myself into thinking the sun had forgotten my name , I’ve lost half of my face to a savage cancer , just over the five year cusp. This November the 12th will be officially the end of the cancer recovery period , to put the last little totem from yesterday into that little drawer , lock it with an impossible key before I turn to face the sky with one last year and know truly , December will be magic again :)

Fantastic and beautiful early Kate Bush track, another masterpiece musically but was never released on any albums, deserves far more plays at Christmas than it receives
+derbyshireracing She told actor Stephen Fry that she never ever wanted this track released at all, it was something she wrote as a surprise for a Christmas family gathering being planned by her brother Paddy.. so this almost didn't get recorded at all. I love it too, and it does feature on a number of Christmas compilation albums.

Just discovered this - fantastic animated representation of one of my fav December tracks!
I hadn't heard this version in years until recently. I can remember my Dad taking me down to the record shop in town & buying the single which was this exact version (minus the recent addition of Tim Burton of course). I remember the cover design & how mesmerising the reindeer's face was & I recall the Never Forever album design having the same effect on me. I would play this song endlessly on my Mum & Dad's record player & to this day, her otherworldly enchantment still has the same effect... beautiful & it is the epitome of Christmas.

From the first time I heard this song, it's always sounded, for the lack of a better description, like "witch music." I don't even know what that is, but it seemed fitting for some reason. Must be the bizarre arrangement with the incorporation of minor chords and Kate's incredible vocal range, hitting the high register. It's unique in every way.

What’s amazing is there are three different versions of this. This one. The stripped down Christmas special version with no backup vocals and the red chair “bongo” version. They are all great. This one has a different melody on the “December will be..” part
