Yeah, I like the look of Merino - never would have picked him out in a million years, but he looks like an excellent fit for the L8 role. When you look at the players who have been given the vast majority of the minutes there over the last couple of seasons - Xhaka, Rice and Havertz - you get a much clearer idea of the kind of player Arteta that wants there. Merino shares traits with each of those three - he has a similar build and physical presence, he plays a high press, he wins duels like Rice, backfills and covers vacated positions like Xhaka, and can ‘crash the box’ like Havertz.
The way I think Arteta will be looking at our current midfield options is that he has Partey and Jorginho as options for the ball-progressor at the base, but only Rice for L8, so I think we’re looking at Merino as a rotation option for Rice - the +1 that we already need, regardless of whatever else might happen in CM. If Partey were to move on, I think there’s probably an entirely different set of targets drawn up for his replacement.
Him and Calafiori should combine to help generate attacks from the left side - feeding balls into martinelli and trossard to run onto. On the right there’s already white and odegaard doing that for saka. If Arsenal get him they could be pretty deadly next season 😂
Arsenal will never be deadly if they don't sign a world class striker. They struggled to beat average teams in europe.
@@andrecardoso6941 They only scored 5 less goals than city last season. Still pretty decent considering left hand side was weaker than expected that season. I do agree they need a striker but no decent value ones on the market right now.

Unfortunately I just don’t think Joao Neves was ever going to be a realistic option financially, so for the price I think this is a pretty good deal.

We can play Zinchenko as an 8, no problem. He will never play LB bcoz we have Timber and Calafiori now.

@@UncleZephaniah That will not work, for zinchenko to play as an 8, he needs better off ball movement, awareness and he needs to be able to carry the ball. He lacks the fundamental qualities of an 8 expect from passing

I think Merino is more of a Pep style player, then an Arteta type of player.
i also think Merino would work very naturally alongside a player like Rodri.
Nah Merino deserves a team where he will trophies at this point.
