Negotiations are not about making both sides happy or both getting what they want equally. Sometimes it is not clear cut and somebody is going to have to lose and how the winning side mitigates the loss helps understanding and helps perception of fairness. For example, if two people are stranded on an island and they only have 1 knife, you can't exactly break a knife in two. You do equal amount of times using the knife. But what if only two people are alive in a submarine submerged at the bottom of the Barents Sea, who should die first to feed the other? Do you go by rank? Or do you toss a coin?

My problem is that there are regulations we need to comply... but my colleagues are completely against it. As the regulations are final, I doubt there is room negotiate for a different outcome. We cannot come to agree to a half compliance to regulations. I can, however, try to listen to their worries and see if I can change their minds or perspectives.

Someone help me with this situation of mine. I’m currently a licensed cosmetologist for ten years now. I just signed up and started this week at a barber school so I may get my barber licensed (so I can become dual licensed).
Now I only have to do 400 hours out of 900 for the barber license since I’m already licensed in another area, they give me a break. The school however isn’t structured with a scheduled learning material meaning whenever you start you just get dropped in whatever chapter of the book the instructor is on. So some could start at the beginning while others start in the middle.
Since I’m only doing 400 hours I was trying to see about negotiating with the school. I wanted to argue that since my experience excels the schools teaching, as I’ve been trained by licensed barbers and cosmetologist in the profession already for ten years, if I could just be prepped on the state board exam. Since it does no good or benefit to sit in random classes and not study the specific things I need. I wanted to see if I could be “gifted” the 400 hours, be briefed on the criteria I need so I can take the tests, and since I paid in full already there’s no issue on that part.
What do you think? Apologies if I didn’t get to the point fast lol

      Candidates:
The UK - which facilitated the return of the Jews in the 20th Century
The US - already showed prowess to do so by way of shuttle diplomacy (RIP Henry Kissinger). Also, can persuade ally Israel to agree to a ceasefire. Also, can plead to Arab allies to assuage Palestine (Hamas) to do the same.
EU - Because they have leverage too.
The UN - it should have from the start but the US always vetoes actions sanctioning Israel via the Security Council.
      Two cents have been dropped.

    Key Lessons from video:
    1. Focus on Interests, Not Positions: Shift from fixed positions to understanding the underlying interests of both parties to find common ground.
    2. Use Fair Standards: Rely on objective criteria to resolve conflicts, rather than personal preferences.
    3. Invent Options for Mutual Gain: Brainstorm creative solutions that satisfy both sides, leveraging differences to find innovative outcomes.
    4. Separate People from the Problem: Treat negotiation partners as allies, not adversaries, to maintain positive relationships.
    Addressing Challenges
    1. Dirty Tactics: Recognize and address unfair tactics directly without personal attacks.
    2. Power Imbalance: Develop your Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA) to enhance your negotiating power.
    3. Personal Attacks: Use negotiation techniques to sidestep attacks and keep the focus on the issue at hand.

You need to be an emphatic person to be able to consider the interests of others and not just yours in a negotiation.

1:22 Neither gets anything but the naughty step to teach them not to argue. Then, if they behave, be a decent parent and give them an orange each.

Interesting, the video talks about ‘fairness’ but every book I’ve read about negotiation always say to avoid the topic of what’s fair. In ‘Never split the difference’ the author made the example that if someone took your family member hostage and demanded $100K, what would a fair price be to get them back? The answer is $0 because they shouldn’t have kidnapped them and the $100K is completely made up.

Yeah totally agree, and that example about orange directly highlights that splitting the orange 50/50 what is considered “fair” is not a good idea, if only it was discussed prior then both sides would have gotten a 100% of what they wanted.

The first example is a bit of a cop out. What if they both want to stay in the same room with the door closed. Now that’s a situation.

Just turn the heat on and open the window. The librarians dad will come get triggered for wasting electricity. The other 2 men will get uncomfortable and leave.
