- Today I wanted to give you a guide on how to root Hoya cuttings. In my opinion, this is one of the most important skills you can acquire as novice Hoya grower as it will come handy many times! Knowing how to root hoyas will help you save your plant in cases of root rot, root mealybugs, and many other situations when we simply don't know what is wrong with our plant.

I sometimes even tape two clear plastic cups together and drop a few cuttings inside. Cause... space is an issue. :D that works pretty well. Some of my bagged ones, I just toss a moist paper towel in the bottom and keep an eye on 'em. Thanks for all the great info, Miro!
I’m in the US and I’ve purchased unroofed cuttings twice. The first time it was a Hoya nova ghost and it was in moss. It rooted right away just kept the moss moist. The most recent was a wilbur graves Russian Hoya and it also rooted in no time. Although it’s a slower grower than the nova ghost which grows like weeds.
I always use perlite for my hoya and propagate them all the time. I am always successful! I do jars and glasses of perlite and cuttings and keep them in my greenhouse (it’s one of those clear covered greenhouses) in a nice big window.
Recently I got some cuttings of peperomia parallel and put them in water because I was being lazy. They are not doing anything after a couple weeks so, I’m going to move them to my trusty perlite!

Hi Miro 💫 I have recently started buying just unrooted cuttings because 1)They are way cheaper and 2) Because I enjoy watching them grow and flourish in my care. I was rooting in either moss or perlite, no bag for extra humidity ~ if you aren’t gonna make it here from the beginning you won’t last is my thinking 💭 so then I started rooting directly in Pon because all my Hoyas (except the Mother Linearis plant) have all been switched to Pon so might as well start them young haha😊. I’ve had great luck so far so I’m gonna keep going with it. However, I am awaiting an unrooted cutting of Mathilde that should arrive tomorrow and I’m little scared as it’s a 2 leaf cutting so I may do the bag on that one. We shall see. It is great to root them in a mix in which they will grow and get them adjusted early :) I rooted mostly all of my plants, very few have been bought as larger than 2-3 node cuttings :)

I usually dont callous and havent lost any cuttings. Except a dying plant last stitch effort. Bought a root rotted plant :( good luck! Ive started hoyas in 2" pots with moist soil and put 4 in a large ziplock bag and leave the smallest hole. I feel this is the best now.

I also don’t like rooting in moss because I forget to check on it…usually it’ll dry out. 🤦🏻♀️ I have used fluval/perlite mixture for easy rooting Hoyas. For some reason I am terrible at rooting in pon. I have used moss as well but I place my cuttings where I look at them regularly because out of sight out of mind…then we will have dried out moss…but the I run out of space. 😬 Moss/perlite mix is preferred in my prop box. I don’t have to worry about it drying out quickly.

Oh my goodness Miro! What a fantastic and informative video.. Thank you sooo much! I have been struggling with 2 of my hoya so I needed to prop to actually save some of the plant.. My main trouble maker is the linearis.. so far no luck but I am going to do the blow & bag 😂😂😂😂method.. Thanks again!
I find linearis easy to root in water :) But I rooted it in perlite too, and in coco peat and perlite in a prop box :)

Well I wish I would have watched this all the way through before I rooted my multiflora! Apparently I got distracted right before that part. I did figure it out but it was a bit scary for a minute. It was definitely different than I am used to with Hoyas. Love all your videos!

I recently have started rooting and growing in homemade pon. It’s like when I root in my airy potting mix and leave it to grow. It’s that one stop shop. Root and leave in that substrate. Fantastic video as always. Love your channel 💚💚💚

Great video. I will try cutting some of my larger plants and using the pearlite and bag method. Prop boxes have not worked for me in he past. Water does but I like the idea of the moist bags. Thank you.
Awesome video Miro, thank you. My go to, which I know you don’t have easy access to but living in NZ it is easily accessible for me, is fern fibre. I love it a lot, drains water fast but holds on to moisture and because of its fibrous nature, is very airy. Hoya love it.
Water used to be my go to in the early days but only occasionally do it now. I am always anxious in the transition period from water to soil and the roots adjusting to soil. It feels like a cutting needs to spend double the amount of energy first growing water roots to then grow soil roots.
Moss and I are simply not best friends so have given up on that a long time ago 😂
I also do wet sticks of Hoya. While the success rate is much lower, I tend to only do it with mature ‘sticks’ and fern is again my go to or the coco coir/perlite mix you’ve talked about. Have you tried?

I love using moss, even more so since I started adding #4 perlite (2 parts moss 1 part perlite) , not only does it not compress when using it long term, but adds extra air flow & makes removing the moss from the roots a snap.
I have also rooted many plants in moss :) If I have it on hand, I will sometimes root in it. I find that it works really well for some plants.
I loved seeing that you used so many different prop mediums, I honestly thought I was the only one who doesn't relay on only 1 or 2 methods.

Oh I use whatever I can get my hands on :D It is good to know more methods as not always you will have access to pumice, pon, moss etc :)
I do like to place cuttings in fluval stratum.

I have a sort of related question. I have an elliptica with a kinked stem. I currently have a splint on it and it’s stable but was wondering if air layering would be an option for rooting it? Have you ever with a Hoya?

Thanks, some good information and ideas. I usually root directly into pon-ish, but I'm definitely going to try the zip-lock bag technique. Since it seems to work both with and without perlite I'm wondering what the perlite brings to the party. I'm not a big perlite fan since the dust is carcinogenic, but wondered if maybe it serves some specific purpose.

Great info! I had an epic fail with a multiflora. Tried it in water, didnt root, then i just put it back in the pot and it kept falling out. I never ever saw any roots. Finally gave up. Thanks for telling me that they are hard and slow to root. I feel much better. I recently trimmed my carnosa crimson queen. It was so big and the vines were so long. I have put those cuttings in water. That plant reverted. No more variegation on most of the leaves. So i hope that some of the cuttings will have some back. The cutting are quite long, maybe 12 inches or so.
It took my multiflora 196 days to root. At that point, it had grown a huge knob and almost completely sucked all the life out of its leaves. Then it took another half year for it to start growing.
Never give up on a Hoya, until it is dead 😉

Hi! First of all - I’ve recently discovered your channel and honestly - you do such a great job! I really enjoy watching your vids.
6:40 - I also wanted to ask - recently I’ve received couple of cuttings of different Hoyas with such long vines as this one. I mean there is proper main stem + 1 leaf or two, but additionally this long, bare vine. What to do in such case? Leave it to make roots or cut it due to rot risk? Thanks in advance!

If you are water propagating, try distilled water + 1 drop of algamic per cup :)

All the way from Serbia. Isn't it wonderful how we can communicate. I am here in Idaho, USA. Can you do a Hoya Summer Camp topic of root rot. I think I may have killed my first Hoya. It became very dehydrated and I have tried everything to rehydrate it. I think it rotted from underwatering? I don't know, but it was hard for me to ID what went wrong.

Rotting is from overwatering/moolisture retention from the soil and sometimes worsened by too little light.
If you underwater, many people overwater with next watering by accident
For your current/next hiya:
1) recipe foe chunky soil mix
2),knownwhat liggt is nexessary for the plant.
3) put alarm on phine to remind you to check your hiya. I lift thecpot and i never am obligated to water when my alarm rings, its a check.
4) water when needed only. Let it dry out between waterings
5) check your plants wvery few days to check for issues.

I am so happy, all my cuttings have rooted (apart from Bella which I have now moved to perlite). Thank you so much for your advice. One question, how long shall I let the roots grow before I transfer to soil? Thanks again - love your videos and I’m learning so much from you.
I typically don't let the roots get too big, as I like them to grow in the medium in which I intent do leave the plant in :)

I find it easy to root in most mixes :) I prefer to root them in whatever I intend to grow them in.

Hi Miro. Thanks for all the good advice. My problem is that I sometimes receive Hoyas which are rooted but were in soil before. As I am putting my Hoyas in a Pon mix with Seramis I want to get rid of the soil but it is almost impossible. What do you do? Get rid of the soil completely and damage the roots or leave the soil and get root ?

Hi! I rooted mine in coco peat and perlite in a propagation box. I find it takes a bit longer to root - but maintain the high humidy, warmth and check the stem when you can to see it is not rotting. The leaves are very thin on this Hoya so it may look a bit alarming for a moment there, but she’ll be okay once she roots :) Patience is key here 😅

Miro I haves figured out how to keep all of my plants semi happy and growing, but my rooting skills SUCK! I have tried all the ways my plants friends on RUclips have recommended! Just can’t find one that doesn’t grow mold, rot, or grow mold or rot! I actually feel bad for trying anymore at this point!!!
What will happen if I don’t let it dry out after cutting before putting it in the propagation box? I just had to cut up a very big kroniana Eskimo because all the roots were rotting so I cut off all the roots and I have like 25 stems in perlite in my grow bag but I didn’t let them dry out first. Should I take them out and let them dry out and put them back in?
And it’s a pain getting the moss off when you want to plant it. Sometimes the roots break when you’re trying to get the moss off.
Depends, sometimes it is not so hard if the roots are not too grown in, but I agree, it can be a challenge.
Do you soak and buff your coco peat?
I ordered a super silver and it arrived with flat yellowing leaves and the soil was wet and I have left it alone for two weeks. I did water it but now the stems are drying up. I need help to save it if I can.
I'm trying to root a two leaf one node curtisii. I had it in water for 3 weeks. No roots. Now I 've pinned it to damp soil. I had trouble growing roots on it a year ago and finally grew enough to pot it in soil. I noticed in Dec it looked unhealthy, unpotted it and the roots were gone. Trying to get it to root again is not going well. Is there such a thing as an unhealthy plant that wasn't healthy to start with and won't grow?
I put my hoya root that looked dead into a plastic baggie in the window. I have small leaves forming. What should I do now. Please, o could use some help.
I have the im-08 at first I tried the perlite method it failed 😢. Now I have it in water with
GT CCS Clone Cutting Solution mixed with GT Growth Technology Foliage Focus Houseplant Food Nutrient wish me luck.
It should root easily either way. :) I didn't try it in perlite, but it worked well rooting it in moss. :)

I wish I could get cuttings from Europe 😢 there are some varieties you have shown in your videos that I can’t find here in the US or they are expensive.
But you also have some that we don't have :D
i prefer cuttings. every time i purchase something already rooted it rots. i think a lot of time its the change in conditions. how could something growing in Arizona have the same requirements as something in Seattle.
I almost always root in water. I like to see the new roots. Please tell me what you said about putting a drop of something in the water. I couldn't catch the name.

I use Algamic from BioBizz when I root in water :) It is seaweed vitamin. :)
What is the plant behind you by the chair?
I personally never use a ‘communal’ prop box. So many cuttings I see are from diseased plants which have been chopped up to sell because the owner has struggled with it. Who knows what gets passed between cuttings in a box? I always root and bag individually - it’s my quarantine routine.
Can I mention labels? I’m sure most mis-identified plants circulating are from prop box cuttings where the owner has completed forgotten what it is, and has guessed. Really important to label everything, including a collection id if it has one.
Yes, it is very important to label everything! I use a communal propbox when I sell my cuttings for sale, but also I usually get most of my plants in a single batch - so all the cuttings are coming from the same place. Then, in my eyes, it doesn't matter so much if I separate them or not. But that is because I usually get 2-3 shipments these days with 10-20 plants in them :D When I do get them separately, then they get their own bag/ box, depending how many hoyas are in question. Very good advice, thanks for pointing it out! I do hate when the ugliest cuttings are sold, I do not appreciate that at all. Luckily for me, I do still have very good memory and I know exactly which they are, even without a label :D And it does help that I record most of it for videos so I can always look it up in case I do forget xD But most don't do that :D
@@BasiePlants I agree that contamination risks are lower when rooting cuttings from your own plants. Many of your viewers watching ‘how to root Hoya’ will probably be less experienced and just starting to buy unrooted cuttings to try. Establishing a good quarantine practise from the outset can help them prevent problems in future.

@@juliekennedy6658 Haha yes, I love those comparisons! I don't find it difficult to memorzie them because as I unpack I always notice the differences - larger vs smaller cuttings, even if they are the same species :D I may not remember the exact accession number, but I put that right away in my file. but I agree, good quarantine practices are very important! I have had luck that only few were every really badly infested. It usually happens that somehow pests find their way in later, after the plants have spent some time here. But aside from mites, I have to say not much else I've seen in the past year and a half (of course, having said this, you know I will find a mealybug nest somewhere)
