Jigarthanda XX - Movie Review (Long Read)
80s kid (Born 1983) Karthik Subbaraj is a little over a decade old in the industry. JTXX is his 8th full length feature film. A self proclaimed Superstar fan, had a smashing debut with Pizza in 2012 followed by Jigarthanda in 2014 which won two National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor for Bobby Simha and Best Editing for Vivek Harshan. The movie itself was an inspiration of the 2006 Korean film A Dirty Carnival. It was remade in Kannada with the same title (2016), in Telugu as Gaddalakonda Ganesh (2019), and in Hindi as Bachchhan Paandey (2022).
Given this success, making a movie on similar cards after nearly a decade and calling it Jigarthanda XX set the expectations pretty high. Karthik Subbaraj post JTXX has worked with SJ Surya, VJS, Prabhu Deva, Superstar, Dhanush, Vikram. He has had a mixed run till date, both his last two films in Mahaan and Jagame Thandiram were well made films but didnt get the credits it should have got.
If you hated JTXX, RIP .. you probably didn’t understand and will never understand the art of cinema, you are entitled to it. A course in Cinema 101 will help you to appreciate movies better and not blindly spit at every other movie you watch.
JTXX is a remarkable movie and one of the best made movies in Tamil Cinema. Fresh from Chandramukhi 2, I was appalled at the movie and at Lawrence for imitating the superstar at a cringe level which was hard to fathom. If there was a Cannes Cringe Film Festival, Chandramukhi 2 would have won an award. KB who had introduced him in Paarthale Paravasam made a statement that he was the next Rajnikanth which was laughable at that time. A sensational dancer/choreographer who gave good performances in Muni and Kanchana series, the rest were Rajini imitations and cringe worthy, Chandramukhi 2 was the worst. I assumed that his Rajinikanth imitation skills was the only reason why Karthik chose him for this movie and boy was I totally wrong.
Lawrence came on his own and deserves multiple awards for his performance on a once in a lifetime role. Totally impressed and maybe this is what KB saw in him 22 years ago. Lawrence sizzled in every frame and stood out tall with Nadippu Arakkan in many frames. The interval scene was epic, hats off to Karthik Subbaraj for this, had goosebumps. The forced songs for commercial reasons were lit with Lawrence incredible moves, imagine if Rajini had his moves what would have happened, this was the closest thing to that. Lawrence, he came, he saw, he performed and he conquered our hearts. Remarkable acting.
Nadippu Arakkan aka SJS was etched out a supporting role character and he did what the director asked him to do. Nadippu Arakkan is an apt screen name for him, I am amazed at his versatility, fresh out of Marc Antony where he slayed it, this was a different dimension, what an actor.
For several years, I have been trying to find this factory which generates beautiful and extremely skilled actresses, all I know is that it is located in Kerala and probably exists in a place like Harry Potter 9 3/4 platform.
Not sure if it is the coconuts but the skill and beauty Kerala consistently produces is incredible. Nimisha Sajayan was spell binding, The Great Indian Kitchen star has slaughtered the challenge given to her, what an actress.
Karnataka born Naveen Chandra who has predominantly worked in Telugu films stood out as the main antagonist. He was menacing and what a talent and what a casting. He was clinical in every frame and lived his character.
Both the heroes depicted for the ruling and opposition parties were superbly casted. Please give the national award for casting right away. Shine Tom Chacko who was a terrorist in Beast played his part well. The Krishnadasi (Music Director Immam first stint) TV actor Aravind Akash was the other screen hero and he too executed his cameo role well.
Seasoned actor Ilavarasu played a strong role despite a small screen time. Sathyaraj’s nephew is seen after a long time and he performed his part cringeless which he is typically accustomed to. Debutant Vedhani as Shettani was spectacular, who the hell is he. See it to believe it. Kudos to Karthik to give him the entry and exit that the character required. Debutant Kapila Venu as the CM was a refreshing role, she nailed her very limited screen presence. We could see Bigg Boss 7 Bava in a very brief role as a director, all the supporting actors did a tremendous job and there were many who did this.
Santhosh Narayanan who is Karthik’s favourite and scored for all of his movies sans Petta. Sana rocks the show, only three tracks but he smashed the BGM, he took the elephant concept and played around with trumpet galore. Add Clint Eastwood to the mix, he scored like a Hollywood movie, unique tones and Wild Wild West tunes, Sana enjoyed it and it’s evident on the screen. Spaghetti Western tones are peppered throughout, not many would appreciate it mainly to their lack of understanding, this was and is genius stuff from Sana. If you don’t and didn’t get it, RIP.
Tirru camera work was truly world class, lighting alone was spectacular. The National Award winning camera man which he won the movie 24 is also a Karthik regular, he is working with Shankar for Game Changer which is his next work of art. The movie has multiple genre scope from Willd Wild West to tribal regions and a period movie set in 1975s, it was full meals for Tirru.
Clint Eastwood digital imaging work worked well and was impressive, the movie has odes to many of Karthik’s likings from Clint to Rajinikanth to first black Tamil hero to mocking Pan India as Pandya, Alias Caesar, Oscar, to Satyajit Ray, calling Shooting as soodudhal and many more. The depth and intensity of Karthik’s love to cinema stood out. The message was clear, what we have is a stalwart who given the right opportunity will take Tamil cinema to a different league.
While VFX looked VFX, it worked well, the elephant portions were shot well, Sana BGM elevated the sequences. The movie being 172 minutes long wasn’t boring, it was over the top melodramatic at times but subtler than what you saw in RRR, the genre changes drastically between two halves which may be hard to fathom for those who don’t like change. Too many boundaries so the minor swing and misses were ignorable. Several deeper movements from the elephant thanking to SJS brilliance were the other highlights. Usual story but was brilliantly and beautifully executed, was a satisfying experience for me.
JTXX: Roll, Camera, Action and Action it was.

To all the cinephiles out there, I would recommend you to consider "chittha" as a companion piece to Anurag Kashyap's "Ugly" ...
For long Ugly has been one of those films although fantastic u cannot bring ur self to watch it again, because it's so dark, gut wrenching and leaves you with despair.
Chittha deals with similar premise and themes but this one fills you with hope and optimism. One of the finest films this year. More than anything I can watch ugly again and follow it up with chittha.

It played in my local theatres consistently 2 shows per day for like 2 weeks, which is amazing for a South Indian movie here. But all that aside, it became my favourite film of the year. Appreciate that you reviewed Hi Nanna, when many other pan-India reviewers still haven't.
However, Yashna does call up her father telling him to come quickly and that she loves Viraj. Its not a hilarious entry. In fact, its the most unexpected reveal of the film, not the interval block.
Jigarthanda double X has a novel concept and is worth a watch for sure. But far too many cliches and way too many silly things. For one, doesn't explain how the guy who faints at sight of blood goes so fearlessly in front of a gangster and stays with him for so long. IMO, no way in hell is it even close to Hi Nanna, let alone better.
