  • Probably the most important question I’ve gotten in a while.
Some people spend their entire lives battling against performance anxiety. Athletes have it the worst, in many ways.
Athletic performance is only part physical. The physical qualities associated with peak athleticism are relatively easy to improve. We have systems for doing so.
The mental & psychological qualities of performance are different. Even in the today’s world which makes a big deal about mental health for athletes, it remains a complex labyrinth that is minimally understood.
I don’t talk about the mental & psychological qualities of performance as much as the physical just because they’re less universal. They almost certainly will change from athlete to athlete. In a very limited number of cases can certain mindsets be infectious when it comes to success.
Michael Jordan is the best example I can think of. His physical gifts were wide-ranging, but his mental gift was simple: he never allowed anything he couldn’t control to get inside his head. He was eternally present.
Amazing how such a simple concept was responsible for gifting us the greatest basketball player ever.
