kate showing us how its done yet again. a christmas single with no commercial value just like the rest of her work, if you want to hear it you will find it. never made a song for hits or record charts otherwise we wouldnt be hearing such art. wish some of todays "artists" would write songs without catchy commercial value being the central focus which leaves us with boring cheaply produced hits that are made for a cheque and are forgotten in weeks. kate never let the industry or money effect her art which is why its always been so unbeatable

Funny. I was the same age then. My cousin bought the single although he never had been a Kate Bush fan.

This is an under-rated Kate Bush song!
Very underrated song. Not even in the British or US Top 100 Xmas songs. And zero air play. To be fair, this is a diff version from the single & only accidentally was even released. That said, I’m sure there are “ experts” who don’t think it’s “Christmassy” enough. So this stays buried while we get to hear another 10,000 plays of “All I want for Christmas is You”. 🙄
Kate, at the piano, singing live. What could be better. No auto tune, nothing flashy, just Kate and a couple of her band members. This really is perfection.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've never heard of this song before but after hearing it just once Im hooked and I thought I was a fan of the brillant Kate Bush and I was 10 when I first heard her magical voice on TOTP singing Army dreamers.. how on earth is this gem not on the airwaves every Xmas and it was released in 1979...Kate.. your are a musical genius.

army dreamers also introduced me to the magial realm of kate bush. couldnt believe how someone could write and sing a song on a difficult subject at just the age of 16. she never wanted to be a celebrity just wanted to express her vision. she kept the mystical old english theme alive and i think some people get scared by her ghostly enigma or either adore it

One of the (many) things I regret about growing up in the USA is that Americans overall have never given this artistic magician the attention she so richly deserves.
This song came into my mind today. Still not sure why, other than perhaps the obvious - we need all the magic we can get these days.
I would say that I prefer the 1980 studio version... but... the 1979 version has such a beautiful, simple beauty to it.
I think it’ll be my new first-Xmas song from now on.

I was 10 in 79 and she was in my dreams... while everyone my age was into Blondie..,...her voice just transports me every time
One of three or four Christmas songs that still give me shivers in 2021. I watched this Christmas special fascinated and mesmerised by her and I still am. I taped the entire show on a National Panasonic tape recorder and played it constantly until it literally wore out!
My then 18 year old imagination filled in the missing visuals and if it is at all possible to fall in love with someone you have never met or spoken to, I did.

When I first heard this song, I was working in a bookstore in Texas. A coworker knew it as 'the Papa DiGiorno song,' and after the novelty of his nonsensical lyrics faded a bit, it took a few listens to train myself to hear what she's actually saying.
It quickly became one of my favorite Xmas songs.

The first EVER Kate Bush song I heard as a four year old on my parents Christmas compilation tape in the 80's ...it's one of the most magical songs I've ever heard....so many good memories attached to this song....magnificent :-)

Certainly should have got a damn sight higher than #29, that's for sure. Inexplicably it didn't get a TOTP appearance, not on the 4-12-80 show when it entered the top 40 nor the following week, even more inexplicably when it got into the top 30 at #29. The following week it went down a place and that was that. Had it got a TOTP outing I'm convinced it would have got into the top 10 as KB was probably at the peak of her popularity then.
