Southgate’s decision making in general throughout the tournament has been weird. The guy would rather shoehorn players into awkward positions than rotate and use his squad wisely for the benefit of the team. Imo that’s a massive failure for a manager at this level.
Yeah, spot on. We can even go back further to the team selection, one of the problems with only picking players on form is it narrows down the pool of player that you likely will have to work with. There was an inherent lack of pace throughout the side, lack of running beyond and a willingness to create space. Then when you come to the tournament the seeming obsession with picking names over the balance of the side was something that with Southgate I thought we left behind, so unfortunate. I think over the years he has been harshly treated and criticized for his record, but this tournament with those decisions is borderline unforgivable for me.

He is woke, he believes in diversity, putting players where they don't fit, is normal for wokies. He probably told them not to go into Spains safe space and upset them.

Happened before SG as well, so you've got to start wondering if the FA know what they are doing if every manager they hire makes the same mistake
Pickford makes good saves sometimes but his inability to play out the back stifles England in so many ways. His insistence on going long every chance he gets and giving up possession is the reason why England struggle to create any sorts of patterns of play.
The kickoff went straight to him and he booted it long, giving possession to Spain after 15 seconds.
When England finally were putting them under pressure after the equaliser, he boots it long, giving Spain a goal kick and after that, England had to sit back and soak up pressure and then conceded.
He’s one of England’s bigger problems and I stand by that.
Finally, after 4 weeks someone has highlighted a real problem issue that I also picked up on (excuse the pun).
Even the keeper at Accrington Stanley doesn't play hoof ball as much as Pickford. Truly astonishing nobody within the camp - or the media "experts" - seemed aware of the enormity of this problem

Quite bias that you blame pickford for the possession loss but not rice and mainoo.
When keeper get pressure he had to make long pass to avoid error. Spain also play a lot of long ball in second half. However their midfield and morata is able to reclaim the ball.

Congrats to Spain. My grandfather tells me England won the world cup in 1966, so it's not all bad news for England fans.

Gareth is not a fool, neither is Frank Lampard. Yet both of these ex players have been given high profile managerial positions despite being tactical novices. We have a problem In the UK in assuming a moderately successful player can become a successful manager, just by 'taking his badges'. It's not enough, they are not being properly prepared and as a result they are failing. We need a managerial school of excellence.

It's a strange one, arteta managed the transition very quickly, from working under pep for a few years. How do other players not pick up mountains of tactical knowledge working under leading pl managers for almost 20 years. It is worrying that there is very little English managerial talent out there, we basically have Howe, Potter and Cooper. Carrick might have some potential but not sure he is ready for England.

OK this might be controversial, but here goes.
Have you noticed how many foreign players come to the UK and are more articulate in their second or third language than a lot of English players are in their own language? Harry Kane sounds like a delivery driver when he's interviewed. Compare him with a Juan Mata.
Intelligence. Pure and simple.
Intelligence on the pitch, understanding the ebb and flow of a game, Intelligence off the pitch, eating well, looking after themselves and the same desire to learn as they progress into management.
Every time I hear a "the boys done well, we should of won the game" kind of interview it reinforces my doubts about how we educate our players.And is that a top down thing so that players learn to unquestioningly obey orders rather than using their nous to sort out situations on the pitch?
Perhaps promoting a coach of the U-21 national teams to coach of the senior team and promoting those of the U-21 to their higher categories would help to have a group that knows the coach's scheme and that the coach also learns without so much pressure and instills in the players what he wants from them in general and at least, Even if you introduce new players, you always have a base that knows what it is playing.
English managers are not renowned for being tactically aware. You need French, Spanish or Italian coaches for that. Its just the way they are taught the game and the tactical aspect of it that is poor.
I think a lot of this Spain being able to do what they wanted was because they had nothing to worry about defensively. Kane can't run, Saka, Foden and Bellingham generally want it to feet. And we went long ball. Only way to hurt them was to pass the ball quickly but they don't seem to be coached to do that.
I am Spanish so I might be biased but during the whole championship every time Spain was challenged they seemed to have an additional gear. It happened any time the other team equalised or when we were losing.
Actually, only when leading the team made a step back and we suffered.
Anything could happen if the match would go to extra time but based on past performances you could expect Spain will raise his game.
Middlesbrough SACKED him, he was tactically inept and wouldn’t listen to reason.
I do think he has done a lot for England off of the pitch, that being said... on the pitch, tactically and especially going forwards England have struggled to get the best out of arguably their best players and ultimately that will be down to the tactics involved from the coaching staff, feels like such a missed oppertunity.

The Curucella/Williams/Rodrogo trip was the man Spanish attacking danger. Southgate had to stop this. This trio was evident from their first game.

The reason why we lost was having Southgate as the manager, his system and tactics were crap.
Unfortunately the game plan provided clearly had some faults and I think one of the worst decisions was the need to shoehorn both Bellingham and Foden into the same team without and care or thought for balance.

The reason England lost is that Spain is a far superior side . If England had to play the teams Spain played on their way to the final England would not have progressed past the last 16.
I wasn't impressed by Germany or France.
Statistically England are on a par with Portugal but stylistically have more in common with Belguim. People shouldn’t expect any more from them than the Belgians do from their team. The idea that England is some sort of elite footballing nation is nonsense - people really must forget about that. It only has its roots in the fact that the game originated in these islands, but it was the Scottish who really adapted and refined it. The World Cup victory in 1966 was due to home advantage, a handful of players who played like continentals and because three of them - Peters, Moore & Hurst were developed by England’s best ever coach - Ron Greenwood, whose West Ham side didn’t play traditional English football. The success at club level in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s was greatly assisted by Scots, Welsh and Irish players.
England has never produced players skilful enough (with a handful of exceptions) for the very highest international standards due to the league’s physical, results-oriented football (which is what the fans really want) and because we have still have not accepted the fact that coaching is a vital part of the game. Eddie Howe would be no more successful than anyone else - there have been quite a few since 1966. When Fabio Capello was appointed manager, he was shocked by the players lack of technique and confidence; the latter comes from the former.
Another fact that is not often appreciated by English critics is that a manager cannot do a good job without the necessary resources in terms of human material. Helmut Schoen for example was successful with West Germany and Del Bosque more recently with Spain because they had a lot of really talented players at their disposal. So, I think Southgate has performed a minor miracle.
Didn`t see Saka helping out Walker as much as Bellingham on the other side. In fact, when attacking , there were numerous occassions that Walker overlapped Saka only for him to pass it backwards.
Yes, happened twice. Very disappointing. Walker did everything possible to overlap and get behind the Spanish defence and Saka kept passing back into a congested midfield.
Precisely, I think the idea was to challenge the space behind Cucurella by keeping Saka high, but the amount of times it left Walker on an island was crazy, and if it doesn't seem to work and clearly is leaving Walker exposed then Southgate HAD to change it IMO.

@@user-gp5kh5tu4k Walker passed backways 9 times out of 10 when he did get into attacking positions so it wouldnt have made much difference if Saka had played it to him on the overlap. We needed Trent.
Saka being left footed leads to him passing backwards a lot, especially when receiving the ball deeper than the edge of the box. It's basically the same issue that trippier had on the other side, any pass down the line was often refused. Saka gets away with it because he pops up with goals, but he doesn't contribute to all round play enough and hugs the touchline waiting for that opportunity to receive the ball high up near the box and cut inside to shoot on his left foot. His right foot crosses aren't great so even though he was going on the outside of players it rarely came to anything (the one for Bellinghams headed goal was a big deflection) often being over hit. He needs to vary his game a bit more and threaten runs in behind and direct at goal from deeper positions. I can think of several occasions when we broke the lines over the tournament and were running at the back four crying out for forward runs to be made and he was stuck on his wing doing nothing.

I didn't see the second Spanish goal being offside during the match nor when they showed the replay and the "frozen image" where it showed the defenders knee to be forward? (iirc) What offside???

Absolutely, but he was more flexible because there was already a system in place for all of the players to understand and know, players knew their roles so when it came to making changes it was easier as it was always an adaptation of the system that they already knew. With Southgate unfortunately the system and style was either not in place or flawed from the beginning..

@@ZekkoFootball how much of knowledge of a system of play is down to the likelihood that those players are playing the same as they play week in and week out for their teams?
I wonder if most of those English players at top clubs play with the "new meta" the way Klopp and Pep have their teams press, move and pass. Exceptions for me are those at teams like Everton who have to play on the defensive more often than not - and Man U....cause, well, reasons.

@@unsaltedskies Doesn't matter what system you run or how much experience you have of pressing week in week out - Harry Kane was only able to mark one space and slowly jog around when others would have been pressing. The group stages showed even lower tier teams are easily able to pass round England's press due to Kane's lack of movement.

It was all terrible for me. All 7 games were awful to watch and he had the evidence of all this yet still persisted. Foden was non existent in every game and Palmer should have played instead of him for every single game. Kane was awful too and only avoided getting targetted for negativity becuase of 2 pens. Bellingham would have had 2 assists against Spain so cant be too harsh on him
I mean Trippier was also consistently part of that fluky results team yet he brings in Shaw right at the end who hasn't even played much. If he's being stubborn, just stay with that team, lol. Bringing in Shaw and Maguire for the final might have been ok but even then I doubt that
Southgate mugged off most of his squad with his stubbornness to play all the "best players" anyway, and left it far too late in every game minus the final. Bunch of superstars but zero balance. Gordon didn't get a chance at all. Toney was also mugged off and if you watch southgate consoling him at the end I firmly believe toney didnt care about southgate. No bond whatsoever
Every time they had an offensive momentum, it slowed down/pulled up, and ultimately ended up back with pickford. Boring 0-0s with fluky one off moments of brilliance is all he was ever good for but you can't win every game doing that. It worked (just) against teams ranked far lower than them.
I think you summed up England's tournament pretty brilliantly there, lack of balance/ the need for superstars against all ideas of a team dynamic. In the end the luck ran out, the moments ran out and if we're honest Spain deserved it. It's just such a shame because there was so much more to come from the players in this tournament, it just wasn't to be *sigh*

@@thydevdom imho, I wouldn't be surprised if the next England manager decides to strip Kane of the team captaincy and hand it to someone else like Bellingham for example. Keeping Kane on as captain will feel like a partial continuation of the Southgate era, and the new manager may want to put his own stamp on the team to look completely new and having completely moved on from Southgate.
@thydevdom couldn't agree more, I've had a comment taken down yesterday saying as much, be interesting to see what happens to this one. All England's woes stem from Kanes lack of pace, so opponents can throw men forward wherever space occurs, there's no great strategy, they play a high line knowing he can't chase a ball through or over the defence. If we'd started with Watkins and Palmer we'd have won, Spain ain't all that, give anyone time and space and they'll look good, even now only 2 of their team would make England's side.
There was an interesting comment from Olly Watkins in a press conference the day after he scored the winner against the Netherlands - the press asked what the main difference was between Unai Emery and Southgate and he said Unai would go into depth about tactics for a long time (something like that) and go on and on, whereas Southgate was much more relaxed. To me that sums up this match - one team looked well drilled, the other did not. In terms of the final itself I wouldn't have been against England dropping Kane and playing Bellingham as a false nine and letting him roam the pitch like he does for Madrid. The team setup was completely wrong for Kane as he likes fast pace wingers and the ball played into him quickly whereas Foden and Saka like to get on the ball and drift inside.
Is the manager asking Pickford to go long ? way over the top in this game, like watching sunday league, Pickford's delivery was piss poor. An absolute shambles !

Very good question, I thought this myself. If I had to guess, I'd say its a bit of both, I think Southgate was very concerned about Spain's press and would have rather been direct, having said that, Pickford does tend to get quite restless with the ball so it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't want to play short either. Regardless, as you say the delivery was shocking and essentially just resulted in England giving Spain possession over and over again.

England was not playing on the competing level to the other top teams. Spain vs Germany was the real Final followed by France vs. Spain. England was lucky it came that far …

I have been asking myself this question so many times.... The true answer I'm sure is that he is not that naive BUT if that was the case I would hope he would make some kind of tactical change. His game-plan for the ENTIRE tournament was flawed with trying to get Foden and Bellingham into the same side without changes, lack of pace etc. I wish I knew the reason for some of the decisions that he made.. crazy.

He made tactical errors in the last Euros, the final vs Italy was the prime example. Three years later he made exactly the same errors again, thank goodness he’s now gone!

You can't blame Southgate. It was obvious after he announced the team to go to Russia he didn't know what he was doing. He didn't take one player who could pass the ball and knit an actually very fast team together from midfield. Instead he went with defensive midfielders who can tackle but couldn't hit a barn door from five yards, hence us being penned in by Columbia, yes, Columbia. We had players who could do that job, we always do, but he left them at home. He treated that tournament like a warm up for the next Euros but in truth half the squad were never going to play for him again, as is the case with full international football. Half of that winning Spanish team will probably not make it to the next tournament. Southgate is loved and deserves credit but he never gave any indication he was up to the task of winning anything and should have been removed a longtime ago. He proves just how backward we are. In first half of the final we had the ball in the air for most it. Embarrassing.
I think this all points to tactical incompetence on behalf of England coach Southgate

Pep and Klopp have been tipped to be England's new manager, as of news from 14 hrs ago... ill take either. But I would preferer Pep IMO
Not sure Klopp's preferred playing style can be easily transferred to an international team. It took him a few years to turn Liverpool around. International managers don't get the time with the players to get more than their basics across. Not with the impatient English fans and media. They'll be expecting a deep run in the WC in '26.
Seems like you got your wish👀.... So who would you prefer, Howe or Klopp? Is there an element of England needing to pick an English manager? (not my opinion)

@@ZekkoFootball Klopp would be perfect, but very unlikely. So it's out of Poch & Howe for me. Either I would be happy with. Thanks to Gareth, but he got found out on too many occasions. His loyalty to players like Kane was ultimately his undoing. He frustrated me so much.
The reason he changed the formation is quite clear, it goes along with his thinking throughout his tenure, his first though is how to stop the opposition rather than how can we hurt the opposition.
Southgate didn't let cole palmer play early and didn't let trent alexander play. Saka and jude were completely overrated, didn't do anything in the final.
Palmer continuously had an impact when he came on and Trent wasn't allowed to play in his actual position. Shocking really. Saka I feel has contributed quite a few times and often has been England's most consistent threat, Jude has struggled in truth but for the final he was being asked to do a lot of tracking back with very minimal possession and service going the other way. The progression was always a major issue for this side and unfortunately Southgate hasn't been able to create a way of playing to allow his best players to thrive..

He wasn't a left midfielder - he was only a left midfielder out of possession. Listen to Southgates after match press conference - he said they were still 343 in possession, 442 out of possession

But he's still not a left midfielder out of possession/ he's not a left midfielder - period.- he doesn't have the recovery pace to go back up (like a Gordon), the 4-4-2 was far too narrow to help with the clear area that Spain has been dominating with the entire tournament; the wings. And I'm not convinced that regardless what he said they didn't progress with a 3-4-3 for a lot of the game/ no rotation, no clear pattern, barely any width, it was just a mess.

Should have went 3-4-3.Watkins over Kane second half Foden and Bellingham double ten Palmer in second half.And they should drop walker for arnold in 65 minute.
@rolosencja5057 drop walker in taa means that no defense on nico Williams. The substitution should be drop mainoo in palmer and drop foden in gordan. Bellingham plays as an 8.
Trent isn't a good enough defender, to defend against Williams.
He shouldn't have picked either Saka or Kane to have started. Both offered Zero effect. Started with Watkins, Palmer and Gordon out wide. Benched 007 no 🔥 FODEN too with Zero assists, Zero goals in 7 games.

@@elitedog153Because Southgate's system doesn't get them in the game at all. In the game against the Swiss, Southgate purposefully had the attack go down the right wing instead of the weak left, and it allowed Saka to shine. And against the Netherlands, he put the attack more centrally which was Foden's bread and butter, and he played his best game.
But for the final he opted for none of that.
Great video! The most frustrating thing, is most of the things you mentioned were obvious early on and southgate did nothing. He spoke of HAVING to play 4 at the back because of how spain play, such defeatist mentality. The players love Gareth, but I'd be insulted that park the bus moments football is all he thinks they're capable of.

Thanks a lot mate! Absolutely, the fact that there was no change was mad to me, especially with the way they were being played through. The thing is, playing a 4 defensively isn't necessarily the issue, it's the lack of supporting width in that formation i.e Saka not tracking (clearly told to hold to create attacking width to help them get out), but they clearly couldn't get out so something needed to change. The defensive frame that he works with has definitely hindered the players going forwards but I'd even go as far to say that his picture for how he saw England playing was just WRONG.

Quite interesting the post mortem! Both the Spanish goals were on the counter..first goal may be less so..but there were at least two great saves by Pickford of sure goal bound hits of Yamal..
To me the England back four lack the solidity and ball control, and that’s why in every match they were trailing .. that’s why Pickford had to go for long balls..literally they were panicky when challenged..never could effectively regroup ..match after match..That’s to me Englands Achilles heel..
Tactic of Southgate got you lot to the Euro final..
To me the talent and intent of Deco Williams Olmo Yamal Fabian Ruiz Morata..with Rodri marshalling the midfield..was more to the win than Southgate tactics..
Somehow, I cannot get over the feeling, that premier league, has not allowed the English talent to put up a cohesive and gelled out units…
Fought valiantly till the end , must change to a win at any cost mentality..

Yep, I feel like considering all of the criticism leveled at the England players and manager, Foden has gotten out of this pretty free. He had moments but overall there was a big case to have him replaced with a player like Gordon to give England a different dimension, it just wasn't a case that Southgate wanted to hear.

A great breakdown. Anyone who saw the Spanish side play in previous games knew the danger they posed on the flanks, I agree the tactics we employed were weird but still think the players we had could and should have adapted a little better as they must have realised the way we set up wasn’t going to work. I think a lack of a true leader or leaders on the pitch didn’t help, I would have liked them to have adapted to the situation despite of Southgate, even if it meant changing shape as best they could regardless of his instructions. I agree Spain were fantastic but the Germans had the right idea against them so that would have been wise to have had the coaches and manager review that game and plan accordingly imo.

I had the opportunity to see the game by tv and I consider that was a great game. I agree with you in the System theory, The Spanish National Team have been practicing the same system for a long time no matter changes in players or even coaches. Lamine Yamal have been training under that system since his arrival to La Masia in Barcelona at 6 years of age. You could find a Short on RUclips of Lamine at 7 executing the same move from the same side and taking the same shoot to the net.
You've highlighted my point a few times here, I was saying it before and during the tournament 'push Stones alongside Rice when needed' . Walker is quick to cover plus when needed Rice can step next to Geuye with his awareness and height.

Also, re 1 & 2, never has a manager been giving so much talent and yet squandered it, because the manager ineptly believes that England needs to play "Italian Cattanacio" or whatever, from the 70s and 80s; Southgate was given offensive players with immense firepower yet he refuses to use it, he makes them play Cattanciaao. It was understandable that Southgate played four at the back, because of Spain’s 2 wide wingers and their 4-2-4 formation in attack. However, leaving HUGE spaces in midfield for Spain to quickly pass the ball was unforgivable. Southgate had no idea what to do against a team that played this system for 7 games!!!! Bellibgham on the left wing, sacrificing foden to mark one player was laughable. playibg both Kane and Foden was a joke. Loosing posession like young children was also a bit embarassing for what are great players sailing on the high sea with lots of wind, but no sailing was enevitable. But then 2-1 was a good result given England side not have a plan, style or play at all, means i am happy it was only 2-1..

Yup, and the second one was a long punt up field by Pickford straight to the Spanish goalie. We're going to need a manager with much more flair and appetite for risk if we're ever going to inject some confidence into the England team. Not since Venables have I seen them flow with real tempo and play fearlessly against any opposition. We've had superstars come and go in the 30 years since then, but always lacking in composure in tight spaces; the inherent British weakness... Always scared to lose possession. In a way it's reassuring that negativity rarely wins. Spain fully deserved the tournament.
As a FM player since 2003,i understand that if u put players,as good as they are,in the wrong position or give them the wrong roles,u're in a losing game..managing a football team means recognizing each and everyone's strength & use it to create different sets of strategies and use them accordingly..something which i dun see when watching england play..usually before a game there would be debriefs and discussions on how to nullify d opposition & find d best form of attack.but i guess its all down to wat GS really wants..and all he wants is pushing d game to extra time+penalties.because u can't blame a manager for losing penalties.
I think you've absolutely nailed it here. You have to create a system that both offensively and defensively highlights the strengths of the players at your disposal, not just focus on getting all of them on the pitch regardless of balance.
I think a clear example of what your talking about with what Southgate wants is how it was 1-1 in the final and instead of trying to get England forward and on the front foot, Conor Gallagher was being readied. A lack of an offensive train of thought can't really be taught and that might have been one of the reasons England fell short.

Maybe it's the old Dutch malaise for England. Club side star players have too much pull in the dressing room. Or maybe the manager don't have the stones... or the know-how. Or a combination of all that. Southgate, as a player, didn't really play at the highest level. It shows in his strategy and tactics. Conservative. Focused on not losing rather than winning. And then there are the players with higher profiles than him. After the first game, Kane should've been dropped. That didn't happen. Either Bellingham or Foden plays at the tip of the midfield, not that forced shoehorning of both. He just didn't have the stones to do it. Then, there is the maintaining shape in attack, limiting opponent counter attacks but effectively culling creative output. The immediate retreat for a mid to low block forgoing counter press is another thing. It reeks of a desperate team out to frustrate a superior opponent, reminiscent of relegation sides facing the top 6 away. That is not how you setup a team with an attacking line-up that would rival any UCL winning side.
Spot on mate. You nailed it when you said about the conservative approach in favor of one that is more pro active. Focusing on the defensive aspect and stopping others rather than propelling your side forwards. In the end the system and the tactics didn't highlight the attacking strengths of the players in the side and yet again, it showed.

I think tactics worked well enough for England in the first half. There was too much horizontal play from Spain and their wingers never got the ball with time and space. Then someone in the Spanish bench realized England were basically man-marking Spain's midfielders, and a little bit of shuffling positions did the trick. If you take a look at the first goal, Fabián has come deeper, playing that ball almost as a third CB on the right flank, which was a first in this game. This drags Foden forward to press him (maybe he was still a bit lost as Rodri was subbed off and he wasn't instructed to keep marking Zubimendi, so he just jumps forward to 'stop' Fabián, which makes Mainoo drive forward too to close on Zubimendi). But thanks to Fabián's movement, Carvajal can then run forward, and Bellingham is caught in the middle as he also thinks he needs to go for Fabián as he is actually on his zone. All in all, Carvajal is now free on an intermediate position and when Shaw tries to close down on him, his superb first touch sets Lamine free, and then everything else falls into place due to the runs of the rest of Spanish players. You can't really blame Saka for not being there with Nico, his man would be Cucurella but he never went forward in that play so Saka had no real reason to track back (unless he was some kind of tactical genius who could have foreseen the whole move since Fabián played that pass). Now, for a big chunk of the second half, you could see all these little permutations from Spanish midfielders ripping England apart because English midfielders were totally dragged out of position by Zubimendi and Fabián, letting Olmo get the ball almost freely on England's final third and connect to the wingers on the fly. During that phase, only Pickford and a couple of missed shots prevented Spain from taking a more confortable lead.
Then, the second goal came from another brilliant display of technical skills from Olmo. Sure, the England's holding midfileders Rice and Bellingham were sitting too deep and basically on the right flank (because that's were the Spanish more dangerous attacking players were), but the key here is how Olmo plays that pass into Oyarzabal instead of looking for Cucurella's run. Walker was basically standing there, waiting for that obvious pass to the flank, but Olmo's ball somehow found the space in the middle to reach Oyarzabal. Then, once again, it's all about a couple of England players out of position desperately trying to make it there before their rivals - and failing miserably.
Kane isolated, the Spanish kept the ball under pressure. Spanish passing at their back line was causing endless shuffles across the back 6, the inept pressing meant Spain caused players to tire by half time. Spain played it in such a way that
Absolutely, spot on. The way that Spain rotated and passed the ball caused so many problems when it came to making those defensive positions and ended up catching England out, especially down that right hand side.

I wondered if he changed the system to have 4 at the back to TRY and have a full back on each of their wingers, and 2 cbs for cover.. obviously it was naive as hell and didn't work. It's honestly maybe the approach I would have had, which is telling in itself: I'm not a professional manager on 5m a year. I'm a car salesman. He went for the same idea as a car salesman.

The problem with still frame analysis is you are missing all the movement of players. Both goals came when England were caught in a transition trying to attack or press. When in shape and defending England looked competent containing Spain but with no attacking threat of their own. Formation was picked to nullify Spain's wide threats and it kind of worked until it didnt.

Playing 3 at the back would have been suicidal against Spain's brilliant young wingers Williams and Yamal. Saka stopped tracking back in the 2nd half (probably on instruction from Southgate) but both Spain goals came from down that side.
The 3 in theory would have been more prone to exposure but you need your wing backs to help, you can play both a 3 and a 4 but with the correct instructions to make the system. In these kind of games you HAVE to defend as a team and as a unit. As you mentioned, Saka stopped tracking, clearly to give Cucurella something to think about and give an out-ball that wasn't being seen in Bellingham, but it clearly didn't work and the space was monumental. A big shame.

But both goals didn't come from that side, the first goal is from an attack down our left against Bellingham and Shaw. Only the final pass goes to the right back area but by then everyone has been pulled across due to how we defended on the left.
I am afraid Southgate is tactically naive & does not know how to attack, His mindset is defensive, and England have a bunch of goalscorers who never got any service or a chance to score!, I am pleased Southgate has resigned, We need an adventurous manager who can use the players in the correct position & press!

I understand the grass roots of the Spanish but we deffo have the talent in our squad to beat Spain. I think its time for a manager than can take us to the next level now... The reason for the change to the back three was clear, explained by Southgate himself in his press conference and on the FourFourTwo channel in detail. Spain play a front three who press high and stay wide, meaning a back three would be too stretched trying to mark them, and if you relied on the England wing backs to mark Yamal and Williams they'd be forced too deep and would struggle to get up in attack, and would leave you overrun in midfield.
Therefore the four made sense. It worked extremely effectively in the first half, and contrary to what you said, Foden pretty much nullified Rodri.
The problem was the attack, which offered little. And Kane and those midfielders continue to be a poor match of styles.
The first goal is Mainoo, who is he marking? he should have ran back to take the player in front of Walker, leaving walker free and freeing up a centre half. Instead Walker has to go with the runner, when he comes inside this left the winger free on the outside to come in for an easy tap in on the far post. Walker was marking two Mainoo, nobody and cantre halfs sorting who they are going take in at the last second in the box! If Mainoo simply takes that runner, running through midfield! the rest is naturally covered.
Never rated him, lol. Still preferred trent as a midfielder tbh, but there's space for trent as a defender too. I think Trippier was still a better option than Shaw. Shaw looked very sluggish and slow to me
I think that's a good shout, the midfield didn't cover the off the ball runners very well at all and left the back 4 with too much to do. Same with Saka not following the Cucurella run, just not all moving as a singular unit and when you don't do that against the best sides, you get punished.

Disagree. By that point there's already been two passes that took out our entire midfield and left back. The pass into their advanced right back takes out Bellingham (and thersyof the midfield) and then the pass to Yamal which gets in behind Shaw (who starts to jump out unnecessarily to the right back making the pass possible). Then it's just a scramble and everyone is pulled across to our left. Geuhi has to go to Yamal after Shaw gets the wrong side of him, but Rice was maybe the one who was deep enough to adjust and get across to olmo allowing Walker to cover Williams. Mainoo Bellingham and Saka are out of the game after the pass into their right back, it's too quick from there.
Shaws decision to start to come out to the right back is probably the critical one, if he stays on Yamal then he can probably defend him even if the ball goes to him and the rest of the team has time to drop back. Shaws movement makes the decision for the right back who plays it forward quickly.
@@matthewdobson100 The goal came because Walker had to leave the far post winger to cover what you see happening on the left side of defence. The entire defence moves across one. If Mainoo tracks the runner through midfield Walker doesnt have to move and the winger is marked up and doesn't get the run to the far post for the goal. This is regardless of what happened on the other side of the pitch. The cross still comes in but the runner is marked by Mainoo and the winger marked by Walker. Walker had to mark the runner from midfield. The game is as easy as that.

Absolutely, they just didn't commit forward enough or dominate possession at any point, completely agree about Pickford's passing and the lack of England causing Spain problems due to this. I think Germany and Spain were by far the best and Spain just edged it for me with their performances against Croatia and France. The Cucurella is a huge shout and I was shocked that it wasn't given.

In the first goal at the beginning of the move Bellingham was caught out of position as well not following Carvajal. That's three English players caught napping (Bellingham Mainoo and Saka).
Joe Gomez would have been more effective at LB and Trent at RB with his attacking abilities available if you leave out Kane and have mobile players in Watkins, Palmer, Gordon, Toney, Bowen, etc. Foden and Saka contributed very little over the tournament.
I think Gomez would have been a good shout and Trent would have definitely offered more than Walker going forwards playing in his better position. Foden I agree with, Saka I thought was pretty consistent out on that right, what baffles me is that the left hand side was at no point addressed, madness to me.

England looked like United at their worst last season. They should’ve been set up from the end of the WC in very defined systems… 2 or 3 where every man had a defined role and no man is greater than the team. If that meant changing something for specific opposition and leaving Kane on the bench then so be it. The fact the England were still “experimenting” with Trent in mf during a finals tournament is ridiculous. Fair enough that Mainoo’s incredible season might mean changing a few bits just prior to the tournament is fine. If everyone else understood their roles then this would’ve been a simple transition. The fact that Gareth couldn’t see we never had a mf problem to start with cos Jude is clearly an 8 is beyond me. Then when he goes to a 3-4-3 why the hell is trippier on the left and Trent sat on the bench. He tried to shoehorn Trent into this team in mf when clearly his diags and crossing is best from out wide. Then he doesn’t opt for him when he’s the clear choice. Saka played well at r wing back that game but I’d argue Trent on the right and Saka on the left > than trippier on the left and Saka on the right. So frustrating. Everything Southgate did was wrong. The only thing he got right was going to a 3-4-3 but then it was clear he’s only don’t that to match up the Dutch… not to get the best out of a lopsided 11.

The players tried their best, the defence had a mostly outstanding night other than Walker being caught twice due to the poor system. He's been superb otherwise in this tournament. I felt so gutted to watch Shaw and Stones basically have their best ever game for England just for everything else to fall down around them. It's truly baffling why we didn't use the same system as against the Dutch, but just put some attackers in the right places. It's just ridiculous to keep asking players to play out of position, however good they are. Anyway, we'll be back. Again.

The lineup released pre match wasn't how they lined up when they took to the field. 😂
So the idea was that out of possession they would line up as a 4-4-2 and then progress with the ball in a 3-4-2-1 BUT in transitioning between them, what ended up happening was with the inability to get both Jude and Foden in those '10' roles and a lack of width from Shaw and not enough rotation or movement from Mainoo and Rice, this left England struggle to keep changing without any consistent possession and they ended up just being a mix of both - more like a 4-2-3-1.

He had no help from Saka. He covered 2 players for both their goals. Saka should have been replaced after the first as it was obvious he couldn't/wouldn't track back as needed. Southgate can't see the obvious.
What are you talking about. Walker was tracking the run of Olmo, if he leaves olmo to stay on Williams them Olmo is free. Defending is about threat analysis, organisation and communication. At that point Walker picks probably the right player to go with since they're the one going to the middle of the goal. The problem is everything had broken down by then and no one can shift across at that speed to push Walker back across to Williams coming on his blind side. Rice was probably the only player who could have gone over to Olmo to allow Walker to shift to Williams

To think Total Football was first developed in England by Jimmy Hogan back in the 1930s is an irony. Spain added to it and devoloped tiki- taka, but now combined with a more creative flow with the 2024 team. Tiki-taka has been variously described as a style of play based on making your way to the back of the net through short passing and movement, and yet in the final third Spain relied on the pace and dribbling skills and the cutting pass of Williams and Yamal. England lost possession and Pickford was giving the ball away as soon as he was booting the ball in the air ( to no one). That was shocking tactics, and Southgate must be blamed.
Yes Pickford errors meaning guessing or chancing where the ball is going. Both of their goals would have been simple saves if he waited before the scorers kicked the ball,1st goal he star jumped and the 2nd goal he went left instead of waiting on the toe poke he could have gathered up.Also previous games in this Competition,

I think Klopp is probably up there with his pedigree and managing acumen but as you say you do wonder whether there would be an issue with him not being English, Eddie Howe would be a good choice as well I believe, front foot manager, good player manager as well, he could make the step I think and also one person I would really look at is Lee Carsley, front foot attacking coach, currently coaching the U21's who won the U21 Euros with England in 2023.. he is someone that I would definitely look at. Who would you go for?

Southgate had Foden try to negate Rodri passing forward. On 442 the analysis shows that this worked. However this resulted in Foden not being used in attacking positions,even though he was the only one with a shot on goal in the first half.
This campaign shows how tactically inept Southgate is. He is responsible.He has to go,we do not need a manager who does not have a clear vision .
He did, it did work to an extent but I still felt Rodri and Fabian combined had a good hold on the game, this is why I would have liked too have seen the 4 man midfield from the 3-4-2-1 to try and pin both of them and allow the wing-backs to go forwards.

If the players aren’t comfortable with the system they are playing why doesn’t instinct take over? Or why doesn’t the captain or talisman shout out orders getting players to react. We used to have midfielders bossing the game. My grandson used his instinct in a tournament the other day. In the semi, he was in goal (his choice), his defender unfortunately headed in an own goal so one down. In the closing moments he instinctively went forward to try and grab an equaliser (being a striker, his normal position) but unable to. He was so distraught at loosing. He is 8 years old

The conditions and the pressure are immobilizing at times and the system is there to help the players when that happens, so if the system isn't suiting some players it is very difficult to just change things mid-game. At times there is no problem with taking the game by the scruff of the neck but you always need to remember that it's at the risk of unbalancing the team and the system in place, it's tough is what I'm saying and that's why I'm so harsh on the system.
Your grandson sounds top quality, like he's got the mentality to really make a difference, perhaps we will be seeing him in an England shirt in the future!👍

Spain were a team who knew how to play with each other in a system they have used match after match.
England were still swapping the team and tactics in the final of a major competition. No wonder the players were making mistakes. Madness.
The future is bright....i hope. The players we have. GS seems to be well out of his depth. Lets hope we can get a good manager.
I thought England had the Spain wingers very well tied down in the first half. The defensive shape was excellent. The problem was the lack of attacking threat. Kane needs wingers putting in crosses he can attack. That didn't happen. Given also that he lacked energy he shouldn't have played. The counter-attacking defensive shape needed quick runners to hit Spain on the break. We only had Saka. Rashford would have been ideal here. Watkins and Gordon from the beginning would have been an improvement. Bellingham was exhausted and should have lined up alongside Rice. So Kane and Mainoo had to be left out. Mr Southgate was brilliant at getting a sense of unity, great at setting up a defence, but poor at understanding how to attack. Oh, and England switched off at the start of the second half. I hope Klopp gets the job.
Personally, England's mistake throughout the European Championship and especially in this match, is not to take advantage of the offensive capabilities of some more than remarkable players and to embark on a war of trying to prevent Rodri from distributing the game, when in reality Spain has many more options to move the ball up and distribute it. The moment England really went on the offensive, our biggest problems came in the game and with them again the draw.
But a few minutes later, instead of continuing in an offensive format, England returned to their defensive format, waiting for mistakes... and we are going to recognize that Spain in this European Championship if anything has shown is not to make too many mistakes in passing, so the only thing that really happened is that we were given the dominance back and with it the options for one of them to materialize. And after the 1-2, one could rely on luck, but there was really little time.
And even so, there was a big scare saved between the posts.
I would recommend England to start by hiring a brave coach who knows what he wants to play and burns it into his players. Really De la Fuente, is that, a coach who has been growing in the lower categories of the national team with a large part of these players. I think this won't be the only final we will see ourselves in in the next decade, the question is whether England will have started to use the strengths of their players and if they do not meet a generation of Spanish players, they should be clearly above.
Or at least, I think so and what I have described is what I thought I saw from England during the European Championship.
But I'm sure England will see her in more finals in the coming years.
I knew we were going to win when I saw Foden chasing Rodri. They show they were scared.
I think for England there was a natural inferiority when it came to the game, the caliber of Spain, their performances prior, I think the writing was on the wall at that point.

Great analysis. A case, in my opinion, of shoehorning players into a formation and a style of play that didnt get anything like the best out of them, with no plan B.
Playing 3-4-3 would mean that Spain's front three could be 1v1 with our 3 CBs, so to stop the wing backs have to track back at it being a 5...he switched to a 4. Even then, formations are only starting positions, players can and should move where necessary
these were similar to United v City in the FA Cup final except it was in United's favor with similar stats' as England v Spain
The defacto final was Germany vs. Spain in their quarterfinal match. They were the two best sides.
The first goal is comical. Four players go over to try and sort Yamal out and just ignore the fact that Spain have 9 other outfield players, they arent even taking notice of Morata whos right there, nevermind Olmo and Williams. Its school yard stuff.

El fallo es totalmente de Saka, tanto en el primer gol como en el segundo. Debe bajar a defender y en ninguno de los casos lo hizo, ni siquiera siguió al lateral en el segundo gol. En ambos goles, todos le hechan la culpa a Walker, y Walker en ningún caso tubo la culpa, siempre estubo en contra de dos hombres. Walker also plays for City and Bernado Silva isnt the type of player to track back all match long so he should know what to do from experience. Walker completely misjudged the situation and showed a lack of awareness of who was playing with him on that side of the pitch.
No one seems to mention englands lack of ability to play out from the back. When they have the ball the rest of the team offers zero support or options. England players where lucky to have one player to pass to in the final while spain always had multiple options. That wasnt down to the press, it was england players remaining static when they had the ball.
Even with bellingham, foden and kane all playing a number 10 role we rarely got the ball to them because we couldnt get the ball over the halfway line.
After the equalizer, Tripper for Shaw, Trent for Walker. Bring in Eze to hold the midfield and take Rice out making 5 changes in all after Kane comes out

Don't get me wrong, whatever momentum is, I'm sure Spain had it.
But what is momentum exactly?
England havent ever been a good pressing team under Southgate, it was very evident throughout this tournament regardless of personel. The first goal was a prime example. Bellingham doesnt do anything to prevent the ball out to their right back and then Shaw starts to jump out to him leaving Yamal (the bigger threat) open who then drives across and draws in guehi and rice (with shaw now tracking back), with the runs from olmo and morata leaving Williams free. A series of poor decisons in the press and some excellent movement from Spain resulted in the goal. But if Bellingham cuts off the first pass or Shaw doesnt jump out and defends Yamal which he'd done pretty well up to that point, then there's a good chance we defend the situation.
All the tactics in the world wouldn't of beaten Spain
Perhaps you're right but I still believe we could have put up a better fight with a change of tactics.
