Delilah Says Homelessness Is Better Than Working in a Beverly Hills Hair Salon.

- Delilah is young and homeless. She says that previously she worked in a Beverly Hills hair salon and that homelessness is much better than cutting hair for angry, mean rich ladies!
Delilah says she is enjoying her freedom while she is young enough and healthy enough to have it. She wants to live a minimalistic and nomadic lifestyle.
Delilah relocated to Los Angeles three years ago and has been on the streets for six months. She had various living arrangments. Delilah's last roommate throughout all her stuff and now she is just trying to make the best of it.
Delilah's boyfriend has been homeless for many years and she started to live with him on the streets. She was already spending weekends with him in his tent, so homelessness did not come as much of a shock.
Delilah plans on traveling and then if she wants to change her lifestyle she says she will.
One of the foundations of Invisible People's work is to present stories of people experiencing homelessness raw and unedited. Delilah's story is a little different than most because from the outside it looks like she is choosing to be homeless.
The last few years I have seen more people deciding to live a minimalistic and nomadic lifestyle. Van dwelling is now a thing and becoming more popular. I think part of the reason is the high cost of housing and the lack of good paying jobs.
I used to think no one wants to be homeless, and that is the truth for the vast majority of people sleeping outside. Even the ones who tell you that want to be homeless, at one time they tried to get out of homelessness, but after hitting so many barriers, they just give up. It’s called “learned helplessness.”
I think Delilah's story is important because so often homeless youth choose this lifestyle and then it's nearly impossible to get out of it. The streets in any city are very dangerous, especially for young women. Although Delilah says she wants to be homeless there is a sadness about her. I do believe she is making the best of it and that love probably played the biggest role in her current situation. I just pray she gets off the streets while she still can.

Working for the rich is the worst thing ever. I did it in the past, never again: these guys are amongst the worst human beings I've ever dealt with. I'm starting to believe that money can really turn some people into monsters, it's scary.
Exactlly and I came to same conclusion. I was so surprised, I am pet sitter and usually people who hire me are normal working people who just want some poty break and excercise for their dog while they are at work. A while ago I was hired by foreigners. Very irresponsible people and I'm actually thinking of giving them cancelation notice.
I worked at a private airport for rich people. They would call ahead so their plane was pulled out of the hangar, fueled up and ready to go. It paid less than 10/hr and even though I was trusted to pull and fuel their $24,000,000 jet they wouldn't tip and acted like I was vermin if even one of their desires was not foreseen and met. I used to like airplanes.
In order to become rich, you pretty much have to be a monster - they were already like that and money didn't change them.

seems to me, her only real "sadness" is stemmed from stigmatisms that society put on her. She, like all of us, was raised n brainwashed by this mainstream machine , to Think a certain way... once she breaks her mental restrictions/programming, she will be happier than the richest man on earth... the person who can source their own needs from nature, and live happy without any material extras, is truly the happiest person... their happiness cannot be taken away, unless the earth itself is destroyed. THAT is powerful. Far from sadness. I pity millionaires with no true friends and tons of life expectations- WAY more than I ever pity someone like her... She is truly free. She is truly unique and filled with spiritual essence...no sadness at all..

She looks well and healthy and she says she's okay, but I sense a deep sadness in her. I remember a time in my life when I used to talk like this: when my voice and my whole demeanour contradicted the words coming out of my mouth. I didn't even know I was sad, or the depths of that sadness, and I lacked the words to articulate what was causing it. She may not have realised in 2017 that the horrible roommate and the bullies at work have caused severe PTSD, so I hope she's got some help by now. A kind, beautiful soul like hers deserves a good life.

Yeah, she was ripped off by her roommate, it happens a LOT, unreal. Her whole situation blew up, roommate and her employment at the same time, then things went downhill fast. She's putting up a good front but I sensed a lot of sadness. People can talk a good game but her eyes and demeanor tells us more.
She doesn't want to do better than her boyfriend at the moment because that would cause them to break up.

Roommates don't always steal everything from someone without notice; it's likely she wasn't paying up because she was providing for her dude, not enough money left, a formula for eviction and worst, she likely started showing up late at work because of her new found lifestyle. We've seen this play out before. Travel?, where?, you're living in a tent ⛺, broke, and more than likely used and abused by your dude for drug money. This is not what it appears and she's not the only one; it's truly sad.

Even if it's just that she was unlucky or naive with the roommate initially, it doesn't sound good that she is emotionally close only with somebody who's been on the streets for years and apparently she doesn't talk to her sister or family right now. She's most likely emotionally dependent on him and isn't ready to leave and get her own life back on track. She's so young and doesn't have that street-look yet, I assume she would be on top of the list if anyone around there is helping the homeless. But she doesn't seem to realize she's not on some hipster vacation, the longer you stay, the deeper you'll get into trouble. Possible that she was using something herself already when she was working... I believe the rich customers are horrible but it's nothing new under the sun that a job comes between a user and her drug, and they blame anything else but the addiction for the quitting. Or, her "drug" was the new boyfriend.
The majority of people in the the U.S. live pay check to pay check. I'm always surprised at how cruel people are to the homeless considering how close they are to being homeless themselves.
Trust me America sucks as a whole. I’ve never felt safe here and I was born and raised here.

As long as your willing to work you'll never be homeless. You might have to work two jobs but I believe it's doable.
I couldn't live with myself if I allowed my own sister to be homeless. That's messed up, in my opinion.
Edit: to all the ignorant people commenting assuming my relationship with my family is made in heaven, no. My sister's been kicked out of school, jobs and shared apartments, been addicted to alprazolam (Xanax), owed money, and worst of all, attempted against her own life three times. We NEVER gave up on her. She lived for a few months with me while she sort herself out and looked for a job. Nowadays she is living with my mom, has had a stable job for over a year, is clean, and paying off her debt.
When I say I couldn't live with myself if she were homeless, I mean it because we've been there. We all struggle with family but what sets us apart is we don't abandon each other when we're less than ideal. Specially since the three of us are all the family we have. Maybe it's a cultural thing.
It sounds like she chose to live that way. Some people prefer that. I say that while I'm lying in my Terperpedic bed with my nature sound machine going because I so don't relate.

@Beerdy I agree, despite the comments who cannot see that a pretty woman who turned away from “capitalism” to be with her homeless boyfriend is not a typical homeless person who’s down on their luck. The idea of “rich old women” being something to be diametrically indifferent IS A CHOICE of detriment towards her own future. And, like you said, she will change her mind when she has chosen a path wrongly and obstinate to what she would naturally be inclined towards wanting stability, children and family. Hopefully she makes that determination before she loses the luxury of what she has been afforded youth, mobility and attractiveness.

I was homeless for a couple years when I was young. I remember when I came to the point that I had nothing left but the clothes I was wearing. I felt a deep since of peace and freedom. I felt almost like i was re-born with a fresh start and everything could only get better from there, and eventually, they did. I will never forget the experiences from that time though, the good and the bad. In my 50's now and I would not be able to handle that again. I am grateful for the experiences I had because they shaped me into the person that I am today, but times have changed and so have I. I wish Delilah the best for her and that she finds whatever she wants out of life.

If you became homeless you would thrive in that community. You already know the ropes. A change in attitude would be a bit difficult but the transition would be short because of your past.
Being homeless in a warm climate, has definitely got to be better than being homeless in new york or new england or any other cold place.
Yup. Being homeless anywhere east of Nevada sucks. Surviving a winter in places like Illinois, Michigan, and the Eastern Seaboard is lethal.
Obviously since Southern California (LA) has almost perfect weather year round. This is why there’s such a huge homeless population over there. At least Phoenix is really hot in the summertime so this is an advantage and prevents any more homeless persons coming here.

I worked as an assistant for a dental clinic that had very rich clients.
It’s not just meanness it’s also mind games, the low pay, and being screamed at.
Me and another assistant were supposed to prepare the chair and tools but the owner and client were chatting in front of the entrance.
We tried politely to pass and she screamed it was rude to interrupt a conversation.
We stood there and they finished talking the doctor saw the chair wasn’t ready and screamed again when I say I want something done I want it done now.
Or picking up an order of soft drinks left at the door and being screamed at that they can’t have non Diet Coke because her husband is diabetic and I’m trying to kill her husband, when I wasn’t the one who sent the wrong order I just picked it up.

@@dw7922 I worked in hotels and bars when I was a university student in the UK. The middle class and wealthy people were absolutely disgusting, and behaved like animals, while the working class people were almost always lovely and would ask how my day was going and what I was studying at university. The only time the working class people were awful was when they got really drunk at the end of the night and looked for fights with other men, and then they'd swear at the employees when we kicked them out. But normally they were fine.
It was the same when I worked in New Zealand. People on middle incomes or high incomes would act rude and self-entitled because they thought it made them look rich and important. The tradesmen were awesome though. And the crazy thing is the trademen were earning more than the faux rich people who inherited from their parents.

I'm so frustrated by people saying the homeless are just lazy. My uncle was a well-off bank manager, but became homeless due to mental illness. He was gone for almost 10 years when a family friend saw his picture in a paper, apparently a kind stranger tried to help him reconnect with his family. Sure enough, we found him. He lived with us in the house for three years. Due to his condition we never pushed him to get a job, we were happy to take care of him. He had a warm bed, free food, free cigarettes and nice clothes we gave him. Yet, one day while we were out shopping he disappeared again. He was gone another two years, and when we finally found him again he had developed severe Alzheimer's and looked even worse than the last time. He is now safe in a mental institution, because we are afraid he might take off to the streets again. Everytime we visit him he'll tell us his delusional secret plan of escaping the facility. It does not seem like he really understands what the place is and why he is there. I'm just happy to see that after all he has been through, uncle Hans still has some sense of humour left.
Funny story about uncle Hans: he would ALWAYS go for seconds at dinner. While he stayed with us, this one time my parents weren't home and I had to cook for him and my brothers. I was maybe 16 at the time. Since we did not have mince in the fridge, I decided to make some myself by putting steak in the blender. I also added some unused instant noodle beef flavouring, because why not right? The end result was some disgusting meat paste mixed with pasta. That night I heard him say "no thanks, I'm full" for the very first time. Not even a former homeless man would stand for my cooking 😂

Had an uncle similarly worked in a bank, but developed mental illness after falling off a ladder. His life changed after that. Be very careful of your footing guys and watch out for others close to you.

She started out smiling and saying she liked the fresh air and to travel. I was waiting for an adventure story and I got a sad one instead. She shouldn't be getting her "Fresh" air while panhandling along the boulevard and "traveling" to a new freeway overpass to sleep at night. People don't fake depression, they fake being OK.

I deal with wealthy and poor at my job, I’ve never noticed wealthy people being self absorbed, they usually can teach you lessons with businesses they’ve built over the years. Oh man does this ring true for me. The vacant, empty stare and convincing yourself you're actually better off homeless than working in a toxic environment. Realistically both are bad and I hope she got into some sort of facility.
You can see that she’s still unwinding from that terrible work experience. The job obviously ruined her mental health. Toxic work environments can kill, this is what people need to understand, that some people kill themselves because of mistreatment at work. Abuse kills.
@@WhoWho569 yep. I worked my first retail job and after a year and a half of torture, I was fired shortly before I'd quit. Boy was I unprepared for that mental bootcamp. It took me 5 years to even consider re-entering the retail workforce as I was marred by it and never wanted to work in a customer service environment ever again. I can tell you that it still gives me anxiety, but I've gotten a little better about it. Maybe I'm starting to forget how bad it truly was. Anywho, I've spent all this time working independently and doing odd jobs that don't involve much socializing. I'm trying to get back into a career but its nerve-wracking to even attend an interview. Corporate work culture can wreck people's heads, that's why I hope I can reach financial independence someday and dodge the rat race entirely.. some people were made for it, but others will fall to the wayside

Being homeless beats being in an abuse work environment. Facilities are dangerous too, rampant assaults and thefts, scummy employees, abusive police, etc. Hope she finds a job that treats her right and pays her well.

I think there is a group of people who aren’t “disabled” enough to qualify for government assistance and are too “disabled” to hold down a 9-5pm.on top of that transportation and the cost of housing makes it impossible for some people to be employed consistently because they never recover from being evicted or being fired. It’s almost impossible to find a job if you are homeless and lack transportation. Our country thrives on a guaranteed underclass of people in poverty and unless you have a compassionate family or a group of people to help close the gaps on basic needs getting out of poverty is nearly impossible.

@@fearless3073 it’s not about fault. Employers aren’t flexible enough to meet the needs of everyone. It’s about having the willingness to provide accommodations as they would for someone with a physical disability.
Sometimes thinking of being homeless sounds so freeing. No more mortgage or other bills, no more working at a job you don't like, no more family obligations, no more car trouble. I wouldn't last long in the streets, but I still fantasize about it.

I’m a cosmetologist/ barber and I can somewhat relate to what she said about hating her job. I would never personally choose to be homeless but dealing with different personalities all day is tough. I make good money but believe me I work hard for that money lol. Some people are just bitter with the world and treat others like trash.

It doesn't make sense. She implied that shes working. Homeless is terribly dangerous for young single women. Violence is the norm. As an adult man, even I was paranoid that at anytime while asleep someone could come up and kick the shit out of me while trapped in a sleep. There were a string of brutal attacks in Denver. It's just not worth the risk to avoid cutting hair, which honestly is far better than day labor. It can't be worse than minimum wage for digging ditches or heavily lifting all day long.

Turn out, she was a narcissistic self entitled woman, who constantly thought negatively about me. She moved out, on her own free will. Back to the street where she came from. I couldn't care less anymore. I've given her 7 chances to fix her attitude. She just won't change.

There’s so much more to her story. You don’t just dislike working under rude people so you choose homelessness. Not everyone is made to conform to societal standards and has the capacity to keep taking losses when you sincerely try your best. One thing she is right about is if she is able to keep her mental sanity and emotional regulation living on the streets she has the privilege of looking like the kind of person that can easily turn things around with personal will.
I have never been homeless but a few years ago I took a homeless married couple in that I knew. Gave them my whole basement rent free. Even let them drive my 2nd vehicle. All I asked them to do was 1) keep their living area clean and 2) work hard everyday to find jobs, save money, and get back on their feet. They trashed my basement, wrecked my truck twice, and lied to me about their employment/lack of employment situation. That was my good deed for the homeless of my life and I am done. Never again. I refuse to help anyone who won't try to help themselves.
Michael Whitlow sounds like someone i know, this guy has a 15 year old kid that he hasn't seen in years, refuses to pay child support, lives with other people off and on, can never pay rent because whenever he gets paid any money from working a side job he gambles all of the money away because he is a gambling addict and ends up getting thrown out of these places and always ends up being homeless as usual, and he gambles his food stamps away every month too, and doesn't want to try to get a real paying job, people have tried helping him before but always ended up being a lost cause
Had a similar situation with someone close. Paid their rent several times to get them off the street. Told them to get some mental health help and stay sober. Did neither. All it does is enable them.

My mom is homeless in California too, but she lives out of her car and works for the post office so she makes decent money. She lost her place last year, so she keeps her stuff in storage/her car, and showers at a gym. I always ask her if she’s lookin for an apartment or would move out of state but she’s content not having major expenses or responsibilities financially.

Ex homeless here, and I agree with a lot of what she says. Lost my job and my ex left and rents were too high in seattle. What the experience taught me is that the endless pressure of capitalism is a stress of a different kind from the stress of deprivation, and in many ways far worse. Having freedom of time is so critical for the human mind, and I lacked all of that when I was working before.
Now I am very fortunate in that I found a place to live that is relatively cheap and I have a job that allows me to work very little. In a way I feel like I've found a small quiet patch in the center of the swirling storm that is capitalism. I don't know if it will last, but if it doesn't I know that I would prefer to have my freedom and deal with some privation than work 8 hours of my day for someone who only sees me as a tool to make them more wealthy.
The people though, the people were hard. The worst parts of being homeless were not the weather or the lack of things it was the people - mostly the people who are not homeless. The existential fear on display in the anger (seen on the street and in these comments) is similar to the fear I felt before I was homeless. You need to degrade these people because if they are not like you on some fundamental level then you can never become like them: homeless. It still makes my heart sick to see how cruel fear can make us as a species.
Wow, your comment really makes one think about all the things we stress about in society that's so trivial and pointless. It's ruined us really as a whole. We worry about status and materialism...where does that get us? Unhealthy and miserable. I've had a great job and Independence to having no job and being a SAHM who depends on her fiance for pretty much anything needed, making it where he got away with things I never would've done...I've been kicked out and homeless for nothing that was my doing nor anything I'd put anyone out for even if it had been their fault. It was heartbreaking...I was so scared... Never rely on anyone's promises. Even the most standup people will surprise you.

I went through a homeless phase. It was pretty chill. I had two jobs. I worked 60+ hours a week, got to keep most of my money (aside from taxes, car payments and insurance). I had my car and slept in the back seat. I also had my hammock. I used to sleep by a waterfall near by during it's busiest hours (so I felt safe) I had my radio and a book and I just looked like I was enjoying the park like everyone else. Which I was!!
I kept my cold foods in the refrigerators at either job and would pack sandwiches for myself after clocking out. I'd freshened up at Wegmans in their family bathroom before work or at the gym. I washed clothes at the laundromat while I'd watch netflix on my phone. I kept a suitcase of clean clothes in the trunk of my car and a pouch with makeup and washes.
I'd hike a lot, sun bathe, read, sleep on the beach, it was hard sometimes sure. But it had more pros than cons.
I had a roommate but we didn't didn't vibe well. We had a townhouse apartment but it only lasted a few months. I paid her rent but she stopped paying THE rent. I was dumb and co-signed our lease. I couldn't afford to pay the rent fully on my own. I also called her out for talking to her supposed abusive ex boyfriend, who we got the apartment to get her away from. She had a new boyfriend but was still talking to her ex and letting him pay her phone bill and laughed about him being a fool for catering to her. I told her she was making her life and mine a joke if she was going to allow him in her life and asked if she was really ever abused. She stopped talking to me and living in that house with her was one of the most toxic and energy draining few months of my life. She moved out while I left for work one night. I had a feeling it was all for show and that she just wanted me to leave. I honestly thought she'd move back in if I left. The sofa I slept on had been hacked up and when I came home from work in the morning the cushions were placed back on but if I'd sayt in it I would have been stabbed. I packed up my things and gave my keys back to the rental office and told them we'd both left and to change the locks.
I'd picked up the second job towards the end of us living together, but it wasn't in time to keep the apartment. It took some time to get my first paycheck. I was embarrassed but I even asked my pastor if I could get any help from the church. But we were 2 months behind in rent and I still wasn't sure that I'd be able to keep up the payments.
The back seat of the car wasn't always comfy, and I'd day dream of having a living room to just watch a movie in or invite friends over to. But honestly now that I have a place again, with my boyfriend, we haven't had anyone over. And I feel so lazy. I've gained like 25 lbs where as before, I HAD to find something to do. I was always on a trail, going for a drive, looking for new places to explore. I went sky diving, which I never thought I'd do. You find things to do when it's too hot to sleep.
Working day and night though did leave me with very little time to sleep and I would get deliriously tired at work sometimes. I would sleep for 2-3 hours at a time sometimes only getting one small pocket of sleep in a 24 hour stretch. One time before opening the store I meant to take a st john's wort (for a healthy perspective on the day) and ginseng (for energy) while I waited for my cashier after I'd just gotten off of an overnight shift at the wholesale club and I accidentally took a melatonin. I was seeing stars exhausted that day. Have you ever been so tired that you literally felt sick? I swear I was seeing colors that day. I crashed in my car in the parking lot after work that afternoon.
I had my storage unit with an apartments worth of furniture and I'd swap out my seasonal clothes and shoes and rotate books, drawing books, comics and jewelry. I wanted to become a minimalist and gave much of my things to thrift stores. I started to realize that I didn't need a lot of it.
Waking up at 4am with a strong urge to pee and walking into a Wawa or walmart half awake to use the bathroom isn't fun. But it's something you can chuckle at later.

2015 was such a strange, hard, beautiful year though!
That was interesting to read I lived on a 24 hour luxury gym parking lot for 3 weeks it was the same hard at times but I was working out all hours of the day stretching out by the pool reading for hours it was alright. If I may. Would suggest a sea change & moving to the country & working on a Farm. Has the highs & lows of risk but has more freedom & reward then the city. While the street comes with "freedom" a Farm would be more useful to you in stability outside of course backpacking & Vagabond/Gypsy Lifestyle.

Dude, I did it for a year and a half. It has its ups and downs, like any lifestyle. If your gut tells you to do it, do it. People around you probably won't understand, which can make it tough. I'll probably do it again because I miss the freedom.
i literally gave up a thriving business and sold everything to go live like this. Its a process, im training for it, to live off grid in harmony with nature sourcing all my own needs, and still coming into town to mingle with the public... this is how you beat society. This is how you truly Win at life.

Nearly 10 years ago I sold all of my things and left home, just drove. Ended up in Florida, got a job the same week and lived out of my car. That time I was the happiest, productive and carefree I've ever been, mentally and creatively. Made a fun group of friends, established my regiment at the gym and public bathrooms, and i didn't require much. Some days off id just sit in a parking lot with snacks and a blanket watching RUclips. Now I have a desk job, a Mortgage, 2 cars, a fiance and my mental health is nowhere near the quality it used to be. It's difficult to know what you want out of life, it's best to learn yourself and Guage what makes you happy. Sometimes that means sacrificing some "luxuries", but eventually you'll appreciate that you did. Don't believe the hype. Happiness is determined by YOU and what YOUR needs, don't live through others and set your own standards.

I used to work as a LVN in CA, 9-5 job, was passionate about it, made 26/H, and it still wasn't enough to pay through the bills and rent and became homeless anyway living in my car, campground, parking lots, and motels.
I don't blame some or many people that are homeless since life is very complicated and society VERY expensive! I just hope and pray for the best for me and everyone that's struggling in this world.

California is a very expensive pal and lots of requirements to rent a home -- most rental homes in coastline CA are from 1.9k to 4k and need to win triple of that. The salary at best looks like a proper minimum wage for California.

In California standards, it isn't much. To rent a home you have to make up 3 times the rent and your average CA home are from 1.9k to 4k which is more than what I earned as a LVN -- also you need references, great credit, etc...

How many of us could decide to stop working for 1 year just to enjoy 365 days of free time? How many of us could tell our bosses that we were going to work only 50perc of the time even if accepted to receive less? Modern world made almost all of us money slaves, with the illusion we have to work hard do fullfill our dreams and have a good social reputation but in fact this idea was created to make few very very rich. There are exceptions i am sure of that and even people that work as volunteers for less than a hot meal but with love and dedication.

What they share in common is resourcefulness and trust in themselves which is earned through experience and hardship. Entrepeneurs face all kinds hardship initially too. They think outside the box which brings to them lower lows and higher highs in life compared to the average person. The beautiful irony about having nothing is that it makes you realise you need nothing, suddenly you want nothing, and it's a wonderful place to be. Yes, she is clearly sad, but she's also peaceful. This is a transitional state, a recharging period. She's aware of this too, she said she knows she has options for the future.

Hm". She was younger, which was appalling because of the disrespect, ans the older woman, through learned behaviour just bowed her head down and accepted it. This happened often clearly and was not mutual laughing matter. The younger one was also looking for such things to say when it made no sense to be comparing because i had much longer thicker hair

This is heart breaking, a young lady with her life in front of her living in a tent....hope she broke free of that vicious cycle!
So for some perspective, I’m also in her position. After getting out of the Marines, I went back home to South Carolina and realized how much I hated it back home. I made the decision that I would rather be homeless but happy in California over working and being miserable back home. I left everything behind with 500 dollars in my pocket and the items I could fit in my car. My first day in San Diego, I got a job as a line chef and have been living in my car ever since. I enjoy the freedom. And for those saying we do it to avoid responsibility, you’re absolutely right. No one likes paying bills. So I’m going to avoid that by staying in my car. Is it the comfiest? No. But it’s a choice that saves me money and stress and gives me more time and energy to focus on being happy now in the moment :)

i was homeless too and i know how she feels. She was probably betrayed by someone who she listens to. She doesn't have mental strength to love herself because she feels like it's her fault somehow. She needs someone to have faith in her.
I didn't read that at all from her. I think she was content and at peace. She just didn't want to participate in society anymore. That's a healthy impulse.
Maybe she feel betrayed by society. She moved to LA to study cosmetology and ended up working with nasty clients who obviously don't treat her with respect only to get fired and then berayed by a roommate. After getting destabilized in this way she may have given up for a while. I don't buy her ever so casually romanticing her decision.

What I see in her eyes is not sadness as exhaustion. As one who was homeless ( albeit for a short time, less than a month) I personally know how difficult it is to get a good night's sleep-she's probably living on 1and a half to 3 hours sleep most days-what you're seeing is the effects of long-term sleep deprivation, a torture technique in many countries

Very difficult to pinpoint the reason for homelessness. A little research will always turn up the same four reasons. But if we are to have an honest conversation on the homeless subject, everything starts with the deterioration of the family unit. When I got divorced I dedicated the next 11 years of my life to not only be a part of my children’s life but to be very much involved on a daily basis. I was always a friendly parent but never a pushover. On numerous occasions after working 8 hours I sat down with my son and daughter for two or three hours doing homework. I helped them fill out their resumes. I made sure they had transportation to get back and forth to work. Thank the good lord today they are both productive citizens who contribute to society. Let’s be honest, many of these kids are abandoned, marginalized and forgotten by family members. They’re also fed a daily diet of BS on the streets about an unfair playing field where they’ll never achieve anything, a message that will keep them on the street.
