Young Homeless Girl in Toronto Hit by a Train a Few Years after This Interview

  • I met Terra in Toronto, Canada. An outreach nurse who had been helping her connected us. Terra is a wonderful, gorgeous 25 year-old woman who has lived on the streets for 5 months.
Terra tells a very real story about life on the streets. She doesn't like shelters because she was beat up in one, so she sleeps on the streets or in parks.
I hope Terra's story will stay in your heart and mind as it has with me. After this interview we took her to get some food. She is intelligent and funny, she just needs some extra love and compassion to change her life. The good news is the outreach nurse I was with is filled with that extra love and compassion and will do everything she can to find Terra some help.
Please support all health and medical outreach services in your community.
***Terra Gardner was hit by a train and killed while still homeless aptnnews.ca/2013/05/15/first-n...

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

@2high Campos what an ignorant way to look at things... i feel sorry for you that you live in that kind of mindstate. often times in peoples lives they CANNOT change alone and NEED the help of other people. we are all in this together and honestly to think that if you changed that you did it 'yourself' is ALWAYS ignorant. you cant do anything 'by yourself' by virtue of living on earth. everything you do will always be intricately interconnected with other peoples work, path, love and stories. nobody is ever alone no matter how alone they feel inside.

It’s pretty sad and scary that she was a witness in her friends murder trial, received death threats and was seen with 2 people at the time of her death. The police and DA should have protected her. They would barely give her 2 nights in a room when she was needed for a 5 day trial. The people that put her in danger and left her vulnerable should be held accountable.

The police in Toronto failed this young lady. She was a witness to a murder and the police forced her to testify and threatened to hold her in jail if she did not testify. She told the police that she was afraid to testify because testifying would put her safety at risk. They put her in a hotel room for two days and put her back out on the streets and refused to protect her. Her life was threatened multiple times on the streets and right before trial she mysteriously died from being hit by a train. The lazy police did not even investigate and quickly wrote it off as an accident. SAD. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

She was a mess by the time I got there, and I feel they did not give her adequate protection for testifying in a major murder trial where she is being called a rat and being threatened. we had to literally beg to get her a second night in a hotel and she was testifying for five straight days. If you’re not meant for it just like don’t have a kid, I know there are circumstances that happens and such but your job as a parent is to keep that child safe because they didn’t ask to be put in the world and especially kids younger than like 10 have so much innocence. How could anyone mistreat children? It saddens me because kids bring so much light into the world. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not fit for motherhood nor will I have children but I doesn’t mean I resent them in anyway, I just know that I wouldn’t be the best parent so why bring a kid into the world to struggle ya know?

It doesn't mean as a parent one should spoil their kids no, if you bring kids into this world it's your burden in life to see you do the very best for them and that also means preparing them mentally for the harshness of this world.

vi.is.roadkill Opossum who said the girl in the video is on drugs? She’s only homeless. I think you’re referring to yourself, and I think you should stop casting your negativity onto people who only mean well. Love is always enough, people result to addictions because they want to rid themselves of all their anxieties because they lack true self love and confidence that comes from a good home. She didn’t have one, and if she did, none of this would’ve happened to her. Children between 12-18 do drugs as a way to get acceptance from others knowing it’s bad, yet if you came from a home that was heavily built on love and acceptance knowing your parents expect more from you, you’d stay away from these things. It ALWAYS starts in the home, and love is ALWAYS enough.

She could've stayed clean, went to school, did the right thing... Its much harder to do the right thing than it is to do the latter... Even if you grow up in a shitty household, you still have a choice at the end of the day and most people choose to be a shitty person just because they grew up in a shitty environment. Just proving that determinism is right and that none of us have free will...

zendokai You are a sick human. Such a horribly warped sense of things. I think it’s all projection though. You so desperately don’t want to end up being this way you just reject completely that perhaps there’s more to it than choice. Well it’s not all choice. Suffer something traumatic, lose your family, lose your job, begun suffering from a mental illness and maybe a medical condition. Those things aren’t a choice. But if they should happen to you then you could find yourself there too someday. And you know it. Deep down you know it and you hate it.
