I have been using MARS hydro lights for over a year now and I am loving how my plants grow under them! They grow faster than before and all the hoyas get lovely foliage. They also bloom more often than they ever did - some I was not able to bloom until I put them under these lights and they also bloom very early on, often as soon as they are rooted, while they are still small plants.

My face says how excited I am to have to water these hoyas more.
😂😂
I know this may be an old video but I wanted some help with my hoyas and boy, did you deliver. Thank you Miro for your experience and suggestions as well as your excellent commentary 😂😂😂
You lost me when you said that you've never eaten a taco 😂😂
The start of this video is soooo funny 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
What an encyclopaedic and erudite presentation on this topic! Immediate subscriber with thanks!❤❤
I find that big leaf Hoyas need more water because even if they aren't thick like H. obovata or kerrii, they have a lot of volume to keep hydrated.
That’s for sure. My latifolia species require sooo much water.
Perfect! I've been thinking this past week I need a list of hoyas that need to stay moist. Haha Love your videos.
I totally agree with you. I have experienced this. I followed the entire “let your Hoyas dry out. Shock them into blooming” advice. I am an chronic under water as well. My most of my Hoyas suffer slow growth and not 1 bloom. A few weeks ago I increased watering. All my Hoyas are showing new growth. I have killed 3 caudata hoyas. Hind sight is 20/20. I under watered it. I have very common hoyas. I had a Hoya Chelsea that had 2 leave for a year. I recently put it in a plastic bag. It almost immediately put out new growth. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Not sure if you mentioned it, but H. obscura is one I've heard people struggle with. I decided to "over water" it, and sure enough it's growing beautifully under my grow lights (AND despite the 20% humidity cause, "Oh Canada"! It's almost wintertime!)
I also sing "thirsty" songs to them, like "Rain on me"... it was one time, and there were no audible objections. They also grew exceptionally well the following week. That's a tip only us "pros" know, though...
Always a treat to sit down and watch your videos! :)
I found the same thing to be true with my H. Sunrise, just got an Obscura so this was very helpful
This was great Miro, super informative. I started collecting Hoyas in 2020 (I didn’t understand the appeal until then 🤷♀️) and I totally underwatered them for the first year. In 2021 I moved to self watering pots with organic soil and I was amazed at the speed of growth and the size of my leaves! I’ll never go back to pots that aren’t self watering 👍
Can you recommend a brand of self watering pots?
Lots of interesting stuff you've given us, and I thank you for taking the time to present the material so well. This past summer, the Hoya Australis (I think) wanted water nearly every day and has consequently exploded with vigorous growth, having had three blossomings. It is the size of a bass viol, one leader playing with the ceiling. Vancouver, Canada. Even though we are in late November, she is growing new leaves and producing vast systems of leaders. Large plastic pot, orchid-mix with potting soil and some sand. Some of her leaves are huge for the variety. She has devoured the two bamboo trellises I provided, and some of her older branches are beautifully grotesque and seem to have a blatant agenda - the takeover of the entire apartment building. This year I found some new varieties (late to the game), and now have four kinds. Two of them are in clay pots, but they are glazed, so do not absorb water - and they are beautiful. My feeling with them (as a novice) is that if one gives them a large pot, they will spend time looking dormant, but they love to investigate their medium, growing roots like mad. Once they've a good grasp of their home, they become unstoppable, seemingly with an uncanny strength. Your collection is amazing - way beyond the capacities of my dwelling - and it is evident the pleasure you take with your babies.💐
I have exactly the same with one hoya kerrii, on lacunosa and one obovata. The smalll kitchen looks like a hoya jungle!
It always confused me when people say do not over water your Hoyas🤔. I lived in Asia for half of my life and Hoyas are being rained on 9 months of a year. So definitely they like water but it should be in a well draining media😁.
So more frequent.... but this ? my question. I get a nice chunky mix.. i water and it runs thru immediately..how much do i let it run thru before walking away? Shouldnl itnstill feel heavy? Do i let it run thru and walk away?
@dana102083 if you let the water run through and get rid of the excess from the saucer, that should be okay. As long as the substrate is wet, but there's no standing water it should be fine:)
Thank you, Hoya Master Geek!! 🙏Love this channel!!!💕💕💕
Hahahah Hoya Master Geek is so much better than Basie Plants 😂
@@BasiePlants Deepest bow, Master!🙏😂
I have watched this video several times. Especially, when I have aquired new Hoyas. It's so nice, Miro, that you have such expertise and share your experiences....along with humor and facial expressions 😂😮😊. Thank you and take care! ❤
This is such a helpful video. Really appreciate finding this 💚💚💚
Question, I just got a larger Mappigera. I saw you mentioned you had one. What have you seen it needing from a watering perspective? Mine is in ambient conditions.
Thanks again
Thank you for all these helpful tips! Now I know why I lost some of my Hoyas.
I am also more likely to kill them with underwatering than anything else 😅
Miro I live in Texas and I grow Hoyas both inside and outside. The outdoor Hoyas have amazing growth spurts. Thank you so much for all your advice!
I've started to write on my calendar when i do certain watering xD I don't have a schedule I just like to have something to refer to for my more tricky babys, also I moved my bellas out of a grow light and into a window and I swear the next day one of them started to grow its first peduncle, the water requirement for bella is now worth it
You're so effortlessly funny :DDD And full of knowledge of course
Thank you 💚
I found out the fun way post vacation that some of my hoya don't like drying out. RIP half the leaves on australis lisa, but only a few on my mathilde, heuschkeliana var., linearis, polyneura, and latifolia.... for some reason I thought the hoya would be fine, not true
I think my Hoya Australis Lisa is a thirsty one. It was doing ok when I used to water my plants more frequently but now that I'm lazier, it keeps dropping it's new leaves. I thought it was maybe a pest issue but your video has given me the possibility that it's may need more water. My other hoyas are doing well
Amazing and such a helpful video, thank you!
As usual aways a wealth of information thank you 💚
Glad to hear you think so!
@@BasiePlants 😁
Coming to Hoyas from my (chronically underwatered) orchids, this is exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Glad to be of help :D
Your videos are always so enjoyable 🥰
Thank you 💚
I am also a chronic underwaterer😢 but the way you described the many reasons you might not water on time resonated with me so much 😂 I can’t tell you have often I lay on my couch and sadly watch my plants die in front of me hahaha anyway, working to be better at that! Your video inspired me to be better to my hoyas! You’ve got a new subscriber!
I am a watering inspiration?! That is going on my tomb stone.
Thank you for the information given today.
Since I started collecting Hoya plants I have been watering more than recommended because I noticed they needed more water. I like your videos and love your Hoya collection.
Have a great day and week 🤓
What a wonderful thing that I found your vlog. My first hoya cutting just arrived in the mail. I was only dipping my toe in the water because i didn't know the genus at all. With your good information supporting me I think I will jump right in!
Once again, a really informative video. Thank you.
Great video, lots of important information! One question tho, did you end up watering the variegated obovata? 😂
I have several on your list and find the same the need more water than people think.
Your Hoyas are beautiful. Thinking of trying some more hoya!
I thought I heard lambii somewhere lol got it yesterday and thought well she cant be that bad 🤦♀️🤣and listened again your videos for some lambii info and well well sign loudly and said OH FFS 🤯🤯😡 why the hell I choose to have diva lol 😆
Wow!
My humidity levels are so low approximately 20-30 % in winter and then 50-60% during summer
I suppose I should water more in winter since it’s so dry and they lose moisture thru their leaves
Great video! Do you have a video discussing cooler temp loving hoya?
Now we need to know what Doesn't like to be overwatered. (;
Miro thank you for blessing us with another yet again funny yet very informative video. 😂
I have all my Hoyas in self watering pots and they grow like crazy. 150+ Hoyas
Love the memory test for watering 😅
Unexpected for me: I haven't had my pachyclada long, but the bottom leaves soften up so much in between waterings, and when I notice that has happened and water promptly, it seems happy. In my home, it seems to need water more frequently than many of my other Hoya.
I forget where I saw it. Someone said Hoya serpens are very prone to rot. I’ve been letting mine fully dry and it seems fine. But I’ll definitely keep a closer eye on it now.
I used to let mine dry out fully and the roots def rotted slowly and the new growth just stopped. Now that I water it before it’s fully dry, it’s growing much more rapidly.
Very informative video! You have provided us with a good framework for hoya care. Thank you!
Excellent information, Miro. You are extremely helpful and I have found that my experiences are aligned with yours. Thanks for the list!!!
You look extra handsome in this video. Your hair becomes you, it looks great! 😊
So interesting. Thank you very much. I think i will abandon the terracotta pots for hoyas.
Love ❤
Memory test all the way!! Although I shouldn’t count on my memory because it’s the worst 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same 🙈 If I were to write it down when I watered last time, I would probably be shocked and appaled 😂
What the heck? You’re killing me!! But unfortunately for me, you are right. Thank you for the info, love your videos.
What about Hoya thomsonii? I have a rooted cutting that I can’t get to grow a vine. It has been with me for 2 years. I have tried all kind of lighting settings. It is in a selfmade soil mix. I have been watering it more often for some months. I fertilize it with orchid fertilizer once a month. The leafs are pristine and beautiful, but it seems like it does not want to be lush (I do not even expect a bloom tbh). Maybe you can recommend something I am desperate 😂
Good information! I have two hoyas in small chunk coconut husk. I have to water more often and soak but I've never seen such root growth! Wow! Still figuring it all out in here in KS! Lol
I’m also in Kansas!
Thanks for the video Miro! What about Hoya villosa/globulosa?
You are too funny!!!!! Love you!!
Love the aroids behind they look super healthy👏
I have some of these Hoyas, acquired recently. I water these daily usually with a spray bottle to moisten the medium. They sit on my desk where I work so I see them every day. I am a bit of a hovering "mom", as it were. I have no excuse for under watering anything. And calatheas. I have those too. Should I have my head examined? Possibly... 😳
For calatheas? Definitely :D For hoyas? No. Hoyas I understand why someone would have. Calatheas... no :D I definitely have underwatered some of these and now they are in self-watering pots and that helps a lot :)
I love clay pots because they tie me to watering. I take more steps in my day ferrying the Hoyas to the sink. I worry about the watering and inspect them every day.
Thank you for discussing this topic, new to growing Hoyas I was waiting to water treating everyone as succulents. Lesson learned the hard way! Honestly my Iris Marie I think is my worst diva. Griffithi Silver is my second. Oh and my Treubiana grows so much better being watered 2 times a week which was a shock to me . Thank you for sharing!!! 💚💚💚
I grow some of my hoyas outdoors in Florida and even with daily rain and high humidity they are just fine. I think with higher light, increased air flow and high temperatures they process water much faster. My Hoya endauensis had its turn outdoors this summer and tripled in size.
Thank you really so much for sharing your experience that was really useful
Wow I truly need this information thank you so much Miro for sharing!🥰🙏🏻
Hi Miro. Watching your videos non-stop and loving all of them! This one is so very good!
Is it possible for you to make a similar videos about light requirement and humidity?
Something like "higher to lower light" loving Hoyas
"higher to low humidity" loving Hoyas"
Thanks for all you do!!!
This is such a helpful video Miro
Thank you.
Oh yeah, you never had a taco 😂?!!
I would love to make you some.
Very informative video Miro. Thanks for the great info and smiles
Some hoyas come from tropical and warm areas while others come from cloud forests - lower temperatures, high light, higher humidity. For instance hoya linearis. The cloud forest types will need a lot of water in warm weather.
Such a good video, I've really experienced this with cuttings I potted up in tiny Terra cotta that did nothing for a year, move them to a less porous pot and they finally start growing
I wonder about hoya khroniana. Just received one. Leaves are small but very firm. They also have it in some sort of backyard soil.
Ooooooooohhhhhhhhh… we need to get you tacos!!! 💚🌮💚 LOVE YOUR VIDEO, as always!!!!!!!!!💚🌱💚
Thank you for more information about Hoya- I just counted how many I have, 36 in 50 different pots 😁
Oh I think you need more! 😅
@@BasiePlants I’m sure it’ll happen 😁
Thoughts on endauensis? Small leaf so maybe more water. I barely had mine a month and leaves started to yellow at the base. It was in moss and bark mix. I neither over nor underwatered IMO so maybe transplant shock, I don’t know. In Ikea grow cabinet with temps 68-75F and humidity 50-78% and under Barina LED grow light. When I knew it was more likely I couldn’t save it, I took healthy cuttings from it. Now just two weeks later, about half of the cuttings have rooted. Those rooted in pon and the ones in moss-bark mix rooted faster, the ones in water still zero.
The ones that I have on your list I have noticed through trial and error about the watering but enjoyed the video.
Hi, Miro, long time viewer, first time commenting. I love your videos, they are so helpful, informative, funny... Thank you! I have a H. Crinkle Eight that I kept bone dry between waterings following recommendations. It did nothing for me for months, like a plastic plant. I decided to water it weekly and it is a miracle, shooting vines and new leaves all over. I really don't believe in the taco test, it is maybe enough to keep the plants alive, but not thriving. For me, at least, the secret is well drained soil. Water them, drain well. They will thank you.
Taco test definitely won't make them thrive! I did the same to my Krinkle 8 and now when I have a new one I water her more and she is growing! Something I did not know this plant was capable of.
@@BasiePlantsHi Miro!
I aquired a small Krinkle 8 in a large terra cotta pot. I was told it didn't grow. The soil looks moderately chunky. I hate terra cotta for mold and for not being able to feel the weight to judge it's moisture content (maybe just me; they alwaysfeel heavy). I haven't got around to repot it, but I placed it in bright indirect light and have given it frequent waterings. It has been thriving beyond my expectations!
I'm the same boat. A little shy of 300 plants with a little over half of them being Hoyas. I have done the chunky mix and was watering every 5 days or so. Now using more Coco pith so more water retention. However I have put off many a change of substrate so I still water very often.
I still have to repot so many of them! I am definitely done lying to myself and saying how chunky mix is fine, I just have to water more 😂 Time to be realistic and accept I am never overwatering these 😂
@@BasiePlants actually watching you with pink has gotten me interested. But I have so much stuff left over because I bought in bulk- I'm still putting everything in my modified mix. So much money spent and I hate waste
I am so curious about how long it has taken you to remember the names of all of these Hoyas!!!
Okay it's time for a taco night. I'm on my way.
Hi Basie, loving the hoya content
It is rabbit fence, the same I use for trellises :)
Miro, I took screen shots of all the lists! Thank you for the information. I use the Sustee Aquameters for my Hoyas and wait a day or so after the indicator turns white which means they need to be watered. Will you do a video on Hoyas that do not like extra water?
My Hoya Rotundiflora died and I don’t know if I under it overwatered it. ☹️
Terracotta pots dry out 5o quickly.
Hi Miro - thanks for an other entertaining video with usefull tips - I'm wondering where are you purchasing your practical flowerpots?
First I have to say if Hoyas are in the correct well draining drying soil / substrate they need to be watered , a lot lol!! I hate when people say “dry as a bone” no lie!!! Second 😊 People may come for me , but I will say the Hoyas that I ignore (I know it’s sad ) are the ones that bloom and seem the happiest , even with pests . It drives me nuts!!! The ones I treat and water the correct way, just grow nice but never bloom . So this is making me angry hahahaha!!!! Anyone else agree? Just me? Okay 👌🏼
I have a curtisii that I can't get right...the stems are very thin, and the leaves are small but thick-ish. I've had it both go yellow from overwatering, and crispy from waiting too long to give it a drink. Should I water when the pot is dry half-way down? 3/4 dry? Help! She's still full-looking, with vines that trail about 10 inches down the rim of the pot, but it's slowly getting balder from my inconsistent watering.
What do you use to spray for mites. I just started with sulfer funguside mixed in water. I understand I’ll have to do it every 7 days for 6 weeks to get rid of them
Thank you for this, I expected that already concerning the underwatering, but now it's for sure ;) And on the other side I'm really afraid about overwatering and rot roots (lots of my hoyas aren't in mineral substrate, and I heard you saying to not change the substrate where the hoyas have been grown). I didn't see if you already made one video about it but now since I'm using for few months some grow lights for the first time in my life, I'm wondering what kind and how much light the different hoyas really need. I have for instance one hoya bella and one Hoya-IPPS-7750-Sulawesi that are under a strong grow light, but only 12 hours a day, the whole winter, so not so high temperatures, and they both seemed to really like it - even if I forgot to water them a lot, and the hoya bella was and is (!) even flowering a bit all these colder months. On the other side, all others hoyas that are under, I guess, less powerful grow lights don't seem to have really reacted at all, in bad or good, beside some leaves sun stress (hoya serpens, hoya parasitica black edge. Lighting issue all depends about the balance togehter with watering and temperature (and pot size), as you remind here too, but this is a bit stressing.
rewatching this 9 months later. eliptica is a drama king in my house. more water, less water. the only way I can grow it is in a kids small candy container in stratum with perlite
My first plant died due to mysterious issue that prevented ANY of the 20 cuttings from rooting. Now I have three new ellipticas; one clone is the same as my previous one - grows 5x larger leaves, on my grow wall, 5x more slowly than before, just in coco peat and perlite; one is in the tent, and is the first one that will bloom; one I just got in my haul, so we will see :) Quite a journey with elliptica :D
So do you have a humidifier in your grow tent? I'm trying to find a balance in my cabinets. Of course the humidity goes up after watering. When the humidity gets down to about 50 percent I have these moss pouches I made with the mesh used to make moss poles. I guess I'm worried it will get too humid and then the hoyas will dry out slower than normal. Any advice would be appreciated.
I have no luck with hoya. All my propagations always dying . 😭
Drina hasn't reached out yet? They should. When you also said "We don't get them here . I don't know why" . 100% can relate. Applicable to almost ever thing. 😑 Plus LOL that random revving motor in front your house.....ugh I hate those too 😒
Agreed!! Calatheas ugh!!
Are Hoya praetori and lasiantha the same?
Need help with my hoya gps 7240…i dont know if it need more water or less?! I live in the Philippines so its generally hot here. All my hoyas are outdoors but under a shaded area with GL.
I live in Southern Australia, my hoyas all live outside, some in the rain, I now know that I haven't overwatered, more likely underwatered. How do you tell the difference between overwatered and underwatered hoyas
Miro, this video has helped me so, so much! So much good information. That explains why I’m having to water so often. I have a lot of mine in terracotta. You answered so many of my questions with just this video. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I just got a Hoya Bella and didn’t really know if I should let it get real dry before watering. You probably saved it’s life. Take care. Hair gorgeous as always. 💚🪴🌿🌱💚
Could you be louder …. I burst into laughter, love your videos
Also for me camphorifolia! The root system stays so dinky, I find myself watering it a lot.
I have a hoya bella.and.it is always thirsty!!
What do you do when all the leaves drop? I have a few Hoyas with zero leaves and I put them in fluval. Not sure if it will work.
Make sure to check for mites in that case, they could cause that. But also, irregular watering.
@@BasiePlants thank you. They are all new plants. I’ve had them less than a month. I didn’t see mites and I changed the soil after a few days. Maybe I shocked them 😫
Thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou from my new guinea ghost and my caudata
Hi Miro: what is the type of material that you use on the wall to hang your plants?
It is IKEA Skadis pegboard. There are Skadis clips you can buy for the pegboard, so I can glue them to the pots :)
Miro, why does underwatering put you at risk for mites? Why is everyone suddenly talking bout those flat mites? Ty
I only have 3 hoya! Polyneura, linearis, and kerrii! I struggle with linearis. Maybe I should keep it more moist 💦
It also doesn’t love being too hot. But nothing dramatic like Hoya serpens, for sure!
I’ve been thinking of moving h. Lineares to self watering, what do you think?
I think it will do well :)
Wow wonderful Plants ^^
Include Like 444, I leave 3 presents.
Have a good relationship.
My friend, alwyas stay connected~~~
This comments thread: people upset that Miro hasn't had a taco.
I have my multiflora dropping the newest leaves, they are still green. Can this also be underwatering, it is a rooted cutting on pon but all 4 new leaves (2 bigger and 2 smaller) have fallen off. The older ones are still on
It could be inconsitency in watering. Have you checked the roots?
@@BasiePlants not yet. I will check them tomorrow. Thanks. I just transferred it to self watering, hope that will give it a more consistent moisture
