"How to" In this video I cover the replacing of the clutch release bearing on all 020 gearboxes, the 020 also known as the "rod change gearbox" was used from 1976 in the mk1 Golf all the way to the end of the mk4 in 2004 so 28+ years.

Another option if you don't want to remove the clip holding the "finger" and deal with the spring, just remove the black plastic stop on the arm and pivot the arm downwards until the "finger" is out of the way, then just remove the bearing.
Polishing a non worn push rod to a chrome ball bearing finish on the ends will help it last longer. Adding some RTV sealant to the end cap will seal it 100% most importantly is replacing the push rod seal any time the transmission is off. If it ends up leaking your clutch will get coated with gear oil and wear out quickly. I grease my throw out bearings too. If the bearing doesn't have grease and you like to drive fast, they will burn up and leave you stranded.
Love from South Africa! I'm making 168hp in my Polo with the FFZ gearbox and it can take the power all day.
Also from SA dude. Did my box today, also ffz, however there is no drain plug for the gear oil..... is it the little spline screw OT is it the 17mm allen key plug on the diff side? Anyways, mine needed a whole litter of oil. I neglected it way too long
@@user-bm7tr9sf5n Hi bro, yeah the 17 allen key sits right at the bottom of the gearbox you will see it , more towards the bottom back of the gearbox. That's the drain on the FFZ. And the filler hole is the 17mm allen key on the side of the gearbox.
@@user-bm7tr9sf5n If you dont have that size allen key, use a 17mm bolt and weld a arm to it and make a tool like i did lol.🤣 Works out cheaper haha
now this kinda information is what the Mk2/3 scene needs .. well done.. this very information i was looking for quite some time. to swap out a bushing on that lever arm that is leaking like crazy.. and seeing while i do that i can swap out this bearing (y) thank you man :)
Thanks mate, glad this info came in handy for you👍🏼 check out the short shift video I also did for the 020.
Thx for the tip mate.
Iv been through enough gearboxes...defo chocolate...not killed them with clutch dumping,or shifting snapier than the synchros can match if you get me...but on my mk4 it was the bell housing longshaft side cracking X3 times....engine mounts where good not silly low or heavy wheels as running normal mk4 montreal 2 alloys...
Keep up the good work🙏
Thank you mate. 👍🏼
Morning my vwpolo classic is engaging very deep when putting realise bearing
I had an mk2 back in the day and had the release bearing issues , I drove that car for a year with no clutch (and I’m not lying). Starting it in 1st gear at every red light. Lol didn’t have the money or the care to fix it.
wow crazy.
Mais uma informação muito útil
Continua o bom trabalho💪
Obrigado amigo.
Hello, thanks for the info. May the release bearing cause the clutch to not disingage properly? Ive been having headaches for weeks trying to find the issue. The clutch is fairly new
You never showed how to do the other 2 seals?
Good video good info. In middle of my mk3 020 now blahhhhh. I just spin and jumps out of gear when I would try to put in first??....It leaks fluid out the end cap I think....
Glad you found it helpful, yep another dead 020 gearbox by the sounds of it.
Yes unfortunately I did more investigating since got it out and found many problems... Watch "1997 jetta 2.0 020 dif blow up" on RUclips

@@ChuckWaggon420 cool video, when the diff pop rivets goes it makes a mess of the gearbox case.
So I could possibly do this on my mk3 2.0 with the engine and transmission still in the car? The clutch engages fine, but there's a clacking sound when I push the pedal about a third of the way in
Yes you car do this with the gearbox in place.
Thanks for sharing this info. You showed the difference in the push rods, did you change this out as well? How long does a push rod typically survive?
If the bearing is good and gets replaced every time the clutch does it should and well last a very very long time, but then you have to take into account your driving style, as a lot of people sit in traffic in gear and foot on the clutch. Also best to check the ends for signs of wear. Glad you found this helpful 👍🏼
I have the same
gearbox and it's making a grinding noise when I release the clutch to move in any gear. I wonder would it be the release bearing
yes it does sound like the release bearing.
Just check the fluid level
Huzzit brah... I got a question for u , So I took my transmission/gearbox off to change my clutch which I did and I put the transmission/gearbox back in and this is where I'm having a problem, So I start putting gear oil in and then I notice it leaking from right underneath the oil pan like it ain't sealed or something so my question is does it take a gasket or something or how can I fix it... Thanks brah
Leaking oil could be one of the two seals on the gearbox input shaft, unfortunately you are going to have to remove the gearbox again to check which one, I would replace them both. Here are the part numbers 020301261A and . 020301215C
Real informative video - love it. I replaced my clutch kit on my mk1, fitted new release bearing and fitted a new clutch cable. The problem I am experiencing is when I push the clutch pedal weird noises come from the gearbox. The flywheel has been fitted correctly and sits nice and flush. What could the issue be?
Would appreciate your assistance
Normally that would be an issue with the release bearing. Have you replaced it?
@@RestoDesignsnando yip, replaced the bearing as well.
@@leepeyper So to be clear, it wasn't making that noise before replacing the clutch?
@@RestoDesignsnando 100%. Clutch was not making that noise at all before. Also after fitting the new clutch and bearing and clutch cable. I have adjusted the cable as well
I have a clutch with very little clutch movement/engagement . Could this be a worn pushrod?
Yes if you have a self adjusting clutch cable and/or it is hard to select 1st or R yet the clutch pedal is fully pressed down.
Can I get contacts of a person with mk1 spare parts please
Hello sir, I have a question, please I need your advice, my car is equipped with chv transmission. 18045 and under it is written 14 1. I couldn't find on the Internet what gearbox it is, it used to be an automatic before I bought it and it was rearranged. Maybe you can help me . I will be very grateful.
The CHV is a 02K gearbox this box looks a bit like an 020 but has a hydraulic clutch and slightly different linkage arrangement on the top.
Hi i hv prblem too wit my gearbox it has a grinding sound when i realise th clutch. I dont knw if its bearing problem or wat. Can u pls help
yes it could be the clutch bearing under that green cap or it could be the push rod plate at the clutch side.
Good day, I have problem with my mk1 , when I clutch the release bearing and rod are stiff to move in and out to select gear 1. What could be the problem?
Hi, that sound like maybe the push rod is slightly bent. But also the release bearing side sits in oil, check that there isn't any metal bits in the oil, that could also be what is causing your issue.
I have a problem with this FFZ box not clutching at all. The pedal wont come up once depressed. How to remedy that?
First remove that green cap it the end of the gearbox and see if the clutch release bearing hasn't broken up, also check by removing the clutch arm to see if the clutch release bearing pivot arm hasn't broken.
i am in the middle of a clutch change rn, i have the same gearbox, and i am kinda Confused about the tdc with the clutch, is it vital for the engine for the clutch to be in tdc?
No the engine doesn't need to be at TDC, the flywheel will only fit on one way.
@@RestoDesignsnando oh! Like the pressure plate. Thanks for the help!
@@kisatermi2275 Yes the pressure plate as 3 offset holes which lineup will 3 pins on the flywheel 👍🏼 you can't get it wrong.
Can it be possible to do everything as it's shown on the video then after all that car doesn't clutch?
No clutch pedal do you mean?
what is the name of those seals in the bellhousing? thanks
Gearbox input outer shaft seal and gearbox input inner seal
My mk4 pushrod keeps getting shorter and it keeps destroying the release bearing
I put new clutch kit and new slave cylinder the problem persist when the car idles I can hear the release bearing making a noise I have replace this about 10 times now always the release bearing and push rod PLEASE HELP!!!😭
That is very odd, have you put that washer that goes on the pressure plate in-between the crank? Is the metal gasket that goes in-between the engine and gearbox in place? Sounds like the gearbox is too far in(towards the engine) due to that gasket not being there, or the clutch is too far out, pushing against the push rod. So when you push the clutch pedal the rod is too long and kills the bearing.

please tell me what is the number of the green cover
Here you go 020 141 073 A
@@RestoDesignsnando Thank you 🤝👍
Mk4 has the o2j?
he said for the 1.4 and 1.6
I just swapped my clutch and now gearbox runs all the time unless i push clutch on the floor, is this a sign on this bearing breaking or did i do something wrong
Sorry I don't understand "gearbox runs"?
@@RestoDesignsnando sorry, what i mean is, even when i dont have a gear on, cv flanges keep spinning. I have not yet installed axles just in case i need to take it apart again
@@johannesperkio1829 ok that is normal. that's just the friction of the gearbox oil. Put the shafts on. 👍🏼
I really don’t like this type of gearbox, they are prone to fail. And they can fail in quite a few ways. They can just simply fail or cause a dangerous situation. Anyhow good video. :)
Thanks 👍🏼, yes totally agree with you, these boxes are bad news, one thing I have noticed of the years, a mk1 GTI 1.8 with 112hp will have the odd issue, a mk2 1.8 GL with 90hp will have the odd issue, yet a 75hp mk4 kills these gearboxes all the time. They don't like the extra weight at all, even with less power! 020 = Chocolate gearbox lol
Never, my mk1 has over 300000kms and never had my box fail....
Could of just removed the vw plastic clip to release the arm from the bearing
oh yes ok, thanks for sharing.
I think i lost my reverse gear :D atleast half of it, spins like half a wheel and then grinds and again half a wheel :P
Sorry to heard that friend, yes these gearboxes break reverse gear a lot and yours sounds like reverse is broken.
@@RestoDesignsnando i dont think that is too bad since i was going to try get atleast 110 hp out of aaz engine so if something breaks on stock power i know what i need to change for higher power output.
@@Tuonon3n nice 110 from aaa, torque is the killer, I bet your AAG has more than 250Nm
Should of just unscrewed the lid instead of doing all that damage to the green top. Would of took 2 mins easier
It's a push fit cap, new ones only about cost 5€ the green top on top of the box which is for the timing mark is the one that unscrews off, not the clutch bearing one. 👍🏼😉
