I’ll never rent a car from Hertz, ever! Shame on them. What an evil company they’ve become.
I use to rent cars from hertz’s in the 80’s.
My family nearly rented a car from them during December, as there was absolutely nobody else that had a rental minivan available. They wanted $1500 for 3 days for some low-end Chrysler minivan. Told my dad it wans't worth it and to forget going anywhere. Glad we dodged that bullet.
They aren't evil. These are gangstalking criminals
@@Blueoriontiger I own a home in Bonita Springs, FL as well as Ohio. We generally fly down into Fort Myers and rent a car. This past Christmas, could not locate a rental car for miles. My wife and I flew into Tampa 2 1/2 hours North so we could rent a car. Thank goodness my daughter's boyfriend let us use his companies discount or it would have been $1,500 for 5 days. Ridiculous.
The sad part is people will see these stories and still rent cars from them.

Officer "I can book you into the worse county in the entire United States right now." Again for the 10000000th time, anyone surprised by cops abuse of power? And that simple statement is an abuse of power. It is a threat and scare tactic that is too common. The cop cannot handle a sarcastic comment by an old man who happens to have a receipt on his phone for the car. How many car thieves do these cops encounter that go through the trouble of creating fake Hertz receipts?

The Police Officer involved in this situation with the former officer was unpleasant, unprofessional and aggressive in his handling of this situation. Hertz Customers need to sue the company for falsely arresting innocent people.
This type of stuff happened to me all the time in Augusta, Ga on the Richmond County Sheriff’s office. I was on the force and was pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt a few times. Problem was I was always wearing it and didn’t have tent on my windows. When your not in the uniform or don’t have a badge to flash anybody can get it. SMH
being the son of a cop, I wouldve kept being a smartass and went after his badge after the fact

This is so egregious! In my opinion a Federal judge should issue a cease and desist order on Hertz to halt all business activities until this matter is corrected.

One guy was in jail for SEVEN MONTHS! because hertz just stopped providing documentation to the court, so the guy had to plead guilty JUST TO GET OUT OF JAIL
I would have held out and sued for at least 2 mill.

Yes, a cop has the responsibility to ensure the car is actually stolen before arresting someone for stealing a car. It's not hard, it's just extra work which cops are too lazy to do.

They don't HAVE to arrest the man if there is clear evidence that the man is innocent.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that Hertz gets some kind of insurance money to cover "stolen" property.
They have to file a police report to get the insurance company to pay for a stolen vehicle. The problem is Hertz files a police report before even calling the customer or calling a tow company to perform a repossession. Combine this with their long term rentals being heavily marketed and the customer is a day late on a monthly payment and the company files a report.
Unfortunately the company isn't interested in notifying the police that the customer returned the vehicle. So there are vehicles in the national database that Hertz reported several years ago when the car was 2 days late but every customer since has been at risk of being arrested.
Consumers should be advised to check the vehicle VIN with the free stolen vehicle search tools online. It only takes a few seconds.

That's smart, to check the VIN, or to ask the Hertz Rep if the vehicle you may leave with to look up if the vehicle has Ever been reported stolen, Before you rent it or drive off with it.
This is just crazy. It could possibly get someone killed.

I rented from Hertz once. Lousy customer service, rude reception, treated me like a potential criminal during the vehicle pick-up process. I took detailed pictures of the vehicle in front of them so that they can't come back and make claims for scratches. I returned the car early just to close the contract and get away from this slimy company. Never again.
Simple solution: Hertz is banned from filling ANY lost vehicle reports with authorities; small claims court is their only recourse, problem solved.
Simple solution: Boycott Hertz.

This is so criminal by Hertz. They should be ashamed for their business practice. I also didn't appreciate the communication of that first Police Officer exchanged to the man they had detained, when he was not convicted of any type of crime. You don't inflect verbal threat to a person that has not even seen the courtroom. But that's a whole different subject outside of Hertz.

While I do not condone the officer's attitude, the civilian being questioned needs to not let their frustration leak over and get snippy with the officer either. Civil conversation is a two-way street.

This happened to my husband and I in 2001 with another major car rental company. In Palm Springs. CHIPS stopped traffic both ways on the highway, and four CHIPS cars surrounded us with guns pointed at us and police dogs ready to attack. We were handcuffed, and we had to kneel in the dirt and rocks, then frisked and put in two separate police cars. Monitor showed our names with grand theft larceny. Car was reported stolen by rental company. Whole ordeal took well over an hour. Our knees were cut up from kneeling. They let us go when they found out that rental company had gotten the car back a month before, but never let the police know so it could be removed from police database. We called rental company immediately. They did nothing. No sorry, nothing. We sued them...and won. We still have the police report. It was a nightmare. We still can't believe it.

From the first time I heard these stories, I never thought Hertz would've fixed the situation except by sending a sorry note and a "we don't have any records" response. Sadly, while they "look" into the matter, more people's lives will be ruined. Instead of creating a database specifically for cars that were reported stolen and returned, so police can get a prompt response and that's just one idea.
This happened to me when I rented from Budget a few years ago. Was put in handcuffs for 30-45 minutes and had a gun pointed at me by a law enforcement officer
Contact the other people on here and get a classaction lawsuit going.
I believe Budget is also owned by hertz.

Outlandish; and if Hertz truly "took these matters seriously," this practice would have never gone on for so long. Unprofessional company with no customer service practices.
Now I'm worried, hertz took 2 payments out in the same day on the Uber rental program, 580 dollars the weekly rental was 290. So I kept the car an extra week, they kept calling wanting the car back and I said give the money back and u get the car otherwise I'm keeping it the week I'm owed. I returned it after hours and sent photos of it sitting at the lot and I'm sure it's on cameras. Next day they kept saying the car wasn't there, then she said oh whoops we were looking at fbd the wrong store, then they wanted me to go back and drive it to a store I was never at
25 miles from home. I returned it where I rented it from...I knew some shady crap was going on
I always said this was a case of fraud. Either underperformed dealerships making false claims or there's a legal loophole where reporting cars allows for monies from insurance. Either way this is nuts.
The insurance fraud division should investigate this issue, internal investigation for fraud, including the police department and the dealership if they are receiving kickbacks.
There is so many other stories of this where black customers faced the same situation, provided proof of extensions and STILL faced days in jail. Shame on Hertz and shame on police dept all over the country who failed to train their officers on this matter.

This has been an ongoing thing for the last couple of years! Stop renting from Hertz, simple solution. Hit them in the pocket.
This is what cancel culture should be done for. We see so many cancel cultures for ridiculous things but this is actually affecting people's lives for sure. It's unbelievable and totally irresponsible. Hopefully the proper lawsuits happen and they have to pay hefty payouts.

@@desmondjefferson2127 people just keep forgetting cops are just regular average people...they take a 22 week course and then they give them a gun..I have two friends of mine who are cops and is just scary how dumb they are when it comes to the law..two weeks ago I had a discussion with one them about the legalities of citizen using phones to record cops...he explains the dangers of it...so he justifies in his head basically criminality against any citizens who records him...

I think local police departments have some shared blame in this game. Both Hertz and cops are in a big hurry to put the hurt on people. The both treat this like a number's game and human beings are just collateral damage.
When in doubt when you rent a car call the police department and see if the car is stolen before you even accept the keys. After this episode I won't trust places anywhere.
Hertz is no longer allowed to rent vehicles to any of our employees for company travel. It's an internal policy. First time in history a corporation has had to ban a car rental company.

I'm from CT and when Blumenthal was Attorney General he didn't play about that consumer abuse. I hope they get every dime for their inconvenience and humiliation. The police are good at passing the buck if it was still in their database.

Happened to me twice, never rented from them again afterwards. I’m now on the class action lawsuit with receipts. Wish us luck!

The issue is also when police can't put two and two together, even after seeing a rental agreement and doing a basic background check of the person. Somethings got to add up...

This is unsettling, my insurance company uses Hertz when vehicles are in for repairs. I wonder if there’s a way to check off you could possibly be impacted, this seems to come out of no where.

As Doug said, use a different insurance company. Otherwise, you can sue them if anything like this happens to you because by now, everyone has been made aware of the scumminess of Hertz and if your company continues using them, they're held liable for any mishaps that may arise.

I've had issues with Enterprise... these rental car companies are like highway bandits! And they do not maintain the vehicles like they used to
Enterprise is the hidden big problem in auto rental industry. They hire recent college graduates as their business model, mostly college athletes, which are often super aggressive and lack basic common sense and good communication skills. I was given a car with pre-existing damages, and when I tried to take pictures of damages for my records, the staff blocked me. I later learned I was overcharged and when I raised the issue, they got nasty with me. Location manager, also from the college hiring practice, was equally problematic.
It’s not necessary the stolen car claim part it’s the part where you are arrested and in handcuffs, I don’t know why they can just say the the offer alright here is the paper work and the thing that says I’m renting this car, it’s not right to just go up and arrest them

They are in bankruptcy court right now . I’m sure this issue is one of the reasons why.
I suppose if you must rent from Hertz, immediately go to the nearest police station in your rental, with your Hertz receipts/documents, and ask the police if its stolen. If it turns up stolen, you at least have your paperwork proving you rented the car from Hertz.
IMO, Whomever at Hertz rented out a stolen car to you should be the one getting arrested, not the customer.

This is due to the incompetence of the police… the lack of due diligences on the part of the police and the court system. The attitude of the cops is outrageous and that cop threatening the man needs to be fired. All cops involved across the country need to be fired.
when you file a police report, you must update the status of the police report so that the police know the case is closed
Public Official #1: "I was inconvenienced by a misunderstanding."
Public Official #2: "I was also inconvenienced by the first guy's inconvenience."
Congress: "This Must Stop Now! Pay these poor people for the inconvenience this misunderstanding cost them!"
This has been going on for years.. Instead of Hertz fixing the problem so it doesn't happen to anyone else and compensating and apologizing they are working to protect their assets and avoid the payments they will be shelling out with the class action lawsuit. The CEO and former CEO should have some criminal charges over their heads.
I travel weekly for work and stopped renting from Hertz due to these stories I will never rent from them again

I rented a car from Hertz a few years ago as a result of a car accident, it was paid for by the insurance company. When I returned the car, I asked for a receipt showing the car was returned but the staff, new at the job, didn't know how to generate a proper receipt for an insurance contract rental. I pushed for a receipt because it would be my only mean of proof should something happen to the car, but the staff got frustrated and called the police on me... for asking for a receipt!

Hertz isn't the only rental agency guilty of this.
Hertz and Budget. Do NOT use either. Both are as sketchy as a trench-coat watch salesman. They love to find "damage" after you drop off the keys. Of course, they don't point this out on-site. They simply add it to the bill a couple days later.

Here's the thing our police departments across the country getting an incentive to go pick these cars up because it seems like they're finding an awful lot of them they can't find cars from people private citizens whose cars are stolen but they can find cars from Hertz

I don't even rent from hertz and have known about this for years already. This keeps happening because people don't believe it can happen to them so they continue to deal with the company. Ain't nobody stealing that many cars.

okay, thanks for the story. that's some mighty big eff up. can't imagine the trauma hertz has put people through. who updates the stolen car database? did hertz just forget to report recovery of stolen vehicles? is this just a bridge too far for the cops and/or for hertz?
Again, where is the customers rental contract? That should clearly show there is a mistake. Even if the officer doesn't accept that, what about the judge during the arraignment?
Now congress decided 💙to do something about the unprofessional practices in illegal car 🚗 renting.
There are quite a few Hertz employees who need to serve years in jail for these "mix ups". The only way companies will take accountability to make sure these kinds of things don't continue to happen is if someone goes to jail for not doing their job correctly.

I used to work for Hertz many years ago- I had been there for 2 years but ended up quitting because my boss threw a stapler at me from across his office. H.R. protected him & that was all I needed to know about what a disgusting company they were.

As this news gets around it gonna cause some or many to stop renting a car and so they just gonna loose funds cause they dont keep track of what is in stock and what isnt for any reason. then accuse u of stealing car when u know u just recently rented for any time.
