The movie is a piece of art. Being a bengali, I would say that the movie would probably make more sense to us than the rest. The historical accuracy is very close. For example, Shyam's childhood is based at kharagpur, and a large percentage of residents there are from Andhra pradesh and Telangana, so even the language shifts make sense. But I believe the dance sequence shot by the riverside was a truly transcending experience for me, as it portrayed Rosie's intense desire to be free of slavery.

Hi, I'm a Telugu person myself, just want to know why Telugu people percentage of the population is more in Kharagpur region is it due to IIT Kharagpur because most of the people in Telugu states prefer engineering and percentage of them entering into IIT's are more due to different reasons are as a faculty they settle there or there are other reasons? I'm just curious and also Telugu people had an obsession with west Bengal mainly your capital Kolkata though it was started by Chiranjeevi movie choodalani vundhi continued. All the people who come from his family has done a movie around Kolkata as a background and other actors also continued that. There is a song in choodalani vundi about Kolkata which describes the people of Kolkata and the city itself. I just want to share it.

Many revolutionaries like Muthulakshmi Reddy (MLC in Madras) and etc.. Tried to get rid of this. Hence the assembly of Madras passed the bill to abolish Devdasi system during 1930s. But it was established as an act during 1947 after lot of struggle. Don't just put everything on Mugals and others blindly. Read the history of us too.

Loved the review. While Sai Pallavi gets a lot of credit for her dancing skills, she is truly underrated as an actress. Her performances in Fidaa,Athiran & Paava Kathaigal is a sample of her acting range. Even in this movie, not sure how many actresses wd have agreed to 'look' the way she did in climax. Also not easy to find equal mention alongside heroes in a mainstream Telugu movie. Thanks to Alphonse Puthran for finding this rare talent.

The movie just showed them. There’s nothing wrong in accepting the flaws of our culture. WE made the culture. People were discriminating others in the name of “culture”. That is absolutely wrong. This was a treat to watch, an emotional ride - people flocked for Nani's action but stayed for Pallavi ma'am's superb acting and dance... The only thing I felt they could have done better was to have kept Shyam Singha Roy's story as the whole movie: granted that the movie was promoted and branded as a reincarnation story, the period aspect and Bengali culture is why the audience were attracted to SSR. Vasu's part of the story in the first half of the film felt like just any other court and law based film. That said, I enjoyed the movie nonetheless and have recommended it to my friends. Language is no barrier these days and SSR is a way of proving that.

@@Arkaprava_ ya I know that 😂 and stereotyping your own culture is actually possible it happens a lot for example if you see some Indian American person playing an indian in an English film they do the absolute worst accents and stereotype the Indian parents, especially, as loud uncultured and intolerable example see what lily Singh does and also in a 90s film sridevi ,who's a tamilian herself, played a horribly stereotyped "madrasi" woman .... So ppl stereotyping their own culture and backgrounds happens way more than you think btw most Bollywood actors are Punjabis or are frm Punjabi descent and yet they play horrible caricatures of Punjabis 😂

Finally! Thank you for reviewing this,
I had sensed it from the tralier itself that this movie is something that needs to be experienced in the cinemas and boy was i right, being a sucker for old school romances i was just mesmerized,
i am glad that it is streaming on Netflix for all those who missed watching the magic in the theater.
I had goosebumps when watching Pranavalaya and what a trest to watch Sirivenalla ...
Coming to the film as a whole,
My mind and heart seem to be still with Rosie/Maitreyi and Shyam/Vasu on that beach...
It has been a really long when a movie especially a love story which has brought me to tears and has left me with a bittersweet ache in the heart...
i wanted to see more of Maitreyi, how she bloomed after moving to calcutta, her likes, her dislikes, how she opened up to shyam, how her childhood was and also her day to day life as a devdasi...Similarly wanted to know more about Shyam, his writings, although we saw a glimpse how Rosie had an influence on him, wanted to see what else she had inspired him to do and vise versa....
And the climax, Nani and Sai Pallavi absolutely nailed it, sharing crackling chemistry making their scenes together were absolute poetry.
Also with Sai Pallavi who had less than 60 mins of screen time she ended up becoming the heart and soul of the movie with her endearing performance. It could hv been just a damsel in distress kinda role but the depth that Sai Pallavi brought to Rosie was amazing, i dont think any other actress could've played Rosie as beautifully as she did.
She moves like a dream, is fierce as a tigress and an absolute goddess in Pranavalaya but soft and light as a feather in Sirivenalla and a butterfly when she danced on the riverfront... it felt not just Shyam's but our world too froze watching her dance.
All the supporting cast also acted well,
The beautifully written lyrics by sirivennala shashtry garu which was aptly picturized on Sai Pallavi, the music by Mickey J Meyer and brillant singing by Anurag lifted the movie to the perfect emotional wavelength.
Coming lastly to the director Rahul, he knew exactly the right dose that had to be given to the audience of Rosie and Shyam thus leading to a greatly emotional climax and leaving them wanting for more.
The negative aspects were rightly pointed out by you however the positives overpower them.
Nani was great a Shyam and pulled of Vasu easily as well...
P.s - Sai Pallavi is the best thing to have happended to the Indian Cinema in recent times and she is a force to reckon with, her performances keep bettering with each film and i am sure she will deliver her career best with Virata Parvam🔥✌

Caste system is something I still don’t understand. Touchable and untouchable! Where in this world also we do see some people taking pride in explaining how they treated others just because they come from certain caste or class.
I’m glad that, I come from a family attracted to culture so deeply yet putting aside such atrocious thoughts and practises aside.

I'm also seni-religious and telugu, I'll never understand how we were so diverse and united in culture yet we had the absolute ridiculous systems like caste system and the devdasi system. These were just fodder for British people to spread colonization, and turned our ancestors against each other. I couldn't be more happier that we've progressed from all this. Rosie says this line"we're married to gods, hence goddesses ourselves. No one owns us, not even God" Which isn't just some powerful slogan, but true, because that's exactly why this system started, to glorify, worship and respect women!
It became incredibly flawed and worsened under colonial rule beyond repair, hence this system had to be and should have been abolished
Edit: I'm well aware that the devdasi system was flawed well before the British came, I'm saying they made it even worse by associating them with prostitution, which was never true as if that was the case, people would have been dying in temples from STDs. The British made it a reality by contracting syphilis and forcing unprivileged devdasis to sleep with them and spreading syphilis in India

Just like a monk and they were part of holy rituals. But later on got exploited and suffered a lot. It's got worsen during British rule since they considered them as prostitute and compared temples with Brothel houses.
But study says that most of the Andhrapradesh devadaasies got converted to Christianity after independence started to lead good life. So happy for them. But there are still few families struggling, hope one day they lead a good life.

The political aspects and evil hindu references, get highlighted when shown in Bollywood than in southern movies.
It's because in Hindi, references get one sided so many times and do not showcase problems froms everywhere..
In contrast south movies have both problematic and glorified references which makes it is easier to accept when things are shown this way.

People don't have a problem with pointing out social evils and rotten eggs of the society, the issue is when the entire culture and its way of living are hammered with negative shades in a sequence of stories that come out. Even today in a South Movie, Marriages are shown in the way they happen, that is the real way. When was the last time we saw a proper Hindu Marriage ceremony from Bollywood that celebrates it rather than keeps pointing out how it is all regressive and wrong. It becomes unacceptable beyond a point.

They should have some respect for Hindu tradition and have highlighted real issues which are still really matter. This movie shows entire Hindu religion in bad light.
    1. Temples are shown as if they are only there for exploiting women including sexually.
    2. Hindu holy men portrayed as villains and they worship goddess and r@pe women during the navratri. In fact most of the Hindus follow brahmacharya especially during Navratri including house holders. These same directors doesn't dare to point out current atrocities by imams and fathers.
    3. Hindu families are shown as if they are against reforms and are ready to kill their family members for the same. In fact recent instances of Love j!ihad shows otherwise.
You may ask why bring religion in art/cinema. When the art becomes propaganda it has to be treated as such.

The only drawback I would say is the misrepresentation of Bengali Puja. They showed Navaratri but Bengali Hindus celebrate Durga puja. But I guess they just showed it so that Sai Pallavi could dance. The transformation of the hero to a Bengali character was so satisfying. I could hardly say they were the same person. Overall an interesting movie.

This movie would have been cult classic if that reincarnation part was chopped and the backstory was made into a complete movie... Missed opportunity.. But acting brilliance of nani, sai pallavi shines😍

I was not keen on watching this movie but Thankfully the lockdown was about to start again in Bangalore and I decided not to lose an opportunity to watch a movie in theatre as every movie was postponed, I am lucky to watch it in the theatre. I was in a thought that it will be another incarnation movie where it starts with some scenes and hero meets with an incident and he gets the flashes of his past and flashback and it was same as I thought but I was curious to see how Nani portrays the Bengali Language, body language and diction and my god the Natural star Nani given the proper script he never lets the character down and I only went to the movie to see how he speaks Bengali as a follower of Jammy I am also keen of diction like mentioned about Sherhshah Punjabi diction and other I though this shouldn't be same and while watching the scene of hypnosis, the moment Nani said Shyam Singha 'Roy' I realized how natural he is because the Roy he said was so Bengali that only Bengalis can say that R in 'Roy' so perfectly and from there the rest of the movie was a visual spectacle and Nani's & Sai pallavi's show
Thank you for reviewing this Jammy

Although the film has been great on its part of Acting, Cinematography and Music, I feel the storyline took a very cliché turn to portray all the Theists/Pandits as Pure Evils. I surely do not have a problem if the story demands that, but I feel in the process of doing so, they did not think of any alternatives, which ultimately makes it a staunch proponent of a current Political Side/Stand. But, the film, despite of having some purely Generic and aggravating dialogues, serves to become a good watch purely because of its Art Production, Cinematography and the Acting. Good Video Anmol! Cheers.

LOOK BUDDY,THATS WHAT THE STORY DEMANDS! THIS WAS DEFINETELY NOT A BIASED STORY , you gotta stop getting way to influenced by this Anmol guy and watch this movie yourself.
It was much rather attacking the evil practices that used to be practiced in india and other places, and unfortunately devadasi system still exists, I know in some parts of Telangana personally.
if you know of telugu movies you wuldnt have made this absolute baseless comment, a priest they will show with a teak only know? or what will they show with , a cross? It inly gets as real as possible and if you cant see that and want to shame it calling it "anti hindu" when most telugu movies, promote and show the beauty of our culture, its on you.

@@na-hg3ch WTF! This film has no historical accuracy. It was completly biased Just a propaganda against Hindus. How can they portray the temple as a brothel. Devadasi ritual was destroyed by mughals. Why the hell creators don't show that. Can you explain me? They just insulted Hindu temples and gods. How can even this film get released. And why the bloody character of Nani changes Sai Pallavi's character name to Rosie. Ans - Just to promote conversion. And everyone finding this film beautiful.

I watched this movie and it was so beautiful in so many scenes that I couldn't control my tears from my eyes. Even though I watched this from Netflix, the whole movie gave me a whole new different experience as an audience that helps them to be involved. I definitely think that this is a masterpiece that is underrated, full of emotions and raw energy that's worth checking out. ❤️

The problem with Bollywood making such movies are below -
    1. History of making it biased towards a community
    2. Track record of making it narrative based rather than story based
    3. Solutions provided are always to remove your past but in this one former deva dasi still practicing dance to be rooted in the culture
Hope you get this some day!!

Never thought NANI would make a anti-hindu and a propaganda movie by demonising hindu gods, culture and hailing communism which killed over 100 million @telugus you people know nothing about devdasi culture and named her with a xtian name rosy from maitriteye. We dare you to remake this in Hindi. I expected this anti hindu communism loving be from the Keralites and their bs woke movies and not from teluguites . but in the end south is just south and is anti Hindu. We will ban Netflix and boycott this movie. I request everyone to not watch Rrr to teach them a lesson. We also need to tax the south even more like 90%. Should teach them a lesson.

Movies like any art have social responsibilities , if you kept on making anti hindu references, then eventually you will be called out and it must be ...because these things normalises the hatred against one community. It distorts the history and present true reality ...nodoubt the humanity does not shivers at the genocide of certain community ...so yes it is important ..I am against banning and boycott ..that's why filmmakers should be sensitive, think critically , the best example is swades ...the movie has dealt with many evil practices but does not demonise community or people
