    I'm coming from an LG 34" IPS 160hz panel and I'm pretty happy with the AW2725DF so far. It's not quite as bright, but the colors, pop, HDR is sweet, and it's SO smooth in comparison. No eye strain so far, but I'll see how it goes throughout the coming week - I'm only on about day 3 now. I think I will keep the monitor, but it's good to know that all is not perfect, despite what you would see if you were watch only Badseed or LTT videos on it. Appreciate the honest review!

We will have to see what the offerings from other companies look like I guess. Hopefully they do not have the same issues. I guess the only good thing about this is the 3 year warranty that Alienware has would make it easy to get a new monitor.

      I have this monitor and everything about it is awesome! The color, the response time, the customization is solid. Only downside is it’s capped at 144hz through hdmi which sucks for me because I stream and will eventually upgrade to the 2.1 capture card which can do 240hz. So I won’t be able to use the monitor at a higher refresh rate while streaming. So I feel I’m wasting the hz capacity on this monitor. Other than that it’s a great monitor.

    Curved monitor + astigmatism can cause eye strain, I fall into this camp. I bought the 32" version of this monitor and I have a secondary flat monitor and it's a massive pain looking between the two. Interesting. I have astigmatism too, and I find my 32" curved display actually easier on me than any flat display. It doesn't force my eyes to refocus as much when moving across the display. Unfortunately, preferring a curve limits my choices to almost exclusively VA panels, not including this particular (overpriced) OLED panel.

    Im not an esports gamer so 240hz is way more then enough as i max out everything is 4K on a 4090, and still ill get 60-100fps at most.
    To this RUclipsr: Just lower the brightness from 75 to 35 when not gaming. When gaming up the brightness.

    Upsetting to hear. I have the PG27AQN and I love it, but I also have an LG 42" C2 in my living room that I watch movies on and play the occasional Forza sesh on (or any other game I like better with a controller). I wanted to combine the two, and was really excited for this. However, I just dont think OLED technology is there for monitors yet. QC issues are really apparent with these Samsung QD-OLED panels and W-OLED panels do not get bright enough. Then theres text fringing on desktop use, as well as the constant threat of burn in. Even though IPS isn't as good in terms of sheer quality; especially after this video, I still choose IPS over OLED.

    OLED for FPS games is for sure nice bcs of the minimal response time of the monitor. But it feels like the real advantage of an OLED is about single player games. Games with a beatiful crafted world where you can see the colors pop. Back then Ghost of Tsushima was a real treat to play on my QD-OLED TV. Even tho I feel that at times there was almost too much color pop. But thats more like a Samsung problem. For some reason when it comes to the TVs gaming mode they always brighten up the shadows and make everything just a bit too Korean for my taste

  • @WrexBF
    @WrexBF 6 месяцев назад +15

    A lot of people in the comments are blaming one thing, but the fact of the matter is that monitor eye strain can be caused by A LOT of things and it varies from person to person. The anti-glare coating, polarization, the pixel structure, the brightness, the contrast, the color gamut, the motion blur, the stutter, screen brightness relative to the environment, the type of backlight, pixel inversion artifacts, etc. It's literally impossible to keep track of all of them. It all comes down to trying all kinds of different monitors until you find one that doesn't personally cause you eye strain.

    • @Phil_529
      @Phil_529 6 месяцев назад +1

      It can also be a matter of just adjusting to the new monitor. I switched from a XB271HU to a AW2721D Nano-IPS wide gamut panel and it torched my eyes for awhile. I actually wore gunnar glasses for a few weeks. After 6 weeks or so my eyes had completely adjusted to using the AW2721D and the eye strain went away.
      I just replaced the AW2721D with the new 32" 4K version of this monitor and thankfully no eye strain to report.

    I have the same experience with the ASUS pg27aqdM (their 2023 flagship 1440p 240Hz OLED) and am in the process of returning it. It has incredible responsiveness and HDR in the right conditions, but the drawbacks outweigh that by a longshot in my opinion.
    The desktop experience is awful and causes the same eyestrain and headaches as in the review. Text looks bad, and anything other than HDR content looks dark and severely undersaturated (including non-HDR video and older games). Add that to the fact that I had to do so much work calibrating it, I have to use it in a pitch black room to get the best out of it, and I have to worry about how I use it to prevent burn-in, and I've come to the conclusion that OLED monitors are more of a chore than an enjoyable experience right now despite their superior peak performance under the right conditions.
    Funnily enough, my main monitor before I got the OLED was an ASUS ROG PG279Q (the grandfather of the PG27AQN in this video), and now I'm convinced I should just get the PG27AQN to tide me over for a few years until OLEDs are truly ready for prime time.

    Similar experience with OLED eyestrain, I've had LG C2 and AW3423DWF. The likely cause is flicker. While these panels don't use the typical Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) for brightness control they still have brightness fluctuations. Got mine two days ago and I'm pretty disappointed.... I already own a s95b qd-oled tv and thought this would be the end game monitor. But this monitor doesn't come close in visual impact, color and hdr performance to my tv, which is odd since the monitor is just using an updated version of the tv panel. I'd also like to add that pretty much every game today looks bad at 1440p for some reason. Text clarity is actually alright, but overall clarity with games @1440p is just dull and then the lackluster brightness makes it even worse.

    Eye strains is probably due to the coating that you haven't got used to it yet and about text reading. There isn't probably a better model out there other than 4k model but then you would be stuck at 240hz unless you go with LG panel which is 480hz as second mode!

    I've used the AW2725DF for a few days now, and I can attest to a certain "discomfort" while reading *desktop/non-game* text on it. Smaller fonts that you'd typically see on RUclips, desktop icons, word processing apps, emails, etc. are not pleasant to stare at. I imagine this is partly due to the intense contrast produced by OLED panels. The text looks fantastic and I don't notice any blurry edges on the letters, but it's bothersome enough for me to move the aforementioned content over to my IPS (Dell P2314H) instead.
    If this is going to be your ONLY monitor, I'd be very hesitant to recommend it. However, if it's solely for fullscreen gaming and perhaps video/image editing (due to excellent color quality), then it's certainly worth consideration.

    Good to know, my eyes are particularly sensitive to green highlights, so I'd probably experience the same issue.

    That's one the problems of OLED they flicker much more. Some brands may use a PWM with a higher frquency to overcome but maybe others don't. Another important thing is about brightness and its relation with flickering. The less bright a screen is the more it flickers because when you lower down the brightness, you are not really lowering it, they use a trick of turning off and on the screen in order to simulate a low brightness. Fresh you can always check how low the brightness on this monitor is and try increase it but keep it always in an acceptable value for your eyes of course and see if you feel better. Do not confuse PWM flickering with how many times a monitor refreshes.

    I regret buying an IPS monitor and wish I had just spent the extra and got the LG OLED monitor(or something similar).

      I would venture a guess and think it's the unusually subpixel structure that makes some have eye straining on OLEDs reading text. Unfortunately both WOLED (LG Display) and QD-OLED (Samsung Display) has other subpixel layouts than what Window's and most OSs are used to. This can be mitigated with higher pixel densities, say 4K at 27" panels or if Windows makes text render differently than up til now, or that OLEDs will have the normal RGB pixel layout.
      Samsung had a triangular RGB layout, while LG uses RWGB and will use RGWB in the upcoming panels, we shall see. You can also use a program called MacType, but it doesn't fix rendering for all programs. Good luck 👍

      @@MoggBoggTheSnoggRogg yeah that’s a very good guess. I’ve been using lg oled tv for a very long time and never felt any discomfort, maybe it had to do with the new Samsung qd oled layout

      @@wangmingchu1379 you probably sit farther away from TV than you do your Samsung monitor, harder to notice the colour fringing then. Also, as I said, they both have abnormal subpixel structures; LG's actually the furthest from atypical - it's just the triangle shaped RGB layout of Samsung that makes theirs also fringe, but differently from each other. If you have a game like Counter-Strike, hop in and choose a yellow crosshair, and walk straight up to your LG OLED screen, you'll see it fringe and look a bit off. 🙃

  • @mrxcs

    Also, about the eye strain, it maybe because of the pixel layout, because I have a BGR pixel layout structure monitor and I can't stand as the primary monitor, even excel gives me eye strain.

      Dell and other manufacturers give a 3 year burn in warranty.

      The LG 240 Hz OLED has equal motion blur to a 360 Hz Zowie TN Panel. Why would you upgrade for an imperceptible difference?
      Like, for some things I get it. There used to be a huge argument about 60Hz vs 30Hz and whether or not the difference was noticeable, when clearly it was once you had used 60Hz Refresh Rate. But diminishing returns are diminishing returns. I think you would gain a much larger, and at least a perceivable advantage waiting for a 4k 240Hz OLED vs a 1440p 360Hz OLED just due to raw image quality.
