- This is a special on the United Kingdom's official TV network. I dare not speak it's dread name, as that's how videos are found and deleted. Never mind, of course, that there are NO Kate videos currently available for sale.
I assembled this version from a number of copies of different quality. Then I hand-painted out a huge number of drop-outs (though I did miss some - sorry). Finally, I replaced the VHS mono audio with the audio from the "It's Christmas" CD.

Really wish this version of the song was more widely available. So underrated.
It's on 'It's Christmas' on EMI (1989). Had this on cassette since 1990 but tracked the CD down a couple of weeks back. Got the single, but the mix is rubbish compared to this version...

These days it's the other version that gets played. Can you tell me where this version comes from. Was it the original recording or an alternative take? I agree, it's the best version.
This is the only version I thought existed as it was on a mini disc (yes, mini disc) my parents had of Xmas songs they played every year

I am a straight male in my 40's, and I am not or will ever be ashamed to admit I am a Kate Bush Fan, in fact some of her music has helped me through some tough times in my past and I would like to thank Kate for this
straight male in my 20s here and kate was the first female artist i respected more than any other artist male or female. i never would have thought id be a diehard fan of a female artist but that doesnt even apply to kate she is a one in a century genius and havent found another artist that can match her songwriting or boundary breaking production sounds since

This is one of my favourite Christmas songs, loved it when I saw it on TOTP and ever since, she has a uniquely evocative way with words and music, quintessentially English somehow.

Yep! This was the defining Christmas song of my childhood. So mystical and slightly creepy. Nothing beats this one

We grew up with Kate Bush's music and I feel privileged and a little bit special to have done so. The father away we get from these times the more genius you realise artists like Kate Bush were. I heard this song for the first time just a few years ago (I'm in my 50s now) and I'm shocked at how much we took for granted. Hearing music as impossibly magical as this and thinking it was normal! Seeing Kate in her PJs , warbling along, stroking her chair to a mesmerising cocophany of magic, aggression, drums and chanting in an ecclectic cadence of high and low vocals where your not entirely sure who is singing who: is she channeling the song? or fighting with her music?
Either way, this isn't normal. There is no template for this. And she calls this a a Christmas song!?
My middle sister passed away last year. I'm not sure but I wish she would have heard it. Maybe she ahead of me already, listening to magical ethereal music like this in a place where it would be considered normal..
we are lucky to be in the same lifetime as kate, she is beethoven level of timeless, but maybe thats what happens when you get a truley skilled artist that puts their art before profits or fame

The official release was a different recording (or at least a very different mix), and was released as a single. When the "It's Christmas" compilation was released, the person assigned to collect the tapes to assemble the compilation grabbed this recording from the Abba Winter Snowtime Special instead of the single version. If that mistake had not been made, we'd have never gotten this version on CD - and I'd never have been able to replace the audio on this video.

I really think that without the beauty she created and the worlds she opened to my young mind, I would never have survived an abused adolescence… Survived in the most literal sense you can imagine. I doubt she ever reads this, but nonetheless… Maybe, without her, I would not be here today. Wheteher that's a good or a bad thing, well, I'll let others judge !

She's a 50 year old mother. She doesn't spend 3 hours a day trying to maintain the body of an 18 year old like Madonna does - and frankly I wouldn't want her to. I'd rather have her spend the time working on music.
That said, it's attitudes like yours that are the reason she didn't do any TV appearances or even interviews for the last album "Aerial" or any videos other than "King of the Mountain" (aka "the ELVIS video").

I spent a lot of money about 18 years ago to purchase a video cassette filled with rare video clips and this was one of them - but it was horribly degraded and hard to make out. But still, I watched it over and over, mesmerized by this version with the bongo drums and alarmingly magnetic performance by Kate. What a treat to see it so clearly for the first time.
She can brighten up the dullest day. December 2018 is magic again after seeing this.

Takes me back to childhood, when I was little, every year my mum would put on her christmas album cassette tape and this version of the song was on it. Stuck with me ever since. Listening again I totally forgot about that chanting at the start, when hearing it again, it took me back to my childhood
Different version than the single. I prefer the single one frankly. But this is quite beautiful. Saw her on Saturday Night Live in 1978 and fell in love then. Still in love 45(!) years later.

This is actually the original version Kate intended for a Christmas 1979 single, but Christmas snuck up too quickly it seemed, so the song was held over for the 1980 Christmas season, but was later re-recorded with lots of layers of sound. The single failed as no one was in a holiday mood with John Lennon's death in all the headlines.

Here we are are into a new month December time for the festive classic and novelty tunes to come out of the box ,get dusted off and get airplay. Wonder how many times I get to hear Kate's now timeless 1980 classic hit get played this month .Along with her all her other songs it's a classic masterpiece ,I'm glad I still have my copy of this on vinyl in its picture sleeve .

Love this song very nostalgic
...of video (a still didn't look right). The hardest bit was actually syncing the audio. The original had a slightly different speed. So I took the videotape audio and the CD ripped audio and loaded both into Adobe Audition and kept applying different amounts of time stretch until the peaks matched, then exported the time-corrected audio back to the videotape.
The hand-painting out the dropouts was just tedious. Two tools that made it work were a Wacom tablet and a Shuttle Pro.
I'm straight, but I really don't like that word. I know all about "reclaiming" words, yadda-yadda, but it has such ugliness that I really don't want to see it.

I love Kate and everything she has done. Some of her songs took a while to grow on me but when they did, they became huge favourites of mine. I think she's wonderful :)

@SonattaMorales yeah, I think everyone does! Like you probably know, unfortunately, she doesn't even like people recognising her on the street most of the time. I don't blame her though. I think she could have been so ultra famous (up with the beatles) if she had liked her fame and done more tours, etc. She had the potential but really she didn't want that. A nice life in the country is much better anyway. :)

Kate, like all songwriters, has some favorite chord progressions. The DVD "Hounds of Love: Under Review" features a piano player who points out that many of the songs are the same three chords.

Definiety do. Lionheart and Never For Ever were not released in the US until after The Dreaming. I actually have an LP of Never For Ever that was ready for release and shipping, but EMI canceled the release and destroyed the copies. I have one of those. Also have a poster for the aborted release with a tag line about "Featuring the hit single Never For Ever!" - which was deleted from the album by Kate.

I've always been fascinated with Kate's music. It blends so whimsy and nostalgia captures the essence of the song 💖
I long ago gave up trying to introduce other people to Kate's music...it's telling that a huge percentage of Kate's American fans these days are gay men, a group that has no problem with camp or over-the-top performances.
The older I get the more I love her !. I've loved Kate since the age of 18 years old .🌹🌲🌹
I used Discrete's Combustion as the main tool. I laid one copy down as a background layer and second copy over that as a foreground one. I had to stretch one copy a bit to fit as analog videotape tends to vary in horizontal width and timing. Then I used the Clone brush to copy from the worse quality copy without dropouts to the better quality copy that had dropouts. The original beginning had a transition from another performer, so I covered that up by building a fade-in and looping a short bit
Ha, I can answer that, I'm the wife. He had put an ad in a local freebie music paper: "Kate Bush fan with record, videos, would like to meet other Kate Bush fans." I had been a Kate fan for a couple of years and hadn't met any other Kate fans in real life (only pen pals) so I answered the ad. We started off as friends and fell in love. Still both Kate fans. It's nice having someone who won't yell when you want to put a huge Kate poster up in the front hallway (and who'll take you to England!)
