    Red mites are the worst. Or that is what most people call them 😂 But we all mean the same - small, orange/ red, incredibly hard to spot, and they attack new growth. And the dark/ light test works too! Also you can use damp cotton pad and wipe the bottom and tops of the leaves (typically towards the new growth) and you will see them on the white cotton pad. They are tough to kill but what works for me and all the collectors from Sweden (where I got this tip from) is to use sulphur based fungicide (that also works as acaricide). The one I use is called Kumulus. Usually one treatment kills them, but I do it twice. It leaves white deposit on the leaves that you can always see on my hoyas 😂 but I don't care, it kills the bastards. There is a more insidious type of mite that burrows in the tissue of the new growth and that one is basically a death sentence. The Swedish collectors call those top shoot mite, but I am having a hard time pinpointing which exact mite it is 🤔

    • @KnotDude
      @KnotDude  2 года назад +2

      I rarely ever see them on leaves. Just the stem and around new leaves on the petiole. I'm going to look into the fungicide because honestly they need to DIEEEEEEEEEEEE

    A friend introduced me to the commercial miticides Tetrasan and Minx2. They are made by the same company and you can buy small sizes of it on eBay. The tetrasan targets the eggs and the Minx2 targets adults. I had a bad case of false mites in my cabinet and had treated every plant multiple times, but the combo eradicated them on the first application. I hope that helps!

    I am a soil person. I consider trying leca, but haven't done it yet (something new to learn and I know what I'm doing with my substrates). But I have bought several hoya starts from local peeps that were rooted in leca. I leave them in leca while they acclimate to my home. When they are ready for up-potting, I just move it all into my chunky soil mix, leaving the leca the roots are attached to. I think people over-think the transition to soil from leca. Just don't disturb those baby roots. Make a basket with fingers, lift it all up en masse, and put it in your preferred substrate. Hasn't failed me yet.

    I could be wrong but I think what you have is false spider mites. They appear reddish orange and they don’t make webs. They are crazy small so seeing them is nearly impossible. They sometimes leave trails on the leaves that look like a wrinkly indentation. They tend to go for the sweet spots right we’re leaves connect too. And they love new growth! I’ve used AzaMax with success. It saved my elliptica.

    Hey, Adam! Great to hear from you! Thanks for the video. I just wanted to pass on some info about a method for spider mite eradication from miss orchid girl. She has videos (several- gotta find the right one) on the subject. Granted, it’s for spider mites on orchids but I wonder if it may work for your nondescript mites on hoyas or other plants. She actually has 2 methods that both work on the same principle: smother the bastards. One is a mineral/paraffin oil based mixture and one is plain old leaf shine in a can. I’ve had instant success with my orchids (flat leafed phals) and some success with hoyas and other plants. With the others, I have to be more diligent about application since there are more leaves that are not flat expanses like the Phal ( more nooks and crannies). I’ve been lazy after bringing my plants ( hoyas, Phils) in from outdoors and things are getting a little outta hand. These are the methods I will try first. Just a long winded FYI. Good luck on your pest mgmt. 😊

    Adam, have you tried a jeweler's loupe for pest inspection? Hold your infested plant over a clean sheet of white printer paper. Tap the foliage as vigorously as necessary to dislodge the mites. You'll see specks. Now, use the loupe to get a close view. Also, try using the camera on your smart phone and enlarging the resulting photos. Lastly, and most fun, buy a kid's microscope set! Get your sample bugs and place them on a slide and you'll be floored at the detail! You can also look at the tiny details of flower and leaf tissue as well as everyday small objects that might amuse you. You can get a junior microscope on Amazon for $85 - $100 if so inclined. I got it for my kids in 2005. They got bored. I still take it out and play with it!

    I do a super chunky moss mix. So; moss, coco chunks, horticulture charcoal, worm castings, perlite or pumice, leca at times. My favorite part of the plant realm is making mixes to test. And for my soil, I just add in coco coir.
    I found black little specks in my prop boxes, weirdest thing was that there was no damage to the plant. Which I still don’t know what they were, but they looked like mites. Of some kind. Root mealies have been the most stressful for me. But, consistency is key- as I’m sure you know!

    @karenpowell4626 2 года назад

    Wow beautiful silver dollar! Is there a link to where you purchased it?
    I also use a prop box but use a brick if coco coir that I hydrate and just stick the cuttings in. I usually put a small shot glass of water in to keep the humidity up. This has been fantastic and the cuttings can be transferred to leca, pon, soil or any other mixture easily. I get them at the dollar store so I have more to spend on Hoyas, lol.

    Yay! I haven’t been this excited for a video in a while!
    I recently switched all my props and boxes to this method. Totally gave you credit on Insta 😉 .The little cups make all the difference for taming those roots and you don’t have to transition from on media to another.
    I found the cups (but white) and soldiering iron (they called it a heat knife) at Walmart. Also those bins are the Best! I’m wish I would have bought more before they sold out.
    Sorry to hear about the mites. I think I’ve been dealing with them too. I thought they were red spider mites too but like you said -no webbing. I’m slowly getting it under control (I hope)1 room at a time.

    I’ve been struggling with a Hoya Australis Lisa that I purchased recently. All the things you described are happening. I tried separating the healthy parts from the diseased parts and put them in leca. Unfortunately, one of them is still diseased. You have given me hope as I have all the supplies to spot (hopefully) and treat my once beautiful Hoya. Thanks for a great video.
    One question- did you just throw the diseased part away or did you tried to quarantine and prop what could be saved? I hate the idea of throwing away a salvageable plant.

    • @KnotDude
      @KnotDude  2 года назад +1

      My issue with my hoyas was not a disease, it was a pest. If it is truly diseased, I am not sure it will get better.

      @@KnotDude Thank you. I looked for pests, but didn’t find any. The dropping leaves are perplexing. I’ll try to prop the remaining stem. At this point there’s nothing to lose.

    I just use sphagnum moss and high humidity it works the quickest for me with propagation. I also have found some species prefer a lower pH which sphagnum moss has and need a lot of air particles around their roots. I have others just with pon. There really is no one soil mix for the species.

    • @KnotDude
      @KnotDude  2 года назад +1

      Exactly and that's why Hoyas have my heart! I have a few in Pon but I really need to get some more/make my own. my polynuera absolutely loves Pon! I may try some sphag on a few cuttings soon.

    • @frasercook5823
      @frasercook5823 2 года назад

      @@KnotDude I have used Pon where Doug has complained about LECA particularly for the species (UT033, forbesii, rangsan) that don't grown in the Hoya 'mix' and its been a better alternative. Hoya Chlorantha started to get interveinal Chloris so I just put it back with mostly all moss and now stopped. Then you have the ones that grow in Lime rocks. I love them so much too.

    I straight up stole 2 single leaf cuttings from my daughter krimson queen a couple of years ago. I stuck them in a local shop's company secret mix and thought "At least she still has the whole ass plant so, if this doesn't work I can steal more cuttings." Their mix is magic. It's a new whole ass plant now. Those red mites, I have no idea what they are but they are everywhere outside here, I have even seen them on my atv tires when it's sitting in my driveway.

    Hey Adam! Thank you for the vid. I have never propagated one of my hoyas and this was helpful! Just to be sure I'm understanding correctly, you are saying that I can cut anywhere along the stem to propagate (rather than finding a node, or in the case of some plants like string of hearts, having to cut off a couple leaves and stick the area the leaves were cut from in the soil)?

    • @KnotDude
      @KnotDude  2 года назад +2

      Yes that is correct. You will need a node with leaves for a successful prop but the node does not need to be in the potting media! Just the stem. Hoya are amazing :)
