Almost No One Discusses This Wine

  • In this video, Bob Paulinski Master of Wine discusses a wine region that barely gets any attention on RUclips, yet its one of the best wine values in Italy. I’ll talk about Puglia, with a focus on Salice Salentino, a region that you should definitely know, one that offers wines with a true sense of place, wines like none other in the world. I’ll also taste and discuss a benchmark example.
For me, this region is starting to get a bit more attention, but not for the specific wine that I’ll be focusing on. The place is Puglia which in the far south of Italy, sometimes called the heel of the boot, it’s a narrow peninsula that juts into the Mediterranean, yet its still one of one of driest and warmest wine regions in Italy. There are a few DOCGs and several DOCs, but most are obscure and difficult to find outside of the local area. But there are two that see a good amount of export, I’ll focus on one I’ve been a fan of for more than 30 years, Salice Salentino, which is located between the towns of Brindisi and Lecce.
Salice Salentino has had a DOC since 1976, rules that have been updated many times since, but the focus here remains primarily on red wines. It produces nearly 1M cases annually. It was the first to put Puglia on the map to the outside world, but it’s never gotten its deserved attention. The primary grape variety used is Negroamaro, which means black bitter. The bitter part is more in reference to eating the fresh fruit off of the vine and not the wine itself. The grapes have a blue/black color and thick skins. It's rarely grown outside of Puglia.
The region is perhaps more known for Primitivo, but Negroamaro is the predominant player in Salice Salentino. Sometimes, small amounts of Malvasia Nera are used as well. I’ll be opening a Reserva which notes riper fruit, lower yields and aged prior to being released, at least two years, in old oak.

Mr. Paulinski: You have eclipsed the Wineking in my RUclips universe. Last week, I followed your recommendation to the Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d"Abruzzo from Costco for $12.69. It blew off my roof and I bought 4 more. That might not sound like much, but I'm mostly a Scotch guy and my wine cellar is 40 bottles. Today I picked up the 2019 Marchese di Borgosole Salice Salentino at Total Wine & More for 12.99 based on you last recommendation. Even better! More elegant, rounded, oaky, restrained--but also luscious with a lot of blackberry fruit and pie cherries. You are my new wine guru! For me, a big part of the fun with wine and Scotch is finding value--greatest quality at the lowest price. You are hitting it out of the park recently. Keep it up and thank you for your service.

I’m a BIG fan of Salice Salentino and have been several times. There are some of the classics like Taurino and some new school fine ones like Feudi di San Guagnano and Cantina Moros…
As fantastic as Negroamaro can be, I do think its ultimate expression is deep colored Rosato.

Sipping on a wine from the opposite of an unknown region, Rheingau in Germany. It's the Allendorf Winkeler Hasensprung GG 2015. The Hasensprung vineyard was one of Goethe's favourites, and that is actually the reason I wanted to try it! Among lesser known regions, I like Garnacha from Madrid and Sauvignon Blanc from Südsteiermark in Austria. Not the most unknown regions, perhaps, but not known to a general crowd.

Great Video Bob. I stumbled on Salice Salentino 35 years ago when I was a young, broke law student - it was my go-to “wine with food” for years . . . very versatile, enjoyable wine that punched way above its price point (which is what I needed with my student debt). Admittedly, after I graduated and had a few more bucks to rub together I migrated up the price scale - because, of course, more expensive means better, right? (Sarcasm is only in retrospect - embarrassingly I believed that at the time). Thank you for this video - I definitely am going to head to the store tomorrow and revisit Salice Salentino after a few decades!

I was lucky enough to be in Puglia a couple years ago, and visited Tenute Rubino, just outside of Brindisi for a tour and then a tasting at their waterfront restaurant. Among other wines, they are doing good things with Susumaniello, another of those obscure, thought to be extinct varietals. What do you think of it? We had a Salice Salentino Riserva 2016 in April a 80% Negroamaro & 20% Malvasia Nera, which was a lovely and mature wine. I agree that Malvasia Nera adds a floral and balance to the Negroamaro, though 100% Negroamaro is great as well. Not sure why it isn't more widely accepted, though if I had to hazard a guess, it would be Puglian Primitivo.
As there are too many jammy, extracted and overly sweet ones and this has a spill over effect on Puglian red wines in general. As your average wine consumer doesn't do deep dives into regions in detail and sift through the good, the bad and the ugly.
Underrated wine regions, IMHO: FLX, Washington, Dao, Bairrada, Bierzo, Baden, Rheinhessen, Somlo, Villany, South Africa as a country. I could go on, but I won't. 🙂

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Salice Salentino is one that I go back to time and time again. As for the jammy, sweet style from Puglia, there is a lot of Passito wine made. When I was there last, I visited a massive grape drying facility that readied the fruit for Passito. As for your other regions, it’s a strong list. With Portugal, one could throw a dart at the map and likely get a good result! Cheers. 🍷

Oh god no, might as well eat some jam straight from the container. Have some bottles that I just can’t drink … ready for the sink

I don't know which you've tried, styles vary by producer and vintage. The one is tasted in the video isn't the least bit jammy. Alcohol at 13.5%, typically the jam note comes at higher levels of ripeness. Or maybe its simply a style that you don't care for. These things happen. Cheers.

I’ve been there twice in recent years, including working a harvest about five years ago. Very good wines, limited international presence. I’ll check to see if I can access some good examples for a video. Thanks.

I like the Borgosole Brindisi reserva, another negroamaro, a little more than the Salice Salentino for about the same price. Both are decent and negroamaros are underrated.
