I personally felt that the final reveal that Parthi is Leo could have been a little less talk and more visual. Like all he had to do is roll the gun on his arm and a shock look on Harold's face would have been far better and effective than Parthi just blurting out that he is Leo.

Parthi's daughter is a little girl - so she wants to give the disney princess Elsa name
Parthi's son is a teenage boy - so he wants to give the Ghost name from Game of Thrones or Call of Duty
Both names are influenced by the age of the children
but Lokesh probably selected those names in particular to tease the LCU fans because Ghost = Adaikalam(in kaithi) and Vikram , Elsa = sounds similar to Leo's twin Elisa

For me Leo was a story about a man growing up in an abusive family/pack and adapting violence as a lifestyle to survive. Like the hyena, which bites and attacks first because that is the pack and environment it grew up in. They, man and animal, are both seeking safety and calm. If taken away from the environment, he and the hyena becomes a family man/pet. When threatened, the old violent survival methods come back.

During the climax, when Leo gives the conclusion about himself , both Mansoor and the other guy whom Trisha visits are shown, this means both of them know the actual truth about Parthiban's identity.

    @gouthamkrishna7574 10 месяцев назад +373

Leo is not a story on a hero vs villains, like Vikram and Kaithi. It's a story on a few smaller villains trying to prey on a bigger monster. We can't call Parthi a hero just because he is living undercover and fights off some other villain gang. He was a drug lord, he was and still is a mass murderer who kills for self interest. So the main villain in the movie is Parthiban/Leo himself. Anbu needed to take drugs before killing even one or two people. Sandhanam needed drug to kill people. Even Rolex needed drug to kill people. But Leo is himself a monster and he doesn't need any drug to casually massacre people without guilt...he is a very dangerous character in LCU. Because he himself says in the climax that he will do whatever he can to suppress his identity. Now Vikram knows his identity. So he should deal with Parthiban the right way, or else Parthiban will have no remorse in going against Vikram. Because Parthi is not fighting for a higher cause or drug free society, he is fighting for his own reasons...

I think Loki wanted this movie to show the lengths a deadliest villain will go to protect his family from breaking down due to his past which he has safeguarded for 20 years. Maybe this repressed rage is the reason why the present fight scenes were more Gory than the flashback one. Who is a bigger villain , A guy who does bad things because of superstition or A guy who does bad things because he can. Antony Das thought about making a deal with the police for Seized Datura but Leo just went in killed him and got the drugs back. So Leo was always the most dangerous of them all.

  • @rahularjun-v8z
    @rahularjun-v8z 10 месяцев назад +96

what intrigued me was Lokesh's attention to detail . Parthiban removed his shirt in 3 different sequences throughout the film . In vikram , when Das went to meet Rolex he had stitches in his neck which was due to the incident in kaithi . Even when Parthi faked the scratch in his back to get protection from the court , the marks from the incident with the hyena were there , but despite all this there were no bullet marks on parthi's body . The flashback maybe wasnt entirely true .
Another instance is Lokesh's symbolization where Parthi had Devil crown beside him and Antony had angel wings , i dont think these were coincidences , i think a sequel with leo's past is definetely on the cards

Another detail here is during flashback we can see a star shape in sanjay dutt's room depicting his rituals.

    SPOILERS :
Main issue for me is the how the characters of Antony / Harold were written. The whole second half they keep running behind Parthi asking him to accept if he is leo (while they almost know for sure its leo). Antony himself says something like "If he is parthi only 4 ppl is enough to kill him.... if its leo even the entire town cannot defeat him"...... When Antony / Harold clearly know its leo what are they trying to achieve by making him admit the whole time ? Knowing Harold killed leo's sister and leo may always look for revenge, wouldnt they jus kill him at the first sight instead of taking a chance with him ? Didnt make sense whatsoever.....
Another prblm is when Elsa dies in front of Leo, you could see the revenge in his eyes and boiling in anger.... yet he settled down in kashmir peacefully with his family knowing his sister's killers are still out there. The writers didnt make it clear what was the reason leo didnt go for revenge soon after. The connection between him & his twin sister were not properly fleshed out in the flashback..... hence the transition from leo to parthi was not properly justified !!
Having said all that, i didnt feel movie required this much trolling / negative feedback. Its just that Loki set a very high standard for himself..... i thoroughly enjoyed overall inspite of the negatives in second half. Vijay's best performance in recent years....
As you pointed out the doppleganger theory didnt make any sense at all..... do watch Mr'Sudhir Srinivasan's take on how parthi deepdown hates his alter ego leo. Think thats what Loki might have gone for. Even one of initial naa ready poster they clearly mentioned "Alter Ego".... so dont know why so much speculations !!

I really don't understand the people who say the car chase scene has bad CGI. The purpose of that scene is to be stylistic (and not realistic) and remain a single shot the entire sequence like the one in Extraction. Doing that in practical effects would have cost a lot and they made whatever they aimed pretty well. The movie has so many flaws and yet when the criticisms come in, it is for the one sequence which deserves some credit; that kinda bugs me. He will Kill anyone to hold his life that he created .In the coffee shop when Anthony first saw Parthi there is a Angel wing in Anthony's background. maybe that is a Symbolic representation that Anthony is not the Bad man. But Parthi don't like anyone remembering his past life.He is scaring that he will loose his present life. So he is killing everyone that digging his past. After the climax fight scene Leo is saying that " If anyone Coming and claiming that I"m Leo i will try to convince that i"m not, But then also they continue the digging They will die or they already dead. So he ruthlessly Killing every person who is claiming parthi is Leo.
There is a person who is Claiming to parthipan that you are my friend. That character also died. In movie scene it showing like Anthony Killed him. But maybe parthi only Killed him. because he don't want to intercept anyone in his present life. he got scared that Someone will notice the person ask him about his past. So maybe Parthi only killed him.
So in the film whoever claiming that parthipan is Leo they all dead.
At last Vikram calling him and Calling him Leo and he didn't liked that. Maybe that is a Start of Leo vs Vikram war. Because Parthipan don't want anyone to dig his past and he hate he Name "Leo". So i think there will be clash between Vikram and Leo.
And whoever telling the Villains are not powerful. In this story Leo is the Villain. The most powerful one. Anthony only telling that he so brutal and the most powerful. So there is No stronger villain than Leo here.

What if Parthiban is Parthiban, he did told he is Leo of frustration to das brothers because they were not understanding him as Parthiban. Even if you look at the last shot where Vikram called him Leo and his closed eyes as " 0h not again".
Now what if Lokesh is playing with the audience and the real comeback will be in Vikram 2. Where Parthiban is on Vikram side and Vikram says he has to face his real demon....and boom Leo comes with Rolex.
Parthiban vs Leo, theatres will be blown away by this single twist.
(For people thinking if Leo is alive why didn't he avenge his sister, maybe something happened in the factory where he lost his memory or in coma, the guy in the jail didn't tell reality and hiding him to save him..who knows it can be)

I think Loki should had made Leo 2 explaining the details of the flashback, or he should described the flashback like the way Amar described Vikram's flashback. Only thing I understood from the flashback that Leo felt like that he had no relationship with the Das family once his soul twin sister Elsa (played by Madonna Sebastian) was stabbed to death by his uncle and his father was in favor of that. So he started believing himself that he wasn't Leo Das anymore and Leo Das was dead, and he reveals it out that he did many wrongs when he was Leo and the only way he could undo by doing good deeds like taking care of the family etc. Had the director atleast showed the chemistry between Leo and his sister, then the flashback story should had been even more impacting. Also I felt like Lokesh had hurried in the 2nd half due to lack of time, he should had atleast delayed the release even further , edited or re-took some scenes in the 2nd half.
One mistake we did as an audience and/or the fans of Lokesh Kanagaraj is that we had way too many expectations on him after watching Vikram. We should had slightly barred down our expectations. Before going to the theater, I saw your review on the movie then barred down my expectations and saw the movie. I felt like the movie was good but not as impacting as Vikram. Lesson learnt: every new movie needs to be watched with zero expectations, no matter who the director and the casting crew are....🙏🙏🙏

Perhaps a slightly longer runtime would have greatly benifitted the film. The villans just needed a better build up and some scenes to show their terrifying nature.
Maybe Lokesh could have included some scenes of the human sacrifices done by Antony. Perhaps he could have given some ulterior motive to Harold that links him to the greater narrative of the LCU.
Just 10-15 more minutes of focus on the Das brothers would have made their characters better.

A few things that I would like to note here:
I watched it a second time with a friend who had not seen it.
    - The first half was truly brilliant in terms of direction and the way Vijay portrayed the character as well as the realism in the action sequences.
    - The second half was def lacking in terms of character development for Antony and Harold and as a viewer I was very emotionally detached vs the character development given to Sandy’s character. But that said Jawan was just as bad in terms of having a compelling narrative. It was multiple Tamil movies with mass messages put together at best. The action sequences were the only thing about Jawan that was worth watching in the theater embellished by Anirudh’s score. Even Jawan had extremely bad cuts for Zinda Banda.
    - I first watched the version where Leo is revealed only after picking up the gun against Harold at the end, the entire BGM after the back story did not have the “Leo is a Badass” lyric to not give away that he’s Leo but considering that they used the same track meant he was going to be revealed as Leo. Until the end I thought it was very unlikely that he was pretending, the only two possibilities in my head were memory loss or double acting. It never occurred to me that he could be acting, especially after they added doubt with D’Souza saying he’s not Leo similar to how Antony claimed he was lfeom his eyes.
    - The attitude with which Vijay sits on the “throne“ in the end explaining that he had to believe that Leo was dead was so magical to watch, the ease with which he pulled off that dichotomy, and the way the words are stylized in his Tamil when he is behaving as Leo is pure masss.
    - Napoleon’s introduction was truly the most mass scene in this movie and it was a very unforced link to LCU. The girl from Vikram is also present in the end with Vikram in the second version that I watched.

I totally agree that a song that has become my favourite of the film is Ordinary Person and the insane
long take that it is accompanied with ,through the cafe shop, Parthi going from the one who stopped the hyena to an ordinary cafe owner.
The fight scenes are all fantastically captured and Lokesh's style is displayed in every frame and every camera angle choice.
I totally agree that the 2nd half is nowhere near as good as the first half, especially with that fantastic interval scene, and that the Das Duo of villains just were not intimidating to me and their plan was not well written.

Antony does not seem to want to kill Leo and I think he wants Leo to go back to him so that he can get back to top in his business. This is why he doesn't hurt Trisha or Chintu. If Leo loses his family he only has Antony to fall back on. Harold in the climax wants Leo to feel the loss that he felt with his brother before killing him, ie why he asks him to admit he is Leo to his family. But flashback didn't need to be shown if Manzoor was an unreliable narrator. Sanjay and Arjun chopping off some hands and heads would have made them more fearsome. But I suspect it was censored.

Parthi is suffering from PTSD for his past actions as Leo. He hates being Leo, a situation he was born into. Post the factory fire, he wanted to escape from his current reality. Parthi is the world that he has built for himself, and he wants to hold onto it dearly. He is madly in love with Satya, and wants to parent his kids Madi and Siddu. This is world he has created and he believes this is his reality. He will protect this reality at any cost. Loki s reference for Villain Yaruda, Nanban Yaruda shows the conflict is internal. This movie is all about Parthi vs Leo, he certainly makes us believe that Parthi is the real villain here. The back story is intentionally poor, to establish that Antony and Harold are dumb gangsters and not that evil that we expected them to be. Infact when Antony and Harold get to know that Leo is alive, their first reaction is to get Leo back into their fold and resurrect their failing drug empire. This movie is all about Leo/Parthi' s world and the song Naan Ready captures it is as an Alter Ego.

The song 'villain yaaru' and its placement in the movie was kind of depicting that. His care for the family, asking the son to get back home and when he refuses tries to slap him and instead showing his anger on the two random guys and that scary look he gives to his son and the lyrics of the song asking 'Only one question, who is the villain? who is the friend?' kind of shows that. The fact that Antony Das never wanted to kill Leo was clearly evident in the film. During the scene where Leo's friend was hanged in front of his cafe, they showed a small clip that Antony did that, that might be a misdirection. I think it was done by Parthiban/Leo himself cause somewhere in the movie he says that he will eliminate anyone who comes in search for Leo even if its his friend.
But still I am really frustrated about the second half of the movie just because it had so much more potential. The flashback scene was not so effective. Leo Das was supposed to be 'badass'. But I never felt so. The first fight of Leo with the police officers was not strong enough to establish the badass character. The relation between Leo and his sister, her death were not emotionally connected to me. And the car chase. Although I appreciate Loki for trying such a grand scene, something we mostly see in Hollywood films, I hoped that he would have mixed that scene with some practical effects. I also hope that there will be an alternate flashback. I don't think that the entire flashback scene was a scam. Maybe a 10% of it was not true, maybe the sister was killed because of Leo's actions itself which might have caused a mental breakdown for his character which forced him to change from Leo to Parthiban. And these are all just speculations.
But overall I really enjoyed movie as a whole but frustrated for the second half because it had so much potential.

Absolutely resonate with your statement that Sandy master character was far more menacing - on a whole loved the movie (probably because I was prepped with the initial reviews and analysis); I felt Vijay and Madonna were probably against the drug business. I hope to see more of that part and the Das brothers duo in future. Also, I did not feel the call from Vikram is forced fit - we need to wait and see how Lokesh would take it forward.

I do believe that Leo and Vikram has a past, because Leo was just a criminal and reinventing himself as Parthi would take expertise (Like how Vikram became Karnan). Also when Vikram called Leo, he wasn't surprised, so I guess though Das Orgin story was a sucker, there's more to that orgin story post the factory fire

I think in the second half leo das introduction fight sets on forest there is double role. I noticed on my 2nd watch of the film. There is moment where vijay looking for the lorry and immediately the lorry starts driven by vijay in the particular scene. And there is no bullet marks for vijay in the whole film, if leo and parthi were same. And i truely beleive that lokesh will give depth of theses das brothers in upcoming movies. Its just an intrioduction of leo in lokesh universe. The das brothers will more in rolex stand alone movie .

Man has really put in some reaal hard work and IT SHOWS. This is the best example for people to realize how movies or actors can become if it is the Director's movie and not the actor's movie. And regarding the death of the das brothers and anurag's character and even Elisa, I feel like this movie is just an introduction to those characters and maybe there might be some kind of a prequel to this in Lokesh's future movies...MAYBE. Just like Kaithi.

    My opinion,
    1. Half should be made into one film
    * Serial killer part, Hyena, more character establishment needed for Leo, more scenario and those scenarios should be made into visuals,He is preparing his son how to be prepared for unforeseen events in life and how to find the imminent solutions,
Sanjay Dutt’s introduction, and vehicle showdown should be the climax. And the movie should be made with the same budget allocated, one or two VFX flaws were there, ( eg: the killing of doctor, final vehicle showdown, the pet eagle head movement, and the tail end should be G V M meeting the his exgang member ( Mansoor Ali Khan ) at jail. Where he narrates the introduction of LEO. That’s it. Just the look of Madonna and Vijay was enough. That will be the highest note.
Second part movie should give more time to give character establishment of Das brothers, how their cartel operates, who was the former aides and they can connect LCU there. Not in the first part. Then this movie would have worked wonder. This is my idea about this movie. The movie was too much packed for such a short time. Too many characters went under cooked and they had only 1 year time to produce a movie. All this came because of he committed 4 LCU movies may be. Yet those action choreography was the best. I have seen many people saying second half is the best. There are much mass masala movie lovers who prefer over the top action sequences. some time we have to compromise to please all parts of demographics due to pressure from producers.

The movie was one of the most intelligent movies made by Lokesh. There are so many hidden details and Leo is more like a charactery study which has many unanswered questions like how Fahadh & Vijay are related, is Rolex son of Harold, what is the flashback of Leo etc. This movie was more like a base set for Vijay's character in LCU. I would give this to Lokesh and not criticize the movie as we need to understand his vision and how he will collate all of this in his universe. The Orphanage link would be definitely a key link to establish links between Trisha, Fahadh, Vijay & Karthi.

Great video - couple of thoughts:
    1. The backstory cannot be a hoax - there are too many people who corroborate it at multiple points, none of whom need to.
    2. I think Vikram may have saved Leo and help establish his fake history as Parthi. Vikram was a spy, so definitely something he would be able to. The why may come later. Pretty sure Leo knows Vikram because there is a line something like “You know whose voice this is” during the call.
    3. I think Parthi doesn’t mean to “gaslight” Sathya (though he really does). In the end, Leo says something to the effect of “I want to believe that person is dead” - so for Parthi, he has already ‘killed’ his alter ego and has nothing to do with Leo.
    4. The second half had serious pacing and editing choice issues. Agree the back story should’ve got more time to breathe.
    5. And to be honest, the whole occult stuff was a bit ridiculous, and the only way to make it believable was to spend more time on it. Would’ve been better if the plot was something like Leo was not a son and was just devoted to the Dad brothers, but becomes too powerful that they decide to kill him. The pack abandoning ideology would’ve panned out.
    6. Was so fun to hear the moaning bgm from Vikram when the escort is at the cafe. Got a hoot outta me.
    5. The friend’s death outside the cafe was pointless, because there was no time given to that character.
Agree on everything else, but still a good watch for me.

Just watched this in theatre and was one of my best theatre going experience. I was in awe of all the action set pieces, and contrary to everyone i loveeeeddd the car chase. I love how it is cut like a video game cutscene fight where you press the buttons to push the action, it literally gave me goosebumps. I think it is clear that Loki just want to direct a full-blown, no nonsense, high octane action movie. Like most great action films (Raid 1, John wick, Rumble in the bronx, Armour of God) this movie had a wafer thin plot, yet was filled with nuances. Parthi's inner turmoil is caught great by vijay. But what I wanted to notice was the shift between Parthi and Leo during violence. In HOV, Viggo portrayed this with gloriously subtlety, shifting between two characters on a whim-- cold blooded killer who loves killing and a "peace loving soul" protecting his family. When Parthiban accepts with all his glory that he is indeed Leo the illusion breaks for me. Even the half-baked backstory didn't bother me, because this is about a man running away from his past. I never felt the fear of approaching mobsters in HOV... It is all about Tom stall, it is about his conflict with the inner Joey. Want to watch leo one more time to observe this split-personality like shift in parthiban. However I thoroughly enjoyed it and so glad that a "Vijay" movie could entise such vast theories about acting and inner turmoil.

Leo is a good character study.. Parthiban has moved on from his past and living peacefully but he knows that his ability to be violent is still in him.. he satisfies that urge through small time animal rescue .. but in the coffee shop scene his violent side gets revealed.. it's a mass movie moment but it's treated in a different way.. from that moment on he is scared.. not because he is being hunted or his family could be in danger.. because Leo that he buried in himself could come out.. all he has achieved in that last 20 years will be lost. Every villain characters are just triggers.. they are just triggers to push Parthiban to reveal himself as leo

My Theory - Just like in Vikram, he leaves clues behind so that someone will come after him ( Agent Amar / Fahadh Faasil ) He is given false flashbacks to make them believe Vikram is an alcoholic person. Later we realised it was a fake.
Same in Leo, ( Irudhayaraj D'souza / Mansoor Ali Khan ) tells the flashback to ( Joshy Andrews / Gautham Vasudev Menon ) This scene is right after Leo sees that girl Escort from Vikram. He must have suspected that Vikram was after him. So he leaves a fake flashback through Irudhayaraj D'souza. Joshy Andrews believes he is Parthiban whereas Vikram believes he is Leo. Or he made up the flashback to get closer to Vikram (since his character has 2 faces) working with Rolex on the other hand. Who knows there might be another reason why the tobacco factory was closed. Because it does sound weird to hear that Leo who smuggled did the dirty work for them to run the business smoothly and suddenly turned against them for revenge. Maybe we might get a clear picture in Lokesh's next LCU movie - Rolex
    Point Agreed.
    1. Missed opportunities to score in the flashback
    2. The Na Ready song should have gone uninterrupted.
    3. The cult practices did not work for the movie. It should have been better.
    4. Elisa should have had more screen time to connect emotionally with her.
    5. One vs All looks more unrealistic after what we witnessed in the first half. Should have handled it in a Lokesh way
Vikram ( Using Warmachine and Cannon to fight all )
or like Kaithi ( Using Minigun to fight )
All the negatives came from the second half. My only five negatives.

The first half in particular was simply terrific with a solid interval point. The second half especially the back-story featuring Dutt & Arjun Sarja was weak indeed but thankfully the film picked up steam in the last 20-30 mins. Sanju Baba is getting typecast in such roles (KGF2, Shamshera, Leo) - hamming away to glory. High time he does something different or gracefully retires.

It is not necessary to fully explain the intentions, backstory and complete character arc of every character for a movie that is a part of a cinematic universe in one film itself. It might make sense as other films come out and we get to know more about them. Das duo and their arc may get explored in upcoming films. This was just a character intro and his nature in my opinion. Leo is like the Hulk the Bruce Banner Parthiban hates. He is kind of like an anti hero and a villain as the song Villain Yaruda clearly indicates this. In the second watch I could sense the evil in him right from the beginning. Das duo wanted something that Leo could give. Why Parthi hates Leo might get answered as LCU expands. Come on, we hated Age Of Ultron when it released. Now we love it after Infinity war and Engame as it clearly contributed to complete Tony's character arc. I loved Leo much more after second watch❤

Parthi should've never accepted that he is Leo. Rather Lokesh should've left some signs like
    1. Parthi rolls a revolver on his arm and kills Harold in Leo's cool style.
    2. Parthi looks into the eye of the flying eagle.
    3. Parthi grabs the knife that was used to kill his twin sister Elisa followed by blowing up the factory scene.
    4. In the end, he receives a call from Vikram saying that "Leo can fool everyone but not him, he knows that Parthi is in fact Leo."
Lokesh should've left the Parthi-Leo identity open-ended rather than concluding it.

So a few points I noticed on my second viewing -
    SPOILER ALERT (obviously)
    1) While the flashback might not entirely be fake, I feel D'Souza did lie about a few aspects. The kadi Leo wears on his hand before "dying" is found at Das & Co after the climax fight (he wears it again then) - not sure how it got there if he "died" according to D'Souza. Also when Joshy visits D'Souza in jail, one of the policemen mentions that there will be a headcount soon and that Joshy only has about 20 min to talk to D'Souza, which kind of explains why D'Souza talks mostly (and briefly) only about the day the factory got burned. After his conversation with Joshy, D'Souza even says this - "He reacted like this after I narrated what happened in one day, I wonder how he'll react if he listens to the entire story". This kind of explains the rushed "flashback" as I'm guessing Loki has kept it under wraps to explore in future LCU movies. Also, the absence of bullet wounds after getting shot at (twice I think) that everyone is pointing out. Loki is very consistent with such details and I refuse to believe that he missed something so obvious. And he showed Leo shirtless for like 3 times in the movie - which I believe is to establish that the part about him dying after getting shot by Anthony is not true.
    2) I feel there might've been some rivalry between Das & Co and Rolex as it is hinted in one of the lyrics from Naa Ready - "Don't taunt this lion (Leo) with a scorpion bite (Rolex). Also, one of his henchmen says that they're getting shot at by "them" whenever they try to transport stuff. "Them" here might either be the police or Rolex's peeps - I'm inclined to believe the latter.
    3) In the climax fight, before killing Harold, Leo says "I should've killed you that day itself, not sure why I didn't. No matter, I'll do it now" hinting that he had a chance to kill him "that" day, but he still let him go for some reason - which also kind of establishes that D'Souza was not entirely truthful when he spoke to Joshy.
Maybe I'm reading a little too much into stuff, lol. But I really enjoyed it a bit more (especially the second half - which I felt was kind of a letdown on my first viewing) on my second viewing.

    2. Anthony learns about leo when he dies but is only reveled when harold is being killed
    3. Anthony learns about leo in his final moments and this is shown to the audience and also same thing with harold.
